women will continue the Marines proud tradition of excellence and we wish them the best as they move forward with their noble mission,” said Councilman Hudes. Students, parents, staff and administrators were in high spirits when they gathered at W.T. Clarke and East Meadow high schools for their annual homecoming celebrations on October 19th. Days before the homecoming celebrations, students at the schools decorated building hallways and lockers with spirit posters and streamers to showcase their school pride. At W.T. Clarke High School, students touted their school spirit by proudly wearing their school colors. Students at East Meadow High School united for a pep rally in the school’s gymnasium the day before their homecoming football game to ignite Jets spirit. With an enthusiastic crowd cheering them on, the W.T. Clarke Rams faced off against the East Rockaway Rocks in their homecoming game. During halftime, the homecoming parade made its way onto the field, led

by the W.T. Clarke High School Marching Band. Spectators cheered as the dazzling class floats proceeded onto the field, each decorated with the theme of “decades.” Recognized during the procession were Homecoming King and Queen Jesse Russo and Patricia Puchalski. Other members of the homecoming court included Duke and Duchess Anthony Buffalino and Andrea Ramkissoon, Count and Countess Justin Melkun and Jessica Chavez, and Prince and Princess Tristan Nagel and Taylor Rosenking. In a memorable win, W.T. Clarke defeated East Rockaway, 35-14. At East Meadow High School’s homecoming celebration, the school hosted a parade that started at Prospect Avenue Veterans’ Memorial Park and made its way back to the school, and included floats with the theme “retro video games.” School cheerleaders

and the marching band entertained the crowd, and spectators were on their feet as the East Meadow Jets took on the Hicksville Comets. During the halftime celebration, the community enjoyed performances by the cheerleaders, the Rockettes and the Jets Marching Band. Franz DeLeon and Gianna Bova were named homecoming king and queen, and members of the court were announced and congratulated by administrators. The homecoming court included Alexandra Francese, Amanda Franzese, Brian Giblin, Andriana Guglielmo, Nathan Siegelaub, Vanessa Silva, Garrett Stromfeld and Dylan Walz. arts and mathematics activities packet sent home at the end of last school year. “All of you should be proud for taking the extra time to complete these activities,” Principal Jeanmarie Wink said. “We know it is not easy to do schoolwork over the

summer.” Each student received a certificate and coupon for a free cookie at a local eatery. The highlight of the day, however, was the ice cream celebration held to recognize the students’ accomplishments.

Aiding The Community KFA Dental will be buying children’s Halloween candy this year in order to send these treats to our troops overseas. This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to the KFA Dental office and receive $1 per pound, up to 5 pounds. The candy collected will be part of a care package organized through Operation Gratitude, and will be sent to the troops. KFA Dental is leading this anti-decay movement by offering cash, goody bags and a chance to win

prizes. “We want to help your child establish and maintain good oral health” said Dr. Ferrari. “If we can protect children’s teeth and boost our troops’ spirits in the process then this is the ultimate winwin situation. Kids can still have all of the fun of trickor-treating and now their piggy banks will benefit as well.” Global sugar consumption for kids increases by about 2% annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year. Candy, as well as hurting children’s teeth, can lead

I am what I suppose you would classify as “slightly” obsessed with photography. Everywhere I travel, whether for the first time or the fiftieth, I am constantly on the lookout for interesting angles, landscapes, candid shots… anything that happens to catch my eye. There is something about preserving the moment that has always appealed to my sense of historical appreciation – because, after all, the second a moment has passed, it is, theoretically, history. This is not to say that every one of the thousands of photos in my digital archive would necessarily qualify as “art” or even as particularly significant to anyone but me. They are just part of the vast collection of snippets from my life, of those close to me, of the places I have been, the

events I have attended – all easily accessible whenever I, or anyone else, is in the mood for a little trip down memory lane. One would think, with such an interest in the art of photography, that I might invest in a “real” camera at some point, rather than relying solely on the somewhat questionable quality of my digital smartphone, portable and convenient as it is. And while, yes, an assortment of lenses and tools would certainly improve the technical quality, there is definitely something to be said for being able to instantly capture the scene before you. With the recent influx of social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram, there seems to be a newfound obsession with instantly sharing every photo taken, especially among those of the younger generation. While I can appreciate a good photo as much as the next person, there is

such a thing as overkill. Case in point: I recently traveled to Ireland over the summer on what was my first “real” trip – on a plane, overseas, to a land full of countless photo ops. I took what amounted (after many retakes and deletions) to about 800 photos over the course of eight days. Had I taken a cue from the masses out on Facebook, all 800 of those pictures would have been instantly uploaded the second my feet touched American soil. Instead, I managed to narrow it down to maybe a dozen of my favorites. I’m sure all my social media “friends” and “followers” thank me for that. Photography will always be something of a passion for me. And why not? Someday, all those seemingly meaningless photos will be quite significant. Better to capture those moments now.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby announced that Lakeview Youth Federation, Inc. has been awarded a grant through the town’s Department of Planning and Economic Development. The $5,500 grant is to be used as financial assistance for the Lakeview Youth Federation’s 22nd Annual Friendship Games, as well as the organization’s array of community programs and services. As my quest to find the perfect college is in full swing, my brother is becoming exposed to the game that we call college admissions. My brother, your typical sixteen yearold, is good in school, plays a sport and is well rounded. He is excited about the idea of selecting the school of his dreams, but lost as to where to start. Thankfully, his big brother is moderately well-versed in the art of the “College Application Process.” In my few years of college research, I have learned that, in order to be a candidate who admissions officers salivate over, a student shouldn’t necessarily be good in

several things, but excel in one thing. As decades have passed, colleges no longer look for the wellrounded student, but for the well-rounded class. This means that every college needs a class full of athletes, academic giants and leaders, among various other classifications. Gone are the days where the jack-of-all-trades student could virtually assure him/herself of acceptance anywhere. Now, the student that is well versed in one particular trade is arguably more appealing to an admissions officer. In addition to excelling in a particular field, a student can benefit from a “legacy situation.” This jargon

is another way of saying that, if a parent attended a specific college, you have a hook. My parents went to SUNY Oneonta, so if I applied there, theoretically, I would have the edge over an identical candidate with parental ties to SUNY Oswego. This link is beneficial to a college in an unexpected way. A long line of graduates with your last name opens up the door for big donations. Although I am just a senior with very basic knowledge of the college admissions process, I should be able to guide my little brother through what was arguably the most stressful segment of my life thus far.

MacArthur High School’s Adam Heidenfelder has been selected for the First Team All-State team. The varsity baseball pitcher was also chosen from 56 county teams as the recipient of the Nassau County Coaches Association

Diamond Award as Nassau County’s top pitcher. During the October 9th Board of Education meeting, Adam was recognized for his athletic ability and sportsmanship. In addition to being an exceptional athlete, coach

ADELPHI NEW YORK STATEWIDE BREAST CANCER HOTLINE & SUPPORT PROGRAM

In a special ceremony on October 19th, W.T. Clarke High School graduates Daniel Fisher Jr., Class of 1964, and John Pessala, Class of 1967, were inducted to the school’s Hall of Achievement. At the biannual ceremony held in the school’s Little Theater, Nassau County Legislature Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves was on hand to present the inductees with special citations, and Principal Timothy Voels offered congratulatory remarks. He explained that the Hall of Achievement was established by the school’s planning and management team in 2007 to pay tribute to graduates who have demonstrated outstanding character, dedication and leadership and whose lives and accomplishments serve to inspire others. During his time at W.T. Clarke, Mr. Fisher, a lifelong resident of the Town of Hempstead, was an active member in DECA, worked in the school store and participated in chorus and the Glee Club. A veteran of the United States Navy, Mr. Fisher, who is retired, was elected as Hempstead Town Clerk in 1980, and introduced computerization in 1982 to the town clerk’s office to provide faster, more reliable and efficient service to the public. As registrar at the Town of Hempstead, he issued and maintained birth certificates for residents, and issued marriage licenses and certificates, as well as other licenses and permits. In addition, Mr. Fisher helped preserve and catalog historical documents in the town clerk’s archives, some files even dating back to 1644. He has received numerous accolades for his management

expertise, and received the Excellence In Local Government Award from the New York State Archives and Records Administration. He continues to reside in Westbury, where he and his wife, Rita, raised three children. Mr. Pessala, who was born in Finland, was adopted and moved to the United States with his new family at the age of five. While at W.T. Clarke High School, he excelled in and outside of the classroom, and was the starting center on the basketball team. After graduating from the school, he attended Cortland State University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in history education in 1971. While serving as a high school history teacher in Smithtown, he earned a Master of Arts degree from Hofstra University in 1974 and later earned a Juris Doctor degree from St. John’s University in 1979. A member of both the Nassau County and New York State bar associations, Mr. Pessala entered into private practice and later secured a position in the Nassau County executive’s office. In 1994, he was elected as a Nassau County District Court judge and in 1995 he worked as a family court judge, where he remained until his retirement in 2006. Mr. Pessala has attended

college fairs and advised high school students on their future careers. He also initiated a project within the family court, where he collected books from private homes and made them available to patrons in the family court waiting room. Adults and children were encouraged to read while waiting for their appointments and appearances, and permitted to take the books home. Mr. Pessala has remained a positive role model for high school and college students through his open-door policy in both his home and chambers. At the ceremony, Mr. Fisher, who was joined by his wife, Rita, and granddaughter, Nova Mae Capace, received an honorary plaque for his official induction to the Hall of Achievement. Although Mr. Pessala could not attend, his wife, Elizabeth, daughter Anne and son Alexander accepted an honorary plaque on his behalf. Identical plaques were added to the Hall of Achievement wall in the school’s front lobby, where they will remain among other honorees. The East Meadow School District congratulates Mr. Fisher and Mr. Pessala on their induction into the Hall of Achievement.

During a candlelighting ceremony at Levittown Memorial Education Center, the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center celebrated the induction of 46 new members into the National Technical Honor Society. Being inducted into the society is one of the highest honors bestowed on a high school tech student, and selection is based upon a student having achieved a cumulative GPA of 88 percent, demonstrating exceptional character and leadership skills, and participating in community service. “It is not the actual honor itself, but what you had to do to achieve the honor,” Principal Joan Lorelli reminded the inductees. She also encouraged the students to continue to strive toward even greater goals and to live up to their own expectations as well as those of the school and community. After each of the officers lit a candle representing a tenet of the society, Secretary Brianne Tirino presented graphic arts teacher William Cooper with an honorary membership for his service and dedication to the students. National Technical Honor Society advisor Cristy Pastore then awarded each student with a certificate and led the students in the society’s pledge. Sticks & Stones As a kickoff to Gardiners Avenue Elementary School’s “Get A Voice” character education program, Levittown students were treated to a performance by actress Lyle Cogen in Sticks And Stones, an original play commissioned by the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts about how a person’s behavior determines whether he or she is the

bully, the bullied or the bystander. The energetic play, which features backand-forth communication between the audience and Ms. Cogen, incorporated many of the strategies and power phrases taught to students by the district in bullying situations. “By standing up and speaking up, you become an ally, or an upstander,” Ms. Cogen said. “Bullying

stops now; it is not allowed.” During the assembly, Ms. Cogen called students to the stage to play the “Step into It” game. The studentactors pretended to be in a typical bullying situation in school. Subsequent students were then called upon to use power phrases to diffuse the situation.
