In order to help students effectively prepare for a meaningful and purposeful career, Wantagh High School set aside one full week to enrich the business curriculum with workshops and lectures from college professors and business professionals.

Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District recently hosted Ryan’s Story, an antibullying program based on Ryan Halligan, a 13 year-old middle school student from Vermont who committed suicide on October 7th, 2003 because of bullying and cyberbullying. At the assembly at Woodland, Ryan’s father John Halligan spoke with eighth-grade students about his son’s life and the

humiliation he endured by peers at school and on the Internet, as well as the devastating impact that his son’s suicide has had on his family and the importance and power of forgiveness. John Halligan, a vocal supporter for more education and prevention of bullying, cyberbullying and teen suicide across and outside of the U.S., spearheaded the Vermont Bully Prevention bill, which was signed into law in 2004. He also led

the passage of the law pertaining to mandatory suicide prevention education in public schools in 2006. The assembly is an example of the district’s commitment to supporting the social and emotional learning and development of all K-12 students in an effort to make schools safe and foster a caring climate while enhancing motivation and high achievement.

student assistance program coordinator at LICADD, was on hand to accept the check donation and speak with students about the dangers of drugs. Ms. Ganz and students discussed the signs and symptoms of drug use, how students can educate themselves on the effects of drugs, and the importance of a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

activities and adherence to the highest standards of morality and ethics. Superintendent of Schools Louis R. DeAngelo congratulated new members on their induction and encouraged them to continue to strive for excellence in all their endeavors and to lead by example. “The choices you’ve made and the actions you’ve taken have earned you a place of honor in this prestigious society,” Mr. DeAngelo said. “By your actions and your commitment to excellence, you have earned the distinction of membership in a society to which only approximately 10 percent of students nationally gain entry. Enjoy this evening among your parents, friends, teachers

and administrators and revel in the sense of accomplishment which is rightfully yours.” After being congratulated by Mr. DeAngelo and East Meadow High School Principal Richard Howard, the new members received honorary certificates from NHS advisers Evelyn Sideri and Kim Themistocleous and were officially inducted. Tis’ The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments… There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.

Tis’ the season to be jolly, right? And why not … we spend enough of our days consumed by outside issues beyond our control. We deserve this brief reprieve from the madness, don’t we? No time like the present to savor the moment and enjoy all of life’s blessings. And, for me, this holiday season will be a year of firsts: First Christmas in my new apartment. First opportunity to decorate and put up my very own tree. First chance to perhaps host a gathering

of my own and – dare I even say it – cook?!? Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious! But still, the season will be exciting. It is a time for establishing new traditions and carrying on old ones. For reconnecting with those we have lost touch with over the last year. For spending quality time with those who mean the most. It is time, time we cannot get enough of. However you choose to spend it, may you enjoy it wholeheartedly.

It’s that magical time of year again, when everyone will be looking for that perfect gift in a local store, shopping mall or on the Internet. But as the old adage goes, “the best things in life are free,” and it certainly rings true at the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter, where all adoption fees are being waived from November 22nd, 2013 through January 5th, 2014 for the town’s annual “Home for the Holidays” pet adoption program. “There’s no place like home for the holidays, and the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter has many beautiful dogs and cats looking for a loving family to adopt them into their lives,” said Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray. During “Home for the Holidays,” the town is waiving fees on adoptions. Additionally, there will

is offering free photos with Santa, raffles for great prizes, a bake sale, hot chocolate, and of course, some great holiday music. Attendees bringing toys and treats for shelter animals will be eligible for a door prize. This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic. So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Towards the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis. Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy towards school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses! For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class. This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress

that comes with waiting for your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down. These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their car, many students feel that their struggle is over. These students have done it, they have completed their journey. Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip! Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average

Each time a rude word was said or an unkind act unfolded, the student crumpled up the paper until it became a ball, symbolizing how small malicious acts can make a person feel. “When you say something unkind, you may not see the bumps and bruises at first,” Mr. Goss said in his narration. “But these acts and words leave scars.” The students then

watched a popular music video featuring Sara Bareilles’ “Brave” and a performance from professional acting troupe Tom and Jerry about bullying and peer pressure. According to Mr. Goss, the “Get A Voice” assembly was about providing students with the language and courage to use their voices in a positive way. Fun With Rough Riders Levittown students at Summit Lane had the rare opportunity to learn new moves and techniques and to play soccer with the Long Island Rough Riders soccer team. The forum supported the emphasis on

exercise and healthy living promoted through the district’s annual Levittown Educators Against Destructive Decisions, or LEADD, Week. During the workshops by both men and women

players, the students were divided into small groups on Division Avenue High School’s turf field. A Rough Rider worked with each of the teams to teach soccer skills and promote healthy living.

Thanksgiving Travel Tips - With Pets Are you taking a Thanksgiving Day road trip with your pet? Before you start dreaming of turkey and homemade pies, keep in mind that it’s important to plan ahead for pet travel and always keep the best interests of your furry, four-legged friend in mind. Traveling with your pet can be a wonderful and bonding experience or a not so pleasant one. It’s all a matter of proper planning and preparation. Your first decision is whether to bring your pet along with you on your trip. Not all pets are suited for travel. While it may be very tempting to bring your pet with you, keep in mind that not all pets are happy travelers. Things to consider include your pet’s temperament, any physical impairments, or if your pet suffers from an illness. If you’re uncertain whether your pet is suited for travel, you may want to consult with your veterinarian. If you determine that your pet is up for the trip, then following some common sense tips will help to ensure that your Thanksgiving Day travels with your furry friend is enjoyable for both of you! Pre-Travel Preparation Healthy Start: The last thing you need is a sick pet when traveling. This means a visit to the vet for a medical checkup and to ensure that your pet is up-to-date with all necessary vaccinations. The veterinarian can also issue a health certificate for your pet. If you and your

pet will be traveling across state lines, you must obtain a recent health certificate and a certificate of rabies vaccination. If your plans include traveling with your pet from the United States to Canada, you will need to bring along a certificate issued by a veterinarian that clearly identifies the animal and certifies that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies during the preceding 36 month period. Be sure to contact the government of the province you plan to visit as each province has its own requirements. Plan for Restraint: Have a plan for how you’re going to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle. This is a crucial element of pet travel that is not taken seriously enough. The reality is that hundreds of pets are injured or even killed each year because they are allowed free reign in cars, trucks, RVs, and SUVs. Even more real is the toll in human life and property damage caused when an “enthusiastic” animal distracts a driver, leading to an accident. Vehicle pet barriers, pet seat belts, pet car seats, and pet travel crates are all excellent ways to keep your pet (and you) safe when traveling in your vehicle. It’s important to familiarize your pet with the vehicle restraint of choice weeks or months before traveling so that they are comfortable. Temporary ID Tag: In the unfortunate event that your pet runs off

while you’re traveling. A temporary identification tag, along with a photo of your pet will help ensure their safe return. Attach a temporary ID tag to your pet’s collar in addition to their permanent tag. Include the address and phone number of where you’ll be staying along with your cell phone number and perhaps your email address. This is one of the most important aspects of traveling with your pet, but also one of the most overlooked. In addition, bring along a current photo of your pet. A photograph will make it easier for others to help you find your lost pet. Packing Essentials: When packing for your pet include an ample supply of your pet’s food. Don’t rely on stopping along the way to pick up their food or picking it up at your final destination. Their particular brand of food may not be readily available and it is not advisable to introduce your pet to a new brand of food while traveling. Other essentials to pack for your pet include collapsible travel food and water bowls, bedding, litter and litter box, leash, collar and tags, favorite toys, grooming supplies, a pet first-aid kit and any necessary medications. And of course, be sure to always have an ample supply of water available for your pet. Secure Pet Friendly Accommodations: If you’re planning a long journey and will need to stay in

lodging on the way to your final destination, be sure to secure these pet friendly accommodations before you hit the road. Map out where you’ll be spending the night and arrange for lodging along the way. Pet policies do change some times without notice and accommodations may be limited so it’s recommended that you make reservations in advance. Medical Records: In case of a medical emergency while traveling, it is advisable to bring along your pets medical records along with your vet’s contact information should they be needed for consultation. Hitting The Road No Heads Out the Window: Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the best part of the road trip, it’s not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris. This should go without saying, but NEVER travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some states have laws restricting such transport and it is always dangerous. Frequent Pit Stops: Always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet. Be sure to stay in this area particularly when you pet

needs a potty break, and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet. When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and wearing a collar with a permanent and temporary travel identification tag. Proper Hydration: During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle. Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach. Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water. Watch the Food Intake: It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel. Be sure to feed them their regular pet food and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending!). Don’t Leave Them Alone: Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves. Practice Restraint: Be sure that your pet is safely restrained in your vehicle. Utilizing a pet safety harness, travel kennel, vehicle pet barrier, or pet car seat are the best ways to keep your pet safe. They not only protect your pet from injury, but they help by keeping them from

distracting you as you drive. A safety harness functions like a seatbelt. While most pets will not have a problem adjusting to it, you may want to let them wear the harness by itself a few times before using it in the vehicle. If your pet prefers a travel kennel, be sure it is well ventilated and stabilized. Many pet owners prefer vehicle barriers, particularly for larger pets. Vehicle barriers are best suited for SUVs. Smaller pets are best suited for pet car seats. The car seat is secured in the back seat using a seat belt and your pet is secured in the car seat with a safety harness. In addition to it’s safety features, a pet car seat will prop up your smaller pet, allowing them to better look out the window. No matter what method you choose, back seat travel is always safer for your pet. Safe and Comfortable: Whatever method you choose to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle, be sure to make their comfort a priority. Just as it’s important for your “seat” to be comfortable for your long road trip, your pet’s seat should be comfortable too. Typically their favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick. There are also some safe and very cozy pet car seats available that your pet may find quite comfy. Careful preparation is the key to ensuring that you and your pet have a happy and safe trip.
