My Buddy Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant. I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and flitting to and fro, and the

occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little ﬁnned friend… Love, your Human

High school student and violinist Nina Inayan attended the secondary festival held at Munsey Park Elementary School on November 18th-20th. Wantagh Middle School cellists Zachary Cespedes and Margaret Gates will attend the intermediate festival to be held at Uniondale High School March 3rd through 5th. In addition, Wantagh Elementary School student Isabella Astaiza, Mandalay Elementary School student Patrick Iskander and Forest Lake Elementary School student Madeline Rose, who play the viola, will also attend the intermediate festival.

Gobble Good Time Dressed as turkeys, Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center preschool students celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with seasonal activities. Under the direction of teachers Alison Burke and Liz Haines, the district’s youngest students entertained their parents

as they gobbled upon entering the cafeteria and wobbled and flapped their wings while singing the “Turkey Trot,” “Hello, Mr. Turkey,” “I’m a Little Acorn,” and “Albuquerque Turkey.” The students then joined their parents to make a craft of a decorative placemat to use during the

holiday season. In addition, students throughout the school wore handmade turkey and pilgrim hats and dressed as Native Americans and pilgrims while singing Thanksgiving songs for guests. They also worked on a craft with their parents and ate a delicious snack to celebrate the season.

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING - The Division Avenue High School community in Levittown caught the spirit of giving as they donated more than 10,000 food items and $1,500 in supermarket gift cards for those in need this Thanksgiving holiday. The student council and senior class officers hosted the annual food drive, and students and teachers worked diligently to box and distribute the food prior to the holiday. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles visited Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District on November 10th for Open School Day. Each student welcomed one special guest to spend part of the day working on a fun, hands-on activity. With Thanksgiving coming up, third-grade students and their visitors had to build turkeys in preparation of the Great Turkey Race. They could only use the provided materials including Styrofoam bowls, cardboard tubes, an index card, tape, and red, orange

and yellow construction paper. The students used the design process - ask, imagine, plan, create and improve - to answer the question, “How can I build the fastest turkey?” The students sketched their ideas a day in advance, then worked with their guests to execute their designs. At the end, students raced their turkeys, blowing through a straw to see how far their creations could go. Sixth-graders participated in a ProtectA-Pilgrim STEAM activity. The students and their visitors were given certain

materials, and had to build a shelter for a paper pilgrim that could protect them from rain, wind or snow. Items included popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, masking tape, paper plates, cups, aluminum foil, string and straws. Each house also had to have a way for the pilgrim to get in and out. After they were done, they sprayed their houses with water, blew on them through straws and put heavy objects on the roof to simulate the different elements and see if their pilgrims truly were protected.

Quite a Treat Fourth-graders in Antonietta Fischetti’s class at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District recently found a sweet way to hone their research and writing skills as they learned about some of their favorite treats. Students were asked to

select a candy and learn about its origins, such as why and when it was created, and how much it cost then and now. The students learned fun facts, such as Steven Biscula who found out that the hard shell of M&Ms was made so it could be sent to soldiers overseas and they

could carry it without the chocolate melting. Each student wrote a report and created a large version of the candy at home with the help of their families. They then shared their projects with their classmates.

Immersed in Study

Fourth-graders at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District spent several weeks working on a Native American study. They focused on the Iroquois and the Algonquian tribes which once inhabited the land that is now New York. Led by teachers Patti Barnett, Patti Mitchell

and Dawn Teti, students were fully immersed in the culture, making headdresses and giving themselves Native American names. They also learned about the houses that Native Americans lived in, the foods they ate and some of their celebrations. As a culminating activity, each student selected an element of Native American

life and created a project. They made miniature longhouses, wampum belts and more, and had to write an informational report. These projects were on display in the auditorium on November 15th as parents and other students in the school were invited to come in and learn more.

The Division Avenue High School competitive marching band, under the direction of Michael Bastone in the Levittown School District, placed sixth in the Small School 2 division of the New York State Field Band Conference Finals, held at Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome. The music was arranged based on “Pure Imagination” from the original “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and was the common melodic theme throughout the show. Students of Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District lent a helping hand in a schoolwide mural

painting constructed by art teacher Franceska Baer. During art class, students in kindergarten through fifth grade

assisted Ms. Baer in the enormous garden mural by leaving their handprint in the foliage, and in the roots and stems of the roses.

Giving Thanks In celebration of School Board Recognition Week, students, district organizations and PTA representatives honored the Bellmore School District’s trustees for their voluntary service and commitment to students during the November 15th board of education meeting. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo recognized the trustees efforts by saying, “We thank you for working diligently for our students and for what is best in

terms of their success.” The theme of the evening was “technology,” as Christopher Merz’s and Deirdre Golden’s fourthand sixth-grade students eagerly demonstrated math and English language arts programs currently being utilized on the district’s new Chromebooks. Art students in Michelle Block’s class also transposed a quote from Albert Einstein and hung a canvas painting in the boardroom, which reflects the district’s core values and seven habits of leadership, with each core

value and habit rendered as an app. Other gifts included a donation to the Ronald McDonald House from the Faculty Organization and the PTA’S gift of a Tile, a technological devise which assists in finding lost keys and other important items. The highlight of the evening, however, was teacher Lauren Pedone’s demonstration of a specially programmed Nao robot, that not only thanked each trustee for their service, but gave each a key chain printed on a 3-D Maker Bot printer.

Under the direction of Peter Kravitz, the Wantagh Warrior newspaper received 13 journalism awards during the annual Empire State School Press Association contest, held at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Communications. It is only the second time in 24 years that the newspaper has won individual gold awards. These awards were acquired by Class of 2016 graduate Sarah Sneddon in the category of news story, senior Karen Kawacki for a

Honors and recognitions abounded at the November 15th business meeting of the Merrick Board of Education, where Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick Palma, central administrators and board members observed School-Related Professionals Recognition Day by acknowledging the district’s hardworking staff members, one of whom was also named the November Merrick Star. After the meeting was called to order, members of the Levy Lakeside School Student Council expressed their gratitude to the secretaries, aides, assistants, monitors, security workers, bus

drivers, and custodial and maintenance staff who continually work to support the Merrick mission of providing the finest education to all children in the district. School-Related Professionals Recognition Day was signed into law on November 15th, 2007 by New York State Gov. Eliot Spitzer to acknowledge the support staff in schools whose diligent efforts make the day run smoothly for all students and faculty. Following, the board and Dr. Palma honored Merrick resident, Edna Lynn as the November Merrick Star. Lynn has served as a clerical aide at Birch School for more than 20

years. The Merrick Stars awards program was established in the 2015-2016 school year to recognize staff and students who go above and beyond to help the school community. Students in third through fifth grade at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District recently embarked on a voyage to different continents with the help of Michael “Mr. Mike” Harrold of Jambo Productions. Gathered in the allpurpose room, students journeyed to South America, North America

and Asia to learn about the history, geography and multiculturalism of each land. Through Mr. Mike’s pictures, personal accounts and artifacts, the students examined the native insects, animals, fashions and lifestyles of people around the world. In South America, for example, they studied beetles, vampire bats, butterflies, howler

monkeys and three-toed sloths; examined photos of a suspension bridge in Peru that crosses through the Amazon rainforest; and touched a shoe created out of an old car tire. By opening their eyes to the world around them, the students discovered how similar people are despite cultural differences.

Shipments of Sweets The student government at W.T. Clarke Middle School in the East Meadow School District is participating in a schoolwide Adopt a Soldier program with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Bellmore – Post 2770 this academic year. Adopt a Soldier is a volunteer-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to serving deployed United States servicemen and women. Through the program, soldiers receive care packages stocked with basic necessities such as cotton balls, clothing pins,

snacks, fresh socks and toiletries. The schoolwide initiative launched on October 1st, began with middle school students, teachers and faculty donating sweet treats in October and November. An assortment of candies, microwave popcorn, mac and cheese, cookies and energy bars, among other goods, were collected for soldiers to enjoy. The students established a goal of collecting 100 pounds of treats and goodies over the course

of the year. Thus far, the school organization has exceeded their year goal and received more than 200 pounds in donations just from the first drive. The student government has shipped off five large boxes of treats, with more still to come. Throughout the year, the student government will host other collection drives for U.S. military personnel, expressing their gratitude for the service they provide to protect the country and its freedoms.

Blue & Silver Luncheon Division Avenue High School’s Class of 2017 top achievers in the Levittown School District attended the annual Blue and Silver Luncheon to honor their hard work and dedication throughout four years of high school. In attendance were members of the board of education, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald, Central Office administrators and Division Avenue High School administration and guidance counselors. “You will have an

Parents and faculty gathered at the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Education Center in Levittown for the induction of 18 new members of the National Technical Honor Society. Adviser Christy Lombarski explained that being inducted into the society is one of the highest honors bestowed on a high school tech student, and selection is based upon a

student having achieved a cumulative GPA of 90 percent, demonstrating exceptional character and leadership skills, and participating in community service. After an induction of the new officers Arielle Connolly (president), Samantha Kanganis (vice president), Taylor Moy (secretary) and Frankie Piscitelli (treasurer), a candlelighting ceremony emphasized the core values

of the society. Each student was then called to the dais to receive a membership certificate, pin and tassel and to repeat the NTHS pledge. Attitude of Gratitude An attitude of gratitude resonated throughout Winthrop Avenue School in the Bellmore School District as students decorated a feather and jotted down ideas for which they are thankful

Shipments of Sweet Treats The student council at Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District recently asked students to donate their extra Halloween candy to the school’s Operation Sweet Tooth drive. Operation Sweet Tooth is a nonprofit local organization that sends candy to United States troops.

In collaboration with Merrick Avenue Middle School’s student council, hundreds of pounds of candy were collected and dropped off at a local dentist’s office that ships all donations overseas to the U.S. servicemen and women who are defending the nation’s freedoms. The donations of varied candies

and treats filled 24 large boxes. Levy Lakeside School is very proud of everyone for their generous contributions to a good cause and the terrific work that was accomplished when the two school communities came together.

One Lap at a Time Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District held its second annual Turkey Trot fundraiser on November 10th to help families have a bountiful Thanksgiving. Since September, students in kindergarten through fifth grade trained for the event by running laps outdoors during their gym classes to improve

their running times. In honor of this year’s race, students were encouraged to bring in canned goods and nonperishable items to assist Island Harvest in providing families on Long Island with a delicious Thanksgiving meal. On the day of the fundraiser, students in grades 3-5 ran 12 minutes around the building, while

those in K-2 completed the run in the gymnasium. Before they started the run, the students dropped off their donations in marked receptacles. To keep their energy and spirits up, members of the Parkway PTA cheered the students on and helped them stay hydrated by handing them cups of water as they ran.

Each day there was a French Fact of the Day, French Word of the Day and a Super Sleuth Question based on the flyers in the halls. Mr. Zawislak’s eighthgrade students competed in the school’s first French Competition. Three teams of students, each one representing a color of

the French flag, gathered in the auditorium and went head-to-head in four rounds: Name that Item, Francophone Trivia, What would you say? And Spell it in French.
