My No Column, Column “Shoulda, coulda, and woulda won’t get it done. In attacking adversity, only a positive attitude, alertness, and regrouping to basics can launch a comeback.” - Pat Riley Yes, you read that right. This is my no column, column. This morning I bounced into work, beaming with pride as I declared to my co-workers that my editorial work was “ahead of schedule.” This day would be a cakewalk. News done - check; covers done - check; calendar complete - check; entertainment feature laid out - major check! Just one last minor detail... what’s that thing I need to do again? I drummed my fingers on the desk and then jumped to attention with a start. My column!! My weekly dose of shared inspiration slid off this week’s buffet table like an off balance gravy boat. “Okay, Allison, think of something perfectly genius... crickets... any second now...” Wait. Something’s coming. “I could really use a snickers bar.” “Great! That’s the deepest
thought you can drum up today? Nice work kid!” Cue the “Meh” emoji. Suddenly a humorously vintage thought drifted through my mind; a Seinfeld reference. Jerry Seinfeld’s fictional pitch to NBC executives: “It’s a show about nothing (sorry for the obscure reference, millennials).” If it’s good enough for Seinfeld? So here is my column about nothing, or rather a very big something. The elephant in the room, if you will. That something I am referring to is the moments in life that are so significant that you’re at a loss for words and you realize how limiting the English language can be. Sometimes it simply fails you. Well, that’s been my week. In short, I’m processing, people. Raise your hand if you have ever been in an intensely emotional conversation with someone significant in your life, and you are feeling so much in that moment that you cannot open your mouth to utter a single meaningful word. The other party searches your eyes, trying
to decode your thoughts through osmosis as your innards scream out a million different things that your mouth won’t or can’t. I often think of my mind as a rubberband. I stretch it and stretch it, and tap it dry like a maple tree being squeezed of its last droplet of sap (sorry for mixing analogies), and sometimes it begs for a bit of slack; a week off to put its feet up, have a beer (or in my case, chocolate) and watch some reality TV. High brow stuff like HGTV’s House Hunters, not Jersey Shore. My rogue mind doesn’t go totally off the rails, thank you. Oh, and a massage would be nice too. So who am I to deny it that right? I would say its acting like a diva, but that would sound judgy. Okay mind, you can chillax this week. After all, it’s almost Thanksgiving, which is almost the holidays, which is really almost vacation, right? Sounds good to me! Let me know when you’ve given yourself permission slips in your own life to let it all go for a bit.

A Tribute and Interview with Late Comic Book Icon Stan Lee By Allison Kugel
In the winter of 2006, I was granted the opportunity to interview the iconic comic book writer and creator of some of the most celebrated fictional characters in our popular culture, Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber). I must admit that at the time, I was not entirely familiar with his work, although I was aware that his imagination was a national treasure and that if not for him, there would be no Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men, or a plethora of other famous superheroes. Motherhood was still a solid three years away, so my son wasn’t yet around to school me on the mythical status of Stan Lee. Suffice to say, I was still excited for the interview. Upon the start of my conversation with Stan Lee, I was instantly at ease and we felt familiar with one another, like two old friends. Perhaps our shared Jewish heritage didn’t hurt (there is a definite cultural shorthand). The man, himself, was warm, friendly and so willing to share detailed musings about his life.

We spoke about his childhood fondness for movies and movie stars of his early days, how his teachers encouraged his writing ability when he was a boy, and his early break
getting hired to be an assistant at a magazine and comic book company. The conversation steadily built towards his memory of thinking up the character of Spider-Man, which really set his career into the stratosphere. It is with all of this in mind that I share some of my favorite moments from my interview with the late, great Stan Lee. Allison Kugel: Tell me about the Stan Lee creative process. What is your routine or pattern for coming up with a new character and writing a story? And are you more successful when you designate a time to sit down and write, or is it better when it just comes to you as you’re doing something else? Stan Lee: To tell you the truth, I think I’m probably the quintessential hack writer. I don’t get inspirations as such. And when I don’t have something to write, I’m not thinking about it at all. But, I’m sort of a pressure writer. If somebody says, “Stan, write something,” and I have to have it by tomorrow morning, I’ll just sit down and I’ll write it. It always seems to come to me. But I’m better doing a rushed job because if it isn’t something that’s due quickly, I won’t
work on it until it becomes almost an emergency. Allison Kugel: I’m going to test your memory here. Do you happen to remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you thought up the idea for Spider-Man? Stan Lee: I had already done The Fantastic Four and I had done, I believe it was The Hulk, and they were doing pretty well. My publisher said, “How about dreaming up another superhero?” So I said, “Okay.” I was sitting at my desk trying to think of one, and I saw a fly crawling on a wall. I said “Gee, wouldn’t it be cool if I could get a hero who could crawl on walls like an insect?” But I think I’m not telling you the truth, because I couldn’t have said, “Wouldn’t it be cool,” because that word wasn’t in common usage back then. So I probably said, “Wouldn’t it be groovy?” You see, when you do a new superhero the biggest problem in the beginning is what super power do you give him? They’ve all been taken! (Laughs) But the idea of somebody who could stick to walls like an insect, I thought that was original. So then I needed a name for him. I figured, how about Insect-Man? And that didn’t sound dramatic. Mosquito-Man? Nah. I went down the list. And when I got to Spider-Man, somehow it sounded dramatic. Spider-Man! So, I had my name. Because he was called SpiderMan… I was working with an artist, Steve Ditko, and we decided, hey why shouldn’t he shoot webs also?! That’s how it happened. Allison Kugel: So then you described exactly what you saw in your mind’s eye and he drew it? Stan Lee: First I gave it to Jack Kirby to do, but Jack always drew these very heroic characters, like Captain America. I said to him, “You know Jack, I want this fellow Peter Parker, I want him to be just an average teenager. Don’t let him look like your typical muscular superhero.” I guess Jack was so used to drawing those kinds of people, that after he drew a page or two I looked at it and I said, “No, that’s not right.” So I said, “Forget it Jack. I’ll give it to another artist.” And Jack didn’t care; he had a lot of other things to do, and we didn’t realize this was going to become such a big script. So I gave it to Steve Ditko, who tended to draw things a little more realistically and more down to earth. And he did it, and I really don’t interfere much in what the costume will look like. Steve pretty much invented the [SpiderMan] costume, himself.
Allison Kugel: You make cameo appearances in all of the films that feature your famous characters. How did that tradition start? Stan Lee: I think it started with Spider-Man. No, actually it started with the X-Men. It was in the first X-Men movie. There was this scene on the beach, and they had me selling hot dogs in the background while something went on. You only saw me on the screen for a couple of seconds. But being the perfectionist that I am, I kept saying to the director, Bryan Singer, “What is my motivation? Should this hot dog that I’m trying to sell have mustard and sauerkraut?” (He breaks up laughing) …. Allison Kugel: (Laughs) Is it kosher?

Stan Lee: “With great power comes great responsibility.” (From SpiderMan) And then there was another one… I think it was a Silver Surfer story, where somebody is talking about the most powerful person in the world. The Silver Surfer says, “There is only one who is all powerful, and his greatest weapon is love.” I wrote
Stan Lee: “Is it rare?” I mean, I really care about these things (Laughs).

Allison Kugel: You’ve talked about how you like for the characters that you write, or the superheroes that you’ve created, to be just as flawed as they are powerful.

Stan Lee: I think if they’re not flawed, they become incredibly uninteresting, because they become one dimensional. If the character can do no wrong and is perfect in every way, he is not a terribly interesting character. I’ve always tried to make the characters I’ve written as realistic as possible, and then just give them one attribute that makes them incredibly colorful so that you want to read about them. But beyond that attribute, they should be as realistic and empathetic as possible. Allison Kugel: Do you think that being a powerful person makes somebody more vulnerable in some ways? Stan Lee: No. Not unless the writer inserts it. As an example, Superman never had that vulnerability. And I think it’s one of the reasons that Spider-Man almost always outsold Superman. It was a little difficult to worry about Superman when you were reading the stories, because you knew nothing could hurt him. And that’s why they finally had to invent Krypton later on. The writers realized what a problem it was to get any reader to really feel there’s any suspense to the stories. So, it’s not that when you’re powerful you have to have vulnerability. It’s that if you’re writing about a character, if he’s a powerful character, unless you give him vulnerability I don’t think he’ll be as interesting to the reader. Allison Kugel: Can you give me one
it word for word. And when I used to would always bring that up and say they were very impressed by it. Love, or a good feeling toward your fellow man, I think will accomplish more than anything else. Certainly more than hatred or violence or anything of that sort.”

She sat on many committees for North Bellmore and the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District including one that developed the elementary district’s mission statement and core values. Her three daughters, Meghan, Kristen and Erin, attended Newbridge Road Elementary School, Grand Avenue Middle School and Mepham High School. Ms. Corless held PTA leadership positions at all three schools including her recently completed service as president of the Mepham PTA. Additional community service includes work with the
Girl Scouts, Kiwanis Club, games for the physically challenged and Last Hope animal shelter. She has worked as a pediatric nurse for 36 years and is currently an oncology pediatric nurse practitioner. “Ms. Corless has an impressive resume of service to the North Bellmore community and we welcome her to the board of education,” Board of Education President Melissa Cmar-Grote said. “On behalf of myself and the entire board, I wish to express our appreciation to all of the community members who applied for the vacant position. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers. The Book Fairies does more than just impact their local community; they are also dedicated to supporting literacy programs in underdeveloped nations around the world. Some of the books they receive that are in fair to average condition are packaged for partnering organizations to be shipped overseas! Since the program’s inception, they have helped build libraries in Africa, India, China, South America and the Caribbean Islands!
If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! In 1992, John Theissen founded JTCF, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. John held a toy drive that year during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During the first toy drive he collected over eight hundred new toys in just two weeks and he brought them to three different hospitals. That was the beginning of what has become a yearround organization. Since 1992, JTCF has collected over one million new toys and has donated them to sick and underprivileged children in hospitals and child-care facilities. This organization has also donated therapeutic and recreational equipment and has also been able to help families with medical expenses! Spreading Smiles Through Letters

Richard Schwartz’s fifth grade class at Abbey Lane Elementary School wanted to give back in a big way, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. What started out as a small idea quickly sparked into something even more significant. Students decided to write letters to those affected by breast cancer during the month of October. They named their letter writing campaign “The Schwartzville Project,” and by the end of the month, hit their goal of writing 100 letters to people not just in the United States, but also to England and Ireland. Schwartz’s class hosted a pink bagel breakfast on October 30th to honor some of the letter recipients. Dressed in light pink T-shirts, the students handed out roses to approximately 20 breast cancer survivors and those affected by the disease who attended the event. The breakfast allowed some of the students to meet the person they wrote
their letters to. Letters were displayed around the school gymnasium and the space was decorated with pink balloons and Breast Cancer Awareness ribbons. Principal Dr. George Maurer opened the event by welcoming the honorary guests and their loved ones. “With the project that you are about to see, we are teaching kids things that are so important and so needed in our world today; compassion, kindness and empathy,” he said. “We are so proud of our students and Mr. Schwartz because under his direction, a very small seed of an idea has really blossomed into a very special project.” Schwartz presented a video that the students created which highlighted the breast cancer research that the class conducted while they wrote their letters. Attendees were invited to enjoy pink bagels, baked goods, pink lemonade and coffee during the event as they walked around with their letter writer. Many of the
survivors were touched by the students’ words and gracious hearts. “It is an amazing program that they are doing,” said breast cancer survivor and Abbey Lane graduate Karen Guerra, who received a letter from fifth-grader Kelsey Defreitas. “Kelsey’s letter makes me feel so very special and I think it’s great that they are learning about this.” The class is hoping that “The Schwartzville Project” will expand into other classrooms and schools to help bring a smile to those affected by breast cancer. “We want everyone to do it because breast cancer awareness is really important. Wantagh’s Prestigious Art Exhibit The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that the artwork of high school students Keiran Douglas, Cristina Paier, Caitlyn Parisi, Lauren Salerno and Athena Yao has been selected for inclusion in the 2018 Nassau County High School Student Juried
Exhibit at The Art Guild at Elderfields in Manhasset. To enter, students presented an original 2D or 3D work created within the past two years and mediums including acrylic, oil, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, digital art, collage, etching/prints or sculpture with pedestal.
The students’ works will be exhibited from Nov. 3–25 and a reception for students and their families will follow. The district congratulates the students on their outstanding artistic achievements.

Attitude of Gratitude For the month of November, fourth-grade students in Alexandra Grodin’s class at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore have adopted an attitude of gratitude. Each day, the students
reflect on what they are grateful for and why and write it down in their personal Gratitude Journals. The journals are to be shared with the students’ families during their Thanksgiving meals.
“This is a really great opportunity for the students to be mindful and to take the time to reflect on what is important,” Ms. Grodin said. “They are really enjoying the activity.”

The boy who never wanted to grow up was front and center on the Massapequa High School stage during evening productions of “Peter Pan” on Nov. 2 and 3. The drama, based off of the early-1900s story by J.M. Barrie, featured a cast of 21 students from the high school’s main and Ames campuses. Senior Bridget Rogers played the title role. She is a veteran of the Massapequa stage, having been in school productions at Lockhart Elementary School, Berner Middle School and the high
school. Other lead roles included seniors Jojo Icart as Captain Hook, Molly Guarton as Smee, Alissa Popeck as Wendy and Jack Graziano as Mr. Darling, and junior Josie Giorgio as Mrs. Darling. The director was Kristina Sumakis and the production assistant was Michael LaBella. Auditions were held in June and roles were cast soon after, giving the actors the summer to learn lines before rehearsals began in early September. Jojo, who is in his sixth high school production, said that “Peter Pan” is a
well-known show that has withstood the test of time. “I think this play is magical in so many senses,” he said. “It’s cool to see that a story that is so old carries so well today.” Alissa, in her third high school production, said getting ready for the show has been a team effort. She noted the hard work of the actors, directors, costume and set designers, and lighting and sound crew. In no hurry to grow up, Alissa said doing “Peter Pan” during her senior year was fitting.

Essential Functions: • Respond to requests for technical assistance by telephone and other channels. • Provide technical expertise to security professionals in the areas of installation, troubleshooting, upgrade and optimization of security hardware and software products. • Determine the best solution for each inquiry, issue or request by applying and / or adapting existing knowledge and best practices. • Utilize existing support tools, techniques and methodology. • Participate in the capture of new knowledge and solutions. • Document and track each customer interaction from initial contact through closure. Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required. Long Island Volunteers Volunteers from PSEG Long Island’s Employee Business Resource Group (EBRG), The Alliance, recently hosted its monthly “Pasta Saturday” at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Wyandanch. Every fifth Saturday since 2016, the Alliance group sets up, prepares and serves approximately 100 local residents and families to supplement the Mercy Inn Soup Kitchen, which feeds people Monday through Friday. “We do it all, from food donations to clean up,” said Renee Crespi, PSEG
Long Island employee and member of (title) The Alliance. “We also pack ‘to-go’ meals for each guest to take with them.” “There’s no better feeling than giving back to the communities where we live and work,” said Gregory Nichols, president PSEG Long Island’s The Alliance. “We’ve been doing this for a number of years, so you get to know many of the people who attend the dinner. The Wantagh School District has filled two administrative positions with talented faculty, effective November 5th. Nick Pappas, a Manhasset resident, will now serve as assistant principal at Wantagh High School. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Pappas served as district mentor for probationary teachers in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, where he led teacher workshops in lesson plan design, data analysis, questioning techniques, the use of formative assessments and mindfulness practices. Since 2004, he has taught Advanced Placement
biology, advanced science research and sciencerelated courses at Sanford H. Calhoun High School. Mr. Pappas holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston College’s Honors Program in the College of Arts and Sciences, a master’s degree in science education from New York University and School Building Leader and School District Leader advanced certification from The College of Saint Rose. Julie Beth Rosslee, a Dix Hills resident, now serves as secondary director of English Language Arts, Reading and Libraries. She recently taught English at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District.
