Levittown Special Events To Host A Levittown Anniversary Howl-O-Ween Parade best cos-tume contests for the pets and children and a day of Halloween fun. Levittown Special Events hosts the Levittown anniversary events. Plans for anniversary activities began in 2017 with a goal of making the community aware of the 75th anniversary date of 2022. Several events were held, but activities were curtailed in 2019 and 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. The Pet Parade is the sec-ond event held in 2021; the first being a very successful Historic Bike Tour

held in September. Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness. Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to ﬁnd clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult. They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares. If you are interested in making a donation to or volunteering with the Boutique, please email boutique@addressthehomeless.org. Additionally, they are holding a Volunteer Day On Saturday, November 13th at the Boutique. This day allows anyone who is vaccinated to come down and get involved, whether it be for community service hours or not. There will be two

separate volunteer sessions; a Morning Session from 10AM12PM and an Afternoon Session from 1PM-3PM. Volunteers will be sorting non-perishable food items, along with other items. Masks are required and volunteers who will attend are encouraged to bring a donation of non-perishable food (canned or boxed goods) with them to this Volunteer Day. To all military and veterans, come try or restart your BJJ and/or Yoga training and begin or continue healing; your life will improve in countless ways. Challenge yourself alongside your brothers and sisters in arms. The reintegration for Military Veterans back into civilian life can be difficult. Signs and symptoms of struggle are not always easily identifiable. PTSD, if left untreated, can lead to substance

abuse issues and even suicide. PTSD is a growing epidemic; nationally there is an average of 22 veteran suicides a day. More can and should be done to help people that are struggling. Studies show that Long Island has the second largest population of Veterans in the United States, second only to San Diego, California. Suffolk County has approximately 85,000 veterans and Nassau County has approximately 75,000 veterans. Instructors, practitioners and studies have shown the benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Yoga on the emotional,

physical and spiritual well being of participants. It can have a profound impact on individuals, specifically veterans, suffering from a variety of distress, including PTSD. Almost all of the participants inquired about future pickleball playing opportunities at Wantagh Park and at Sportime. It was a huge success. We were thrilled to partner with Nassau County to host such a great event.” Renovated and New Courts in County Parks Wantagh Five tennis courts resurfaced and striped to create 10 new pickleball courts. County Investment: $167,100 Nickerson Two tennis courts and two basketball courts

resurfaced. Added additional lines were added to the tennis courts for two pickleball courts. County Investment: $175,300 North Woodmere: Ten tennis courts and two basketball courts were resurfaced. Additional lines were added to five of the tennis courts to create 10 pickleball courts. County Investment: $560,000 No fees are required to use County pickleball, tennis or basketball courts. Players currently can bring their own portable pickleball nets to play and will be able to pick up nets at each park’s administration building in the near future. Pickleball can be played on courts specifically

built for the sport or by “striping” tennis courts, adding new lines to existing courts and setting up portable nets. Nassau County has 6,000 acres of parks, providing green space, basketball courts, baseball fields, ice skating rinks, golf, swimming, summer camps and much more. The county’s parks attract more than a million visitors in a typical year. Pickleball has been growing rapidly, as tennis courts are modified and pickleball courts are built, providing a fast-paced sport on 20-foot by 44foot courts. The number of pickleball players in the United States grew from 3.1 million in 2018 to about $4.2 million by 2020, according to pickleballportal.com.

Wantagh Students Get Cameo On ‘George To The Rescue’ A pair of Wantagh High School students, who volunteer their time every summer to help children and adults with disabilities, were recently featured on NBC’s home renovation show “George to the Rescue.” This time the setting was the Town of Hempstead’s Camp ANCHOR in Lido Beach, where seniors Bella Nocera and Kevin Pfundstein are volunteers for the six-week summer recreation program. They are featured at the beginning of the episode, which aired on Sept. 18, asking host and contractor George Oliphant to come to the camp and beautify the handball court. Wantagh High School teacher Gina Federico, Camp ANCHOR’s volunteer coordinator, tapped the pair for the national TV spot, in which Bella and Kevin also discussed the mission of Camp ANCHOR, the role of volunteers and the

importance of the program for the campers. Bella, who has volunteered for the past three summers, was initially inspired to get involved because she has cousins who attend the camp. “I just fell in love with the program from the first day I started working there,” she said. “Everyone is always happy and our campers are such kind, caring people.” Kevin just completed his second summer as a volunteer. He has a cousin with cerebral palsy and said that sparked his desire to help people with disabilities. Camp ANCHOR is just a big family, he said, where “the campers are the stars.” On “George to the Rescue,” the handball court was turned into a miniature golf course for the campers. Bella and Kevin said it was exciting to watch the show and

see which parts of their interviews were used. While they admitted that it was little weird to see themselves on television, they were glad to see the camp get the recognition it deserves. At Wantagh High School, Kevin is president of Science Olympiad and treasurer of the National Honor Society. Bella is a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club and is a Class of 2022 officer. Principal Dr. Paul Guzzone said it is always rewarding to see Wantagh High School students share their passion for helping others and noted that the volunteer work by Bella and Kevin is inspirational. ““We’re so proud of them for taking what they love to do and sharing it with others in the Long Island region,” he said. “They’re a great representation of what this school and community is all about.”

North Bellmore Students Have Hearts, And Shirts, Of Gold

It’s not every day that yellow shirts are the predominant fashion choice at a school, but on Sept. 30, students in the North Bellmore School District were united in the fight against pediatric cancer by making a statement with their wardrobes. The district hosted its

annual Go Gold Day on the final day of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Students and staff incorporated gold, yellow and neon green into their outfits in many different ways. Many children had gold shoelaces and beaded necklaces to show their support for the cause. Others wore shirts with

messages like “Be Bold, Go Gold” and “In September, We Wear Gold.” North Bellmore teachers also made donations to Solving Kids Cancer, which focuses on the development of new treatments for aggressive childhood cancers.

Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

The Complicated Connection Between Black Cats, Witches And Halloween Come October, it’s hard to miss the many indelible images associated with Halloween. Homeowners may decorate their home exteriors with scarecrows, inflatable ghouls and goblins, and jack-o’lanterns. Local businesses also may get in on the fun, offering “spooktacular” sales and decorating their storefronts with images of vampires, witches and other symbols of Halloween. Black cats have become synonymous with Halloween decor, but few may know how this association came to be. According to History. com, the notion of black cats as bad omens can be traced to the Middle Ages. Back then, people believed witches avoided detection by turning themselves into black cats. The perception of black cats as something more than mere felines may even pre-date the Middle Ages. For example, in Norse mythology, Freyja, a goddess of, among other things, a type of Late Scandinavian Iron Age magic known as “Seior,” was believed to have ridden a chariot pulled by two cats. That connection

to sorcery could explain the link between black cats and witches that continues to be made today. Despite the lengthy history suggesting black cats are bad omens, it’s not all bad for these dark-colored felines. One researcher at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History found that Welsh folklore depicted black cats as harbingers of good luck, and even noted their ability to predict the weather. Black cats are one of many symbols of

Halloween. And much like jack-o’-lanterns and trickor-treating, the story of how black cats came to be associated with Halloween is interesting and thoughtprovoking.

More than 250 Levittown students from both Division Avenue and General Douglas MacArthur high school were recognized by College Board for their outstanding scores on the collegelevel Advanced Placement exams. These students include those from last year’s graduating class and this year’s seniors. College Board recognizes different levels of achievement based on a student’s performance on these exams. Some students earned more than one Scholar designation for their achievements. One hundred twenty-

seven students were recognized as AP Scholars, receiving scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. Forty-six students were named AP Scholars with Honor, earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Eighty-three students were named AP Scholars with Distinction. To earn this award, a student must receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. In addition, 15 Levittown students earned their AP

Seminar and Research Certificate and 20 students received their AP Capstone Diploma. The AP Seminar and Research Certificate is granted to those who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research but not on four additional AP Exams. The AP Capstone Diploma is given to those students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing. The district congratulates all the AP Scholars on their achievement.

“No One Goes Hungry In Hempstead” Food Program In Time For Holiday Season

Supervisor Don Clavin, along with the entire Hempstead Town Board, announced the authorization of a $470,539.78 relief grant for Island Harvest Food Bank to establish the “2021 No One Goes Hungry in Hempstead” food distribution program for Town of Hempstead residents, including, senior citizens, veterans and other vulnerable populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. This program will run through December 31, 2021. The grant has been made possible through the federal CARES Act, which provided the Town of Hempstead with funding last year to provide economic aid to local organizations, nonprofits and individuals impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this month, the Town received the second part of the funding and is working diligently to help people and organizations affected by the pandemic. The grant was also announced by Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., Councilman Tom Muscarella, Councilman Chris Carini, Town Clerk Kate Murray and Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll, along with Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “Thank you to Senator Schumer for securing the extension of last year’s CARES Act funding that made multiple initiatives like this one possible,” Clavin said. “Working with a bipartisan Town Board, we worked to ensure that funds were used to directly assist residents who were reeling from the health and economic impacts of the pandemic. Through federal CARES act funds, the Town of Hempstead has provided over a million meals; thousands of free COVID-19 tests in collaboration with Northwell for the general public, essential workers and first responders and over 7,000 COVID-19 vaccines have been administered thanks to the Town of Hempstead’s “Vaxmobile” in partnership with Mount Sinai South Nassau; thousands of PPE kits to small businesses and financial aid to front line entities and community centers such as villages, hospitals, fire departments, schools, colleges and universities and libraries. In addition, the Town of Hempstead recently extended a program with United Way of Long Island to provide free air filters to atrisk senior citizens. Students Show Their Gratitude

To mark School Board Recognition Week, students from the Levittown Public Schools personally thanked the seven volunteers who comprise the Board of Education for giving them a wealth of opportunities. Todd Winch, the assistant superintendent for instruction, personally acknowledged each trustee and noted their service time on the board. President Peggy Marenghi, Vice President Jennifer Messina, Secretary James Moran and trustees Marianne Adrian, Dillon Cain, Christina Lang and Michael Pappas have

devoted a combined total of 72 years to the students of Levittown as board members. Students from the National Junior Honor Society at Jonas E. Salk Middle School, the student governments at Wisdom Lane Middle School and Division Avenue High School and senior class officers from MacArthur High School came up to express their gratitude and present gifts. Board members received customized Division Avenue sweatshirts and wood-carved name plaques made by MacArthur students, among other

presents. Each elementary school created an appreciation poster, and the six were hung up during the meeting. Gratitude was also expressed by the athletic department and PTA. Additionally, board members received citations from elected officials with Nassau County and the New York State Assembly and Senate. Ms. Marenghi said that the board was humbled and grateful, and said their success is a result of the “togetherness” that exists in Levittown to ensure that all children receive a great education.

Gold Attire Raises Childhood Cancer Awareness In Wantagh From their shirts to their shorts to their shoelaces, students at Wantagh Middle School found many ways to incorporate yellow and gold into their wardrobes on Sept. 24. The school participated in the Go Gold initiative for Childhood Cancer Awareness Day. The purpose of the gold attire was to raise awareness about an illness that affects more than 10,000 children a year under age 15. It has even

hit close to home. At 7 years old, James Lodato lost his battle with cancer in 2018 and would have entered sixth grade at Wantagh Middle School this year. A new baseball field, the James Lodato Field of Dreams, was dedicated earlier this year at Forest Lake Elementary School. “This is a cause near and dear to our hearts,” said middle school Principal Anthony Ciuffo, who donned a black shirt with

the initials JL inside a graphic of a baseball with gold wings and a halo. “It is touching that so many of our students wore gold to show their support for James and all those in the battle.” Many students swapped out their shoelaces with the gold ones provided by the school, with others using them to make necklaces and headbands to add an extra splash of gold to their outfits to support the cause.
