uring a visit from Valerie Pfundstein, author of a picture book titled Veteran Heroes In Our Neighborhood, Lee Road Elementary School students in the Levittown School District learned that veterans are similar to “superheroes” because they have secret identities, save people, keep communities safe and dress in uniforms. After reading her book, Pfundstein encouraged the students to ask local veterans to tell their story and write them down.

Back In Black By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Black Friday is nearly upon us once again. Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain? Notice I said the morning after Thanksgiving, not the night of, not the day of, and certainly not the weeks leading up to… Black Friday festivities should be reserved for the day itself; that’s what makes it unique. Of course, we now have Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and a host of other “specialty” days to
observe as well, each with its own nuances – but all come down to the same basic concept: saving money. In all honesty, there has been some argument as to whether these days actually bring the best bargains, with some contending that the last minute rush in the days leading up to Christmas Eve is really the best bet for cost cutting. And then there are those who, as we sit here today, have already shopped, wrapped and shipped all their presents before the turkey hits the table. It would be nice if we could all take a step back and view holiday shopping as the joyous task it was meant to be, rather
than as a chore, a checklist of tasks to be crossed off one by one. Gift giving is meant to be an expression of appreciation for those we love, a token of thoughtfulness… not a source of stress and aggravation. The second it becomes that is the moment you need to pause and reevaluate your approach. So as you enjoy your Thanksgiving dinners gathered around the table with your families and friends, savor the moment. And as you embark on your shopping journey, be it Friday, Saturday, Monday, Christmas Eve or any time in between, take that same sentiment with you. Happy Shopping!

This year’s event celebrates Mercy continuing to shine with more than a Century of Compassionate Care to Mercy’s surrounding communities. The proceeds from the 78th Annual Mercy Ball will support Mercy Medical Center’s new Center for Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Healing opening early 2015. Wellington C. Mepham High School, in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, got a rare treat on November 12th when the United State Marine Band performed in the school’s auditorium. Hundreds packed the venue at Mepham to hear this rare performance, with
a special guest conductor: Mepham’s own band director, Brian Neiderman. Neiderman, a Marine veteran himself, pressed the Marine Band for years to visit the high school for a performance. The band, made up entirely of musicians that sign on as active members

of the military, appear for approximately 500 performances per year and receive twice as many requests. Neiderman conducted the band’s famous marches and hymns during the show.
The Premier of Massapequa Restaurant Week (MRW) kicks off on December 7th, offering seven days of local dinner specials at area restaurants. During MRW, which runs from December 7th through 13th, participating restaurants will be offering prix fix menu specials for $25, appetizer-entrée-dessert, and other specials or coupons throughout the week. Weekly restaurant gift certificate giveaways will be raffled off through social media for each premiere restaurant participating. New Innovation Station The Levittown Public Library held a Grand Opening Celebration of the new Innovation Station (a MakerSpace) on Saturday, October 18th. This successful all day event began with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony which included Elected Officials, invited guests, the Library Director, Library Board of Trustees, and Library Foundation members. Following this ceremony, exciting events were planned throughout the library. People of all ages were invited to discover what this MakerSpace, a space provided for people to gather, create, connect, and learn by doing, has to offer. Currently, the library’s Innovation Station offers a 3D printer, iMac computers, a sewing machine, embroidery machine, Ellison Die machine, Cricut papercutting machine, and other do-it-yourself
equipment and items. There is also a kitchen for cooking programs and use by not-for-profit groups. Not only will library staff conduct programs in this new space but patrons may individually use the equipment. Appointments are necessary and may be made on the library website, www.levittownpl. org. Activities that were held throughout the Grand Opening included 3D printer and scanner demonstrations, a baking demonstration, a teen “Girls Made with Code Party,” a teen “Cracking the Code for Boys” program, “Boneyard Pets by 32 Square” hands-on 3D puzzles, an electronic petting zoo, Ellison Die, Cricut papercutting, and button making demonstrations. There was also a sewing and embroidery machine demonstration, and a “littleBits” activity with

Museum Visit As part of a unit on neighborhoods and civic responsibility, East Broadway students learned about the history of their community with a visit to the Levittown Museum. Located in the Levittown Memorial Education Center basement, this robust collection of neighborhood artifacts gave the students a clear vision of life in the planned
community built by Levitt & Sons between 1947 and 1951. Under the direction of tour guides Geri Raab and Irene Metzler, both Levittown natives, the students learned that Hempstead Turnpike was once a landing strip, that no one was allowed to hang laundry outside on a Sunday, and that there were no fences built around the
original 17,447 cape and ranch-style houses. Raab and Metzler gave a tour of a model kitchen, living room and child’s bedroom in a Levitt home and showed the students a number of toys made popular in the 1950s. They even listened to recordings of the Howdy Doody Show played on a 78 record.
Thanking Veterans An important message of thanks to active servicemen and veterans canvased the walls outside the art classrooms at Wantagh Middle School as students in grades 6-8 created a thank-you mural in honor of Veterans Day. Under the direction of art teacher Jaclyn Gentilesco, students used print making and collage techniques to create scrapbook pages of family servicemen, veteran photos and patriotic symbols.
Students in Athanasia Karaiskos’ class used their digital arts design application techniques to make stars lined with quotes to create a shimmer as viewers walked past. In addition, students wrote haiku poems expressing appreciation to accompany the artwork. The thank-you mural was particularly poignant for student William Tabor Smith, whose father served in Iraq during four tours of duty.
“Having him in Iraq was surreal,” William said. “There was one time when my dad was shot at while talking on the phone to my mother.” Gentilesco said the goal of the project was to thank those who have risked their lives for the country. “The project particularly made an impression on the students, especially those students who have family currently serving,” she said. “The message really hit home.”

Superhero Vets
During a visit from Valerie Pfundstein, author of a picture book titled Veteran Heroes In Our Neighborhood, Lee Road Elementary School students in the Levittown School District learned that veterans are similar to “superheroes” because they have secret identities, save people, keep communities safe and dress in uniforms. “I know some
superheroes,” Pfundstein told the students. “They are in my family and neighborhood. My grandfather had a secret identity as a mailman.” Pfundstein relayed the stories of several veteran superheroes including her friend Manny, Babylon Town Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon and Lucca the retired bomb dog. She explained that
veteran superheroes are often dressed as mailmen, firefighters, politicians or regular people. Very seldom do veterans offer to tell their stories. After reading her book, Pfundstein encouraged the students to find veterans in their neighborhood or family, ask them to tell their story and then write down the veterans’ stories.

Showcase Of Talent Culinary and food service students enrolled in Levittown’s Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center prepared a restaurant-quality meal for family, staff and Board of Education trustees in the Panther Room at Levittown Memorial Education Center. The menu included
prime rib, baked potatoes and cheesecake. In her welcoming address, teaching assistant Lillian Creedon told parents and staff they should be proud of the students’ abilities to prepare such an excellent meal. “The goal of our program is to teach students real-
life skills they can utilize in the workforce,” she said. Guests were invited to watch a slideshow of the various culinary activities offered throughout the semester.
