Evolving Over Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan First it was small groups of college Journalism students at my alma mater, then it progressed to high school newspaper staffs at an awards ceremony… and now add an elementary school newspaper club to my public speaking repertoire. Who would have thought? There was a time when the mere mention of the dreaded words, “oral presentation,” would strike a chord of fear deep within. As soon as the syllabus for the year was handed out back in high school and college, the anxiety began. What would I say? Would I use note cards and attempt to ad lib? Should I write out each word and read from it, never daring to glance up or make

eye contact with my audience? What if I just “winged” it, as they say, and worked it all out on the spot? Well, with rare exception, I can pretty much assure you that two of the three options NEVER happened. Rather, I was a big fan of: write it out, rehearse it to the point of practically memorizing every line anyway, but don’t dare stray from the script – after all, you might mess it up, miss a word, lose your place, whatever… and we couldn’t have that! What captivating presentations they must have been. Fast forward to the present day when, by virtue of my career, I have been afforded several opportunities to speak to those up-and-coming students in the field, ranging from the age of 8 to … whatever age it is college

students are these days. Me. Of all people. They must assume I can intelligently speak on things of a journalistic nature, having been employed in this area for the better part of the last nine years. And so, in the interest of evolving to meet these expectations, I have tentatively taken on these speaking engagements, preparing for each in my own unique way – and hoping, fingers crossed, that I can make an adequate impression. So far, so good. Practice does – eventually – make perfect. I will never possess the natural gift that others do; however, I no longer cringe at the prospect of an audience either. I suppose it’s fortunate that the majority of my job can be conducted via the written word.

During the Olympics, have you ever wondered what that funny sport with the eight identical giants in spandex rowing a boat in sync was? Crew, or rowing, is an elitist sport that is gaining popularity due to both its difficulty and its beauty. Around since 1430 BC, Crew is one of the world’s oldest sports. Originating as a punishment for prisoners and as the alternative to a sail, rowers were forced to row for hours on end. Today, Crew is no longer revered for the practicality of transportation, but for the intricacy of technique and the adrenaline of competition. The sport of rowing consists of a crew of oarsmen and, in some cases, a coxswain. The rowers, who are arranged in boats dubbed Shells, can either be solo or in groups

of 2, 4 or 8. I am on a boat consisting of eight, who have been rowing together for St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip for three years, with friendship being a crucial factor to success. This past weekend, my boat competed at the Long Island Championships, held in Oyster Bay. Larger boats are allotted a coxswain, whose job is quite complex. This lightweight coxswain must steer the boat, as well as motivate his crew and ultimately win the race. He is truly the core of a firstclass boat. Rowers either scull or sweep, with the former using two smaller oars, one in each hand. A sweep rower is almost always in a larger boat, with the exception being a pair. A sweep rower has one oar and must maintain balance, while still ensuring textbook

technique and absolute power. As a rower, I can truly appreciate the physical strength and endurance that an athlete partaking in this sport must command. Most rowers train both on a rowing machine and on the water 5-7 days a week and are extremely dedicated to the pursuit of a gold medal. For the countless hours an athlete puts in throughout the year, he or she is rewarded with less than 10 races, each consisting of less than six minutes. It takes a focused mindset to be a rower, but if you can handle the sport, the benefits are endless. This weekend, we are competing at the New York State Championships in Lake Saratoga, representing Long Island for St. John the Baptist DHS.

students used to describe their pumpkins. They were also instructed to define whether their pumpkins were short or tall and to choose other words on the Smart Board that described their pumpkins. During the mathematics portion of the activity, the students became pumpkin detectives, investigating and recording the number of lines or vertical creases on each pumpkin. They measured the height of their pumpkins using

Unifix cubes, and the circumference using green yarn. The students were also asked to predict whether the teacher’s pumpkin would sink or float in a bucket of water. The best part of the lesson, however, was the investigation of the contents of the pumpkins, including the seeds and slimy innards. After the class completed their activities, they took the pumpkins home to carve for Halloween.

Bessel led the school’s band in a variety of musical selections that added an uplifting and joyous tone to the event. Classes designed colorful banners and posters, and because it was also “Crazy Hat Day” at the school, students donned hats of different styles and colors to “put a cap on drugs” as part of their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. In addition, to culminate Red Ribbon Week, McVey held its first annual McVey 5K and one-mile fun run on October 27th. The event not only promoted a healthy lifestyle, but also raised funds for the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping individuals, families and members of the workplace prevent or recover from alcoholism or other drug addictions.

Wantagh students from each of the district’s elementary and secondary schools honored the Board of Education trustees for their volunteer service to the school district and community during School Board Recognition Week. This annual celebration takes place each October and is sponsored by the New York State School Boards Association, honoring the trustees’ commitment to public education. Forest Lake Elementary School created a giant, colorful poster that spelled out “Thank You Board of Education” in individual letters. Each class, as well as faculty and staff, signed one of the poster’s letters. Trustees also received a red ribbon badge from Mandalay Elementary School students to wear at the meeting and a thank you banner. Wantagh Elementary School

Seeking Volunteers Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray announced that the town is seeking volunteers for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Now entering its 39th year, the VITA Program is sponsored by the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service. “We are currently seeking individuals who would like to dedicate some of their spare time to become a VITA volunteer,” said Supervisor Kate Murray. “Over the past 38 years, VITA volunteers trained by the Town of Hempstead have assisted thousands of seniors and residents with limited incomes, helping them to obtain the maximum allowable refund when filing their tax returns.”

Through the VITA program, volunteers are trained and then assigned to town senior centers and local libraries to assist town seniors and residents with limited incomes in the preparation of their federal and state income tax returns. Volunteers need not have a professional background or any previous experience in order to assist. The only requirements for volunteering are a willingness to work with people and numbers, and availability for at least 3 daytime hours per week during the 10-week program (February, March and part of April 2014). IRS-trained instructors will train volunteers at the Department of Senior Enrichment, located at 200 North Franklin Street in Hempstead during a multi-

day training program beginning on December 9th, 2013. Saturday training sessions will be conducted on January 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th, 2014 at the Oceanside Public Library located at 30 Davison Avenue in Oceanside. “In order to ensure that this free program enjoys continued success, I encourage anyone who is able to dedicate at least three hours per week during the upcoming tax season to consider joining this outstanding group of volunteers,” concluded Murray. Each station is designed to teach a range of physical education skills and to keep the students moving throughout the period. The older students are also required to keep score at each station and to make a final tally at the end of class, incorporating mathematics into the program. Inspirational signs accompany the ghoulish decorations on

the walls and Halloween music sets the tone for a lively and fun-filled physical hour of exercise. Physical education teacher David Sposito explained that the spooky physical education unit has a dual purpose. “Not only do the students use skills taught in physical education in a funfilled way,” he said, “but the Halloween Fitness Funhouse also makes the students excited about exercise and getting in shape.”

The Levittown Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce its selection of Dean Baer of Baer Financial Services as Small Business Person of the Year. Baer’s career in the financial services industry began with his first job as a teller at Westbury Federal Savings Bank. From there he moved to Bank of New York, where he became branch services manager and then onto Emigrant Financial Services, where he served as a financial consultant. In 2004, he

started with New York Life Insurance Company and created Baer Financial Services. A father of two, Baer is a lifelong resident of Levittown. He is the Immediate Past President of the Levittown Chamber of Commerce and has served as a volunteer fireman with the Levittown Fire Department for 24 years. Baer was honored in October, along with honorees from 37 chambers of commerce across the

county, at a breakfast reception sponsored by the Nassau County Council of Chambers of Commerce. Attending from Levittown were Steve Philmus, president; Donald Patane, 1st vice president; Eric Rosenblum, counsel/ secretary; and Directors Louise Cassano, Beth Dalton-Costello and Kevin Regan as well as Baer Financial Services staffers Kathy O’Neill and Rich Budelman.

Spirits were high despite overcast skies among 650 walkers from 63 teams who turned out on Sunday, October 6th, to raise more than $68,000 in Stony Brook Medicine’s second annual Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis 5K Walk on the Stony Brook University campus. The walk, which raises funds for medical research as well as awareness in the community of the devastating effects of digestive diseases, is a joint effort of Stony Brook Medicine and the Long Island chapter of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). In addition to the participants, more than 100 volunteers came out to help. The day began with prewalk festivities, including music and activities for kids, followed by the 2.3mile walk, which was

kicked off with music from the Stony Brook University Marching Band. Among the largest fundraising groups was the Stony Brook Medicine team – which was organized by Ellen Li, MD, PhD, Professor and Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine; and Ramona Rajapakse, MD, Associate Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology – raised more than $5,700, which will be designated to fund CCFA’s research, professional and patient education, and outreach programs. Among the walkers were patients, family members, friends, staff from Stony Brook Medicine and community members. “Events like these contribute greatly to our efforts to educate the community about

digestive diseases,” Dr. Li said. “Building awareness and gathering research support for Crohn’s disease and colitis strengthens our ability to make real progress towards a cure.” Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis (UC) are inflammatory diseases of the bowel, broadly categorized as inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD. More than 1.4 million American adults and children are affected by these digestive diseases. Donations for the walk are still being accepted at the CCFA website.
