As part of the Activism Club’s goals at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, members raise awareness of social issues and connect students with community-based initiatives. With this in mind, a member recently reached out to Calhoun alumnus Jerry Greenfield to participate in a Q&A session about activism efforts on a national and even global scale. Greenfield and his partner Ben Cohen, both Class of 1969 Calhoun graduates, started an ice cream store in 1978 with limited experience and grew it into a successful global company, Ben & Jerry’s. “The brand has been involved with many important causes over the years,” explained Erin Mormando, the club’s faculty adviser. Students questioned Greenfield about maintaining profitability while supporting such historical movements. “We had no idea was socially responsible business was or activism was,” Greenfield explained. “It was something that

Long Island based nonprofits will compete against each other in 5 categories, with the winner in each category winning a $5,000 grant! The Imagine Awards not only provides a $5,000 check to
the winner in each category, it provides a professionally developed video to each finalist, it also provides an avenue to collaborate and explore, exposure and recognition to the finalists and the sector, and a night where the light is shine in on the
sector to spotlight all the amazing things that are happening in the nonprofit community. Imagine Awards participants have developed new partnerships and collaborations, made corporate connectios, which has resulted
in new board members and contributions, hve gained strategic insight into what other organizations are doing, and have developed new friendships a n d relationships that have p r o v e n essential in the growth and development of their organizations. There’s still time for your nonprofit to apply! To be eligible, the organization or executive must meet all of the following requirements: 1) Recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization.

Return of the Rams The W.T. Clarke High School Rams Marching Band in the East Meadow School District came together for a marching band clinic on Oct. 24. The band assembled safely outdoors, adhering to the New York State
Department of Health’s social distancing guidelines. Studentmusicians from both inperson cohorts, as well as fully remote students, were invited to participate and work with special guest clinician, Dave Abrams.
Activities included section color wars, fundamentals of marching and drill formations. The event culminated with a choreographed performance that showcased the hard work of the students and teachers.

LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY HOSPITAL HEROES WEEK - Long Island Community Hospital recently celebrated Heroes Week recognizing all of their healthcare heroes who stood strong against COVID-19, for the protection of our community. As part of the week-long celebration, gift bags including a commemorative medal and a long sleeve T-Shirts were distributed to the entire staff. One military member who received help from this organizaiton mentioned the following, “For someone in the military like me, it’s hard to swallow my pride and ask for help. This was a safe environment to open up in. New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations Amid Pandemic Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYorkPresbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New York Blood Center (NYBC) to
increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty surrounding the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this
winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,

centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation of the way people donate blood has
changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking
out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a
blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage long-term. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”
