Zhenghong Li, M.D left., a third year resident in Internal Medicine presented two posters with Dr. Marianne Frieri, chief of allergy and immunology at NUMC’s department of medicine. State Conference Presentation Expectations for APPR, leadership in special education and college preparation for students with moderate disabilities were just some of the topics presented by leaders in the Nassau BOCES Special Education department at the Council for Exceptional Children’s New York Conference. The council is widely considered the gold standard of special education groups at both the state and national level.
“Education Improvement for ALL” was the theme for this year’s conference that brought together a wide audience of administrators, educators and parents. Nassau BOCES, in collaboration with local universities and educational agencies, presented resources and solutions for navigating the education system for special education students. Presenters included Karen Ellis, Executive Director; Dr. Joan
Dituri, Assistant Director; Dr. Carmine Scerra, Assistant Director; and Dr. Linda Lopez, Psychologist. The presentations, listed below, covered three current issues in the field. Living With APPR And Making Data Meaningful How to collect and analyze growth rate data for students with disabilities as participants learn about APPR and expectations for typical growth for students with disabilities, and the Nassau BOCES STAR database project. Leading For Success In Special Education Contexts Special education policy ensures free and appropriate education in a least restrictive environment for students with disabilities.
Practice, however, often marginalizes them. The presenters discussed the systemic improvement in a local district and reported on improvements in Special Education leadership. High School/College Partnership To Prepare Students With Moderate Disabilities For College High school/college partnerships improve the comfort level and preparedness for college for Regents-bound students with moderate disabilities at Nassau BOCES. Participants learned about meaningful and relevant learning activities that have been developed to expose students to the demands of applying to and attending college.
Progressive Times It’s never too early to begin pursuing a career in Journalism, and at the Progressive School of Long Island, located at 1425 Merrick Avenue in Merrick, the students participating in the weekly newspaper club are doing just that. The staff of the Progressive Times meets every Monday after school for an hour, spending about half that time brainstorming new ideas for the next issue and the other half working on their writing skills. Students are permitted to use one of two computer stations in the classroom, and are encouraged to bring their own laptops if they choose to. Advised by teacher

L e v i t t o w n administrators, staff and students took a onemile trek through the neighborhood during the district’s 28th Annual Levittown Educators Against Destructive Decisions Walk and Community Fair on October 27th. This muchanticipated event was the culmination of a week of school assemblies that highlighted ways for students to live healthy lives and make decisions that result in positive outcomes. School and John Lewis from MacArthur High School accompanied Grand Marshal Nina Glenn, a social worker at Wisdom Lane Middle School. Also in attendance were members of the Board of Education and local representatives who marched to the accompaniment of the Salk Middle School band and school representatives outfitted with colorful banners. After the parade, participants met in the Levittown Memorial Education Center gymnasium to hear speeches and introductions. Superintendent of Schools
Dr. James J. Grossane welcomed the community and thanked residents for their support of the district. “It’s great to see that parents and the community are so willing to support students in making good decisions for themselves,” he said. Informational booths and games were set up along the perimeter of the gym. The community was also treated to a performance of the upcoming MacArthur High School play, Les Misérables, and a number of routines by the Division Avenue High School cheer team.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT - Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes commends Sean Murphy of Bethpage on the fine job he is doing on his Eagle Scout Project at the First Presbyterian Church located on Wantagh Avenue in Levittown. His Eagle Scout Project includes the making of a memorial patio with seats, new landscaping and canopy, which was dedicated in loving memory of the members of the First Presbyterian Church who have passed away.
(NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated
regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also,

Calling All Readers: Input Welcome! In school, I am taking a class called Sociology. For this class, we have been instructed to do a research project. My topic for this project is how the media influences children into engaging in deviant behavior. For this project, I am employing many methods of gathering my data. Students in today’s world are faced with obstacles each and every day. America’s youth is pressured into conforming to society due to the increased prevalence of negative influences depicted in the media. Bad habits are developed as a result of repeated exposure to the products
that companies try to push to children. Via the media, messages of cigarettes, alcohol and other deviant behavior are justified. Because students see their favorite athletes using a product on the TV screen or a celebrity endorsing a certain brand, they will be pushed into buying that item. If companies tell children that “all the cool kids are doing it,” they are going to lead the kids down the wrong path. There are many methods that a company can use in seducing the consumer. The way we display a product to our youth has a direct impact on the way that they utilize it. For instance, the way the
media highlights alcohol, cigarettes and size zero clothing prods kids into purchasing them. If the media displays a product in a positive light, our youth will view the product in a positive light. Inversely, if a good is depicted negatively, a child will not be as likely to pick up that product. The problem is, the media portrays the worst of items in the best of ways. Mutual Inspiration

What to write… It’s funny, as you go through daily life, there are so many topics that seem worthy of a column; yet, when I actually sit down to write my weekly contribution to this newspaper, I am often at a loss for words. I recently received a letter from a supportive reader saying, in part, that he was writing “to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” True enough. I must admit, when I first became interested in the field of Journalism, it was mainly due to the fact that I saw it as a wonderful cross-section of all those topics which interested me – English, History, perhaps some Political Science, Photography… really, the possibilities were endless. As elementary writing assignments
turned to full-fledged papers in middle school, followed by “true” journalistic work on my high school newspaper, I was sold on the career choice. This passion for the field only increased throughout college, as I was afforded the opportunity to explore various genres ranging from hard-hitting investigative pieces to in-depth features and profiles to the more subjective movie/music review. And then there was my senior Honors Tutorial and Thesis, a 50-page dissertation on the effects of September 11th on Journalism as a whole, for better or for worse. I had hopes of eventually expanding upon this mini-novel to broaden its scope into a book of sorts; but as time passed and the immediacy of the moment escaped our collective grasp, it seemed that hindsight would change the entire course of my research. And so it remained, 50 pages of reflection, compiled
between the Spring and Fall of 2003, preserved in hardcover. Fast forward to my job here, where I am fortunate to have the privilege to write this column weekly, and the freedom to choose my topics. Over 400 bylines later, there are times when choosing new material is difficult. Sure, there are plenty of sources – just an average day-in-thelife could probably generate a dozen or so possibilities – but not all inspirations should necessarily be captured in writing. Some are better left to the imagination, where they may one day flourish into more improved, developed ideas. In any case, the fact that I inspire anyone is truly appreciated. When you have a passion for your career, the hope is always that this comes through to others. Whether for an “A” in school, or a fan letter from a stranger…

The walls outside the art classrooms at Wantagh Middle School were the canvas for an important message of thanks to active servicemen and retired veterans, as students in grades six through eight created a thank-you mural in honor of Veterans Day. Under the direction of art teachers Jaclyn Gentilesco, Krista Hagan and Athanasia Karaiskos, the students used printmaking and collage techniques to
create scrapbook pages of family servicemen, veteran photos and patriotic symbols. The pages, along with individual haiku poems expressing appreciation, were placed on the wall to form a mural. Student Joseph Streib, whose uncle served in Korea, explained the importance of this project. “The mural represents how veterans protected our country and allowed us to
live free,” he said. Fellow student Kaitlin Steingruebner paid homage to five family members who served in the U.S. Army and Marine Corps by designing three collages. “This has been a day for me to thank my relatives who served and to think about what they must have felt during their service to this country,” she said.

Conference Day Faculty and staff throughout the East Meadow School District gathered at their respective schools on November 5th for Superintendent’s Conference Day. The workshop topic discussed in each of the buildings was “The Nature of Learning.” Using the text “Enhancing Professional Practice: A Framework for Teaching” by Charlotte Danielson as a point of reference, faculty explored
the types of teaching skills required at higher levels of performance through discussion of planning and practice, and considered how levels of practice align with the Common Core Learning Standards. While paired in groups, teachers participated in various exercises, including listing the attributes they felt are characteristic of a quality teacher and quality instruction. Principals and staff also
discussed top priorities for teaching in the classroom, including designing instruction to allow students to build upon their knowledge and understanding of material. They also discussed the importance of engaging students with challenging learning activities that require them to think deeply and apply what they’ve learned.
During lunch, Wantagh High School students took a step toward being more inclusive and connecting with someone new through participation in national Mix It Up Day. Upperclassmen and members of art, sports and leadership clubs hosted the event to provide a venue whereby students were encouraged to leave their comfort zone and mingle with new acquaintances. when students leave their cliques and interact with different acquaintances, biases and misperceptions often decrease. Adviser Heather Romano explained that the goal of the activity was to take the students out of their usual groups and encourage them to mingle. “We wanted to provide the students with a larger scope of the school and get them out of their comfort zones,” she said. As the younger students entered the brightly decorated cafeteria, they were given a lollipop to correspond with the
color of a predetermined table. Upon being seated, same-aged students and upperclassmen joined the table and facilitated a conversation with talking points. Ms. Romano said after about five minutes, it was obvious that everyone started to relax. Freshman Nick Bricca said he started to feel less intimidated as he engaged in a conversation with the older students. Senior Lucas Neroda felt the event worked. “Everyone is talking to people they would not have talked to before,” he said.
The district congratulates Division Avenue’s Kristin Aquila and Mallory Kundert on receiving All-County honors, and Brianna DeMilia on earning AllClass honors, for girls varsity volleyball. Kristin, Mallory and Brianna led the Dragons
to an undefeated regular season and first-place finish in Conference A3. Kristin had 66 aces, 106 kills, four assists, six blocks and 15 digs, while Mallory had 42 aces, three kills, five assists and 66 digs, and Brianna had 47 aces, two kills, 125 assists, seven digs and nine pushes for points.
