Adopt-a-Family With the holiday season approaching, the Levittown School District has initiated the Holiday Adopt-A-Family program. Clinton - who also has money, power and fame, offers us four more years of what we now have; continuing the affordable healthcare act, big government, big government spending and open borders for a global society. So...to anyone who is still undecided, I ask you - How? The two choices you have could not be more different! Don’t allow the onslaught of the mainstream media to confuse you. These activities will be executed by a variety of prominent stakeholders who have come together to form the Project Access Planning Committee. Together with researchers from the LIU-C.W. Post School of Social Work, the Committee will identify the target population for the study and then create two surveys: one for families and one for service providers. The data will be analyzed and a report generated on the findings. The Committee will develop a plan for disseminating the results to the public to increase knowledge as well as to inform advocacy efforts around mental health parity and network adequacy.

Back in the Spotlight By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms ﬂailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very ﬁrst dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

Third-graders at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District may not be able to travel the world this year, but their teddy bears can. The students recently began their Teddy Bears Around the World project, with their friends set to begin their global journeys. Each student colored a paper teddy bear, and gave it a name and hobbies. They then completed the teddy bear kit by including a passport and cover letter.

The kits will be given to someone they know who is traveling to another state or country, and that person is asked to mail a postcard to the school. Over the next several months, the hope is that each teddy bear will be passed along with the recipients sending a postcard and writing their location in the passport. The letters request that each kit, complete with a “stamped” passport, is mailed back to the school by June.

Teachers Judy Wakie and Danielle Kalinowski said that the project relates to the third grade social studies curriculum, which focuses on communities. As a postcard is received, the students learn about that place. The goal is to receive as many postcards as possible from across the world. “We really don’t know where the bears will end up,” Ms. Kalinowski said. “It’s a surprise.”

Enlightened Lesson Chatterton School students in the Merrick School District learned essential fire safety tips from community firefighters during this year’s annual fire prevention assembly. Gathered in the allpurpose room, local firefighters educated

K-3 students about the importance of fire detectors, how firefighters extinguish a fire and what do to if there is a fire. Following the assembly, students asked about fire equipment found in fire trucks, engines and ambulances during their tour of all three vehicles.

The students left the assembly well-informed about fire safety and were encouraged to discuss fire prevention with their families. Additionally, each class met Sparky the Fire Dog and posed for a picture with him.

In honor of Unity Day on Octobere 19th, students of Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District unified to take a stance against bullying by wearing their brightest orange and making new friends during the school’s Mix-It-Up Day. Prior to their lunch periods, students were

assigned a colored Popsicle stick that placed them at one of four tables - blue, green, red and yellow - where they ate lunch with new peers in their grade. On each table was a bag filled with questions created by members of the Respectful, Open-minded, Accepting, Responsible Students Club to help

students become better acquainted with their new friends. Sponsored by the PTA and the ROARS Club, all grades enjoyed pizza, fresh fruit and rainbow Italian ices while mixing it up and putting an end to bullying by making new friends.

Frank Carey High School on homecoming. After a fierce battle, the Pirates fell to the Seahawks, 36-33. Healthy Eating Levittown students attending Gardiners Avenue Elementary School in the Levittown School District rocked out to the music of the Brady Rymer Band in celebration of Healthy Snack Day. Sponsored by the PTA, the event was one of two yearly events aimed to teach and reinforce lessons on healthy lifestyle habits. Prior to the assembly,

physical education teachers Rondi Casey and Christine Paprocky taught a fitness unit, which contained physical activities relating to the five components of fitness including muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, cardio vascular fitness and body fat composition. “Healthy snacks are the right choice all the time and let you do what

you love,” Casey told the students. “Your body is a machine, and what you put into it is what makes it run.” In addition to the live music, the PTA also cut up healthy fruits for the students to eat while watching the band perform songs about healthy lifestyles.

The Wantagh School District congratulates Grace Sullivan and Thomas (TJ) Sullivan as the Class of 2017 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Director of Guidance Frank Muzio held a congratulatory meeting with the students and their parents, which included Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction John McNamara, Assistant Principal James Brown and guidance counselor Jacqueline Lennon. Grace is a National Merit Semifinalist and an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor. She is also vice president of the National Honor Society and president of the National Science Honor Society, as well as a member of the National Art Honor

Society. Other educational accolades include an Honors Award with the Long Island Science Congress, recipient of the Harvard Book Award, acceptance into Stony Brook University’s Simons Summer Research Program and a two-time recipient of the Daughters of the Revolution Essay Contest. Grace is also student government president, president of the Science Olympiad team, co-captain of the Rube Goldberg team and Key Club treasurer. Grace can be found on the track as a member of the crosscountry and winter and spring track teams as an All-Conference and All-County athlete. She also works with students with disabilities during her volunteer efforts with Rolling Thunder,

a program for disabled students that encourages them to become active through running. TJ is vice president of both the National Honor Society and National Science Honor Society, as well as the recipient of the University of Rochester Bausch and Lomb Award for Science. He was designated as an AP Scholar with Distinction and Nassau County Basketball A-2 Scholar-Athlete. Involved in school activities, TJ is a cellist with the symphonic and chamber orchestras and competes with the Mathletes, Rube Goldberg and Science Olympiad teams. He is also a founding member of the Wellness Club and member of International Outreach, as well as a volunteer with the Camp ANCHOR Program and Rolling Thunder.

Hearty Thanks The North Bellmore School District marked National School Lunch Week by acknowledging the hard work of the more than 20 people who work in its food services department. School Lunch Week, an initiative of the School Nutrition Association, was held from October 10th14th. This year’s theme was “Show Your Spirit.” In North Bellmore’s five elementary schools, signs were placed around the cafeterias and serving areas encouraging the students

to thank the staff. Each school has three or four kitchen staff members, including a head chef. “We just wanted the children to thank a lunch lady,” said Frank Romantich, the director of food services. “They are the unsung heroes behind the scenes in the North Bellmore School District. They have a very important job in the schools to feed these children.” Approximately half of the district’s students buy food at school, translating to more than 1,000

lunches served every day. A typical meal includes five components: a meat, grain, vegetable, fruit and milk or juice. Lunch menus are set a month at a time, and are made available to students and parents approximately halfway through the preceding month. Among the most popular items are brunch for lunch, which includes pancakes, waffles, egg and sausage sandwiches and French toast sticks, and traditional favorites like pizza and chicken nuggets.

Commended Students. These students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). In addition, MacArthur High School senior Jailyn

Lopez was congratulated for being selected as a 2016 National Hispanic Recognition Program Hispanic Scholar. Jailyn is among the 2.5 percent of the highest scoring Hispanic/Latino students nationwide who took the PSAT/NMSQT.

Senior Named Semifinalist The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that high school senior Grace Sullivan was named one of the nation’s 16,000 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists in the 62nd National Merit Scholarship Program competition. Grace will now continue

in the competition for one of 7,400 National Merit Scholarships, which altogether totals $34 million and which will be offered this coming spring. More than 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high schools across the country entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship

Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highestscoring entrants in each state.

Gifts of Appreciation In celebration of School Board Recognition Week, Levittown students, district unions, PTA representatives and local politicians honored the Levittown School District’s trustees for their voluntary service and commitment to students with tokens of appreciation during the October 19th board of education meeting. On behalf of the district, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald thanked the board for their hard work and long hours. “We cannot begin to thank you for everything you do for the students of the district,” she said. In addition to citations from local representatives, the board of education

received a special dinner prior to the meeting by the district’s bargaining units and a donation to the Levittown Food Pantry by the PTA Council. The elementary schools hung posters of appreciation in the boardroom, and Central Office staff gifted polo shirts designed with the district logo. Salk Middle School National Junior Honor Society officers presented hats, while Wisdom Lane Middle School class officers presented a donation in the name of the board to Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Division Avenue High School student government gave the trustees a personalized

blue padfolio and donated a brick in memoriam of trustee Frank Ward. MacArthur High School student government also gave each of the trustees a beach towel and a breast cancer awareness hat, as well as each trustee and Mr. Ward a brick on the General’s Walkway. On behalf of the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center, the National Technical Honor Society officers presented NTHS notebooks and sweet treats. After the gifts were presented and words of praise were given, the community was invited to a reception in the Panther Room.

Valuable Tips M e a d o w b r o o k Elementary School students in the East Meadow School District learned valuable fire safety tips from local firefighters during the school’s annual fire prevention program on October 14th. Gathered in the cafeteria,

the firefighters discussed the importance of having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their homes, establishing an escape route and creating a designated meeting location with family, as well as assisting firefighters when they arrive to the

scene. Following the presentation, students were able to examine the equipment on fire trucks and learn about the tools firefighters use to extinguish fires.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT - Patrick Blaskey recently completed his Eagle Scout Project at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter this past June. The shelter wanted 15 window boxes with beautiful flowers to spruce up the front of the building. During the October 20th public meeting of the Wantagh Board of Education, students, staff and members of the PTA and supporting district organizations honored the trustees for their volunteer service to the district and community. Board Recognition Week is an annual celebration

sponsored by the New York State School Boards Association, which honors the trustees’ commitment to public education. Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg explained that Board Recognition Night “celebrates the trustees leadership roles” and is a way to thank the

trustees for their “ongoing commitment to education” and the students of Wantagh. Board president Anthony Greco thanked the community and students for their support. “We serve for the love of the school district and its fine students,” he said.

Literacy Night Students and their families attended Bellmore School District’s annual Literacy Night at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center with fun-filled activities and a PTA book fair for avid readers. This year’s theme was “Fall into Reading” and incorporated a leadership theme, allowing sixthgrade students to take a leadership role by greeting families and assisting with various activities. Assistant Superintendent

for Instruction Dr. Joanne Dacek explained that the evening’s goal was to promote student leadership as well as literacy. “Not only did Literacy Night promote reading, it brought a community of learners together and allowed the older students to shine.” There were ample opportunities to celebrate the written word. FLES teacher Señora Lorena Cuttitta read stories aloud in Spanish, while teachers and administrators read

stories aloud and acted out the parts during the Readers’ Theatre. There was a Star SingA-Long of the district’s character education songs and a station where parents and students could work together to create a family mission statement. Students also created colorful origami star bookmarks and star necklaces and had the opportunity to take a selfie with the district’s new mascot, Stellar.

Inspiring Young Artists object that they wanted, including cornstalks, flowers, vegetables and butterflies. Ms. Skelly and firstgrade teacher Robin Obey started the garden five years ago to serve as an outdoor classroom. The students and teachers have enjoyed the “garden to table” experience during schoolwide activities such as salad day and stone soup day. This year, rutabagas, turnips, lima beans and garlic are growing in the garden. “It is a wonderful

educational tool for the students and their teachers because it provides handson learning experiences across curricula areas including science, math, English Language Arts and the visual arts,” said Principal Eileen Speidel. “The students enjoy an array of activities in the garden such as read alouds, writer’s workshop and drawing in their sketch books. It also gives them an understanding as to where food comes from.”

The Wellington C. Mepham High School varsity kickline team in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently hosted their annual fall clinic for local children. More than 100 children,

ages 5-13, participated in the clinic where they learned dance technique and a routine that incorporated jazz, hip-hop, pom and kick. The team will host a Winter Clinic on Saturday, December 10th, at

Brookside. The team begins their local competitions on January 8th and will travel to Orlando, Florida to compete at the NDA National Dance competition for the fifth time in March.

It is also used for a variety of educational purposes, including art. On a warm and sunny October afternoon, art teacher Jill Skelly brought second-grade students to the garden and had them draw. The junior class at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District hosted a pancake breakfast fundraiser to help a younger member of the community. Short Stacks for a Tall

Cause was held on October 16th to benefit the family of a 12 year-old Merrick boy fighting a rare form of cancer. Nearly $1,500 was raised for Jake Lonigro and his family. Jake has an older sibling that attends

Kennedy. “The whole event and planning for it has been the most rewarding outside of the classroom experience for me,” said social studies teacher Kristy Faulkner.

Taste of Broadway Students interested in participating in Grand Avenue Middle School’s Drama Club in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District were invited to attend a workshop on October 20th at the school with Broadway performer Leo Ash Evens. Evens, who was recently in “Shuffle Along,” is also a coach for aspiring performers heading into a performing arts college program. Over the summer, he presented at

a workshop attended by Rebecca Levy, the club’s director. “After hearing him speak at the event, I knew my students would enjoy and benefit from his insight,” said Levy. He shared audition tales and advice with the middle school students as they asked questions about how to deal with disappointment and calm nerves, realities for all performers. Some students even performed for Evens and received feedback on

their performances. “Any opportunity for our students to work with professionals in the performing industry is a valuable experience,” said Cheryl Fontana, district director of the fine and performing arts. The students were thrilled for the chance to meet and interact with a theater professional. “This made my life,” said eighth-grader Kacie McKeever.

September and October have been busy months at the Levittown Historical Society and Museum. The September meeting featured Bob Doxsee, famous for his family’s clam juice. Bob Doxsee gave a wonderful presentation on the fishing industry starting from the 1800s. It has been in his family for generations, started in 1865. He had beautiful, vintage photographs of deckhands and crews working working on the water. He demonstrated how the clamming, fishing and processing were done. During the National Forum on Character Education held in Washington, D.C. on October 13th-14th, Character.org, formerly known as the Character Education Partnership, presented the Salk Middle School’s faculty in Levittown with the National School of Character Award and the Best Practice Award. The National School of Character Award recognized that Salk Middle School demonstrated that character education has had a positive impact on academics, student behavior and school climate. The R.I.S.E Program, an in-house character education program based on the tenets of respect, stands for respect, integrity,

safety/staying healthy and empathy and has evolved over the past decade. Assistant Principal Patrick Mulligan, chairman of the school’s R.I.S.E. Committee, explained that prior to receiving the national status, the school was named a New York State School of Character in May 2016. Mulligan said the program teaches students to embrace each other’s differences and to treat others with kindness. “The program should not be confused with an anti-bullying program,” he stated. “Instead, it is a program that teaches students the right way to behave and treat others.” The Best Practice Award recognizes the school’s implementation of the Challenger League, which

consists of secondary-level students from the district’s ADA (autistic) program and others with physical disabilities who compete in athletic competitions against districts with a similar program. Jeff Aiello, Levittown Challenger League coordinator, said the league is not only about the competition, but about the community coming together to support these students.” Principal John Zampaglione said Character.org is looking to use Salk Middle School’s program to implement into schools across the country. “We were not looking for the recognition,” he said. “But this has been such a great honor for all of the faculty and students.”

Fishing on LI During a special presentation by I Fish New York representatives Bob McCormack and Francis McParland, Summit Lane fifth-grade students in Levittown learned about the varieties of fish that lurk within the salt and fresh waters on Long Island.

The program, sponsored by the Department of Environmental Conservation, helped prepare the students for a boat trip on the Yankee III out of Captree State Park. The students learned the differences between the terms “predator” and “prey” and the fish that

are classified under these categories. They also learned facts about the large-mouth bass, sunfish, striped sea bass (striper), fluke and sea robin and the lateral line organ that assists in their sensing prey in the open waters.

curriculum about native peoples. Presenter Richie Cornacchio discussed the geographical location of the Iroquois, their methods of survival, and the tools utilized for agriculture.

In addition, the students explored Native American artifacts, walked through a replicated longhouse and tried their hands at using a pestle and mortar to grind corn.
