The seventh-graders have been learning about the parts of animal and plant cells. Using Halloween candy, they decorated pre-baked cupcakes, called “cell cakes,” to represent the organelles and cell structures in plants and animals. A great time was had by all.

Ready, Set... Ready Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Getting ready, for a girl, is a complicated affair. Rare is the female who can simply roll out of bed, jump in and out of the shower in 5 minutes, throw on the first outfit she pulls out of the closet, skip the makeup and extensive hair prep – and just go. I admire those who can, really, I do. Imagine how many hours, days, weeks even, that are saved over the course of just one year – time that could be spent out and about, actually living. But no, most of us have a whole routine, one that,

if anything, becomes lengthier and more complex the bigger the occasion. Like a weekday wedding, for instance. Forget attempting to go into work, leave a little early and freshen up at home on the fly. No, I need to take the entire day off, allotting at least a good five/six hours to the beautification process. Crazy? Perhaps. But who wants to rush? It’s nice to have some time to kick back and relax, allow plenty of time for hair mishaps, smudged makeup, chipped nail polish, runs in your pantyhose, traffic… all

the wonderful nuisances that only seem to happen when you have somewhere important to go. Of course, in the end, people rarely notice all the effort. Everything falls into place, all is well and the time and effort… well, you probably could have cut it in half and come out looking much the same. But such is the life of a girl. We’re wired differently. Think how many business industries thrive on our collective neuroses. You’re welcome. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to start getting ready.

They’re bright yellow, they sit around your child’s neck and they are the main reason as to why your child complained the first two weeks of school more than any other year prior. The new Massapequa High School student ID lanyards are known to everyone in the school as a cumbersome burden that serves no real and effective purpose. This new form of “security and safety enforcement,” as Doctor Barbra Williams puts it, “is to make sure that the security staff can prevent unwarranted intruders from entering the school.” Robert Catinella, a Massapequa High School Senior, compares the new lanyards to “dog collars” and, just like a dog, when a student forgets his collar, he or she is subjected to unfair punishment. When one person forgets his or her “collar,” they are given a lunch

detention, meaning that they cannot go outside for lunch for the day. In addition, that lunch detention can be found on one’s permanent record. For some kids, this could mean everything when it come to getting into a good college. Who is to say that these lanyards, and the supposed purpose they serve, will even be a factor in a high stakes situation? If the school district wants to increase safety, they need to increase security, not tag their students with an ID card that serves no other purpose other than to act as a red flag for security guards. And, to be completely honest, a yellow nylon lanyard isn’t going to stop any one crazy person from getting into a school building. Rumors have been circulating in the building between the staff and students that these lanyards will soon have a magnetic strip in them, which will be required

to be used in order to enter the school. Teachers have to do this in the morning to gain access into the building before the students. Along with every student arriving in the middle lobby for all periods, this new policy, if implemented for the 2015-2016 school year, would make an already broken system chaotic and inefficient. Massapequa School District is not alone in this new wave of “smart safety.” Students in Farmingdale, Amityville and Copiague high schools are being subjected to this plague too. The only way to fix the problem of school safety is to actually address the issue properly and efficiently. In this post Sandy Hook school shooting society we live in, we must not forget that, as a community, we should be pushing for safety and not some false sense of security.

For the 5th year, the Jingle Bell 5K Run/ Walk, scheduled to take place in Long Island on Saturday, December 6th, will bring runners and families together to raise funds to fight and cure arthritis, the nation’s leading cause of disability. The annual festive event, which features a holiday costume contest, kids’ fun run, music and a sponsor expo, will be held at Hofstra University at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Hundreds of Long Island residents including competitive and recreational runners, walkers, corporate teams and families are expected to participate in the Jingle Bell Run/Walk this year. Nina Etcetera provided entertainment during cocktail hour. D.J. Nina Rizzo kept the party atmosphere going in between speeches and official presentations. Comedian Joey Kola kept the guests laughing with his raw humor. Twelve volunteers helped the evening move smoothly and 65 quality baskets and items were raffled off thanks to the generosity of the community.

Ospreys will often use utility poles and transmission structures for nesting, which jeopardizes system reliability, causes outages and damages equipment. Such nesting also puts the birds in danger of electrocution, as their large wingspan can complete the circuit between closely spaced energized equipment or between an energized wire and a neutral ground wire. Long Island is home to many species of birds, including the majestic osprey. Ospreys are large, beautiful birds and a popular sight on Long Island. From the 1950s through the 1970s, Long Island’s osprey population decreased and became endangered. The effort to build safe nesting sites on or near waterways has contributed to the rise in the population of osprey.

LEADDing The Way A crisp fall morning was the backdrop for a one-mile trek through the neighborhood during the district’s annual Levittown Education Against Destructive Decisions Walk and Community Fair on October 26th. This much-anticipated event was the culmination of a week of school assemblies that highlighted ways for students and staff to live healthy lives and make decisions resulting in positive outcomes. MacArthur High School and Dave Hundal from Division Avenue High School accompanied Grand Marshal Esta Lachow in the parade, which was attended by members of the Board of Education and administration, community organizations and school representatives outfitted with colorful banners. introductions. “It is great to see so many girls and boys getting together to support this important program,” District Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Keith Snyder said. Wyleczuk explained. In a sixth-grade class, Wyleczuk instructed the students to measure the mass, density and volume of Halloween objects. The students, dressed in costume for trick-or-treat day, measured plastic rats, fluffy spiders, skulls and small pumpkins. “These projects make learning the information they will be tested on much more fun,” Wyleczuk said.

Touchdown Terror, Graveyard Golf and Spider Bowl are just three of the 15 physical education stations that comprise the Halloween Fitness Funhouse at Forest Lake and Wantagh Elementary Schools. Wantagh Elementary School physical education teacher Christine Moran and current Forest Lake Principal Anthony Ciuffo developed this thrilling and spooky physical education unit a decade ago, and

each year the students look forward to playing games like Candy Corn and Ghostbusters Bowling or traveling through the Tunnel of Terror. Moran explained that the series of Halloweenthemed stations assist kindergarten through fifth-grade students with hand-eye coordination, balance and other motor skills. The stations are also designed to teach a range of physical education skills and keep students moving

throughout the class period. Inspirational signs accompany the ghoulish decorations on the walls, and Halloween music sets the tone for a lively and fun-filled hour of physical exercise. “Not only do the students use skills taught in physical education in a fun-filled way,” Forest Lake physical education teacher David Sposito said, “but the constant movement also helps get them in shape.”

The seventh-graders have been learning about the parts of animal and plant cells. Using Halloween candy, they decorated prebaked cupcakes, called “cell cakes,” to represent the organelles and cell structures in plants and

Baking A Holiday Favorite The smell of freshly baked pumpkin bread wafted through the halls of Wantagh Middle School as Ellen Carr’s and Anne Craven’s family and consumer science students learned to make homemade pumpkin bread. Prior to the activity, the students roasted a pumpkin in order to use the fleshy pulp for their recipe and to compare loaves baked with canned pumpkin to those baked with fresh. After collectively reading the recipe and discussing the purpose of certain ingredients and the difference between yeast and quick breads, the students measured, scooped and mixed the ingredients into small loaves. Carr explained that the lesson used a strong math component in that each of the students were required to convert the ingredient amounts to accommodate a greater number of loves. The students also utilized sequencing skills to successfully mix the batter for the loaves.

The next day, the pumpkin’s seeds were roasted and the bread was served during a traditional tea. The students learned about how tea is brewed and how it should be served, as well. When asked whether canned or fresh pumpkin made a difference in the recipe, Carr said there was not a truly noticeable difference. “It seems that the canned pumpkin is much darker because the pumpkin in the factory is cooked at a much higher temperature,” she said. “Otherwise, all of the bread was delicious.”

Splashes Of Hope The Riverhead Correctional Facility held a special unveiling ceremony yesterday for its new “Splashes of Hope” mural inside the jail, which was painted by incarcerated youth under the guidance of master muralist, Kirk Larsen. The project was funded and sponsored by “Splashes of Hope,” a Huntington-based nonprofit organization, and made possible through the generous donation of Theresa Santmann of Babylon. Santmann, who is also the Vice President of the organization’s Executive Board, had previously sponsored four mural panels in the jail’s Visiting Room.
