Emotional Resilience “Don’t promise when you’re happy, don’t reply when you’re angry, and don’t decide when you’re sad.” - Ziad K. Abdelnour What does it mean to be resilient? For some, it’s the idea of bouncing back quickly after adversity. For others, it is the ability to remain stoic. Some see it as simply ones’ ability to face another day. My own definition may be counter-intuitive to some, but it is the courage to feel negative emotions, allowing the discomfort to effect you, grabbing the kernels of wisdom a negative experience brings, and then embarking upon the healing process and honoring whatever form it takes. I think it is a gross human misconception that to cry, to punch a pillow, to feel hopeless, to declare that the world is coming to an end, or any other things you need to do in the midst of grief or profound disappointment, somehow makes you not emotionally resilient. People have always observed me to be great at “bouncing back.”

What they don’t see is that I took the time I needed to be a complete mess! Yes, I said it. I take the time I need to honor the negative emotions, to give them their chance to have a field day. Then I dust myself off and move forward, feeling cleansed and renewed. It’s all part of the process. It’s a myth that strong people don’t cry. Can we put that one to bed right now, please? Those heavier, denser emotions are part of the learning experience, and they are necessary. With that being said, so is stacking the deck in your favor toward healing. Below is my cheat sheet for making it through tough, upsetting or scary times: Take a moment to STOP, look around and assess your immediate surroundings. Ask yourself if you are in any danger right in that moment. Chances are, the answer is no. Next, focus on 5 things you see around you. Then focus on 3 things you can feel around you (tactile). Third, focus on one thing you can smell. Fourth, focus on one thing you can hear.

Play classical or jazz music. I find that both of these genres of music have a soothing effect on the emotional part of the brain. Picture yourself as a character in a movie. The people around you are the supporting players. Think of the crisis before you as the script (the plot), and you as delivering the ultimate Oscarworthy performance. After all, life is a grand illusion anyway, and it is a safe bet to assume that you have starred in many other dramas, as well as some great comedies, in your lifetime. Go do something you enjoy. No matter how despondent you may feel, tell yourself you are going to take a short break from being “you,” and simply go do something enjoyable. Take a run, ride a bike, eat an ice cream cone, watch a funny movie, bake cookies, call an old friend, do something romantic with a significant other. I promise you, your problems can wait an hour. Lastly, when you do bounce back, pay it forward and use that newfound wisdom to help someone else.

With over-development becoming a very real concern in Nassau County, the benefit of mature trees cannot be diminished. Trees produce oxygen, intercept airborne particulates, and reduce smog, enhancing a community’s respiratory health. Mature trees contribute to the protection of groundwater quality by removing nitrogen-based fertilizers from the groundwater before the groundwater can leach such nutrients to local water bodies and aquifers. The removal of trees should not be a part of an overall plan to protect communities from extreme storms when trees actually sequester carbon (CO2), reducing the overall concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere - reducing the chances of more storms due to climate change. Before a project of this magnitude is undertaken, a full environmental impact study must be conducted. Such study must investigate how removing mature trees from the wall of a 100 plus years-old dam will impact the structural integrity of the dam; bird, fish and all wildlife of this region; the local ecology; groundwater and waterways and our surrounding communities. Again, there is a lack of study into these impacts. CAWS joins the Citizens Advisory Committee’s request for a comprehensive environmental impact study of the proposed Living With The Bay project, including specifically the impact of removing 2,500 trees from, or near, the dam’s wall.

History with U.S. Army Reservist On October 11th, Tara Moore’s This Day in History class in Grand Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District was visited by Ms. A. Marcanotos, a U.S. Army reservist, and mother of eighth-grade student Sabrina Singh.

“She came to talk about her experience being in the U.S. Army, as both a current reservist and as a veteran of the war in Iraq,” explained Moore. “Her visit culminated the unit about this day in history, Nov. 11, which was the end of combat during World

War I and later became acknowledged as Veterans Day.” Students also participated in a schoolwide poster contest to raise awareness about Veterans Day and to thank veterans for their service.

Halloween Safety As children throughout our communities prepare for Halloween, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson advise parents, drivers and trick-ortreaters to take some basic precautions to ensure a safe outing. Trick-ortreaters are especially at risk for pedestrian injury as they are more likely to cross streets in the middle of the block rather than at corners or crosswalks. As the increase in pedestrian traffic may cause distractions, Supervisor Saladino and Councilwoman Johnson urge drivers to be on alert, proceed slowly through local streets and obey all traffic signs and signals. Parents with small children and teens walking door-to-door should travel up one side of the street

and down the other, making sure to cross at the corner or crosswalk. Trick-or-Treating in groups in well-lit neighborhoods will increase visibility and walking on the sidewalk, rather than cutting across yards or driveways, will mean less chance of stumbling and falling. Children should never go inside the home of a stranger, but rather accept treats outside the door. Currently in their fourth year of mindfulness instruction, Lee Road Elementary School in the Levittown Public School District, officially opened their new Mindfulness Room, on October 2nd, to help students and staff channel their emotions and observe their feelings. The room was the brainchild of third grade teacher Melanie Anderson, the chairperson of Lee Road’s Mindfulness Committee, graduate of the Mindful Schools, “Mindful Teacher” certification program and the adviser of the school’s Mindfulness Club. The room will be used for some Mindfulness Club

sessions and for students who are in need of a few moments of calm. It will be utilized before, during, and after school, for both students and staff. Central administrators including Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Todd Winch, Board of Education President Peggy Marenghi, Principal Anthony Goss, PTA members, Mindfulness Club students and Mindfulness Committee members, were present for the opening ceremony. Teacher, Melanie Anderson, will continue to support the school’s mindfulness endeavors by teaching a 10week Introduction to Mindfulness course through the Levittown Teachers’ Center, available to anyone in the Levittown Public Schools.

Health Science Competition for High School Students Dr. Michael Brisman of Neurological Surgery, P.C., one of the New York Metro region’s premier neurosurgical groups with several locations on Long Island (including Bethpage), and Dr. Ray Ann Havasy, Executive Director of the Center for Science Teaching and Learning, have announced the creation and launch of the Neurological Surgery, P.C. Health Science Competition. This competition is the first of its kind in the United States, and is open to all High School students who attend school in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. There is a registration fee for students to enter the competition, allowing them to present projects to judges in May 2019. For competition rules

and to enter, students must apply and provide information about their project concepts to www. CSTL.org/nspc/. The competition is expected to attract a large number of entries, so student teams are encouraged to submit applications early. All Nassau and Suffolk County high school principals, science teachers and guidance counselors are asked to share this information with students. “The world of healthcare and medical sciences is rapidly evolving and we are seeing advances occurring every day. For this reason, it is critical that we as members of the medical profession do our part to inspire and motivate young people to pursue careers in health and science. The competition allows

students to work alone, but encourages them to work as part of a team. Students are tasked with creating a presentation that they will showcase at the competition to be held on Long Island in May 2019. Projects must be focused on human health science and finding solutions to health related issues. Students will compete for $80,000 in awards, that will go to the top teams. A Calming Space For Students

Digging Into Fall Clean Up Throughout two weeks in October, third, fourth, and fifth-grade students at Meadowbrook Elementary School, in the East Meadow School District, have been helping to tidy up the garden in front of the school building. Led by Assistant Principal, Gail Gallucci,

students were tasked with digging out weeds and other materials in the garden areas at the front of the school building. The process helped to showcase the flowers and trees that have been planted in front of the building, while also teaching students about the responsibility of

grooming a garden. Each of the three grades came together during three sessions to tackle different areas of cleaning up. The cleanup lesson also was intended to help beautify the entrance of the building ahead of the school’s fall festival on October 20th.

Broadway Supports LIHSA

This is the fourth year that Broadway stars have come together to support LIHSA, Long Island’s only performing arts high school program that offers world-class training and preparation for students who are interested in exploring and pursuing careers in the arts. Last year’s show was a sell-out! “It is deeply touching for these talented Broadway entertainers to donate their time to put together an unprecedented performance to support LIHSA,” said Nassau BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Robert R. Dillon. “The evening will not only help raise awareness of our stellar arts programs, it will also

provide our current and future LIHSA students the opportunity to see how successful they can become!” For forty-five years, LIHSA has been a powerhouse for the development of Long Island’s creative and cultural sector, offering programs in Theatre, Dance, Music, Special Effects, Digital Media, Fine Arts and Film. LIHSA challenges current thinking and practice while producing graduates who are innovators and leaders. The school’s alumni are working all over the world on stage, on screen, behind the scenes and leading major events and organizations. Broadway Supports LIHSA is being co-produced and co-directed by Jerome Vivona, a Broadway veteran and current Artistic Director of the American Theater Dance Workshop in Mineola, NY; and Stephen DeAngelis, renowned Casting Director and Producer of over 300 different Broadway concerts, at venues in

New York and across the United States. DeAngelis has recently been named as Producing Artistic Director of the new Pocono Center for the Arts. This team has been working with the Campaign for LIHSA, which is affiliated with the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation. The campaign was created over three years ago to help raise funds and awareness of LIHSA. Fire Safety Lessons

In recognition of National Fire Safety Awareness Week, members of the Merrick Fire Department conducted a hands-on lesson with students at Chatterton Elementary School in Merrick. Fire department members gave demonstrations on the proper use of Firematics gear and protective

clothing as well as the proper technique for exiting a fire situation safely. Chatterton students were also treated to a closeup look at some of the department’s trucks and learned how the truck’s apparatus is used to save lives. Department members also advised students to remind their parents to check their home smoke

detectors regularly and identify a safe outdoor meeting place in the event of an evacuation. The younger grade level students received fire hats to take home with them. Some even witnessed the F.D. members spring into action, responding to an emergency call shortly after wrapping up their presentation.

Team Captains Earn Praise Division Avenue High School recently hosted their first Captain’s Breakfast of the 20182019 school year to honor the captains of Division Avenue’s fall varsity teams. The student-athletes arrived in the school cafeteria at 7 a.m. where they were greeted by building administrators and treated to a delicious breakfast.

Principal John Coscia welcomed the students and thanked them for their leadership both on and off of the field. Each student received certificates for their commitment and service to Division Avenue High School. The captains of the school’s soccer, football, cheer and kickline teams also received a symbolic piece of blue ribbon from the school’s

recent ribbon cutting ceremony, unveiling the new turf football field. The students were celebrated not just because of their exceptional athletic abilities, but because they embody the character that is expected of ambassadors of Division Avenue High School. The next Captain’s Breakfast will be held in the winter.

Seaford’s Taekwondo Champ Michael Lantino, 15, of Seaford, NY, became a USA National Team Member in the Black Belt 15 to 17 year old division, for both the Amateur Athletic Union and American Teakwondo Union. The AAU battle for the team position was fierce, as Michael had to fight six in a row against the best in the country to secure his team position. Lantino will be representing the United States in two international

competitions within the next year. Lantino has been practicing Taekwondo since he was four years old. His training sessions are four to six hours per day, and he trains a minimum of six days per week. Lantino’s Taekwondo Masters, Andrew H.J. Oh and Soon Kwon Kang, of Champions Martial Arts (with locations in Amityville, Massapqua, Bellmore, East Meadow, Wantagh and Copiague)

had a great deal to do with his success. Lantino has been able to maintain a 90 and above average in school despite his long martial arts training hours. Besides the hours of training locally, he also attends National Team training camp in Texas. His upcoming agenda includes competitions in Las Vegas, Nevada, and in Germany. More international competitions will be announced later this year.

New Theatre Instructor for LIHSA

Erik Chocianowski is not new to Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). Having served as a visiting lecturer at the school for the past three years, he now takes a full-time position on the faculty, bringing his educational and professional expertise to the students in the theater department. As a visiting lecturer, Mr. Chocianowski taught scenic design, an important element of technical theater. His students learned the basics of design, drawing, 3D modeling techniques and stage terminology. As a culmination to their studies, students helped to build full sized set pieces for the various productions at LIHSA. In his new position, Mr. Chocianowski will teach a variety of topics, from special effects makeup, to puppetry, to lighting mechanics and EDUCATORS OF EXCELLENCE - English chairperson Mary Donnelly with teachers design. attended. “Ms. Levy serves as a model educator for our district and a leader among her peers,” said Donnelly. “In 2017, Ms. Levy shared her time and talents by contributing to the Humanities 7 curriculum writing project. Town of Hempstead Tax Proposal Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney, along with Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilmen Bruce Blakeman, Ed Ambrosino, Anthony D’Esposito, Dennis Dunne and Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin, has announced that she will propose a 2019 Hempstead Town Budget that will slash taxes by over 4.2 percent, compared to the Supervisor’s proposed budget. The 2019 budget proposed by King Sweeney and her colleagues will reduce property taxes by approximately $11.6 million, or 4.2 percent, compared to the Supervisor’s tax levy proposal for 2019. The 2019 budget that they are putting forth will reduce municipal spending, included in the Supervisor’s 2019 Proposed Budget by $11.6 million or 2.6 percent. Among the “taxpayerfriendly” budget cuts included in the Council

Members’ plan is the elimination of “vacant positions” in the town budget. Moreover, the town will no longer budget full-year funding for positions that are vacant at the start of the 2019 calendar year. And, positions which are anticipated to become vacant during the year will be reflected through prorated cost savings. This area alone constitutes $9 million in cost savings. At the same time as the Council Members are axing taxes and spending in their 2019 proposal, their spending blueprint will add $8 million to town reserves, insulating the town from unanticipated budget costs, an economic downturn and prospective revenue variances. In concert with the defunding of vacant employee positions from the budget, King Sweeney announced that she is calling for a new Taxpayer Protection Plan for “employee payouts,” to

This was followed by the anticipated announcement of the homecoming king and queen. The homecoming court, dressed in their best gowns and suits, were welcomed onto the field. Seniors Ryan DeRosa and Leila Sayan were crowned king and queen, respectively, to the delight of their peers. Other nominees included Victoria Cuttone, Analisa Giannone, Debbie Jaffe, Ryan Kochie, Dean Lanza, Katerina Liangus, Jeffrey Liu and Jake Wiscovitch.
