Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless.
There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.
Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Please email licvolunteer@licares.org for more information. Additionally, food donations are always welcome. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. East Meadow High School and the surrounding community celebrated homecoming with a celebratory parade and football game against Calhoun High School. Starting from Veteran’s Memorial Park and led by the East Meadow High School marching band, school administrators, board members, faculty and students marched through the neighborhood to the high school. The theme for this year’s floats was “video games.” The freshman class built a Donkey Kong float, sophomores went back in time with Pac-Man, juniors chose an ode to Sonic the Hedgehog and the senior class created life-size Mario Party characters. While students riding on the floats threw treats to those supporting them, members of the homecoming court
were escorted throughout the parade, followed by the high school’s cheerleading and kickline teams. Before the game began, senior football players were recognized and given flowers as a recognition for their final homecoming. As game time approached, the high school marching band took their seats in the crowd. Among them were middle school band students who were participating in a Music Mentor program. This program allows Woodland Middle School students the opportunity to understand what it means to be a high school band member. After a patriotic rendition of the national anthem sung by the Senior Chorale, the Jets ran onto the field and the game was underway. The Jets went into halftime with a big
lead over Calhoun. After performances by the kickline team, cheerleaders and the marching band, halftime celebrations concluded with the crowning of the homecoming king Chris Wade and queen Jenna Balsamo. The district congratulates the rest of the homecoming court: Matt Parise, Zoya Cheema, Dani Sebastian, Melanie Marien, Syed Shah, Sarena Sahadeo, Daniel Tellerman and Emily Stea. The East Meadow Jets celebrated a victory over Calhoun, with a final score of 45-10. The pride was undeniable and the district thanks all supporters, fellow students and administrators for showing their support at the homecoming parade and game.

LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Wantagh High School freshmen abandoned their classrooms for the day to participate in the second annual Freshman Field Day. Out on the field and tennis courts, the ninth graders cycled through eight team-building activities including Hang the Laundry, All Dressed Up, Find Your Footwear,
Hula Your Hoop and more. Also included was a mindfulness activity hosted by Andrew Ahr of Body and Brain. Upperclassmen volunteered to run the activities and motivate participants. High school social worker Iris Kline explained, “The purpose of the day was to build a sense of connectedness
and camaraderie among the freshmen class as they begin their high school journey.” At the completion of the activities, the freshmen were provided a lunch of pizza, provided by the Wantagh 6-12 Association, and ice cream, provided by Wantagh United Teachers.
