At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. Carsyn Volpe has made a lot of friends during his seven years as a student at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Now, his friends are doing their part to lift his spirits as he battles cancer for the second time. Sixth graders wore purple to school on Nov. 24, which was “Courage for Carsyn” day. They decided to pick a color to show unity in their support, and Carsyn chose purple as the color he wanted to see his peers wear. Carsyn was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer, as a 2 year old and was cancer-free after a year and a half of treatment. Recently, he learned that it
returned. Because Carsyn shaved his head prior to the start of chemotherapy, more than a dozen students did so as well. Even a few girls joined in by cutting off a few inches of hair. Jimmy Lewis, who has known Carsyn since first grade, was one of the students who sported the new look. He described Carsyn as a genuinely nice person who is a wonderful friend and has a great personality. “He’s going through a really tough time and we want to help him feel better,” Jimmy said. “We want to put a smile on his face.” That smile could come from the Flipgrid videos that all sixth graders made on Nov. 24. They
recorded personal messages of support and encouragement for Carsyn, spreading out on the expansive lawn with their iPads. Students practiced social distancing so they could remove their masks, so Carsyn could see his friends’ faces and clearly hear their voices as they sent their well-wishes. Principal Jeff Rosof said he is very proud of how the sixth grade students and teachers stepped up to support Carsyn and that this is another example of how the Saw Mill Road community is caring and compassionate. “Hopefully their efforts can give Carsyn some strength for the battle ahead,” Mr. Rosof said. “We wish him the best.”

All Kids Fair Was Virtual – And Is Now Available For Free Continued From 4 petting zoo, this year there were virtual “live animal visits,” where farm animals such as sheep, goats and a mini-donkey were the stars. In addition to being educational, the “visits” were highly entertaining. Another new addition to this year’s event were “coffee talks,” opportunities for parents to interact with others at the same stage of life, such as those with a child who is an infant, toddler, elementary age, middle school age, high school age, special needs, or
gifted. All Kids Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said the time was right to pivot to an All Kids Fair virtual expo. “It was definitely not “just a Zoom event.’ It was a full-fledged virtual expo. We incorporated many of the activities of our live events plus some new opportunities such as our “virtual live animal visits” and “coffee talks.” Families had a great time learning at our many classes about services and products available to them.” Repeat attendee David Rosenthal of Oceanside raved about
the event. “My girls had a blast! The younger one loved looking at the animals [in the virtual petting zoo], and my older one liked Captain America and the ballet class. They asked if there will be another All Kids Fair next month!” There were several non-Long Island based businesses this year who enjoyed the opportunity to make their services available to Long Islanders virtually. Me Wall Street, a New York City-based business, was a newcomer this year. She shared that “the All Kids Fair made it easy for the parents because we have the Christmas holidays coming up. Families were able to learn about things to do; it opened their eyes. I was very pleased with the event.” The All Kids Fair, as always, had many diverse exhibitors including party entertainment, tutoring, activities, health/wellness products and services, non-profits, travel, and even a Girl Scout troop.

See Santa Letters to Santa Drop Off
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently announced that the children of Nassau County will once again be able to send their holiday lists directly to Old St. Nick at the North Pole via a special network of Santa’s Mailboxes at Nassau County Parks to December 18, 2020. “Happy to be able to provide a sense of normalcy and some holiday cheer for Nassau’s little ones who may have struggled to adapt to the many changes and challenges of this past year,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “Continuing to enhance our parks and expand their fun and unique seasonal programs is key to making Nassau a better place for people to live, work and play. Encouraging families to take advantage of this safe and magical annual activity.” All children who send letters to Santa will receive a reply in the form of a “SantaGram” from the North Pole, with Santa’s elves at the Parks Department pitching in to send cheery but noncommittal letters in response to children’s letters. To assure a reply, each letter must contain the child’s name and address, written legibly. There is no
postage necessary for the Santa letters. The “SantaGrams” will be sent before the holiday. Colorful red and green mailboxes will be accessible from 10am to 4pm daily. They will be placed in a prominent location in the lobbies or just outside of the administration buildings of the following parks: • Cantiague Park, West John Street, Hicksville • Christopher Morley Park, Searingtown Road, Roslyn - North Hills • Grant Park, Broadway & Sheridan Ave., Hewlett • Mackey Park, Lakeview Drive & Washington Ave, Roosevelt • Wantagh Park, Merrick Road, Wantagh • Eisenhower Park’s Aquatic Center, Merrick Avenue, East Meadow • Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage (Wednesday-Sunday) Residents can also email Santa at: santaclaus@ n a s s a u c o u n t y n y. g o v.
