Isabella Aletrakis of the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD, who is studying dance at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), was recently named a Scholar-Artist by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday. She earned the honor for excellence as a practicing dance student and for superior academic achievement. Bethpage Turkey Drive To Benefit Island Harvest Food Bank Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 11th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Friday, November 22, 2019, from 7 AM to 6:00 PM. The New York Jets will also support this year’s Turkey Drive and will have a Jets Football Legend on hand to help collect donated goods. Donations can be dropped off at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards, or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will then help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Those dropping off food can use the drivethrough donation lane for convenience, and Bethpage volunteers will carry your

Brother Missing In Action For 75 Years, Finally Laid To Rest A favorite WWII Veteran and a September 2016 HFLI alumni, Thomas McTigue is having a wake for his WWII Veteran Brother John F. McTigue on Sunday, November 17th. A ceremony, with a gun salute and full military honors is planned on Monday, November 18th. An Air Force fly over is expected. John and some of his B-17 crew mates had been missing since their aircraft was last seen on August 24, 1944 so for over 75 years, Tom McTigue was left wondering if his family would ever have closure over the loss of his brother. Twenty months ago the
Department of Defense informed Tom that an unmarked grave with several bodies in it was discovered near the crash site of his brother’s bomber and about a month or so ago, his remains were positively identified. Our Honor Flight Long Island friends are invited to attend this great tribute and send off for our Long Island Hero John F. McTigue, lost but now he’s found. Celebrating Our WWII And Korean War Heroes

Honor Flight Long Island will hold a reunion November 23rd at the American Airpower Museum, to celebrate our WWII and Korean War Heroes who took a free flight to Washington, D.C. on September 21, 2019 for a one-day guided tour of their military memorials. They returned that evening at Islip MacArthur Airport to a raucous welcome by Nassau County Firefighter’s Pipes & Drums Band and to thunderous applause from hundreds of family and friends! Honor Flight Long Island (HFLI) is our local, nonprofit chapter of the national Honor Flight Network. HFLI organizes, hosts and pays for the flights to Washington, D.C. each spring and fall. As part of the day’s
events, Veterans and their Guardians fly to BaltimoreWashington International Airport, where a motor coach takes them to D.C. for the guided tour of WWII, Korean War and other military memorials. Each trip includes 50 Veterans who go for free, thanks to donations from across Long Island. They are accompanied by 50 Guardians, next generation, able-bodied volunteers who donate $400 (tax deductible) to offset the day’s costs. If there is no family member to act as a Guardian, HFLI has a roster of volunteers ready to step up for the privilege and donate the suggested fee. HFLI is now accepting applications for future flights from WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War Veterans. To apply for spots on 2020

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is n e e d e d , sponsor programs that p r o m o t e self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
There are many ways that individuals just like you can get involved with Long Island Cares. You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Please email licvolunteer@ licares.org for more information. Additionally, they are holding their annual Adopt-a-Family Thanksgiving Food Drive! This project involves others to volunteer their time to gather and bag items for families in need so they can have a filling Thanksgiving. This is the perfect opportunity for families, groups and students to get involved in their community. Long Island Cares has a goal of reaching
5,000 families and they need your help to reach that goal! They ask that you provide the following specific items in order to provide a Long Island family with a full Thanksgiving meal: - 4 cans of vegetables - 4 cans of fruit - 1 can of pumpkin or pie filling - 1 box/bag of stuffing - 1 box of mashed potato mix - 1 jar/can/packet of gravy - 1 can of cranberry sauce - 1 box of dessert mix (cake/cookie/ muffin) - OPTIONAL: Turkey (please put in a separate bag if you wish to donate this) Donations should be double bagged or in a reusable bag and delivered to their office located at 10 Davids Drive Hauppauge, NY 11788. All donations must be delivered no later than November 20th and must be dropped off between the hours of 8:30AM and 3:30PM Monday - Friday. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Help Mrs. Claus www.helpmrsclaus.com www.facebook.com/helpmrsclaus Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. During Red Ribbon Week, held on Oct. 2125, Shore Road School students in the Bellmore School District pledged to live a healthy lifestyle and to be kind and respectful to others. The annual Red Ribbon campaign is the nation’s oldest and largest drug awareness campaign and one that teaches students how to develop positive, healthy habits early in life. In addition to wearing the iconic color red, students received ribbons to wear during the week and signed a pledge to abide by the standards
of Red Ribbon Week. All students, faculty and staff took the Shining Star Challenge by writing a Random Act of Kindness performed during the week or one that someone performed for them on a red construction paper star. The stars were placed on a bulletin board in the lobby. The students attended a Dignity for All Studentsrelated assembly about how to treat others kindly and without malice and listened to daily announcements about keeping a clear and focused mind, eating healthy foods,
exercising each day and showing respect for the people they encounter each day. Under the direction of social worker Christine Davison, the Random Acts of Kindness Club distributed red slips of paper with a pledge to remain healthy and to make good decisions. After the slips were signed and collected by RAK members, they crafted chains, which are now hung in the lobby as a symbol to the school’s commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
