The Perfect Dress By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The perfect dress. Is there even such a thing? Perhaps. It’s just that, when pressed for time, the search becomes seemingly more futile by the day. Store after store, scanning the racks for something – anything – that stands out and screams you... I suppose I’m atypical in the sense that I’m part of a rare breed of girl that doesn’t enjoy shopping; that is, not when I need something specific, anyway. Send me on a random shopping spree with all the time in the world, and I have no problem dropping several hundred dollars in a matter of hours. But give me an occasion, a short window of time to find something appropriate and,

well, let’s just say that window closes most of the way before I can motivate myself to venture out. Couple that with my deep aversion to being forced to navigate an entire mall, that endless, sprawling layout of department stores and dress shops, and my options become increasingly limited. More often than not, I find myself on the complete opposite side from where I need to be, standing in front of one of the gigantic maps, vainly trying to ascertain the quickest route to my destination. Once in the store, there’s the matter of locating which floor the department you’re seeking is on, which, oddly enough, some employees don’t even seem to have a handle on. So

after riding the escalator up and down and making the rounds of each level, I can then get down to the purpose of my mission – actually pinpointing something I like, finding it in my size and then, assuming steps 1 & 2 go as planned, crossing my fingers that said “perfect” dress is somewhat affordable. Sound simple? Let’s just say my last dress shopping mission, which I began precisely two weeks before the date I needed it, has so far encompassed two different malls, several department stores and random dress shops and resulted in my purchasing two different selections, neither of which I am completely sold on. Weddings For Warriors The United States Marines Corps and Dream Event Planning announced the launch of the new L.I. Weddings for Warriors program at the Coral House in Baldwin. The program will assist those in the armed services with making

special arrangements for displaced couples while a service man or woman is overseas in places like Afghanistan. They will volunteer on Long Island bases, or other military facilities, in preparing weddings and vow renewals.

“Unfortunately, because of deployments, you do not always know when duty will call. Couples may be pulled from one another with little time to plan an entire wedding. We want to thank the brave men and women that fight tirelessly to

During two emotional and empowering Rachel’s Challenge assemblies, Wantagh Middle School and High School students were reminded that all it takes is one act of kindness to make a difference to someone and to improve the world. In her presentation, facilitator Meichelle Gibson told the students, “There is no such thing as little compliments or little insults. They last a lifetime.” The Rachel’s Challenge program is based on the writings of Rachel Scott,

the first student killed at Columbine High School in 1999. Rachel had regularly reached out to others who were different, picked on or new to the school. Her theory was that “if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” During the assembly, Gibson gave the students five challenges: look for the best in others, dream big, choose positive influences, spread kind words and start your own chain reaction by telling others that you care.

Part of the program included breakout sessions with Gibson. Members of the middle school’s student council and Upstanders Club and the high school’s peer leaders discussed how the presentation affected them, along with strategies they could use if they encounter bullying. Gibson also suggested specific projects to help the students deter bullying. During the rest of the school year, the breakout group participants will create activities to spread kindness throughout the schools.

Flu Immunization Program Flu season has arrived. To help safeguard senior citizens from the health risks posed by the seasonal flu, Hempstead Town is kicking off its Annual Senior Flu Shot Program on November 5th at the Wantagh Senior Center. In partnership with South Nassau Communities Hospital and the Nassau University Medical Center, Hempstead Town is offering the flu shot to senior citizens at four locations in November. Teen To Compete Alexis Zirogiannis, age 11, of Levittown was recently selected to participate in the 2014 Miss Pre-Teen New York pageant competition that will take place on Sunday November 16th. Alexis learned of her acceptance into this year’s competition when the pageant announced their selections following interviewing in the local New York area. Alexis submitted an application and took part in an interview session that was conducted by this year’s New York Pageant

Coordinator. Alexis will be competing in the Miss Pre-Teen Division, one of four divisions that will have young ladies ages of 7 and 19 competing in modeling routines, which include casual wear and formal wear. Most important, Alexis will display her personality and interviewing skills while interviewing with this year’s New York judging panel. Personality is the number one aspect that each contestant is judged on during all phases of competition.

Alexis is an honor student at the Wisdom Lane Middle School in Levittown. She is also, currently, a brown belt at the Y.H. Park Taekwondo Academy of Levittown, where she trains with her parents, brother, cousins, and uncles. If Alexis were to win the title of Miss Pre-Teen New York, she would represent New York and the surrounding communities at the National Competition that will take place in Orlando, Florida.

In recognition of National Teen Driver Safety Week, Wellington C. Mepham High School, in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, teamed up with the Nassau County District Attorney’s office to host AT&T’s “It Can Wait” assembly, a powerful anti-texting-whiledriving presentation that highlights the dangers of this prevalent habit. At the assembly, put together by Bellmore-Merrick’s Community Parent Center, students heard from Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, who gave some sobering statistics, including that texting while driving is the equivalent of driving for five seconds with your eyes closed. She had the students close their eyes while she counted to five. Mepham students also heard from AT&T’s Regional Director of External Affairs Brandon Ray, who introduced a powerful documentary called “The Last Text.” In the documentary four groups of people personally devastated by a car accident caused by texting and driving shared their stories. In the film, those impacted by the habit held up cards with the offending text printed. “Teens must learn to ‘park their phone before they

CHILD SAFETY SERVICES - The Town of Hempstead’s Child Safety I.D. Program was recently held at the Wantagh Fire Department, located on Park Avenue. This program is unique in that the Town Clerk’s staff actually takes the child’s fingerprints and photograph FREE of charge. Anniversary Celebration Lumiere Ballet is celebrating its 20th anniversary since its founding in 1994. Featuring award winning students and professional dancers, the Nutcracker performances will be held at the Maguire Theater at SUNY College in Old Westbury, December 20th at 7 p.m. and December 22nd at 2 p.m. Lumiere Ballet’s Nutcracker follows the original Tchaikovsky, Petipa, Ivanov creation which was performed in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1892. The magic of the music, the waltzing snowflakes, and the land of the sweets will give joy and inspiration to children of all ages. Lumière Ballet encompasses a year round professional training program, summer intensive studies, and a performing company which presents fine works from theclassical, romantic, and the Lumiere Ballet’s original repertoire. The company performs throughout Long Islandand New York City. Svetlana Caton - Founder and Artistic CoDirector of Lumière Ballet. Her background and training is from the great heritage of the Russian Ballet. At the age of 12, her participation in the prestigious Concours de Danse in Paris brought a scholarship offer at the school of the Paris Opera as well as an invitation to study with the legendary stars of the Maryinsky Imperial Ballet; Olga Preobrajenska, Liubov Egorova and Mathilda Ksenschinska. She performed professionally in Europe and in the USA and

has been teaching for 30 years. Featuring her qualified students and professional dancers, she creates original story ballets, (Hansel and Gretel, Snow Maiden, the Little Prince) and stages the great Classics (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker and more) She is a graduate

of the Lycée Français de New York, has a BA in French and Russian Literature from Hunter College and completed post graduate studies in Theater and Film from LIU at C.W. Post College. Venti Petrov - Lumière Ballet Artistic Co-Director National and international award winner, Venti Petrov is a graduate of The National Choreographic Institute

of Sofia, Bulgaria. Upon his arrival in New York City, he continued his studies with Vladimir Dokoudovsky and became an American citizen in 2001. Venti Petrov worked with Suzanne Farrell (New York City Ballet) and Alexander Vetrov (Bolshoi Ballet). He has performed in over 20 states. PUMPKIN PATCH FUN - On October 23rd, students at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhardt Early Childhood Center were treated to a PTA-sponsored pumpkin patch. FIREMATIC AWARDS - The 2014 Town of Hempstead Firematic Service Award was recently presented to Ex-Chief John Loeber, Ex-Captain Thomas Brandon, Ex-Captain Robert MacKay, Ex-Captain John Licata and Firefighter/EMT Marcela Loeber of the Wantagh Fire Department. Thirty-one local first responders were honored with a Town of Hempstead Firematic Award for their courage and service to their communities and dedication to protecting neighbors. This group of firefighters from the Wantagh Fire Department has provided decades of service and dedication to various committees, units and rescue operations.
