The East Meadow School District congratulates East Meadow High School’s Jets Marching Band, who captured first place in New York City’s 75th annual Columbus Day Parade on Oct. 14. The district also commends W.T. Clarke High School’s Rams Marching Band, who took secondplace honors. The Jets Marching Band, comprised of 165 instrumentalists and 18 color guard members, has performed in the city’s Columbus Day Parade on numerous occasions and has received first-place honors in the march 14 times. In addition, the group has performed in the Orange Bowl Parade, at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and in Long Island’s Columbus Day Parade, in addition to performing at all
home and playoff football games. Under the direction of Stephen Engle, Gregory Sisco and Zachary Robason, along with color guard coordinator Monica Becker, the East Meadow Marching Band began their Columbus Day performance with “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa and concluded with a Paul Murtha arrangement of the Earth, Wind and Fire classic, “In the Stone.” The W.T. Clarke Marching Band is led by director Molly Tittler Ingoglia, assistant director David Fletcher, percussion caption head Steven Blutman, color guard caption head Alexandria DeVries, and chairperson of music Jessica Shenker. The band’s 2019-20 performance program is comprised of “Havana
Express” by Victor Lopez and “Children of Mangione” by Chuck Mangione. In addition to performing in the New York City Columbus Day Parade, the band also performed at the school’s homecoming parade and at Long Island’s Columbus Day parade in midOctober. They have also previously performed at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. The band is looking forward to returning to the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, D.C. in April 2020. The district commends both marching bands for their success in the Columbus Day Parade and looks forward to a fantastic remainder of the season.

Selected For All-State Music Festival Each year, young musicians throughout New York State receive the exciting notification that they have been selected to participate in the NYSSMA All-State Music Festival. This year, the BellmoreMerrick music department is proud to announce that they have seven students selected with four alternates — a record number for the district. Celebrating Homecoming The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District (POBCSD) recently welcomed hundreds of fans, community members and alumni to enjoy its annual Homecoming celebration at the conclusion of Spirit Week. The Homecoming parade featured students from all seven schools, including extracurricular groups, and members of the Board of Education and administration, who marched alongside students, parents and staff. The parade was soon followed by the Homecoming football game and halftime show, where
the high school marching band, kickline and cheerleaders performed. The Homecoming King, Andrew Zutler, and Homecoming Queen, Skylar Musick, were announced following the performances. Throughout the day those in attendance explored the POB Homecoming Village, which offered activities for all community members to partake in including Name that Broadway Tune, face painting, pumpkin decorating, blowup soccer darts, beanbag toss, basketball, and other fun activities for all ages.
The theme of this year’s Homecoming celebration was video games. Each grade level collaborated to create their own themed banners, with the gradelevel winner being crowned at the game’s halftime-but it was the senior Class of 2020 who took home the win with their Super Mario Seniors banner. While the Plainview-Old Bethpage Hawks lost to the Port Washington Vikings 35-13, the Homecoming celebration achieved the goal of bringing the community together as a whole and was a huge success.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District SEPTA and Community Parent Center will host the 13th annual Resources and Recreation Services Fair for students of all ages with different learning abilities on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 6-8:20 p.m., at Sanford H. Calhoun High School, 1786 State St., Merrick. The event is a stepby-step walk through the process of getting services, from eligibility determination through employment, as well as recreation options for people with special needs, featuring more than 50
agency information tables. Eleven workshops covering Care Coordination Organization, OPWDD agency-directed, Selfdirected services, SelfAdvocacy, Guardianships/ Special Needs Trust, Assistive Technology, Managed Care and Future Trends for OPWDD, special needs planning and so much more. Recreational, leisure and socialization programs available within the community will also be explored. In order to make these community connections, representatives from a variety of agencies and businesses will be at hand
to discuss their programs with families and selfdirected individuals.
