Hair loss is a life changing experience. Hair We Share is a non-profit organization started by Suzanne Chimera and Dean Riskin. Their goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of those suffering hair loss due to medical conditions. Hair We Share relies solely on donations, in the form of real-hair ponytails and monetary contributions. With these donations, they provide quality hair solutions at no cost to many men, women and children throughout the USA, however they are located right here on Long Island! Like many days that came before it in 2020, Election Day figures to be unique this year. The global COVID-19 pandemic has changed many aspects of life as people know it, and it figures to change how they vote this fall as well. The right to vote and participate in a representative government should never be taken for granted. Many people across the globe have no such right, so citizens of the United States should be grateful they can vote and express that gratitude by doing their part and voting each year on Election Day. State and local governments may be approaching Election Day differently as they try to juggle their responsibilities to make voting accessible to all while simultaneously keeping voters safe during the pandemic. Voters can do their part by taking the following steps prior to Election Day, which is November 3, 2020. • Confirm you are registered to vote. Voter registration deadlines
differ by state. According to Vote.org, some states, including Colorado and Connecticut, allow eligible voters to register on Election Day and cast their ballots that very same day, but many states, such as Alaska, Hawaii and Louisiana, require voters to be registered 30 days prior to Election Day. A list of state-by-state voter registration requirements can be found at www.vote. org/voter-registrationdeadlines/. • Learn the mail-in ballot policy in your state. Many voters may not vote via mail-in ballots on a typical Election Day, but 2020 is not a typical year. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. notes that all states offer some form of mailin ballots. Many states are asking voters to vote via mail-in ballots in 2020 in an effort to reduce voters’ risk of getting and spreading the COVID-19 virus. Confirm the mail-in ballot policy and procedure in your state as early as possible to make sure your vote is counted.
• Return your completed mail-in ballot as soon as possible. Many states are urging voters who plan to vote using mail-in ballots to return their ballots as early as possible. In a mailer sent to all registered voters, the Superintendent of Elections and the Board of Elections in New Jersey noted it is critical that voters return their mailin ballots early in the upcoming election season. Mail-in ballots can be returned via the United States Postal Service (all ballots include postage paid return envelopes), and voters also may be able to return their ballots in person at their designated polling locations or by placing the ballots in secure ballot drop boxes. Confirm your mail-in ballot return options with your local County Clerk of Elections well before Election Day. Election Day 2020 will be unique. Voters should not hesitate to take all necessary steps in advance of November 3 to ensure their votes are counted this fall.

Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Students Clean Up Streets To Shores
Students across the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been making their mark in the surrounding communities by creating or participating in environmental cleanups. Led by their teacher Brian Joyce, the Leadership classes at Sanford H. Calhoun High School organized a Community Cleanup Oct. 9. “It was great to see our students doing something positive for the neighborhood,” said Principal Nicole Hollings. The effort was spearheaded by student, Adam Selcedo, who shared that he noticed an abundance of trash on the ground while he was
exercising. He brought the idea to classmates who agreed to address the issue head on. “I couldn’t believe the amount of garbage that was left on the ground…just a couple of feet away from a garbage can,” student Nicole Devlin noted. Students remarked about feeling accomplished after participating. “It made me realize how easily I can brighten other people’s day by completing small tasks,” added student Frankie Depalo. Leadership classes throughout the district are aimed at promoting community service and fostering group process, self-awareness and human relations skills among
students. The Wellington C. Mepham High School LEO Club participated in a Jones Beach cleanup with the environmental awareness group, SPLASH (Stop Polluting Littering and Save Harbors) on Oct. 17. “The response by the LEOs was very enthusiastic and I’m so proud of how hard they worked and how they want to play a part in taking care of their environment,” said science teacher and club co-adviser Josephine Parlagreco. “The same day they were asking to do it again.” Sponsored by the Bellmore Lions Club, the Leo Club’s mission is one of altruism and philanthropy.

Members of the East Meadow High School Jets Marching Band safely assembled outdoors, with 12 feet of social distancing as per the New York State Department of Health, for the school’s annual marching band clinic on Sept. 26. The
students started the day with sectional rehearsals. The day continued with instruction on marching band fundamentals, such as body carriage, connecting feet to the music and working together to move and play as one cohesive unit.
This year’s guest clinician was David Abrams from the Long Island Sunrisers Drum and Bugle Corps. The day culminated with all students marching on the football field, combining the music and marching they learned throughout the day.

Students Spread Joy One Bracelet At A Time
Four seniors from Division Avenue High School in the Levittown Public Schools, along with a junior from Hicksville High School, recently started Patterns for Patients, a small non-profit organization that sends care packages filled with handmade bracelets, toys, stickers and masks (if allowed) to pediatric hospitals. Striving to spread joy, Tarangini Arunachalam, Mahek Mody, Rhythm Osan and Vicky Zhang from Division Avenue High School and Jason Jiang from Hicksville High School have made it their mission
to donate care packages to as many hospitals as possible. Thus far, they have already donated a total of 125 individually wrapped bracelets to St. Luke’s in Boise, ID, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, NY. To help raise funds for their care packages, the five students have been creating and selling bracelets, as well as accepting donations. During October, the group is working on a special Breast Cancer Awareness project where they are selling bracelets to raise
awareness with all of the proceeds supporting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The idea to start the non-profit was sparked from downtime during the pandemic. “Over quarantine, my friends and I decided to take up learning how to make friendship bracelets to pass time,” said Arunachalam. “Soon enough, we had dozens of bracelets with no real purpose for them. We thought it would be nice to donate them to some pediatric hospitals and then it evolved into Patterns for Patients!”

How to Safely Trick-or-Treat this Halloween Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued new guidelines on how to celebrate Halloween safely. The agency grouped Halloween activities into low, moderate and highrisk buckets with traditional door-to-door trick-ortreating making the top of the higher-risk activities for spreading COVID-19. The guidelines come one week after Governor Andrew Cuomo said he wouldn’t formally ban trick-ortreating this year, but said he won’t necessarily encourage parents to take kids door-todoor either. For those who do plan to head out this October, Sharon Nachman, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital has some tips for families on how to safely trick-or-treat on Halloween during the pandemic. 1. Staying 6 feet away

while walking and going from home to home. 2. Go trick-or-treating in small groups. 3. Parents and kids should always wear their masks while walking in the neighborhood, as well as when you open the door to hand out candy. 4. Not allowing (older) kids to go out unsupervised.
5. Consider organizing your route. Talk to friends and neighbors and have a preset signal. For example, outside lights means kids know this is a home you can stop at for trick-or-treating. 6. Only wrapped candies or treats. 7. Some families may elect to leave a few treats on their outside stoop of their home. If that is the case, then remind kids to only take one! 8. No parties! 9. You can leave a bucket or wear a mask and use hand sanitizer when handing out treats. No crowding at the door is important. 10. Pre-organize the route. “Parents can work to make trick-or-treating safe. It will take some extra preparation and thinking,” said Dr. Nachman. “Kids can have a good time. It will just look different from past years but that’s fine.”

A small team of artists hand-carves more than 7,000 jacks and elaborate pumpkin sculptures, including huge displays like a replica of the Montauk Lighthouse and a giant sea serpent. In addition to its debut on Long Island, the Blaze is continuing in its 16th year at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-onHudson, NY, a National Historic Landmark owned and operated by Historic Hudson Valley. To meet demand, the organization is adding extra dates there as well.
Blaze takes place entirely outdoors, is touch-free, uses timed admission, and features a one-way walkthrough path with no places to congregate. Capacity is reduced by 67%, allowing visitors to enjoy their time as safely and socially distanced as possible. All staff and visitors must wear a mask when on site. All visitors are required to agree to Historic Hudson Valley’s COVID Courtesy Code, which includes wearing a mask and maintaining at least 6 feet of social distancing. Proceeds support the programs of Historic Hudson Valley and Old Bethpage Village Restoration.
