Calming the Chaos is met with panic. There is no going with the flow, only uncertainty, anxiety and, ultimately, aggravation. The best we can all do is focus on the big picture, on those things that are truly important. As another of my favorite quotations states, Frame every socalled disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter? If the answer is no, move on. Treat those obstacles with the level of importance they deserve – minimal. Few things are worth the time and effort we spend stressing over them. Fine advice if you can follow it. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. So they say, anyway. Me, I tend to bottle all the day’s anxiety and frustration inside, carry it over into the next day (or week) and wait for it to eventually, inevitably, explode – usually at someone who has the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Seems healthy and productive, no? Enter: Yoga, that deep breathing, spirit cleansing, relaxation technique that so many swear by. Unfortunately, once a week doesn’t quite cut it when the madness engulfs all aspects of life. Best to take
that meditation practice back home with you, to work, sitting in traffic each morning and evening… everywhere. It’s guaranteed to come in handy. It’s amazing how an act so simple that we take for granted can, when given the chance, alleviate much of what ails us during the daily grind. Breathe in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…Breathe out...and repeat as needed. To infinity (and beyond). I would imagine everyone has stress in his/ her life. The difference lies in how each person handles it, or doesn’t, as the case may be. While some thrive on chaos, others shut down at even the slightest roadblock. Any deviation from the agreed-upon plan

Levittown’s Division Avenue High School held its first team Captains’ Breakfast on October 20 to recognize and honor the captains of fall sports teams and their leadership qualities and achievements. Snacking Healthy Levittown students attending Gardiners Avenue Elementary School rocked out to the music of the Brady Rymer Band in celebration of Healthy Snack Day. Sponsored by the PTA, the event was one of several lessons and activities associated with the District’s annual LEADD Week (Levittown Educators Against Destructive
Decisions) aimed to teach and reinforce lessons on healthy lifestyle habits. Prior to the assembly, physical education teachers Rondi Casey and Christine Paprocky taught a fitness unit, which contained physical activities relating to the five components of fitness including muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, cardio vascular fitness and body fat
composition. “These classes were designed to teach students how to support a healthy body,” Ms. Casey said. In addition to the live music, the PTA also cut up healthy fruits for the students to eat while watching the band perform songs about healthy lifestyles.

A cloudy, cool morning did not dampen the spirits of the community on a one-mile trek through the neighborhood during the district’s annual Levittown Education Against Destructive Decisions Walk and Community Fair on October 25th. This much-anticipated event was a culmination of school activities and assemblies that highlighted ways for students and staff to adopt healthy lifestyles. Student marshals
Cameron O’Keefe from Division Avenue High School and Dolan Jones from MacArthur High School accompanied Grand Marshal Jo Ann Medina in the parade, which was attended by members of the Board of Education and administration, community organizations and school representatives outfitted with colorful banners. After the parade, participants filed into the Levittown Memorial
Education Center gymnasium to hear speeches and introductions and to visit informational booths and games set up on the perimeter of the gym. District Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Keith Snyder told the community, “It is great to see so many faculty, students and community residents getting together to back this important program.”

Message from Justin “We are all in a state of denial and say to ourselves this cannot happen to me,” Veach told the students. “But we can all learn from Justin, because heroin deaths have tripled since 2010.” Veach’s son, Justin, was a musician and songwriter, who had recorded 14 songs by the age of 14. Veach admitted that he and his wife had missed the signs of heroin use by their son
and have paid the price since his death in 2008. During the emotional presentation, Veach encouraged the students to use their safety net of parents, teachers and friends during times of adversity and to know the warning signs of a friend’s or family member’s abuse of drugs. Most importantly, he stressed the importance of taking better care of oneself.

To take a stand against bullying, students collaborated with teachers, members of the PTA and fellow classmates by planting impatiens and yarrows around the school. Pumpkin Education second-grade students set out to measure the pumpkins with string and unifix cubes, recording their answers on graphs and worksheets. They predicted and counted the number of veins and predicted whether their pumpkins would sink or float in a tub of water. In addition, the students compared and contrasted
the properties and life cycles of apples and pumpkins, placing their answers on a Ven diagram, and describing pumpkins on a SMART Board and in journals. Of course, there were also pumpkin-related stories read in each of the classrooms, reminding students that Halloween is just around the corner.
EVERYONE IS SPECIAL - Forest Lake Elementary School kindergarten students in Wantagh are learning that each of us possesses qualities that make us special. During a grade-level activity, the students brought to school a rock, and were then instructed to paint it with a picture that exemplifies their personal qualities. Contract Extended At its business meeting on October 22nd, the East Meadow School District Board of Education voted unanimously to extend the contract of Interim Superintendent of Schools Leon J. In its search for a new superintendent, the Board has interviewed two firms to lead the district through the process. Upon selection of the finalist, activities and a timeline will be developed. “The decision to retain Mr. Campo will provide the Board the adequate time necessary to conduct a thorough search to find a candidate that is suitable to our district and community,” said Mr. Parisi.

Pride on Full Display The football field at W.T. Clarke High School was a sea of maroon on October 17th, as the Rams culminated the homecoming festivities with Clarke defeating Island Trees, 34-8. After the first half of the game, the parade traveled onto the field. The theme of the floats was Disney, with the movies “Monster’s Inc.,” “Up,” “Toy Story” and “The Incredibles” being featured. Students threw
candy into the crowd as visitors cheered them on. The grand marshals of the parade were alumni from the Class of 1965, who were decked out in Clarke jerseys to pay homage to their alma matter. The homecoming court, consisting of Duke Louis Zaino, Duchess Madison Normile, Count Joshua Dawson, Countess Dawanee Jean Francois, Prince Stephen Garvrielidis and Princess
Isabella Rivera and the newly crowned king Nick Normile and queen Holly Romeo were also presented to the crowd. As for the game, Aaron Dawson ran 11 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns to lead Clarke (4-2). Corey Rosenbloom added 90 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Dillon Abbatiello led the defense with seven tackles and an interception. WEEKEND TOURNAMENT - Congratulations to the MSC U12 Pythons on their first place finish in the Northport Cow Harbor Columbus Weekend Tournament. The fundraising efforts supported breast cancer research.

With a pep rally, outdoor festival and toasty bonfire, John F. Kennedy High School kicked off Homecoming in full force. Under the bright Friday night lights, the Cougars took on New Hyde Park, coming out victorious, 28-21. Prior to the game, various school clubs fundraised by selling homemade chocolates, snacks and even the opportunity to throw a pie at a teacher. “In the gym, the crowds
gathered to watch the girls’ varsity volleyball team, badminton team, and boys’ junior varsity volleyball team all play exciting matches,” Principal Lorraine Poppe said. Local bands took to the temporary stage and food trucks gathered in the parking lot behind the bleachers. A safely lit bonfire burned on the baseball field, under the direct supervision of Bellmore volunteer firefighters. This annual

camping, kayaking, going to Bounce and Island Rock. The youth decide what activity they are going to do and the adults supervise. They always seem to be the most excited about the community service activities. It really opens their eyes, hearts and minds to a different part of society. “We will only be influencing them during this portion of the lives, but hopefully it will help shape the individuals they become.” Crew 2162 is always looking for new members as well as organizations to work with. Narcan Training Concerned Wantagh School District administrators, students and community members assembled in the high school auditorium to learn how to administer Narcan, an intranasal delivery system that reverses opioid overdoses. The Wantagh 6-12 Association sponsored the event and Narcan kits were dispensed by Nassau County representatives, who were on hand to show support of the training program. The goal of the program was to not only increase awareness of
the fast-growing use and overdose of opioids, such as heroine, but to make available kits to potentially save the lives of drug users who overdose. Long Beach firefighter Darren Brennan told the audience that he has responded to a number of opioid overdose calls. “Drugs do not discriminate,” he said. When administered, Narcan puts the victim in immediate withdrawal by pushing opioids off of the affected brain receptors. David Hymowitz, director of education and training
for the Nassau County Department of Human Services, explained that Narcan can be administered through the nose, intravenously and intramuscularly. He also talked about the progression of an overdose and how to determine whether a person has overdosed or is simply drugged or drunk. Intranasal kits were then distributed and the audience was trained on how to assemble and utilize a dose of Narcan.

It was a day of celebration and anticipation as Forest Lake Elementary School students in Wantagh patiently waited for Principal Anthony Ciuffo to cut the bright yellow ribbon to mark the dedication of the school’s new playground. The much-anticipated event was attended by the district’s administration, Board trustees, staff, community residents and local representatives and marked the creation of a space that students and members of the community can enjoy. “I wish nothing but days and days filled with joy and
laughter as you socialize and continue to maintain a physically active lifestyle with the help of the new playground,” Mr. Ciuffo told the students. The playground was designed and built by American Recreational and paid for through funds received by Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads and Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves, as well as additional PTA funding. The playground was designed as an allinclusive experience in which children of various skill levels can enjoy and to meet the demands of every child. It combines low-level
manipulative items such as musical instruments, and other sensory based activities with higher and more challenging features like the rock wall and tall slides. There is also a lower rock wall, a smaller slide and a rocking cruiser. In addition to having fun, students can also develop key social behaviors that will benefit them throughout their lives. After the celebratory speeches, Mr. Ciuffo cut the ribbon and mascot Forrester made a maiden voyage down the slide to mark the official opening of the playground.

Ocean Field Trip Levittown students had a rare opportunity to explore the ocean firsthand and to study the creatures that inhabit the sandy bottom. Fifth-grade students at East Broadway Elementary School boarded the Yankee III at Captree State Park
for a trip into the Great South Bay. During their exploratio.n they collected samples of plankton from the ocean bottom and examined them under a microscope and handled fish, sponges, shells, crabs and larger

In” means committing to your studies, family and teammates regardless of potential failure. During his speech, Gian Paul related to the students with past memories of playing basketball in high school and for the NBA. He further explained that when you’re “All-In,” you put forth all your
effort regardless of the outcome. Concluding his speech, Gian Paul noted that he shared the same speech with the New York Giants, turning their season around to win Super Bowl forty-six. He also encouraged each student to declare their commitment to always being “All-In.”
