Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 7th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Wednesday, November 18th, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest which will then help supply Thanksgiving holiday meals to the more than 300,000 hungry Long Islanders through its distribution network of 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding

Mercy Center held its fifth annual run/walk over the bridge for homeless teens at Smith Point Park on Saturday, October 17th. Participants from all over the Island came out to support the cause and enjoy the beautiful and unique 3.1 mile course over the bridge. Island Harvest has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 570 community-based agencies it serves. About 70,000 individuals receive

food assistance from the Island Harvest network each week. Finned Wit & Wisdom By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Here I come to save the day, yet again, with my witty observations on life from within the confines of my bowl. The Human, it seems, is busy getting herself ready for a wedding – one, I might add, that I was not invited to. And here I had my bowtie and top hat all picked out for the occasion. How rude. I suppose this means my dinner will be late too. What does a fish have to do to maintain a steady feeding schedule? Sometimes it’s twice a day, sometimes once… four flakes, five… sometimes only a couple when I knock the rest down to the gravel with my fins, never to be seen again. Speaking of which, these

late-night feedings have to stop. Back and forth, I swim my laps, anxiously waiting for my Human to arrive. Eventually, after days of starvation {10 hours or so} I give up hope, putting myself to bed with no supper. But wait, is that a light I see? I groggily press my nose against the glass, dimly making out the shadow of my Human, apologizing for getting home so late. I sleepily bounce from one branch of my plant to another, aimlessly chomping at imaginary flakes, before putting myself back to bed, thoroughly unsatisfied. I suppose I’m always hungry though. I have no concept of time, or quantity. As many times as I find flakes fluttering into my bowl, I will

greedily inhale them, barely pausing to chew in between. From my experience, you have to savor these feeding times, since you never know when the next one may come around. Sort of like the Mets and their quest for the World Series. I haven’t been around long, but I hear this is a pretty rare occurrence. Me, I tend to root for the Marlins. Us fish gotta stick together, after all. But, I suppose I’m a New Yorker, officially. Maybe my Human will buy me some blue and orange gravel so I can root, root, root for the home team…you know, on our trip to the pet store that I’ve been promised since August. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

With student achievement as the end goal, 17 districts from throughout Nassau County worked with Nassau BOCES on a variety of technology projects this summer. Collectively, these districts invested nearly $24 million in technology upgrades within the 10week summer period. This is the time when schools are mostly closed, allowing the agency the opportunity to accomplish such upgrades. These projects ranged from wireless connectivity and complete network refreshes to implementing new email systems. In addition, Nassau BOCES technicians readied more than 29,000 computers, laptops and mobile devices for students and administrators for their first day back. For the techs, solutions are always more important than the technology.

the best thing they could do to help students become college and career ready is to completely refresh their system.” Oyster Bay-East Norwich CSD updated its technology infrastructure, added wireless connectivity and replaced laptops and other computers throughout the district. “They now have a system that can sustain them for up to 10 years,” said Dhillon. East Rockaway UFSD wanted help prepping its network for the district’s new 1-to-1 initiative, which will pair each sixth grade student with a laptop. After helping the district select the best device for its needs, each of the laptops had to be prepared for student use. They all needed software and filters so that students cannot access inappropriate websites. Improved collaboration

“Our conversations with our districts always start with ‘What are you trying to accomplish?’” said Sandeep Dhillon, who oversees the Nassau BOCES technicians. “Then we talk to them about the best options to get those results. We’re not married to any specific brands or types of technology. We strive for the best outcomes using the most affordable methods to achieve them. In addition, our cooperative buying power saves districts money and helps them meet their goals.” Sometimes these conversations lead to more comprehensive projects. One example is how Nassau BOCES handled a tech project for the Oyster Bay-East Norwich CSD. “They requested that we help them develop a fiveyear technology plan for the district,” said Dhillon. “Once we reviewed it with them, they realized that

First off, I want to apologize for the morbidity already displayed one sentence into this essay. If you’re looking to read about average summer vacation stories, or the day someone won their first trophy, I would advise you to stop reading. I don’t write this to receive sob stories from countless people, or even gain sympathetic condolences. I just want to put life into perspective. I want to inform you readers of the true and raw meaning of life, and what many people have forgotten over the years while in the midst of everyday life. The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy. I think many people

have forgotten this idea, and it saddens me to feel the need to write this, informing people on how to truly live. I lost a dear friend of mine recently. She was a family friend, but I definitely considered her family - like an aunt. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, and it only took a few months for the cancer to completely demolish her body. It’s not fair how she died so suddenly and irrationally. Life works mysteriously like that. I can’t quite put into words the feelings I encountered the day she died. But that’s a whole other story. One regret I have whilst she was still alive was not laughing and smiling a little bit more when I was still in her presence. I’m a glass half full type of person. I like to see things in positive perspectives. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.

In my eyes, if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, you’re lucky. The countless complaints that our society has adapted to consider “normal” is absurd… Now, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never complained before. Hell, I probably complain a little too much. But luckily, I have the decency to step back and view the bigger picture in terms of the pursuit of happiness and pure joy and all of that cheerful nonsense. Live a little. Don’t let the little things bring you down. Be grateful for family and love and joy and laughter and all that good stuff that doesn’t cost a penny. Happiness is a free commodity. Only God knows when your life is coming to an end, so take advantage of every day. Say your “I love you’s” and give your biggest hugs and don’t regret a thing. Life is way too short - I can’t stress this enough.

a partner to participate in the national folk dance of Mexico, “Jarabe Tapatio,” commonly known as “The Mexican Hat Dance.” Workshops were given at elementary, middle and high school levels, and gave the RKS students the opportunity to learn coordination, cooperation, different sounds and rhythm all while seeing the colorful dance and listening to drum music. Ballet Folklorico Nacional of Milwaukee visited Nassau BOCES Rosemary Kennedy School (RKS) to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage month. The dance group performed and then conducted workshops, imparting their heritage and culture to the students with special needs. The students learned about the use of different instruments and how the Aztecs used them to communicate between villages or how a rattle could be used to keep them safe from prey. The lead dancer was in the traditional regalia with an elaborate feathered Aztec headdress. Members of the dance troupe were dressed in colorful costumes. They taught the historic moves of the “White Eagle” followed by each RKS student taking

For Cheryl Fontana, earning this newly created role of Director of Fine & Performing Arts and Adult Education at the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District continues her story of coming home. “This is the ultimate dream position; to work in the district I grew up in,” the Calhoun alum said. “This is where it all started for me. My hope is to now have a role in shaping creative experiences for kids that will instill the

same passion for the arts that was given to me while I was a student here.” While Fontana has been working in district since 2003 as an English teacher and administrator (also serving as Director of the Middle School Drama club), theater and music have always been her true passions. She has worked professionally in theater starting with her Broadway debut at age 14. Following college, she performed in The Radio City Christmas

Spectacular as well as numerous regional productions. Mostly recently, Fontana was asked to play the title role in Mary Poppins for the Broadhollow Theatre Co. “My theater experience allows me to look at the arts from different angles,” she said. “It also gives me a broad perspective of all three programs – fine arts, music and theatre.” Fontana’s vision for the program includes creating new opportunities for our students in all areas: “It’s taking what we have and trying to build and expand to truly prepare students for careers in the arts.” While other districts are quick to cut art programs, Fontana heralded the constant support of the BMCHSD and Board of Education. “They understand that it’s such an important part of so many kids’ lives; we are a lucky district,” she added.

Hall of Achievement It was a day of celebration at W.T. Clarke High School on October 17th, as Class of 1965 graduate Peter C. White was inducted into the Hall of Achievement. After graduating from Clarke, White received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Dayton, a Master’s of Arts Degree from Hofstra University and a degree in School Administration and Supervision from Long Island University. After teaching at Gilbert School in Brooklyn and Holy Family in Hicksville, White taught at Northport High School for 31 years. While teaching at NHS, White founded the Students for 60,000 to raise money for food and clothing for the homeless people of New York City. In 1990, White visited the rural areas of Nicaragua,

where he was appalled at the squalor. Upon his return, White arranged for a Nicaraguan student to come to the United States and attend Northport High School and Wilson Tech for one year. Once the student returned home, White received approval from the Board of Education to organize a student trip to Nicaragua. Through White’s leadership, members of the Students for 60,000 have purchased nearly 200 acres of land, and funded and constructed more than 100 concrete-block and tin-roofed homes, a school, health clinic and a community center. They have also provided chickens, cows, tractors, plows, medical supplies and food to people in the region. Peter has led more than 600 trips to help those

in need. “When I first went to Nicaragua, I wept at least 10 times a day,” White said. “Seeing what I did made me appreciate what I have here so much more. I wanted to share that with the students.” White credited his time at Clarke for helping him become the man he wanted to be. After being raised solely by his mother, whom he called his most prominent teacher, White said the educators at Clarke made him want to become a teacher. “Nothing feels better than this…to be right here with all of you at W.T. Clarke High School,” White said, as students, staff and members of his graduating class looked on. “I’m not the true hero here. The heroes here are the students.”

Parents and faculty gathered at the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center in Levittown for the induction of 24 new members of the National Technical Honor Society. GC Tech Director Frank Creter congratulated the students on this important accomplishment. “You have earned a spot as the top five percent of the class,” Creter said. “You are the brightest stars of tomorrow and represent the best of school and community.” Advisor Christy

Lombarski explained that being inducted into the society is one of the highest honors bestowed on a high school tech student, and selection is based upon a student having achieved a cumulative GPA of 90 percent, demonstrating exceptional character and leadership skills, and participating in community service. After an induction of the new officers (Joey Grzybowski (president), Shane Gunning (vice president), Melissa Fiolet (secretary) and John Messina (treasurer), a

candle lighting ceremony emphasized the core values of the society. Each student was then called to the dais to receive a membership certificate, pin and tassel and to repeat the NTHS pledge. Ties for Ties In the spirit of unity and becoming tied together as a community, history was made on October 17th, as the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District set a new world record for the most neck ties tied together at one time. The final tally was 10,868 ties, which were all spread around the track at John F. Kennedy High School. The idea came from JFK senior Cory Epstein, who pitched the idea to the Board of Education in January. Just nine short months later, the Guinness Book of World Records mark has been broken. “It’s unreal,” Epstein

said. “I could have never imagined the kind of support this received.” Epstein said he received donations from all around the world, and volunteers from all six district buildings helped the event come to fruition. In order for the record to be validated, all tie counts had to be double checked and recorded on video before all materials were sent to Guinness for final review. The previous record was 8,695 ties. All ties will be donated to various charitable organizations to help indigent men who are looking to reenter the job force. “With the power of

togetherness, the things we can achieve are limitless,” Epstein added. “As educators, we encourage students to use their talents and resources to make a difference,” Kennedy Principal Lorraine Poppe said. “Today we are here for our students…all of our students.” Superintendent John DeTommaso mentioned how proud he was of the effort. “An idea like this is truly spectacular,” he said. “The power and pride of Bellmore-Merrick is on full display today.”

Fire Education Chatterton Elementary School students learned about fire safety during this year’s “Hear the Beep Where you Sleep” fire prevention assembly. Local firefighters educated K-3 students

about the importance of fire detectors, how firefighters extinguish a fire and what do to if there is a fire. Following the assembly, students asked about fire equipment while receiving a tour of

fire trucks, engines and ambulances. Students left the assembly well informed about fire safety and encouraged to discuss fire prevention with their families.

Bringing Awareness to a Local Lvl November was designated as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month by President Ronald Reagan in 1983. Since then, the recognition was enhanced to also honor the Caregivers who aid Alzheimer’s patients. In honor of this national event, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center,

Inc. (ADRC) is reminding everyone that nearly 60,000 Long Islanders suffer from the disease each day. Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain condition that affects cognitive function and consequently the ability to perform day to day tasks. At the time of President Reagan’s designation,

fewer than two million Americans suffered from the disease. Today, that number has soared to more than 5.4 million people. Alzheimer’s care can be very costly both for patients and their families, who often serve as the primary caregivers. There are presently more than 15 million people caring for

Alzheimer’s and dementia patients throughout the country. This includes not only assisted living professionals, but also children, spouses/partners, friends and neighbors. In 2015, Alzheimer’s and other dementias will cost the nation $226 million in both medical and general care services.

In an effort to increase awareness and support for Long Islanders and their families who are affected by the disease, ADRC is hosting two events in November. This includes the organization’s Second Annual Give from the Heart “Athletes for Endurance” competition, which is being held at

gyms across Long Island throughout the month of November. This event promotes physical fitness, considered a vital element to fighting dementia, by challenging endurance athletes to do as many push-ups as possible. This year’s series is in memory of Dorothy C. Camilleri,

Marching to the Top Levittown’s Division Avenue Competitive Marching Band, led by student drum majors Brandon Hoyt, Michael Mahoney and color guard captain Teresa Neri, took first place last weekend at the Sachem High School marching band competition.

Division Avenue High School’s final score of 74.95 places them first in the state amongst 12 other marching bands in their class. The marching band’s show, “Puppet Master,” is a fast paced, highly visual show, which has created a buzz in the marching band

community. The band has two shows left during the regular season before competing on November 1st at the New York State Field Band Championships, held in Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome.

In honor of national Fire Prevention Week, kindergarten students at Charles a Reinhard Early Childhood Center took a walking trip down Bellmore Avenue to the Bellmore Fire Department’s Engine Company 2670 station. Assistant Chief Tom Stoerger spoke to the

students about fire safety in the home, including the need for smoke detectors, a family escape plan, how to “get low and go” in the event of a fire and to “stop, drop and roll.” The students listened to the sound a smoke detector makes during a fire, were instructed on

how a fireman looks in his gear, and even had the opportunity to climb aboard a fire truck. “The most important message is that the firefighter is always your friend, because friends help friends,” Mr. Stoerger told the students.

All About Reading Students and their families attended Bellmore School District’s first annual Literacy Night at Winthrop Avenue School with fun-filled activities and a book fair for the district’s avid readers. The event coincided with the schools’ annual Parents as Reading Partners week, which was full of literacy activities and encouragement for students to read an additional 15 minutes each evening. “We wanted the students to see that reading is required in everything they do,” Winthrop Avenue School Principal

Sally Curto said. “We also wanted to make the students more excited about reading and to give them the opportunity to purchase more books.” During Literacy Night, there were readalouds by members of the community, administrators and Board trustees. Bellmore-Merrick School District’s JFK High School students led students in a science literacy activity, which required them to read a story and then make a Light Up Halloween bulb. In addition, there were Book Bingo games, a Math

Literacy Center activity, writing center and Stop, Drop and Read section. Students also donated to the Book Fairy Donation Center and placed their names in their school’s raffle box for prizes. Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services Dr. Joanne C. Dacek said Literacy Night was a welcomed event that is sure to grow each year. “Not only did Literacy Night promote reading, it brought a community of learners together,” she said.
