Collaborating on Community On November 14th, students from all four high schools in the BellmoreMerrick Central School District came together at Wellington C. Mepham High School for a Breakout EDU activity where they worked together to “breakout” of their “rooms.” The School and

Community Leadership students from Brian Joyce’s class at Sanford H. Calhoun, Kara McManus’ class at John F. Kennedy, Zachary Gosse’s class at the Meadowbrook Alternative Program and Jacqueline Geller’s class at Mepham participated in the Breakout EDU platform which fosters

critical thinking, collaboration, creative and communication. All four groups of students joined together again on November 21st at the Veterans Stand Down at the Freeport Armory, where they helped disabled veterans get goods and services they need.

As the weather becomes colder, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation are reminding New Yorkers to register their snowmobiles. S n o w m o b i l e registrations must be renewed annually. You

can do so online on the DMV website, by mail or in person at a DMV office. Last year, 106,867 snowmobiles were registered in New York. “Snowmobiling is one of the many ways residents and visitors can enjoy winter in New York,” said Terri Egan, DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner. “Before the snow starts to fall, make sure your snowmobile is registered

so you’re good to go as soon as the weather allows. You and your passengers should also wear a helmet so you can ride safely.” Members of a New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) Snowmobile Club can receive a voucher that includes an ID number which can be used to reduce your registration

Kindness Conquers All of his son. Strangers reached out to help him, without expecting anything in return. Due to the generosity that others were showing the Specht family, they wanted to pay it forward. The family vowed to do 500 acts of kindness and created pay it forward cards in memory of Rees. That is when the foundation was formed, urging others to participate in their own acts of kindness. Specht also spoke about bullying and the importance of being respectful to others. Showing his passion for science, Specht used colorful liquids in beakers to represent how quickly one person can impact another. “You have the power to raise others up or bring them down,” said Specht. “I think you know which one you want to use. That is the definition of respect. When you do that you respect yourselves first, you respect others second

and of course most of all, you respect life.” In addition, the students heard from author Catherine Ryan Hyde through a video message about why she decided on the age of 12 for her main character in her book “Pay it Forward” and stressed to students that they can make a difference in the world. Both Hyde and Specht reinforced the power of a chain of kindness. At the conclusion of the assemblies, Specht handed out pay it forward cards and encouraged the students to find ways to show kindness to others, adding to the already 470,000 acts of kindness that has been documented through the foundation. In March, the students will participate in a multimedia awards show called “Lights, Camera, Kindness,” where they will share their pay it forward stories through 60-second videos.

Levy Loves Vets Prior to the Veteran’s Day holiday observance, Levy Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick held its annual assembly to honor local veterans, specifically relatives of current Lakeside students. Eighteen veterans representing the five branches of the U.S. military were honored by their grandchildren, the school community and government officials. One elected official, New York State Assemblyman Dave McDonough, was also honored for his service. Hempstead Town

Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney and Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads joined McDonough, Merrick school officials and Levy Lakeside students and staff in the school gymnasium, where the proud families of the veterans witnessed this special ceremony. The Levy Lakeside fifthgrade Student Council Color Guard performed the opening exercises and the Pledge of Allegiance. Later in the program, each veteran was presented with a rose by their grandchild, and music from the division

of the army for which they served was played during the ceremony. Levy Lakeside also hosted a special breakfast for the veterans just prior to the ceremony. Each veteran also received a special gift bag filled with items supplied from local businesses as a small show of appreciation for all that they have done to protect our country and freedoms. Special thanks to the many local businesses that donated food and gifts. Additional thanks to Al Belbol Jr. for serving as the emcee for the event.

Wisdom Lane and Jonas E. Salk middle school students in the Levittown Public Schools recently heard from motivational speaker and cofounder of the ReesSpecht Life Foundation, Richard Specht. The assemblies titled “Cultivate Kindness” coincided with both middle school’s curriculum on kindness and the students summer reading book, “Pay it Forward” by Catherine Ryan Hyde. Specht, a former eighthgrade science teacher, created the ReesSpecht Life Foundation after the accidental death of his two-year-old son Richard Edwin-Ehmer Specht, also known as “Rees,” days before Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island. Specht spoke to the students about how his whole world changed that day. Students learned about the power of a simple act of kindness through the eyes of Specht who told them about his personal experience after the death

The Christmas Closet I used to love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I couldn’t wait for the lights to go up in my neighborhood, the house to smell like pine needles and all the cherished knick knacks to find their way to the shelves. That was, until I began accumulating more decorations than my own little apartment could handle. To say my closets resemble something out of an episode of Hoarders would be overly dramatic; however, the fact that my coat closet no longer accommodates clothing of any kind, but rather, a fairly hefty collection of boxes piled nearly to the ceiling, tends to give me pause. In order to sort through what belongs to Christmas, specifically, it is now necessary to remove nearly all of these containers, briefly peek inside, and then continue to dig. To be fair, these are not all my decorations. Not quite. Once my grandfather passed away and we began the painstaking process

of cleaning out the house my grandparents had called home for nearly 60 years, I acquired several boxes of cherished holiday possessions to add to my already-growing collection. Don’t get me wrong: to the outside observer, it probably doesn’t look like much. And, for the remainder of the year, the vast majority of lights and garlands and greens are out of sight. Only I know what lurks behind those closet doors. (And now, you, dear readers.) It is only once the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers has been packed away in the fridge and the sounds of Christmas carols have invaded the airwaves that my mind turns to the menagerie that lies within. Usually, it is a two-week ordeal; one for the random figurines and wreaths, accents and novelties - and the other, for the tree, my skinny, sixfoot tall “apartment tree” that comes neatly folded in a box, possibly the most compact of

all my original purchases. Last year, I kept the decorations fairly low-key, favoring instead only the most special of my grandparents’ holiday mementos, a few white lights and my very own Charlie Brown tree. This year… well, let’s just say the process may need to be expanded to three weeks. The way I see it, as long as all is completed by a week or so before Christmas Eve, there is plenty of time left to enjoy. I’ve never been part of the crowd that feels the need to put up the nativity as the last of the trick-or-treaters is leaving; nor do I rush to pack it all away before the final present has been unwrapped on Christmas morning. To each his or her own. However you choose to celebrate, whatever the extent of your decorations… as long as you enjoy them, even if no one else has occasion to see them, that is all that matters. Happy decorating.

Due to their collaboration with the Long Island Working Partnership to accommodate an employee with disabilities, the Levittown Public Schools was recently awarded by the Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation, for October’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The ACCES-VR, which is under the New York State Education Department,

traveled across the state to celebrate and recognize local businesses investing in their local human resources and providing the opportunity for skilled workers to contribute to their communities, earn a living wage and have meaningful careers. The district was among those recognized for demonstrating their commitment and understanding that all individuals deserve to participate and be included

East Meadow Honors In observance of Veterans Day, students in the East Meadow School District honored and thanked veterans for their service on November 9th. Bowling Green Elementary School students paid homage to those who have fought for the country by planting a sea of miniature American flags, provided to every student and faculty member courtesy of the PTA, on the school’s front lawn. Across the district at W.T. Clarke Middle School and East Meadow High School, students listened

to veterans speak about patriotism and acts of service to the nation. The middle schoolers heard from Vietnam veterans, who shared their experiences and discussed hardships of the war such as the extreme weather conditions of steaming temperatures and monsoons. The speakers gave students a firsthand glimpse into the war by circulating authentic materials such as soldiers’ helmets and vests, books, photo albums and enemy equipment. Sophomores at East Meadow High School

attended Veterans Day presentations held by U.S. Army veteran Joshua Rivera, who discussed his 15-month tour in Iraq. A graduate of East Meadow High School, Rivera shared childhood experiences, explained why he enlisted in the military and educated students about his uniform while demonstrating how to properly wear a gas mask. In turn, the students expressed their gratitude to the veterans for serving the country and devoting their lives to protecting the freedoms of the United States.

Kindness from Kiwanis The Kiwanis Kids club at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District held a Thanksgiving food drive from November 1st-16th that yielded roughly 1,100 pounds of donations for families in the community.

Bowling Green staff and students were encouraged to donate canned goods and nonperishable items such as canned corn, beans, rice, pasta and soup. Each week during the drive, the Kiwanis Kids members collected the

donated goods from each classroom. On November 17th, the Kiwanis Kids board members gathered to sort through the donations and prepared boxes for local families to celebrate the holiday.

Reinhard Early Childhood Center in the Bellmore School District, students dressed as Native Americans and pilgrims to demonstrate their thankfulness through art and song to the delight of parents and peers. The prekindergarten students entertained parents with the program’s annual singalong and

After a discussion about togetherness, friendship and family, kindergarten students in Fran Bauer’s and Stacy Epstein’s classes sang holiday songs for parents, including “I’m a Little Turkey” and “The Turkey’s a Funny Bird.” Decorative placemats were also made in Ms. Bauer’s class, while students in Ms. Epstein’s class enjoyed

a Thanksgiving feast, provided by parents. In addition, David Reilly’s first-grade students and Lauren Giordano’s kindergarten students collected in the cafeteria to celebrate Sharing Day, where the older and younger students collaborated on the making of craft turkeys and a thankful tree.

The fourth-graders in Elena DiCocco’s class at Barnum Woods Elementary School in the East Meadow School District invited veterans and active-duty service members and their families to a special Veterans Day ceremony on November 9th. Barnum Woods Principal Gregory Bottari welcomed families, staff and East Meadow Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth A. Card Jr., a U.S. Navy veteran himself, to the ceremony. “Today we celebrate America’s veterans for keeping this nation the land of the free and home of the brave,” said Bottari. “We appreciate the sacrifices they’ve given and

the honor they’ve bestowed upon our country.” During the event, students shared what they had learned about the federal holiday, including its origins and the meaning behind the “taps” bugle call. Students also enjoyed the privilege of introducing each of the veterans. Additionally, fourthgraders Michael Bellocco and Nicholas Guarneri folded an American flag into a tri-cornered shape that symbolizes the hats worn by soldiers during the Revolutionary War. As they did so, fellow classmates discussed the seven pillars of character that soldiers embody. Following this presentation, the class came together to perform

Mariah Carey’s “Hero,” and guests viewed a slideshow of the veterans being honored. Addressing DiCocco, her students and Mr. Bottari, Dr. Card said, “Thank you for your hard work in putting this ceremony together. It is truly an honor to be recognized by all of you.” To conclude the ceremony, students lit green lights as the veterans walked off the stage. The gesture was inspired by the “Greenlight a Vet” campaign, in which the green light symbolizes the support, appreciation and gratitude citizens have for the brave veterans of this country.

Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles filled classrooms at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District on November 21st for Visitor’s Day. The annual event gives the special guests a chance to participate in hands-on activities along with the students. Each grade level offered a special activity. Kindergartners and their guests made Thanksgiving centerpieces that looked like turkeys, while first-grade classrooms featured the Great Apple

Investigation in which partners observed, measured and tasted their apples. Literacy was the focus in third-grade classrooms, where students presented posters about their author study of Patricia Polacco, part of the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop initiative. Each student and his or her adult visitor made a piece of a quilt based on the book “The Keeping Quilt.” Fourth-grade focused on STEM, which builds skills in science, technology, engineering and math. Children and their adult

partners worked together to build structures that could support the weight of a textbook using a limited supply of gumdrops and toothpicks. “This was a nice opportunity for the parents and other special guests to come in and see what the children are learning, to get a glimpse of a day in the classroom,” said Principal Faith Skelos. “The teachers planned cooperative activities that allowed students and parents to do something together.”

Isles Are Cool Members of the New York Islanders National Hockey League team recently visited Birch School in Merrick to talk with students about their life experiences, including the importance of working hard in school, teamwork and making smart choices. Islanders John Tavares, Nick Leddy and Jordan Eberle began the program by introducing themselves and speaking about their lives. Throughout the nearly 90-minute assembly, players reinforced to students the importance of being respectful of others, taking care of their bodies by eating vegetables and

other healthy foods and paying close attention to their teachers while working to the best of their abilities in school. Students presented many thoughtful questions during the Q&A session, and in turn, the Islanders players gave great responses. Before closing the session, Birch Principal Kerri Galante asked the players to leave the students with one final thought. Each player agreed that students should follow their dreams, but most importantly, whatever they chose to pursue in life, work hard at it and put forth their best

effort. Birch students and staff showed their appreciation by donning Islanders attire and creating welcoming signs to be posted throughout the building. The players returned the favor by signing autographs and taking photos with students. Each student also took home an Islanders folder stuffed with pencils and Blades for Grades forms, a rewards program that provides students who earn good grades the opportunity to win complimentary tickets to an Islanders game.

Home and Careers club members at Wantagh Middle School put their newly acquired baking skills to good use during the making of pumpkin bread, under the direction of adviser Barbara Kearney. The students met after school to bake loaves, which will be donated

to the student council Thanksgiving food drive collection and distribution on November 20th. The afternoon baking session was the perfect opportunity for the club members to apply tips of the baking trade as they learned the difference between a wet and dry

measuring cup, the importance of cracking eggs on a flat surface and the potency of spices like nutmeg and cinnamon. After the recipe for the bread was mixed and the bread was baked, the students decorated the loaves to donate to the food drive.

Arcade of Compassion By building their own arcade games, Barnum Woods Elementary School fifth-graders in the East Meadow School District raised more than $1,700 for those affected by the recent hurricanes. This activity was inspired by the film “Caine’s Arcade.” According to the “Caine’s Arcade” website, 9-year-old Caine Monroy built his own cardboard arcade, filled with games and prizes, for customers

of his father’s auto parts store. When filmmaker Nirvan Mullick walked in, he became Caine’s first and only customer. Through this experience, Mullick created a documentary about Caine’s arcade while also establishing a scholarship fund for him to attend college. The fifth-graders at Barnum Woods carried out the idea over the course of a month by creating their own arcade games,

including foosball, Plinko, pinball and claw machines. Students, parents, faculty and administrators visited more than 100 games and paid 25 cents per game for the chance to win a prize, raising a grand total of $1,767.08 for the people affected by the four major hurricanes experienced in Texas, Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Energy Experts Summit Lane Elementary School students in the Levittown Public Schools learned the importance of being energy efficient with the help of the National Theatre for Children and PSEG Long Island’s show, The Energized Guyz on November 17th. Classes gathered to watch the program, which has traveled to 160 elementary schools across Long Island since September. The show focused on what energy is, the uses of energy, how

energy is wasted and ways to conserve energy through the story of Nikki Neutron, a junior superhero who must defeat the Sneaker, who is wasting energy around the city. Students cheered and laughed as characters were brought to life on stage through performers JP Zippi and Carlye Messman. Student volunteers were encouraged to participate in the performance and received their own superhero mask for their help in defeating the

Sneaker. “It’s really important that we educate and help children and their families understand the importance of our natural resources and using energy wisely,” said George Coburn, customer experience manager for PSEG Long Island. “Even young students can understand that they have energy choices. The younger they begin learning, the more likely they will retain these concepts throughout their life.”

Chatterton Elementary School in Merrick recently turned up the STEAM in its all-purpose room through an innovative and engaging experience that converted it into a STEAM museum. Thanks to an in-house, K-6 field trip made possible through the PTA Cultural Arts Committee, Mobile Ed Productions brought a series of hands-on STEAM-related activities to the school that provided something interesting for all grade levels. Students were encouraged to explore

the museum at their own pace and manage their time between stations that appealed to their individual interests. Students built a parabolic arch from large foam blocks to learned how this incredibly strong structure functions in the process. They also created a “friction raceway” using different textured rollers and converted kinetic energy into electricity using a bike generator. The students operated programmable NASA-type robots, as well as learned

about NAO robots that possess a host of humanlike abilities. “We thank the Cultural Arts Committee for bringing this exciting, exploratory show to our school. The kids really enjoyed this,” said Chatterton Principal Dana Bermas. “The mobile STEAM museum met a wide range of our students’ interests, inspiring critical thinking while enhancing their overall science literacy.”

Letters of Gratitude In honor of Veterans Day, fourth-graders at East Broadway Elementary School in the Levittown Public Schools recently discussed and read about the importance of the

day, while showing their support for local veterans. As a way to honor, appreciate and recognize those who made incredible sacrifices for freedom, the students wrote friendly

letters to a veteran to thank them for their bravery and service to the country. The letters will be delivered to the Northport VA Medical Center in Northport.

which they are thankful. Principal Anthony Ciuffo said the feast was the culmination of an interdisciplinary unit in which students read about and researched the nation’s first settlers and used their artistic talents to decorate the tables and entertain parents.

Paper airplanes were flying through the air recently at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District as sixthgraders learned about aerodynamics. The project was designed to teach students about the scientific method. They had

to explore variables that would affect how far their planes could fly and come up with different designs. The students studied various aerodynamic principles such as lift and drag. On launch day, students tested their control planes, which all had the same

design, and their variable planes that had different shapes and sizes. They also measured the distance their planes flew. The project included a math component as students collected data and averaged how far each plane flew during multiple test flights.
