Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) hosted its Fourth Annual East End Walk for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival in Westhampton Beach on Saturday, October 17th. Thirty-two teams and 376 individuals came out in support of Alzheimer’s research and awareness. This year’s event featured a pre-walk butterﬂy release in honor of those who are suffering from Alzheimer’s or have lost their battle with the disease. The walk wrapped with the annual Fall Festival. Hundreds of participants, volunteers and vendors turned out for the event, which raised nearly $75,000 in support of Alzheimer’s programs and services for local families. It is the largest amount ADRC has ever raised at its Westhampton Beach walk, exceeding the event’s goal by nearly

Jets Soar Community members, students, staff and administration cheered for the East Meadow High School football team on October 24th as the Jets defeated Baldwin High School, 20-13. Prior to the game, cheerleaders, Rockettes, students and the homecoming court paraded through the community from Veteran’s Memorial Park. Members of each grade created “Attraction” themed ﬂoats,

including The Bronx Zoo, Broadway, Disney and the Big Apple Circus as they threw candy to bystanders. During the game, Jets quarterback Anthony LaRosa was 3-for-5 for 31 yards, scoring two touchdowns and rushing for 23 yards on seven carries. Running back Billy Piano rushed for 37 yards and scored a touchdown on nine carries. At halftime, the cheerleaders, Rockettes and marching band gave

a spectacular performance and received a standing ovation from the crowd. The homecoming king and queen, Caleb Blaise and Victoria Bova, respectively, were then announced. This year’s homecoming court consisted of Joe Antuofermo, Mario Froehlich, William Kratina, Danielle Levy, Nicole McGuinee, Taylor Oommen, Tom Provenzano and Laura Tynan.

Perplexity of Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I find it truly fascinating how individuals can come away with such varying perspectives on the same topic, time and time again. Whether it be politics, societal issues or even something so lighthearted as this very column, everyone is entitled to their opinion – it’s just interesting how that view is arrived upon. Intelligent argument is one thing; shameless bullying quite another. For some, there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I suppose these polarizing issues are what make our world go ‘round. Discussion is the basis of everything, from school classrooms to kitchen tables to podiums

and soapboxes. Especially in this day and age of instant feedback, rarely can an opinion be expressed without an opposing argument cropping up almost immediately. Written forums are the best – or worst, as the case may be – since they afford people the anonymity of expressing often insulting, uneducated retorts. There is something about faceto-face conversation that affords a measure of respect, begrudging though it may be. Personally, I feel this world is full of enough tragedy and conﬂict without the need to touch on it in this column. South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers has always been a forum for celebrating our local school and community

happenings, of offering parents, teachers and coaches the opportunity to spotlight their children – the next generation of up-and-coming debaters. If you’re searching for controversy, there are plenty of mediums to find it. This need not be one of them. It seems to me that, whatever your lot in life, the best approach is always an objective one. Listen before you speak; think before you write; and respect before you reproach. Children learn what they see, and live what they learn; and there is more than enough hatred to go around without bringing it into the home or classroom, onto the field or stage. We, the adults, are the example. Let’s create one we can be proud to pass on.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund held its 3rd Annual Rock & Bowl event last week in an effort to provide three scholarshi ps for students looking to continue their education and promote aware ness among young people not to drink and drive. Over the past three years, the fund has offere d close to $10,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at the Copia gue Memorial High School. This year, we hope to expand by offering the awards to other districts. Before Brittney was killed by a drunk driver only two days after high school graduation, she was always found helping some body, and even after she’s gone, she still is. The Fund and the scholarships are simple; being a 501c3 not-for-profit, all the money raised goes into a managed fund similar to your retirement 401k. This money earns interest and dividends. This earned money then goes to the awards, leaving the principal amou nt there for many years to come.

The Walsh’s lost a big piece of their family back in June three years ago, and feel it every day. Brittney’s mom, Cheryl said, “At times, it’s hard to smile and laugh, and the scholarship writing component helps us do it again.” What makes these three scholarships unique is they all require the scholar to write a 250-word essay detailing “The Funniest Thing You Ever Did” or “The Funniest Thing You Ever Saw.” Chery l continued to say, “You’d be surprised what these kids come up with.”

For months, I’ve been agonizing over what will be one of the biggest choices of my life. During the fall, high school seniors from all over the world fill out their applications and make their college decisions. For me, it turned out to be an easy choice. I have decided to apply early decision to the University of Miami. Only time will tell if my dream of attending “The U” will become a reality. I am looking forward to potentially spending the next four years alongside my brother, who is currently a sophomore at the University of Miami. Although he transferred there - and I’m applying straight out of high school -

we both realize that Miami will provide opportunities for us that cannot be found anywhere else. The vast challenges and possibilities that can potentially be afforded to me by the University of Miami are enticing. I am excited to undertake the next chapter of my life, and I can only hope that chapter takes places in Coral Gables. When I attended the Manhattan Information Session on October 22nd, I was amazed by the presentation. The speakers detailed the financial aid process, the historic football dynasty and the stellar academic reputation associated with the University of Miami.

After the event, I had a chance to speak to Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions. He was happy to answer all the questions that I had regarding the admissions process and left me feeling comfortable about my choice to apply early decision. I was impressed with how knowledgeable and professional he was. I would recommend attending an information session like this to anyone interested in applying to institutions of higher education, and more specifically, The U. That evening truly sealed the deal; I want to be a Miami Hurricane in the fall of 2016.

Students at Northside School in Levittown attended the Fire and Ice science show with Mad Science educator Zenon Zack. This science enrichment program was filled with humor and many scientific terms and experiments that sparked the students’ imagination and interest in science.

Students in grades K-5 discussed the concepts of gravity, a vortex and levitation as they observed the straw-ping pong ball and beach ball-hairdryer experiment, the balls levitating in the air. They also learned about sublimation during an experiment with dry ice, learning that this

substance is frozen carbon dioxide with a temperature of -109 degrees Fahrenheit. After the students returned to their classrooms, they were excited to learn more about the concepts introduced during the Fire and Ice program and to try the ball experiment at home.

Skills USA spring. SkillsUSA is a national organization, serving students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations. The program also hosts local and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. This year’s SkillsUSA officers Arjuna Bello (vice president), Katelyn Benner (reporter), Dylan Bitton (parliamentarian), Kimberly Herrera (president), Sophia Jimenez (secretary), Alma Lagan (club advisor) and

Elijah Segarra (treasurer) were inducted during a traditional candlelighting ceremony. GC Tech Director Frank Creter acknowledged the talents and work done to prepare for the event. He also encouraged the students to “think big” and to become involved with the SkillsUSA program. Participants were also served a delicious meal prepared and served by the culinary students, which included pasta and meatballs, salad, bread and dessert.

among those recognized. “We are so proud of the accomplishments of each of these students,” said Principal Nicole Hollings. “Not only are they very strong in academics, but they have also contributed to the Calhoun community in a variety of ways. Their talents and dedication reach far beyond the

classroom walls. We look forward to seeing what they will accomplish the rest of this year and beyond.” To qualify for this distinction, students must score in the top 5 percentile on the PSAT/ NMSQT exam in their junior year.

In addition, the cheerleaders and kick line teams attended the Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach to unite with other Long Islanders in the campaign to find a cure. At MacArthur High School, the girls and boys volleyball teams played against faculty and staff at the annual Dig Pink event and raised $1,400 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s breast cancer awareness campaign and patient services. Under the direction of

Nancy Stine, the GC Tech cosmetology students held the third annual Pink Nails for Hope at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. Students put their skills to use by applying pink polish and/ or pink ribbons to clients’ fingernails. Donations were made to Making Strides of Long Island for cancer research. In addition, the Key Club hosted a Lawnﬂix Big Screen showing of “Halloweentown” in the LMEC gymnasium. An entrance fee was collected and all proceeds were donated for breast cancer awareness.

Progressive Studies Grand Avenue Middle School is displaying an exhibit entitled, The Progressive Era: Creating Modern America, 19001917. The exhibit, which is on loan from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, explores the reform movement known as the Progressive Era. The panel exhibition displays a myriad of primary sources, including letters, cartoons and photographs that focus on

the social, political and economic problems at the dawn of the 20th century. Eighth-grade teachers developed a project for students to explore the problems and the solutions proposed by reformers of the Progressive Era. Eighth grader Katelyn Schwartz chose to focus her project on Susan B. Anthony, as she said the historic figure was most familiar to her. “I learned that her picture was put on the back

of a coin,” Schwartz said. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School district is an affiliate school of the Institute, which is located in midtown Manhattan. The Institute makes available museum quality American History exhibitions for schools to display on important topics in American history. Excitement filled the air as Winthrop Avenue School students and teachers in Bellmore gathered in the gymnasium for the annual Principal’s Challenge, a physical challenge undertaken by Principal Sally Curto as a reward to the student body for having met or exceeded their reading goal during Parents as Reading

Partners Week. Physical education teacher John Wolkiewicz rallied the students to cheer loudly for Ms. Curto, who donned her tennis shoes and climbed to the top of the cargo net to the cheers of the student body. Upon mastering this challenge, Ms. Curto congratulated the students on having read an

additional 30,000 minutes during PARP Week. She also reminded them that sometimes goals can be difficult to meet, but that it is important to believe in oneself. “When something gets hard to do, remember to say that you can do it,” she said.

Celebrating the Season Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center students in Bellmore celebrated the fall season during the hosting of Octoberfest and the Pumpkin Patch. These much-anticipated events provided students with opportunities to participate in fall-themed educational activities while socializing with peers. During Octoberfest, second-grade students were divided into stations, where they estimated how many pennies could fit on

the face of a pumpkin and put together a scarecrow craft. They also colored a glyph, a picture that requires the students to listen to directions and choices before coloring a section. Students also learned how to measure the circumference of a pumpkin. In addition, the school courtyard was converted into a pumpkin patch, where each student was provided time to pick their favorite pumpkin. Teachers

also took their class to a decorative location where they took a photo with their pumpkins. Upon returning to the classroom, students engaged in pumpkin activities that included measuring the height and circumference of the gourds, counting the number of veins, writing descriptions about their pumpkins and listening to stories about the fall and Halloween.

Math Night Held K-2 and grades 3-5) that are part of the enVision Program and supporting activities that assist in understanding concepts such as number facts, place value, counting and fractions. For parents of middle school students, workshops centered on online resources that are part of the enVision program and seventh-and eighthgrade program. Parents of high school students attended workshops on the curriculum for Algebra I

Common Core, Geometry Common Core and Algebra 2 Common Core and Beyond, as well as the online resources available to students. Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Debbie Rifkin noted that Parent Math Night was highly informative. “Our goal for the evening was to make parents feel more comfortable after having received specific tools and resources to assist their children with mathematics homework,” she said.

First Pitch After being nominated by District parents, Bellmore first-grade teacher David Reilly was named Teacher of the Month for July 2015 by radio station KJOY FM. As a result of this honor, Mr. Reilly was invited to throw the first pitch at the Long Island Ducks baseball game on August 23rd. Mr. Reilly has been

a teacher at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center for 14 years and is president of the Bellmore Faculty Organization. He describes Bellmore as a special place where he has always felt great support from his colleagues and the administration. The nomination was made even more special by the

amount of parent support and votes he received in winning the award. “The best part of being named Teacher of the Month was hearing what parents said about me as a teacher and an individual,” Mr. Reilly said. “I am really touched by all of this.”

International Winner

Levittown student Kimberly Rodriguez, a junior at Division Avenue High School, won honorable mention and a $250 prize for her poetry submission to the 2015 International Ocean Awareness Student Contest. The contest prompted students to consider the theme, “Our Oceans Our Plastic,” in order to direct

attention to the growing international problem of ocean plastic pollution, combining art, science and environmental advocacy to give oceans a voice in the form of art, poetry, writing or film. Kimberly’s winning poem titled “My Home: The Blue Heaven to Artificial Earth” was written from the perspective of a sea fish living in an ocean

community among destructive plastic pollution. “From the beginning I really wanted people to see how beautiful and diverse the ocean is, filled with creatures and very exotic plants,” Kimberly said. “Then I went from the beauty of a unique community to the downfall of its civilization to compare the impact that humans are having on our oceans.” The district congratulates Kimberly on this outstanding accomplishment. Research Honors

The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that the research of MacArthur High School science research students Jamie Aquilino, Jasmine Chevez, Danielle Pinto and Devin Zeller was displayed at the Middle States Association of American Geographers on October 2nd-3rd in Binghamton, New York. These four researchers were the only high school

students whose research was accepted for display among the research of graduate and postgraduate students, college students, professors and professionals. The goal of the MSAAG is to advance investigations in geography and to encourage the application of geographic findings in education, government and business. Jasmine’s and Devin’s

research project investigated the effect of demographics on standardized test scores, while Danielle’s and Jamie’s research explored popular suburban youth hangouts. Both teams have been working on their projects for the past two years under the direction of Dr. David Friedman and Matthew Zausin.

Then using a Smart Board, Ms. Pace would move the players on the bases, but not before each student solved a math problem correctly. After the feverish math game competition, the students settled down to some writing and were

instructed to describe their favorite part of the game. During a Fall Classic Writing activity, Ms. Nally’s first-grade students have been learning to write a friendly letter. They incorporated their newly acquired skills to write good luck letters to the New York Mets as they competed in the World Series.

W. T. Clarke Middle School students in the East Meadow School District created “I Am Amazing” t-shirts in honor of Unity Day. Prior to creating the t-shirts, students participated in an

interactive assembly titled “Be Amazing!” The assembly encouraged students to strive each day to be their personal best regardless of limitations. Following the presentation, students created paper “I Am

Amazing” t-shirt cutouts with reasons as to why they are amazing. Students wrote a variety of attributes, including that they receive good grades, lend a helping hand and are nice to their classmates.

Destination: Doom It was gore galore at Sanford H. Calhoun High School as a classroom was transformed into Destination: Doom – a walk-through haunted house. Students paid a nominal fee to enter the dark room, which was packed with spooky sights, costumed characters and horror film-worthy make up. The cast behind this creepy classroom experience was the International Buddy Club, who worked countless hours after school and during free

periods to make this Halloween experience a haunting delight. The IBC was created by English Language Learners at Calhoun with the original purpose of having an orientation program for new foreign students who come to Calhoun. During the past four years, it has morphed into a much bigger and more active club where foreign students and American students get to know each other through social and cultural activities. “One amazing thing

about it that developed naturally is that we have so many different types of students involved,” said ENL teacher and IBC advisor Heather Glick. “They included students from cosmetology who do make-up, students from drama who help with costumes and acting, students who are good at baking who bake scary snacks for the afterparty (for club members) and other students who brainstorm and design and create sets and costumes and music and lighting.”

The students began their service for Tuesday’s Children by creating Mepham’s first Flag Field of Honor. Flags were sold throughout the community for the month of September. A total of 275 flags were sold, including 24 military flags. “The Mepham Alumni Association purchased 43 flags in honor of those alumni who died in serving in the military,” Dennis explained. The flags are 3’ x 5’ and each stand on a 6’ pole on the front lawn of Mepham between November 1 and mid-December. “More than 120 members of the Class of 2016, parent and teacher volunteers, custodians, administrators and our Superintendent of Schools,

Mr. DeTommaso, gathered at Mepham to assist and celebrate the Class of 2016’s Field of Honor to recognize our Veterans, Service Men and Women and First Responders,” Mepham Principal Michael Harrington said. “The overwhelming turnout and the incredible efforts of our school community left me in awe.” The proceeds raised from the ﬂag sales will go directly to Tuesday’s Children. Tuesday’s Children was formed in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks. The group initially worked with children who lost a parent on September 11th, but have since branched to encompass recovery workers from September 11th efforts, military and children from around the world impacted by terrorism.

Pumpkin Curriculum Birch Elementary fourth-graders in the Merrick School District studied various subjects with the help of pumpkins. Each student rotated between six stations utilizing their pumpkins

in science, math and literacy activities. Among the stations, students predicted the height, weight, circumference and buoyancy of their pumpkins. In addition, students

learned facts about pumpkins and squash, creating poems and Venn diagrams comparing them to other fruits and vegetables.

As part of a service-based project for the Mepham High School senior class, the front lawn of the school is dotted with American and military ﬂags to raise money and awareness for their adopted organization, Tuesday’s Children. The school first learned about the organization eight years ago when a member of the class of 2011 explained to them how Tuesday’s Children had made a profound impact on her life following the death of her grandmother in the World Trade Center. “Her brother, a class of 2015 graduate, spoke with us recently about how much of an impact Tuesday’s Children had on his life. The connection to our Mepham family made working with this organization all the more important,” Kerry Dennis, a history teacher and project organizer said.

related charity. At Merrick Avenue Middle School, Rammy the Ram and his pal, Merrick Avenue Teddy were portrayed by Dylan Lipman and Charlie Goldberg. “The students have officially revived the Merrick Avenue mascot,”
