“Tis the time of year to be thankful, and I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my Human, as I’ve been told by many fans that I am far too tough on her, what with my lack of fancy accommodations and inconsistent feeding schedule. I suppose I have been a bit harsh in my criticisms. Us bettas tend to have one-track minds, you know. In truth, I do appreciate the love and attention she shows me – and she has been better of late with notifying me when dinner is going to be delayed. Speaking of, I hear there’s a large meal coming up – a Thanksgiving, I believe it’s called – where humans
gather ‘round to eat a large stuffed bird. What a disturbing concept. I sure hope there’s no fish on the menu! I do hope I get an invite and my very own place setting though. Day after day, I watch my human unload groceries, chop vegetables, prepare dinner… and then it disappears into the dining room, never to be seen again. All that food, and no leftovers for Buddy? Maybe if I sit at the table and stare at their plates, someone will drop a morsel into my bowl. One can only hope. There I go again, with my culinary obsession. Tiny brain, eyes-bigger-thanstomach. Typical fish. But seriously, a sincere thanks to all my loyal followers who constantly write in to my
human with fan mail, asking about my status and wishing me well. Your interest in the musings of a tiny finned creature are appreciated. Nine months and still going strong! Guess I should start working on my Christmas list… maybe a larger bowl, a small castle, some fun foliage to frolic in, a leafy hammock to sleep in… Is anyone writing this stuff down? Oh, and maybe a small finned friend to play with? As long as they’re not too fancy and colorful, that is… we can’t have any other creatures stealing too much of my Human’s attention. ‘Til next time, Happy Thanksgiving to all the humans out there. Save me some leftovers!

Family Project Party The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Family Project will once again host its annual free Holiday Party on December 15th from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Grand Avenue Middle School, offering a district wide celebration of students with disabilities and their families. Attendees are encouraged to bring a
dessert, while a local DJ will provide entertainment. Volunteers from Vets to Vets will be on hand to assist, as will district staff and students. According to Steve Rose, director of the Family Project, this effort “has taken on a life of its own.” Rose worked in district as a social worker and now remains on staff to oversee the weekly
Family Project events and activities, which are held on Tuesday evenings at Grand Avenue. Students receiving special education services and their families are encouraged to attend. Other high students often volunteer for this program. “I enjoy watching young people do this incredible work,” Rose added.
Robotic Connection Armed with iPhones and spherical robots, students in Richard Perry’s 11thgrade AP English class at Calhoun High School sought to make an empathetic connection with their assigned reading lesson, The Grapes of Wrath. “This project started last year when I found that students weren’t connecting with the book,” Perry said. “This lesson gets them starting to think like programmers while connecting them to the literature.” The Sphero robots were made possible through a grant from the company who makes them. Perry, an Apple Educator as well, was challenged to come up with creative ways to incorporate them into his classroom. His challenge
to students was to have them come up with ways to navigate the Sphero robot - using wireless controls on their iPhones – through a home-built model mountain. Perry noted that the process requires much trial and error and can lead to frustration. “This allows the students to experience failure, as the Joads did while traveling through the mountains (in the novel, The Grapes of Wrath),” Perry said. “I want them to be able to empathize with the characters.” At the end of the project, students had five minutes to get the robot from one side of the model to the other. They had to document their attempts and failures. “This will be used to pass on to the next group,”
Perry said. After navigating the even tiled floor of their classroom, Joe Kennedy equipped his robot with three rubber bands he had on his wrist. “I put them around the ball to give it more traction,” he said, adding that he thinks this will make the robot be successful when attempting the model. The connection was made clear to Chad Ackerman when he was watching his fellow students’ robots collide as they all attempted to master a ramp. “They’re like the Joads and Wilson families fighting,” Ackerman noted to his teacher. “See, I’m making connections, Mr. Perry,” he quipped.

Student Spotlight TRAVELING BACK IN TIME TO THE 1920’S SUBMITTED BY: KRISTIN DITRANO, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
On October 27th, Fairfield School, also known as Massapequa Avenue School, turned ninety. The fifth and sixth grade gathered together and learned about our school and how special it truly is. At the end of the ceremony, the historical society unveiled an historical marker. Some things I learned about the early days of our school are: there weren’t houses surrounding our school like today; there were open fields with cows. I also learned the kids didn’t ride on the bus to school; they walked, rode a bike or road in a carriage pulled by a horse, if they were lucky. Fairfield School only had one room that held multiple grades. The last thing I learned was a classroom could have up to 30 children but only have one teacher.
In the 1920’s, Sebastian Hilton invented a contraption that changed the life of many children. This contraption was invented in Chicago, where Sebastian and his mathematical father lived. Mr. Hilton invented the jungle gym! Sebastian’s father wanted to build a play structure that kids could play on and learn about x, y and z coordinates at the same time. This invention is important because the jungle gym is an object enjoyed by many children. I can connect to the invention of the jungle gym because every time I go to the park, I play on the three dimensional figure and it entertains many kids. In the 1920’s, the stock market crashed and many people lost all their life savings. As a result of this, people
started to live in Hoovervilles. People made houses out of boxes and other scrap material they found. Hoovervilles were found all over the country, but some major Hoovervilles were found in St.Louis, Missouri, Seattle and Washington. This event took place in the 1920’s and ended in 1929. This event is important because many people were homeless for many years because of the stock market. I can connect to this because whenever I go to the city, I see homeless people living in cardboard boxes and this reminds me of Hoovervilles. As you can see, the 1920’s was a challenging time because of the crash in the stock market. This major event will be put down in history just like our school was on October 27th.

commitment to public education. Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg explained that Board Recognition Night “celebrates the trustees leadership roles” and is a way to thank the trustees for their “ongoing commitment to education” and the students of Wantagh. Elementary students presented the Board with a colorful banner decorated with each of the schools’ mascots and a message stating, “Thank you Board of Education for all that you do.” On behalf of the middle school, students Katie Duggan and Kaitlin Steingruebner presented the trustees with a photo album of district initiatives. The high school donated $100 towards the newly renovated library’s Collaborative Corner, while student Kyle Neverson and Warrior Wellness Club advisor Megan Musacchio gave the trustees homemade granola. The WDPTA, 6-12 Association, Booster Club and Bandwagon Club donated books to the middle school and high school libraries and each of the elementary school PTA’s donated books to the elementary school libraries. The Wantagh Teachers Association made a donation to the Wantagh Foundation Scholarship Fund in remembrance of former principal Jeanette Stern, while the Central Office donated various science books to the schools’ libraries. Board President AnnMarie Sturniolo thanked the community for their generous offerings. “It is a pleasure to serve our community,” she told the audience.

Legally Blonde Under the direction of Lisa Levenberg and Carisa Wellenreuther, MacArthur High School’s talented cast and crew drew a packed house for opening night of the musical comedy “Legally Blonde.” After a successful preview matinee for senior citizens, the 100-plus member cast, crew and pit orchestra musicians entertained the audience with their rendition of author Amanda Broan’s and MGM Motion Picture’s tale of a young woman who realizes her potential to practice law and sets out to prove herself to the world and to help others. On stage, Danielle Ducey
and Heath Larssan played the lead roles of former girlfriend and boyfriend Elle and Warner, with Mackenzie Zorn as Warner’s fiancé (Vivienne) and Elle’s best friends played by Gia Gatt (Margot), Camilla Montoya (Pilar) and Michelle Shapiro (Serena). Ted Fiber also played the role of Professor Callahan, with Joseph Calvo as the young attorney. In addition, manicurist Paulette’s (Amanda King) and Brooke Wyndham’s (Jenna Stillman) legal issues assisted in the development of Elle’s newly acquired skills. Members of the Greek Chorus and Company added to the
upbeat tone of the play with their performances of “So Much Better,” “Omigod You Guys,” and other memorable lyrics. The show’s success is also due to the artistic talents of choreographers Jennifer Mitchell and Ryan Nolin, stage manager Madison Sawula, pit orchestra director Iris Winter and set builder Michael Sawula. Ms. Levenberg thanks everyone who was involved with the musical production by saying, “There are no words to express how proud I am of all the work you put into making this show possible. Dreams really do come true.”
Honoring Our Veterans In honor of Veteran’s Day, Levy Lakeside Elementary School in the Merrick School District held a ceremony honoring the men and women who serve our country. The fifth-grade color guard opened the ceremony with a performance as students sang patriotic songs including the
“Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless the USA.” Following their performance, Principal Libby Trencheny expressed her gratitude and the importance of honoring our veterans. During the ceremony, Assemblyman Dave McDonough saluted the service men and women
for all they do to keep our nation safe. Army veteran Gary Blair spoke to students about his service and time in the Army. The ceremony concluded with students presenting a rose to the veterans thanking them for their service and dedication to our country.

Something Sweet In honor of Veteran’s Day, members of Lakeside’s student council collaborated with the Merrick Avenue Middle
School to donate candy to Operation Sweet Tooth. Operation Sweet Tooth is a non-profit local organization that sends
candy to United States troops. During the course of a week, Lakeside students collected approximately 30 boxes worth of candy.
Shore Road students in Bellmore learned that giving directions in correct sequence is an important skill in writing computer code. During an Hour of Code with technology teacher Lauren Pedone, the students learned block based coding used in Java Script, a form of code used in computer games Angry Birds and Ice Age. Ms. Pedrone used masking tape to create a grid on the classroom floor, which contained blocks with X’s and colored
squares. A student called the “run” was then given a series of directions by peers, who held postcard “blocks” written with “turn left,” move forward” and “turn right.” The students were able to switch out the directional blocks to acquire the desired result. By following the correct sequence, the “run” then moved to the desired color square on the grid. “This process is used in computer programming to build a sequence,” Ms. Pedone said. “The lesson teaches the students to
think sequentially and to give directions in a computer language.” The students also had the opportunity to write code by logging onto www. studio.code.org, where they completed puzzles using sequencing and block based coding. Ms. Pedrone said there will be a new opportunity for students to access their account at home or at school to complete 20 hours of additional programming on the studio.code.org website.

understand the background of mathematical concepts.” He is among 84 students this year to be named a Long Island Scholar of Mathematics. There were approximately 600 students nominated by schools on Long Island and selection to the institute implies that the student is among the top one-tenth of one percent in math of
all students on Long Island in his or her grade. “The students applied last January when they were in ninth grade Geometry A,” said James Morris, the math chairperson. “Students had to complete an application, which included a letter of recommendation from the teacher, and then they had to take an exam last March.”

Veterans Celebrated Barnum Woods Elementary School fourthgraders in Ellen DiCocco’s class paid tribute to family members and friends who served in the armed services during a heartfelt assembly held on November 10th. The Veterans Day Ceremony began with a student led processional that ended with the fourthgraders singing and waving flags, as each veteran guest passed by to walk to their seats on the school stage. It continued with students reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and leading those in attendance in the “Star Spangled Banner.” Barnum Woods Principal Gregory Bottari extended his appreciation to the
veterans present and reminded students why they should never forget the selfless contributions the men and women made to our country. “It is our privilege to say thank you to all of our nation’s veterans,” Mr. Bottari said. “The price for freedom is high and we can’t forget to thank those who are responsible for it.” Students shared historical information, sang and recited poems at the ceremony. They also paid tribute to family members who served in the armed services who were unable to attend. Mrs. DiCocco and the students also created a board with photos and information on their veteran family
members, which was highlighted at the event. “When I would ask the children what a veteran was they would be confused. Now they know the branches of the armed forces and why we are celebrating, but most importantly they know to respect our veterans,” Barnum Woods fourthgrade teacher Ellen DiCocco said. Mr. Bottari also took time to honor Mrs. DiCocco, who has successfully run the Veterans Day Ceremony for 10 years. Mrs. DiCocco said she started the event because she wanted the children to have an understanding of what makes a person a veteran.
Newest Addition Bowling Green Elementary School students of Ms. Bertolini’s third-grade class created a tropical habitat to house their new class pets. Students researched class pets that would best fit the capacity of
their classroom. Within their research, students identified the tetra goldfish as the best class pet because they can withstand temperature changes, adapt to new situations and require minimum care. Tetra goldfish also eat
remnants off the bottom of the tank, keeping their home clean. Following their research, the class constructed a fish tank filled with gravel rocks, plants, a filter and heater for their new class pets to swim in.

Mighty Maya’s Story Dear Community, I am writing this letter to ask for your prayers and any help you can give to beautiful “Mighty” Maya, who was born June 17th, 2015 with a rare neurological disorder called Hemimegalence phaly. This disorder causes catastrophic epileptic seizures that, in time, could severely debilitate Maya’s cognition and even kill her. Anti-seizure medi cation will not work to control her seizures. The only way to help Maya live a productive and fulfilling life is to have her undergo radical surgery, a hemisphe rectomy, that disconnects the “bad” half of her brain. Maya’s parents are asking for donations to be used toward the cost of everything associated with Maya’s journey, from travel, to medical needs, to physical and occup ational therapy, among other expenses. We know that Mighty Maya is stron g enough for the challenges ahead and we thank you for helping her get there by either spreading the word and donating to her cause. At the age of only four months, Maya had her brain surgery on October 28th, to disconnect the “bad” half of her brain , at Boston Children’s Hospital. After being in ICU for a number of days, Maya is now recovering in inpatient care, where she started receiving physi cal therapy soon after her brain surgery.

new initiative based on the research program, Peaceful School Bus Program, designed for all students to end inappropriate behavior on buses while establishing an atmosphere of respect and cooperation. During their Peaceful

Adoption Fees Waived there will be no charge for a host of inoculations and services for adopted pets. Those services include spaying/neutering, rabies vaccinations, microchipping and, for cats, testing for feline AIDS/leukemia. What’s more, the town has partnered with three local sponsors, Island Trees Veterinary Hospital in Hicksville, Dog Grooming by Rachel in Bellmore and Fido Fitness Club in Woodmereall of which will be providing free gifts for each pet adopted from the town shelter during the Home for the Holidays program. “We thank Island Trees Veterinary Hospital, Dog Grooming by Rachel and Fido Fitness Club for providing even more of an incentive for residents to come to the town shelter in order to add to their family during this holiday season,” said Senior Councilman Santino. Neighbors can get a head start on the adoption process by visiting the Animal Shelter’s website at www.toh.li/animal-shelter,
where they can view cats and dogs that are currently up for adoption. “There are so many beautiful, adoptable pets available at the shelter. I hope that if your family is considering bringing a new dog or cat into your home during this festive time, you consider adopting before shopping,” added Councilwoman King Sweeney. The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter is located at 3320 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh. Division Avenue High School dedicated the installation of a new flagpole and Remembrance Garden during a ribboncutting ceremony on November 12th. Levittown community members, Central Office administration and students attended the event. It honored veterans of all wars, everyday heroes and those whose lives were taken on September 11th, 2001. Principal Joan Lorelli explained that the Remembrance Garden, which houses a plaque and benches for everyday reflection, is a place
“dedicated to anyone who believes that in order to preserve our great nation, we must be vigilant, strong and visible.” She also noted that the event took place during the week of Veterans Day to honor all American soldiers around the world who have fought or are on active duty. “What more fitting week is there for us to remember the veterans of all wars – the men and women in uniform whose debt we can never repay, but for who our gratitude and respect endures forever,” she said. The school’s new flagpole was purchased through a grant from
New York State Senator Kemp Hannon. Head custodian Larry Diaz then proposed that the school add benches and a remembrance garden, for which he was recognized during the ceremony. In addition to a formal ribbon cutting, the concert choir, under the direction of Mark Martufi, and concert choir seniors, under the direction of Paige Hardison, led the audience in the “Star Spangled Banner.” Student Council Co-Presidents Sophia DeFranco and James Lunetta also led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Treats for Troops In the Merrick School District, Chatterton Elementary School third-graders of Lindsay Struss’ class collected and organized candy for United States Troops through Operation Gratitude. Ms. Struss’ class collected and packaged an
array of candy including Snickers, Milky Way and Skittles to send to service men and women. In addition, students included handwritten letters thanking Troops for their dedication and service in each package. Operation Gratitude is
a non-profit organization that seeks to lift the spirits and evolving needs of United States Troops and gives Americans the opportunity to thank all those who serve our nation.

Meaningful Career Each year, the National Business Education Association designates November as National Business Education Week. In order to help students effectively prepare for a meaningful and purposeful career, Wantagh High School set aside one full week to enrich the business curriculum with workshops and lectures from college professors and business professionals. “Business Education Week provides insight into authentic, real-world topics which connect the classroom to the business world, all in an endeavor to better prepare our students for college and beyond,” said Pat Calosso, supervisor of business education and
foreign language. Introduction to business students heard presentations about conducting business in China and making wise decisions when selecting a college. In addition, business law students heard a presentation about a career as an attorney, and college-level accounting students discussed moral and ethical decisions in business and life, as well as effective public speaking strategies. There was also a keyboard challenge for the fastest and most accurate typist. Caren Strause’s accounting students also had to think collaboratively, creatively and critically as they
worked in teams to build a five-foot tower sturdy enough to withstand a moderate breeze. Each team was given four paper cups, six straws, four plates, scissors, three sheets of easel paper and three feet of masking tape to build the tower. They were allowed 12 minutes to plan their design and eight minutes to build the tower. After the task was completed, the students filled out an assessment, explaining how they could have improved with planning and design strategies. “The real-life skills you used today will serve you MEANINGFUL CAREER - Wantagh accounting students participated in a towerwell in business,” Ms. Calosso told the building activity to learn collaboration skills important to business.
