As we usher in November, we tend to take stock of the year as a whole - where it stands, those goals we had intended to achieve along the way, and how the two correlate. Life is a constant evaluation in that way. While the month may be centered around the beginning of the holiday season, the concept of Thanksgiving is one that can be applied throughout the year. Perhaps this is why it is one of my least favorite holidays, simply for the fact that it seems short-sighted to designate one particular day to “be thankful.” What about the other 364? It shouldn’t take a turkey dinner and wallto-wall football games to gain that needed perspective. Before the commercialism of the “season of giving” took over, it was simply an opportunity to spend time

with family and friends, to gather over food and reminisce, and to make new memories along the way. Looking through old photo albums, the one thing that resonates through the years is the sense of togetherness that always existed; so strong you can practically see it reverberating off the pages. This is a feeling that one can only hope to recapture with each passing year. All the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning, the decorating, the wrapping… what is it for, if not that moment when everyone comes together to enjoy one another’s company. It’s the little things that matter - a special greeting card with a thoughtful inscription, remembering someone’s favorite type of dessert, a lovingly wrapped gift topped with a beautiful bow. The rest, as they say, is

merely window dressing. While the year may be drawing to a close, there is still plenty of time to refocus on those goals we may have allowed to slip through the cracks. Days and months and years are but markers of time; the moment itself is what matters. The only deadlines we should pay mind to are those we set for ourselves. The plan is always evolving, and so, too, must we. Don’t think of it as two months left to achieve a particular task; or two months left until the clock resets and we can put 2017 behind us for good - neither approach serves us today, now. MAUREEN’S HAVEN!

Maureen’s Haven is a local organization that helps homeless men and women around Long Island. This program brings a variety of organizations and houses of worship together to help meet the needs of the homeless during the cold winter months, which is known as their Emergency Shelter Program, starting on November 1st and running through March 1st.

The host facilities and supporting organizations provide not just a place for the homeless to sleep, but a nutritious dinner, breakfast and a packed meal to go. They provide support by embracing the values of human dignity, respect, service, compassion, teamwork, diversity and love. Recognizing the need for consistent support and services for the homeless in the region, Maureen’s Haven opened a day center in Riverhead to provide respite from the cold and year-round services for this vulnerable and growing population. The day center is the first of its kind in Suffolk County. A variety of programs are offered throughout the year. In addition to meeting their immediate needs, Maureen’s Haven strives to place individuals in supportive housing, which provides consistent shelter and case management. Over the past three years, Maureen’s Haven has placed over 30 individuals in housing, provided counseling and assistance with job search and placement, and offered

a continuum of care that has helped individuals in rebuilding their lives. After meeting recently with Maryann, the Executive Director of this wonderfully compassionate organization, and taking a tour of their day center, I came away with a much better understanding of who they are and what they do. The warm sincerity I felt while hearing her speak about the heart of this organization and experiencing what it’s like to be at their day center was quite emotional and aweinspiring. Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. As far as donations, they need the following: latex gloves, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, coffee/tea keurig pods, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and of course monetary donations. They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church.

Congratulations to Karen Jackson who received the 2017 Outstanding Businessperson of the Year award. She was honored at the NCCC Outstanding Businessperson of the Year Awards & Legislative Breakfast at the Crest Hollow Country Club on October 20th. Karen was selected by members of the Levittown Chamber of Commerce to receive this award. Karen Jackson is the owner of The UPS Store, Levittown. They offer a lot more than just shipping services. She is an active member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Wantagh Fire Dept. and serves as a deacon as well as being on several committees at the Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church.

In celebration of School Board Recognition Week, Levittown students, district unions, PTA representatives and local politicians honored the Levittown School District’s trustees for their voluntary service and commitment to students with tokens of appreciation during the October 18th meeting of the board of education. A s s i s t a n t Superintendent for Instruction Todd Winch thanked the trustees for their hard work and long hours. “We thank you for your commitment to the district’s children and the long hours spent helping students learn,” he said. In addition to citations from local representatives, the board of education received a special dinner prior to the meeting by the district’s bargaining units and a donation to the Levittown Food Pantry by the PTA Council. The elementary schools hung posters of appreciation in the boardroom and the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center’s Key Club members presented gift certificates for services, a graphic t-shirt and molded chocolate in the shape of keys to symbolize the trustees’ being “key” to the community. The Division Avenue High School student council gifted DAHS glassware and a donation to the Levittown New York to Levittown Puerto Rico relief effort, while MacArthur High School’s student government

Standing Up to Bullying situations. Situations involving exclusion, cyberbullying and physical bullying, as well as how to report bullying, were all covered in an entertaining, uplifting and unifying assembly. At the conclusion of the program, students recited a pledge to report bullying whenever they see it. A written anti-bullying pledge was also circulated throughout the school for every student to sign. The

pledge will be displayed on posters in the building to serve as visual reminder of the lessons learned and to reinforce that every individual, no matter how big or small, has the power to stand up to bullying. Leaders are Readers Students and their families gathered at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center to participate in the Bellmore School District’s second annual Literacy Night on October 19th. This year’s theme, “Leaders are Readers,” stressed that leaders read every day and allowed sixthgrade students to take a leadership role in greeting families and facilitating activities. Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Joanne

Dacek said, “Our entire community of learners came together to make this night a wonderful celebration of leadership and literacy.” There were ample opportunities to celebrate the written word. Students were led in musical literary activities, engaged in a scavenger hunt to identify pictures of popular storybook characters, and wrote book reviews on Chromebooks and iPads. They played speed versions of literacy-boosting board

games such as Boggle, Scrabble Junior, Apples to Apples and Bananagrams and created personalized bookmarks for future reading. Students also took photos with mascot, Stellar, and attended the Readers Theater, where teachers and administrators read aloud and acted out various stories. There was also a book fair, where students stocked up on books for additional reading opportunities.

Imagining a Solution At Wantagh Elementary School, fifth-grade students in Traci Weiss’ class thought like engineers to create a new technology for a defined problem. The activity took place during the school’s science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics class where students utilized imagination, communication and collaboration skills to fix individual problems such as pencils falling off desks, patching holes in clothing, preventing cuts while

searching for a utensil and more. “You must first ask yourself what problem I can solve,” STEAM teacher Kaitlin Dayton told the students. “Then you must imagine and brainstorm a solution.” The students were separated into groups and worked with their partners to make a prototype of a new technology while utilizing limited resources. They were required to first draw a preliminary sketch and any alterations to the prototype, which taught

the students that plans can change. The resulting prototypes included pencil holders that attached to desks, a clear waterproof sock for swimming, a knife holder for a utensil drawer to prevent cuts, a holder for important items to prevent them from being stolen, a DIY wallet, a nail holder to prevent finger smashing and multi-use patches. “There is no limit to the students’ imagination,” Ms. Dayton said. “These students are the engineers of tomorrow.”

Each group had to present its selection and give supporting reasons based on evidence from the information they were provided. The remainder of the digital citizenship unit, which continues over the next few months, will focus on personal branding. Sixth-graders will decide who they are and what they stand for, and select descriptive words for themselves. They will learn how core values are a part of branding. During the final part of the lesson, each student will design a personal logo and make it on a 3-D printer. Ms. Stack said the purpose of the personal branding project is to

show students how their image is impacted by the information and pictures they post on the internet, as well as what other people post about them. It is all part of their digital footprint. She explained that while sixth-graders have had internet safety workshops in the past, this is the first year it is a series of classes. Approximately 300 students will benefit from the lessons. “Our sixth-graders are at a pivotal point because they are starting to be allowed more access to the internet,” Ms. Stack said. “This is their world and they are becoming fully immersed in social media. They need to understand that their digital footprint is a big deal and it will stick with them.”

Sixth-graders in the North Bellmore School District participated in an “unplugged” lesson on internet safety as they began a digital citizenship unit. Instructional technology specialists Michael Bevilacqua and Jenna Stack visited classes at all five elementary schools to talk to students about their digital footprints. During the first lesson, students participated in a scenario in which they had to select the host for a new teenage-themed game show. They reviewed printouts of the personal statements written by two fictitious candidates, along with each person’s social media profile and other information about them on the internet. General Douglas MacArthur High School junior Jordan Waitkus recently planted six trees and bushes over the course of a two-day period along the walkway of the Levittown Memorial Education Center as part of his Eagle Scout service project. Through his project, Waitkus honored Eagle Scouts that graduated from Division Avenue, Levittown Memorial and MacArthur high schools by adding two pedestals displaying the names and troop numbers

of the scouts. Waitkus has been a member of the Boy Scouts of America since the age of six and is currently part of Troop 330. He has moved through the ranks over the years from Cub Scout to Boy Scout, volunteering throughout his membership and earning various badges. Boy Scouts of America recognizes young people as Eagle Scouts once they fulfill the proper requirements. This includes working in the areas of leadership, service

Waitkus wanted to do something special for the Levittown community and brainstormed with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald on a service project. Together, they came up with the idea of beautifying the walkway of the Levittown Memorial Education Center and celebrating the Eagle Scouts from Levittown. “It was a lot of work but as soon as it started coming together, it came out really well,” said Waitkus. “I’m proud of myself.” Waitkus is committed to making sure that the list is updated with any Eagle Scout that is not currently represented. were selected to participate in this program that is aimed at strengthening the state’s STEAM education program. The Master Teacher Program is currently made up of secondary school teachers and educators who have been found to be among the highest performing in the areas

of science, technology, engineering and math. Selected teachers will receive annual stipends over their four-year participation in the program. They will also get peer mentoring and professional development opportunities, as well as attend regional meetings with their peers.

School Board Recognition community awareness and understanding about the crucial role of board members within the school district. “Being a school board member can, at times, be a thankless job,” said Superintendent of Schools John C. McNamara. “The board puts in countless hours to benefit our students and we thank them for their service and commitment to students.” Upon opening the meeting, Cub Scout Pack 96 led the Pledge of

Allegiance. In addition, student liaisons Annie Browne and Olivia Zukowski presented, on behalf of all five schools, a photographic college highlighting the district’s programs. The collage was created by advanced digital arts teacher Keith Hunter and will be hung in the board conference room. “Thank you for your efforts, sacrificing your time and everything that you have done for our schools,” the liaisons said.

Magic of Fitness Parkway Elementary School students in the East Meadow School District learned the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle during a “bFit” assembly featuring magician Brian Richards. Mr. Richards used magic, comedy and audience participation to excite students about eating nutritious foods

and exercising at least 60 minutes every day. He explained to students how their bodies need to “bFueled” with healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, as well as plenty of water. He also told students that they need to “bActive” by completing 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise

every day. He encouraged students to “bCreative” by incorporating five different types of fruits and vegetables into their diet and exercising while watching TV or playing video games. Concluding the show, Mr. Richards led the group in a choreographed dance to demonstrate how easy it is to exercise.

Creepy crawlers and flying bats are typically on the minds of students in the Wantagh School District during the Halloween season. Mandalay Elementary School students, however, took an educational approach to the study of these traditional spooky critters.

Using their Chromebook computers, kindergarten students in Christine Kopp’s class first read Janell Cannon’s “Stellaluna” from the StorylineOnline site and then illustrated their favorite part of the story. The students also cut out bat patterns and glued on four researched facts about these creatures.

In addition, students designed and created spider webs using cups, pipe cleaners, paper and straws. Carried over from a recent science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics lesson, the goal was for students to design a web strong enough to hold their spiders.
