The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they are bringing the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Each event has been going great, with up to hundreds of guests each night! The remaining events will run on October 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. On Halloween, their event will be kid-friendly! There will be no actors and walk through tours of their haunted house will be given. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a nonprofit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, nonmedical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. David Frank Is Sole Author David Frank, a senior at John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, was listed as the sole author of a research project recently published in the “International Journal of Hospitality Management.” Frank is the first student at Kennedy to have received the honor of a sole publication.
His project, “To Gift or Not to Gift: How Providing a Memento Affects a Restaurant Magician’s Tips,” examines the psychology behind tipping behavior and the generalizability of a published tip enhancing technique that is based on the “norm of reciprocity” — the idea that we feel a social obligation to repay what other people have
given us. As a professional magician, Frank collected data for his study by performing magic at a local restaurant. Tipping “is an important source of income for many service workers, who would benefit from a better understanding of things they can do to increase their customers’ ‘tips,’” according to his abstract. His findings indicate
that a magician receives more frequent and larger tips when he provides customers with a souvenir playing card. Specifically, it provides evidence that the aforementioned effects of giving gifts on tipping are reliable and that they generalize to a wide array of service contexts. A crystal clear fall afternoon was the backdrop for W.T. Clarke High School’s homecoming festivities held on Oct. 12. Prior to the game against the Locust Valley Falcons, Netflix-themed floats were led down Stewart to Washington avenues with the marching band and Grand Marshalls Hon. Arthur M. Diamond and Dr. Thomas Vassel in tow. This is the first time the high school has held a homecoming parade in recent memory, and the community came out in force to show their support. The festivities concluded on the steps of the high school, where the marching band and flag corps continued to perform to the delight of the community. Prior to the muchanticipated football game, the district held its biannual hall of fame. Celebrated were New York State Supreme Court Justice Arthur M. Diamond (Class of 1970) and Carman Drugs owner Dr. Thomas Vassel (Class of 1993). Both were recognized for having demonstrated outstanding ability, leadership, character and dedication and for serving as an inspiration to the W. T. Clarke High School community. The homecoming game commenced with the singing

In addition to a stellar performance by the marching band and stunts by the cheerleaders, the homecoming royal court was announced and included King George Pagiatis and Queen Isabella Posillico, Prince Kevin Henning and Princess Serenity Herdes, Count Brian Themistocle and Countess Maya Abate, and Duke David Bouchra and Duchess Molly Grassini. The Rams lived up to their name and reputation with a 34-22 victory over the Falcons.

6 Tricks For Storing Halloween Treats Halloween is a favorite day for many children and even a number of adults. Halloween offers revelers the opportunity to dress up in costume, play tricks on unsuspecting individuals and cap off the day with treasure troves of candy. Approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy is sold each year in the United States. Around 90 million pounds of that is chocolate. The National Retail Foundation notes that more than two billion dollars is spent on candy come Halloween. But most of that candy will never be eaten. Many households take in more candy than they know what to do with on Halloween. Couple that with any leftover candy that may not have been grabbed by trick-or-treaters, and that’s quite a bounty of lollipops, chocolate bars, candy corn and taffy to manage. Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve treats long after Halloween has come and gone. 1. Go nutty first. Nuts and oils will not last as
long as some other candy ingredients. Consume candy that is full of nuts first. You can try freezing candy containing nuts, but there is no guarantee the texture will remain the same upon thawing. 2. Keep an eye on chocolate. Chocolate needs to be kept under cool conditions to prolong its shelf life. The National Confectioners Association says dark chocolate can be kept for one to two years if wrapped in foil and stored in a cool, dark and dry place, such as a pantry. Milk and white chocolate have a more limited storage time of no more than eight to 10 months. Hershey’s does not recommend putting chocolate in the refrigerator, as doing so can affect texture. 3. Candy corn can endure. This symbol of the season is a durable treat. If left in the original and unopened packaging, candy corn can last a few years. The manufacturer of Smarties says that its candy can last up to three years if unopened. The cooler and drier the conditions for storing the candies, the better.
4. Keep original packaging. The wrappers used to house the candy were designed to keep it fresh. Candy that has been exposed to the elements will degrade faster. When original packaging is unavailable, glass or plastic containers with airtight lids can keep Halloween candy fresher, longer. 5. Manage moisture. Candies like mints, caramels and hard candies can absorb moisture. They should not be mixed with other candies that can lose moisture, such as fudge and creamy confections. The NCA notes that hard candies can stay hard if sprinkled with finely ground sugar and stored in airtight containers. 6. Use candy in other ways. If eating chocolate bar after chocolate bar becomes tiresome, repurpose candy in different recipes. Chocolate can replace chips or morsels in cookies. Use hard candies to garnish cakes. Melt down caramels to use for ice cream toppings or chop up nutty candies to make your own sundae toppings.
Valedictorian And Salutatorian Graduation is months away, but Wantagh High School announced Travis Minutoli and Athena Yao as the Class of 2020’s valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Keeping with Warrior tradition, the students were congratulated during the morning announcements, and while accompanied with parents and faculty, took an official photo in front of the school sign as it flashed the good news. “Enjoy the moment and the year to come, because this is a special year for both of you,” Principal Carolyn Breivogel said. Travis is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and is enrolled in the district’s rigorous AP Capstone Program. He is a trustee of the National Honor Society, treasurer of the World Language Honor Society and a member of the Science Honor Society. A musician, Travis excels at playing both the saxophone and clarinet and
is not only a member of the school marching band, but secretary of the Tri-M music honor society. His extracurricular schedule also includes membership in Mathletes and the Italian Club and a position as co-captain of Science Olympiad. Travis also gives back to the community through service in the Key Club. During senior superlatives, Travis was voted “most likely to succeed.” Athena was recently designated as a National Merit Semifinalist and is a National Advanced Placement Scholar, having received an average score of 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Like David, she is enrolled in the district’s AP Capstone Program, is tutoring coordinator for the National Honor Society, a member of the World Language Honor Society and president of the National Art Honor Society.
She recently garnered the Congressional Art Award and the Scholastic Art and Writing Award and is Team A captain of the Science Olympiad team and a Key Club trustee. Athena cofounded the school’s Minds Matter Club, a socialemotional and mental health awareness forum, and is varsity captain of the girls cross-country team. She is also director of art for Girl Genius Magazine and a teaching assistant at the Long Island School of Chinese. Even more impressive is Athena’s Junior Academy membership with the New York Academy of Sciences, where as a member of an international team of students, garnered the grand prize at the Regeneron and Medidata Genomics Challenge. The district congratulates Travis and Athena on this outstanding accomplishment.
