On Tuesday, October 27th, 2015, I was a witness to history. Fairfield School turned 90 and I was there! Our school was once called Massapequa Avenue School. Some of the things I learned about school in the early days was that if you looked outside, you would see the people playing polo. Polo is when you are on a horse and you have a certain type of stick and a wooden ball. Also, if you want to play baseball at recess, you have to be picked to play. Sometimes, you do not get picked or there is no room
for the kids to play. The invention that inspired me the most was the Band-Aid, which was made by Earle Dickson. He made the Band-Aid in the 1920’s in Highland Park, New Jersey. It is important because there would be a lot of people with cuts if not for him. It happened when Earle Dickson placed gauck on his wife’s cuts and they got better. I can relate to the Band-Aid because I always get hurt. The event the inspired me the most was 90’s Jazz. This took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is important
because, without 90’s Jazz, there would be no Jazz music today. It happened when the military people came back and they “wanted life to be light and happy.” I am connected to 90’s Jazz because I play the flute. I love Jazz, and my nana was born in the 1920’s and she loved Jazz. As you can see, the 1920’s was an inspiring time because they gave us a lot of new inventions, like eskimo pie, the traffic light, the jukebox and the bulldozer. We still use and eat these inventions today. So what inspires you about the 1920’s?

STEM Lesson In the Merrick School District, first-graders of Lakeside Elementary School built motorized cars with Legos. During an activity from Bricks for Kids, an educational organization
devoted to teaching STEM fundamentals in an engaging and creative way, first-graders divided into teams of two to build cars. Students were provided a packet of instructions to collaborate with their
partner. As students finished assembling their cars, they were able to test the speed of their cars around the classroom.

Senior Honored On November 17th, members of the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band recognized East Meadow High School senior Elton Ha for being one of 125 high school students performing in the All-American Bowl halftime show. During the ceremony, All-American Games Representative and U.S. servicemen opened the ceremony acknowledging Elton for his hard work and dedication. Staff Sergeant Michael Barbagallo commended Elton not
only for his musical talents but also for being a wellrounded student. “Elton was not just selected on his musical skills but an embodiment of leadership, academics and integrity,” Staff Sergeant Barbagallo said. Following his remarks, Elton thanked the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band for honoring him and expressed his gratitude toward Music Chairperson Christopher Hale and band teacher Molly Tittler for their unconditional
support. Ms. Tittler nominated Elton for this award. “Elton is a model student who is reliable, professional, mature and easy to work with,” she said. “He’s a wonderful musician and this could not have happened to a more deserving student.” On January 9th, 2016 Elton will be performing in San Antonio, Texas with the U.S. Army AllAmerican Marching Band and other talented high school musicians.

Service Award
The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald received the Distinguished Service Award from the Hofstra George M. Estabrook Alumni Association for her professional accomplishments in and contributions to education. The award was conferred upon Dr. McDonald during the 55th annual Distinguished Service Award Luncheon at Hofstra University on November 15th. A lifelong Levittown resident, Dr. McDonald
began her career in education in 1995 as a teacher in the Levittown School District, where she advised the student council and Model Congress and served on the PTSA and Levittown Council of PTAs. Dr. McDonald was promoted to social studies chair (2003), director of pupil personnel services (2005), assistant business manager (2008) and assistant superintendent for business and finance (2009). She became assistant superintendent for business and administration in the Plainedge School District in 2010, but returned to Levittown in 2014 as superintendent of schools. During her tenure in Levittown, Dr. McDonald received the New York State Liberty Award, the Honorary Life Award by Division Avenue High School’s PTSA and was named Teacher of the Year by Division Avenue High School’s National Honor Society. She was also an
item writer for the New York State Global History and Geography Regents. While working as a teacher and administrator, Dr. McDonald further pursued her education at Hofstra University by earning a certificate of advanced study in administration and policy studies in 2000 and a Doctor of Education in educational policy leadership in 2013. In addition, she has served as an adjunct professor at Hofstra University and Dowling College and serves on dissertation committees at both schools. Upon receiving the Distinguished Service Award, Dr. McDonald said, “I am truly humbled by this award and am extremely honored to contribute to the educational success of the Levittown School District’s students each day.”
The Division Avenue High School physical education department hosted the school’s inaugural flag football Turkey Bowl Championship tournament on November 9th. There were 16 teams of students, who all contributed a nonperishable food item to the Levittown Food

Earlier this month, students from Mepham High School’s Broadcasting class attended a taping of the ABC afternoon talk show “The Chew” in Manhattan. The show focuses on food and entertainment and is co-hosted by celebrity chefs Mario Batali, Daphne Oz, Clinton Kelly, Carla Hall and Michael Simon. Teacher Filiz Cooney,
English Chairperson Mary Donnelly and Assistant Principal Marie Netto visited the taping along with the students to help gain a first-hand glimpse at how a television production team coordinates with the talent and the studio audience to produce a onehour talk show. The class was introduced to the show’s stage manager, lighting

After a spirited competition, the Levittown Pioneers team, which included JC Soriano, Chris LaRocca, Joe Leoce, George Hafner, Jimmy Langjhar and Vinny Inciarrano, clinched the championship title against the D.O.M. team and was named Turkey Bowl Champion.
The physical education department commends all of the participants for their competitive spirit and for their willingness to assist Levittown families in need for the Thanksgiving holiday. The physical education department plans on building on the success of this year’s event with an even bigger turnout next year.
Nabbing a Title The John F. Kennedy Cougars boys volleyball team recently defeated Jericho to win the Nassau County Class B title. This is the sixth time in the past eight years that Kennedy’s boys volleyball has earned the Nassau County Championship. They won in straight sets - 25-18, 25-20 and 25-19. “There was a great crowd
cheering for the team… that definitely made the gym feel like it belonged to the Cougar Nation,” said Principal Lorraine Poppe. Michael Ianniello was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Harrison Ivers was named All-County Tournament Honorable Mention and Jonah Zeitlin and Josh Levine were named to the

Division Avenue High School’s Class of 2016 top achievers attended the annual Blue and Silver Luncheon to honor their hard work and dedication throughout four years of high school. Hockey Stars Visit Students and staff at Mandalay and Forest Lake elementary schools in Wantagh dressed in hockey jerseys and t-shirts and donned blue and orange clothing to welcome four of the New York Islanders hockey team players. On Islanders Day each year, schools are chosen to receive a visit from the players who speak about teamwork, motivation, a healthy lifestyle and the key to academic success. The players also
took the time to sign autographs. Defensemen Thomas Hickey and Calvin DeHaan visited Mandalay Elementary School, while forward Anders Lee and defenseman Travis Hamonic spoke to Forest Lake Elementary School students and staff. “We are truly blessed to have great players come to our school today,” Mandalay Principal Marie Pisicchio told the students upon introducing the players.
The Islanders spoke about where they are from, their reasons for choosing hockey as a sport and how teamwork is essential to winning hockey games. All four of the players said their goal is to win the Stanley Cup. “It is important to put in the work to become a good player or a good student,” Hickey said. “If you want to move up, then you have to start good habits while in school.”

East Meadow High School and W. T. Clarke High School have been named semifinalists in the 2016 GRAMMY Signature Schools program. The GRAMMY Signature School program, established in 1998, recognizes the top U.S. public high
schools that commit to providing students with an outstanding music education program throughout the academic school year. In mid-March, the program will announce the Gold recipients (finalists) with one school program being honored
as the National GRAMMY Signature School. “This is a tremendous honor to have both of our high schools recognized as semifinalists,” Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo said while congratulating each school’s music program.

Celebrating the Season Dressed as turkeys, Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center preschool students celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with seasonal activities. Under the direction of teachers Alison Burke and Liz Haines, the district’s youngest students entertained their parents as they gobbled upon
entering the cafeteria and wobbled and flapped their wings while singing “I’m a Little Turkey,” “Turkey Trot” and “Five Plump Turkeys.” The students then joined their parents at the tables decorated with handmade Thanksgiving placemats where they jointly worked on a turkey craft. Ms. Burke also read
aloud “The Thanksgiving Story Bracelet,” while students and parents added a colored bead to a pipe cleaner, corresponding to the clues in the story. Everyone’s favorite activity, however, was the opportunity to taste delicious pumpkin and apple pie.

Shooting for the Stars During the November 17th Merrick Board of Education business meeting, faculty and students were honored as November Merrick Stars. Merrick Stars is an award program that recognizes staff and students who go above and beyond to help

Business students from Calhoun and Mepham High Schools participated in the second annual Adelphi Apprentice Challenge at Adelphi University on November 20th. Students competed in a social media and marketing plan competition for Live
Nation Entertainment. The students placed in the top two groups, among 150 students who participated from schools all over Long Island. “Students gained valuable insight into the world of business from esteemed judges
in the marketing and entertainment industries,” said Eric Gomez, assistant principal at Calhoun High School.

Photo courtesy of: Merrick School District Food Drive to benefit members of the BellmoreMerrick community. “With the help of Stop & Shop, Student Government was able to continue this annual tradition as well as its dedication to community service,” said Brad Seidman, a social studies teacher, Senior Experience coordinator and co-faculty advisor
to the Kennedy student Government. The Student Government set up outside of the North Bellmore Stop & Shop in mid-November in help maximize donations. Shoppers were asked to pick up a few extra cans of vegetables, boxes of stuffing, cake mixes, etc. and leave them with the Student Government members who were stationed outside the door. “Some shoppers even helped by donating frozen
turkeys, a staple at the Thanksgiving dinner table,” Seidman added. Students at Kennedy High School were also encouraged to bring in non-perishable food items during the week to help contribute to the food collection efforts. Club members then gathered a few days later after school to organize and package the food. More than 40 boxes were neatly packaged and wrapped, as well as more than 20 turkeys.

Reason for the Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tradition: the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way. And so closes another Thanksgiving, filled with family, food and fond memories sure to be reflected upon in the coming years. By the time you read this, most of society will have already moved on to Christmas shopping and decorating and planning their next round of feasting and festivities. For me, as the clock strikes midnight, signaling the dawn of “Black Friday” and the close of autumnal activities, once and for all, I choose to savor this particular occasion just a bit longer. The essence of Thanksgiving is, after all, the true spirit of any holiday season
– or at least it should be. Too often, we become so caught up in the commercial clichés that we fail to truly appreciate these special moments. Just earlier today, as my own family reminisced upon occasions gone by, the recurring theme was family, friends and loved ones. The cast of characters may change from year to year, but the sentiment remains the same. While every holiday may not unfold perfectly from beginning to end – despite the “flawless” façade portrayed by most peoples’ Instagram and Facebook posts – they each hold their own place in the grand scheme of life. Time, and tradition, marches on, whether we like it or not. How we choose to spend that time will dictate the memories we make along the way and the fondness
with which we will recall them years – or perhaps mere months – from now. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be a hassle on the surface; but the joy it brings on a much deeper level is well worth the effort. Traditions surely vary from family to family, or even from year to year, as customs naturally evolve over time and take on varying forms. The specific nuances are not important. The togetherness, the process of coming together at this special time of year… that’s what traditions are made of. So before you head out into the fray in search of sale items over these next few weeks, stop to remember the reason we go to all this trouble. That notion should be enough to make the holidays truly happy.

A Midsummer Night The Drama Club at John F. Kennedy High School recently presented William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the school’s auditorium. The stage came to life thanks to the crew who worked to create mythical Athens and an enchanted
forest. Under the direction of English teacher Daniel Sheffield, the cast has worked tireless to portray the plays’ characters. “The story centers around two young couples, which flee at night to the mystical Athens Carnival; however, their romantic
escape is complicated by the carnival’s magical residents,” Sheffield explained. “It’s filled with lovers, fairies, misapplied love potions, mistaken identities and the most famous play-within-a play ever written.”
Taking the Challenge Students in Christine Boyce’s Science class at Sanford H. Calhoun High School recently participated in the North Shore-LIJ SPARK! Challenge. The students were matched with a facility and were able to shadow people from various fields for a day. This site visit to Glen Cove Hospital’s Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit was an opportunity to gain knowledge about various aspects of healthcare. Students had hands on
experience in recreation therapy and speech pathology, along with physical and occupational therapy. “Students come away from the challenge with a new respect and empathy for patients that suffer a brain injury,” Boyce said. “They learned first-hand from real health care professionals what life is like to work with patients. Students were also given information about each of the therapy components in terms of career choice.”
Nearly 500 students across Long Island will take part in these shadow days. After their visit, Calhoun students will create a video to show what they learned with the assistance of a mentor from North-Shore LIJ. “The health care professionals were very forthcoming and excited to tell students about their personal experiences as students had many questions,” Boyce added.

The Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts will present its annual Winter Festival, a showcase of the impressive talent being nurtured by the school’s many programs, on Wednesday, December 2nd, at 7 p.m. The evening will feature a sample from a full spectrum of artistic disciplines including film, theatre, dance, music and fine art. The evening will begin with a screening of “We Are LIHSA,” a short film offering a student’s eye view of daily life at the high school. Following this will be a presentation of select GREEN GIVES BACK - Bowling Green Kiwanis Club members filled boxes with artwork, during which the canned goods, stuffing, gravy and cereal for families in the community. Highlights include a unique interpretation of the critically acclaimed pop hit “FourFiveSeconds;” performances from the musicals “Sweet Charity” and “Moulin Rouge;” and a variety of originally choreographed dance numbers. “This promises to be a spectacular night of entertainment that everyone can enjoy,” LIHSA Interim Principal Jack Lenson says of the upcoming festival. “We’re
highlighting the wonderful work of our students and staff, and inviting everyone from communities across Long Island to discover what we’re all about.
