The North Bellmore School District marked Red Ribbon Week with numerous activities at its elementary schools during the last week of October that encouraged students to make healthy choices. The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation and this year’s theme was “YOLO: Be Drug Free #YouOnlyLiveOnce.” After school on October 26th, members of the Newbridge Road Elementary School Student Council gathered outside to put red cups in the fence to spell out “Just Say No.” The purpose was to show the community the school’s commitment

the campaign, students signed a large banner that read “Saw Mill Road Pledges To Be Drug Free,” which had close to 750 names on it by the end of the week and then was hung in front of the school. Children were encouraged to wear red, received Red Ribbon Week “YOLO” pencils, and participated in an assembly. “At Saw Mill Road School, we promote and encourage making smart choices all year long,” said Assistant Principal Danica Brugge. “We are happy to have one week dedicated to events, discussions and celebrations that promote and encourage making good choices not just for a week but for life.”

Ghosts, monsters and goblins were aplenty at Forest Lake Elementary School in the Wantagh School District as staff and students connected Halloween activities to their physical education and English language arts lessons. The Tunnel of Terror, Graveyard Swing and Haunted Hoops were just three of the various stations that comprised the Halloween Fitness

Funhouse. During this funfilled and spooky physical education unit, students not only kept moving continuously, but took part in exercises and activities that strengthened their eye coordination, balance, and fine and gross motor skills. In Lori Gottlieb’s firstgrade class, students read Jennifer O’Connell’s “Ten Timid Ghosts,” and then recreated a personal haunted house out of paper grocery bags. They

described their haunted homes to peers prior to writing about their houses’ qualities. In addition to a trip to Schmitt’s Farm, fourthgraders decorated their pumpkins as literary characters from their favorite books. Students also presented their pumpkins to the class and explained the book’s storyline and inspirational character.

Exciting Opportunity High school honor students across Long Island who choose to become physical therapists, occupational therapists, or physician assistants can get a head start on their college careers through a new Integrated Honors Track at Touro College School of Health Sciences (SHS) in Bay Shore. The program was created for those seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in the sciences and a commitment to pursuing an education in the PT, OT, or PA professions. “The Integrated Honors track is a fantastic opportunity for highachieving students to progress seamlessly into their chosen future,” said Art Sullivan, Interim Coordinator of the

Integrated Health Sciences Honors Track and Assistant Chair for Undergraduate Studies. Healthcare professions continue to be among the most desirable careers in the U.S. In a 2016 U.S. News survey on The Best Healthcare Jobs, Physician Assistant ranked #4 with a median salary of $95,820; Physical Therapist ranked #12 with a median salary of $82,390; and Occupational Therapist ranked #17 with a median salary of $78,810. In recent years, Touro’s pass rates for graduates in those departments have ranged from 90-100 percent. Halloween Hoopla participated in a Halloween singalong. In David Reilly’s firstgrade class, students made Halloween bookmarks for their home and classroom reading and made a healthy snack out of grapes and marshmallows, emphasizing their direction-following skills. Pre-K students participated in a singalong of their favorite Halloween songs for their family and friends. In addition, the school’s youngest students

decorated their pumpkins using the mod podge process, pasting colored tissue paper on their orange gourds. Earlier in the week the entire school also attended the Pumpkin Patch, where each class estimated the weight of their individual pumpkins, guessed the total number of candy corns in a container and took a class picture on the decorated auditorium stage.

their caregivers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home. “Their mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of the military and first responder communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for civilians anywhere in America to express their appreciation to all who serve our nation,” said Kerry Dennis, a history teacher and project organizer. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than 1,600,000 care

packages. The seniors gathered on October 30th to assemble Mepham’s second Flag Field of Honor. Nearly 280 flags were sold this year in honor of the victims of Sept.ember 11th, first responders, veterans and current servicemen and women. In addition, more than 600 students signed up to participate in Mepham’s Battle of the Classes on November 3rd. All proceeds from the Flag Field and Battle of the Classes will be donated to Tuesday’s Children.

No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

To enhance the Wantagh School District’s STEAM initiative, students at Mandalay, Forest Lake and Wantagh elementary schools are provided with additional science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics workshops during recess in the schools’ STEAM classroom labs. Under the direction of STEAM

teacher Kaitlin Dayton, students can work on various projects during recess time. Fifth-graders at Mandalay Elementary Schools prepared for higher-level programming skills during an Ozobot workshop. Working in pairs, the students placed their miniature robots, which are equipped with

light sensors, on an Ozobot sheet with pre-coded lines. The students were then instructed to replicate the code within their own course designs, using multi-colored Ozobot pens with sensors. The goal was for each Ozobot to perform the tasks embedded in the students’ courses.

Flag Field of Honor Students at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District installed American and military flags along the school lawn October 30th as part of a service-based project for the senior class. The front lawn of the school is dotted with sponsored American and military flags to raise money and awareness for their adopted organization, Tuesday’s Children. Fundraising efforts by students yielded nearly $5,000 from the sale of 278 flags. Kerry Dennis, a history teacher and project organizer, said she thinks

the service project this semester has “taught students never to forget the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 as well has the incredible sacrifices made by our service men and women to defend our freedom and protect us from those who are opposed to it.” Other teacher organizers included Social Studies Chairperson Robyn Einbinder, Christopher Patten, Marc Achtziger, Erica Wagner and Sarah Bender. feet tall and each stand on a 6-foot pole on the front lawn of Mepham between Nov. 1 and mid-December. The proceeds raised from the flag sales will go directly to Tuesday’s Children. Tuesday’s Children was formed in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The group initially worked with children who lost a parent on that tragic day, but have since branched to encompass recovery workers from September 11th efforts, military and children from around the world impacted by terrorism.

Additionally, he serves as president of the school’s Tri-M Music, Science and National honor societies. He is also a member of the Math Honor Society, the school newspaper, Mathletes, Science Olympiad, and has performed in the pit orchestra for the last three years in the school’s plays. This September, Joseph was recognized as a semifinalist in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 1.6 million students entered the competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalists are recognized with a selection index score based on their combined scores in critical reading, mathematics and writing. While in college, Joseph plans to study chemical engineering. Characters from popular children’s books took on a new look at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. The school hosted its annual storybook character pumpkin decorating contest at the end of October. Organized by librarian Phyllis Squicciarini, the

rule was that the character had to appear in a book before they were in a movie or on television. There were dozens of entries made from pumpkins large and small, and entries included Harry Potter, Waldo, Snoopy, The Cat in the Hat, Willy Wonka and more. The contest was

voluntary and students decorated their pumpkins at home, before bringing them in to school to be displayed in the main lobby and judged. There were two categories: “I Made it Myself” and “I Made it with Help.” Winning students received $10 to the upcoming school book fair from the PTA.

Wellington C. Mepham High School’s chapter of the National Italian Honor Society in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District recently hosted its annual Italian Culture Night. Under the direction of teacher, Kristen Montuori, students, faculty, parents and community members joined to celebrate the Italian culture for the 15th year. The evening was filled with music, poetry, games and food. Honor Society members Samantha Morgan and Olivia LaRocchia sang Il Volo’s version of “Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu.” Amanda LaRossa recited the poem,

“Vorrei averti vicino” by Adelina Della Bosca. The evening also included the annual game of Tombola, Italian stylebingo, led by Christina Gargano and Rebecca Spear. To truly appreciate the Italian culture, the honor society led the guests in a sing/play along to a classic, Italian favorite, “Eh Cumpari.” Everyone in attendance used musical instruments as props to play and sing along to the popular song. The Italian Honor Society would like to thank all of the Mepham families as well as the local businesses that helped to make the event successful

Pumpkin Patch Party Amidst the fall season, the Bowling Elementary School PTA in the East Meadow School District held a pumpkin patch festival for kindergartners to pick and decorate their own pumpkins. Gathered eagerly on

the front lawn, the young students ran toward scattered pumpkins, picking their favorites from a wide selection. Afterward, they took part in photo opportunities with bales of hay and scarecrow face cutouts.

The festivities wound down in the all-purpose room, where the students and their parents enjoyed refreshments and decorated their pumpkins with Halloween themedstickers and pipe cleaners.

Following, the four students presented the board with some homemade tokens of appreciation, as well as new leather portfolios and a thank-you card signed by members of the school community, recognizing the board for their commitment and dedication to the children, staff and community.

Spreading Roots In honor of Unity Day on October 19th, the staff and student body of the East Meadow School District joined together to take a stance against bullying by creating a unity tree in the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center. Throughout the day, students, teachers, faculty members and central administrators signed

leaves as a pledge to be upstanders and put an end to bullying within their community. With more than 75 leaves signed and collected, members of the W.T. Clarke High School Art Honor Society pasted the foliage on a 16-by-12-foot painting in the Salisbury Center’s conference room. The tree symbolizes

kindness, togetherness and partnership across the district. At the building level, schools celebrated Unity Day by creating their own trees, rainbow arches and hosting Mix-It-Up Days during their lunch periods, where students sat with peers they didn’t know in order to cultivate new friendships.

Standing Up Chatterton School students in the Merrick School District learned an important lesson about standing up and doing the right thing in situations of bullying with the help of comedian and former teacher Mike Spiers. Sponsored by the school’s PTA, Spiers’ assembly, “Be an Upstander, Not a Bystander,” revolved

around the different types of bullying that take place around students and the importance of treating others with kindness and doing the right thing. With assemblies geared to specific grade levels, students gathered in the all-purpose room, where they related to the message of being a positive role model for others and how

being nice, sincere and caring can impact the lives of their peers. Additionally, Spiers encouraged students to talk to an adult if they experience or witness any acts of bullying and also provided strategies and tactics to help students stand up against bullying for themselves and fellow students.

Fifth-graders in Laura Conway’s class at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District turned Halloween into an educational and artistic adventure. The students were asked to pick a humanitarian, past or present, and write a report about the person.

At home, they carved or decorated pumpkins to resemble that person. The masterpieces were then brought to school and displayed outside of the classroom. Students could choose any famous person they look up to as long as they had done something to

better mankind or done work for a charitable cause. The children chose world leaders, athletes, actors and other historical figures. This project was part of a social studies lesson in which students learned about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Students from Sanford H. Calhoun, John F. Kennedy and Wellington C. Mepham high school’s Leadership classes traveled together to Project CARE (Challenge Activities Rope Experience) on October 24th-25th. Project CARE is a nontraditional, experiential approach to

building individual and team growth. The program has been designed to help children and adolescents develop self-esteem, confidence and trust in one’s self and others. These ambassadors are from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s “One Voice, One Message,” a districtwide,

student-led think tank. Created in March 2014, student ambassadors from the district’s four high schools and two middle schools join together throughout the school year to address issues impacting the student body and surrounding community.

The Wellington C. Mepham High School Social Studies Department in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District hosted an Issues Forum to discuss important topics relevant to the 2016 election. Students came after

school to hear six members of the department speak. Mr. Murphy opened with a discussion on why Americans have become so politically dissatisfied. Then teachers Gregg Zogby, Stu Stein, Christopher Patten, Sarah Bender and Henry Dircks

all described important issues - the economy, immigration, race, foreign policy and veterans’ affairs - by addressing the key aspects of each one and offering various possible solutions. Students then asked the panel questions, creating an open dialogue.

Drama Fundraiser On October 30th, Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Skull and Bones Drama Club in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District volunteered, performed and walked at the annual walk for Everything Special Needs at Greis Park in Lynbrook. Everything Special Needs is an organization that is dedicated to helping

children and adults with special needs, as well as their families, find services, programs and support. The Skull and Bones students selected the group as the beneficiary of its annual charity revue and subsequent fundraising efforts. To date, Skull and Bones has raised $666 for EVS. Skull and Bones’ annual “A Night on Broadway”

musical revue will be held on Friday, January 20th, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Mepham auditorium. All proceeds will be donated to Everything Special Needs. The revue has also been bookmarked by EVS as a “planned playdate” at which its members and beneficiaries can gather and attend.
