He had a lit candle on a meter stick, and he brought the candle to the can, which caused the

Mattes also discussed indicators with the students, and he stressed that labeling beakers and other items in the lab is vital to ensure safety, as is wearing protective goggles. “He was able to demonstrate the difference between physical and chemical changes in matter for the students to understand,” McHale said. “This will help us as we move forward with our lesson.”

Well there it is. I hope you enjoyed autumn. Did you savor the glorious foliage on your drive to work? Did you pick enough apples and pumpkins to last you through your winter hibernation? Did you take in the requisite corn mazes and haunted houses and eat far too much Halloween candy in the process? Like it or not, once those leaves begin to brown and flutter to the ground en masse, autumn is officially past its peak. Forecasters are already beginning

to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something? As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. The shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking can wait a bit. There will be plenty of time for all that over the next

month or so. And then… well, then it’s just plain old winter. Slow down. Savor. Repeat for next season. It’s not that difficult. Perhaps if everyone wasn’t in such a great rush, there would be more time to accomplish things. Mindset is everything. In the meantime, enjoy the cool, crisp autumn air as you rake your leaves and plan the Thanksgiving menu for next week. Be thankful we have four seasons to enjoy, and be thankful for all those whom you are blessed to share them with.

ISLAND SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY

Fourth graders at Abbey Lane Elementary School in Levittown were immersed in lessons about traditional Native American culture during a two-day program called Journeys Into American Indian Territory, a traveling museum featuring Native American educators Unaian Bruno and Maddi Cheers, who discussed the culture and customs of the Eastern Woodland native people.

Bruno and Cheers taught the students about traditional culture, survival, clothing, customs and government, in addition to showing them artifacts which included a lacrosse stick, clothes made out of animal skins, musical instruments and the replica of a longhouse. The students then attended the second half of the workshop about Native American games, including

the ring and pin game and the bowl dice game. “These games were designed to teach Native American children handeye coordination and to learn skills to hunt,” Bruno told the students. Tying into the fourthgrade curriculum in New York studies, students have been learning about the Native Americans of the local area.

Wisdom Lane Middle School students attended a character education assembly with presenter and retired police officer/ actor Paul D. Failla. Drawing on real life experiences and historic events, Failla utilized humor, drama and roleplaying to engage the students in the exploration of topics, including destructive decisions, diversity, dignity and respect, values, leadership,

profiling, racism and ridicule. “Mental strength is more important than anything,” Failla told the students. Tying into the district’s annual Levittown Education Against Destructive Decisions Week, Failla told the students that they are entitled to a fear-free and substance-free education. He also explained that everyone has one shot to make a first impression

and that speaking to adults with respect is essential. In addition, he encouraged the audience to walk away from confrontation and temptation to take illegal substances. During an emotional section of the program, Failla showed the students a photo of his deceased father, thus encouraging each of them to go home and tell their parents how much they are loved.

Health Workshop Held More than 200 school nurses from across Nassau County gathered at Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center on November 4th for an important health workshop hosted by the Bellmore School District. The event, which was cosponsored by the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents, featured keynote speaker Dr. Lawrence E. Eisenstein, the commissioner of health for the Nassau County Department of Health. The workshop provided Nassau’s school nurses with important information on communicable diseases, including enterovirus D68 and other general concerns, such as ways to prevent the spread of the common cold. The health care professionals were also provided with information on available resources, including a 24-hour hotline, how to properly communicate important health information to their school community and the importance of teaching students proper hygiene practices in order to prevent the spread of illness. Dr. Eisenstein also opened the floor for the nurses to ask questions and share any concerns they may have.

The focus of the essay contest was to highlight a notable contributor of Italian heritage. An avid swimmer herself, Woodiwiss was inspired to write about Biondi’s accomplishments as an Italian-American competitive swimmer. The Italian Heritage and Culture Month Committee and the Italian Teachers’ Association Chapter of

The Levittown School District congratulates the Division Avenue High School marching band on a successful performance of its show, The Immortal Beloved, at the New York State Band Championships on October 26th at Syracuse University. Under the direction of Michael Bastone, the band placed fifth in its class with the highest score of the past five years, or 77.60. Student Drum Majors Anthony

Fifth In NYS Montoya and Jason Tiemer, along with Color Guard captains, Dimitra Tzanis and Izhaine Troche led the band through an outstanding season. Field majors, Kara Burke and Jaymee Dietz, and section leaders Brendan Skillman (woodwind captain), Karla Zabala (brass captain), Jillian Power (drumline captain) and Olivia Kavanaugh (front ensemble captain), as well as the supportive

band parents, all played vital roles in the marching band’s success. Principal Joan Lorelli, Curriculum Associate for Music Vincent D’Ulisse and Bastone are extremely proud of the marching band and applaud the musicianship and choreography that has hallmarked an awardwinning competition season.

The program was a great success with the fundraiser collecting more than $1,800. During the evening, the junior varsity and varsity volleyball teams competed against the high school staff.
