n celebration of Johnny Appleseed’s birthday and the season, kindergarten students in Joan Margolis’ and Dawn Minuto’s class at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School in Levittown studied apples. After reading several books about this popular historical figure, the students studied the life cycle of the apple and the fall season, learning that there are more than 7,500 varieties of the fruit. Students enjoyed this fun and educational lesson.

The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.
Supervisor Anthony J. Santino announced that registration is underway for the annual Senior Citizen Seasonal Flu Immunization Program. Partnering with NuHealth (Nassau University Medical Center) and South Nassau Communities Hospital, Hempstead Town is offering influenza vaccinations for senior residents, age 60 or older, at several town locations. “Health officials recommend flu vaccines to reduce flu illnesses, and prevent flu-related hospitalizations and deaths. In recent flu seasons, between 80 and 90 percent of influenzarelated deaths have occurred in people ages 65 years and older,” said Santino. “A flu vaccine

This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect
of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in

Blast from the Past
Fourth-graders at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District traveled back more than 2,000 years with the help of Journeys into American Indian Territory to learn about the civilization of American Indians. The in-school field trip immersed students in American Indian culture with a museum display
of tools and clothing that helped communities gather food, hunt, build wigwams, and protect themselves from wild animals and extreme weather conditions. Guided by presenters Maddi Cheers and Marianna Franzese Chasen, students established their own Iroquois government among their classmates. They were divided into
groups and asked to select one leader based on the qualities of kindness, equality and openmindedness to assist in leading their village. The fourth-graders also re-enacted the lives of American Indian children by playing games, reading authentic stories, creating clay pots and dancing to traditional music.

Marching to Celebrate In preparation for the Huntington Columbus Day Parade, the marching bands of East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools in the East Meadow School District practiced their routines with the help of marching band clinicians. Each school’s band and color guard set aside a full day to improve their tone,
accuracy and rhythm with individual instrument and group marching sessions. To perfect their routine, W.T. Clarke’s students received assistance from Stony Brook University Director of Athletic Bands Dr. Christopher Parkers, high school music chairperson Steve Engle, band teacher Steve
Barbieri and percussion teacher Steve Blutman. The East Meadow High School students worked with Carl Boos, marching band clinic coordinator, as well as high school music chairperson Christopher Hale and music teachers Molly Tittler, Neil Walowitz, Zachary deVries and Gregory Sisco.

Shore Road students in Bellmore attended a character education assembly with presenter and retired police officer/ actor Paul Failla. Drawing on real life experiences and historic events, Failla utilized humor, drama and
role-playing to engage the students in the exploration of topics, including destructive decisions, diversity, dignity and respect, values, leadership, profiling, racism and ridicule. Tying into the district’s
core values and leadership character education program, Failla told the students to “surround yourselves with people who respect you for being you” and to “person up and take responsibility for your actions.”

The Wantagh Athletics Department and the Wantagh Sports Booster Club are conducting a shoe collection drive through December. WSBC will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected, as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated shoes. Funds will benefit the athletic program and weight room update. The community can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes at the Wantagh High School Athletic Office. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished individuals start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other Central American and African nations. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school. “We are excited about our shoe drive,” said Maureen Conklin and Kate Powell, WSBC copresidents. “We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they would like to donate to us and help those less fortunate become self-sufficient.” Jennifer Keane, Wantagh director of health, physical education and athletics, said that by donating shoes to the Wantagh Athletics Department and to the WSBC shoe drive, the shoes will be given a second chance and will make a difference in people’s lives. “It’s a winwin for everyone,” Keane added. All donations can be dropped off at the Wantagh Senior High School Athletic Office.

During a special presentation by I Fish New York representatives Bob McCormack and Francis McParland, Summit Lane fifth-grade students in Levittown learned about the varieties of fish that lurk within the salt and fresh waters on Long Island. The program, sponsored by the Department of Environmental Conservation, helped prepare the students for a boat trip on the Yankee III out of Captree State Park. The students learned the differences between the terms “predator” and “prey” and the fish that are classified under these categories. They also learned facts about the large-mouth bass, sunfish, striped sea bass (striper), fluke and sea robin and the lateral line organ that assists in their sensing prey in the open waters.

In a New York state of mind, Levy Lakeside School students in the Merrick School District began their Pick a Reading Partner Week themed “Start Spreading the News, We’re Reading Today!”

Increasing Hempstead Town’s accessibility to all residents has been a top priority of my administration,” said Santino. “Being able to communicate with neighbors in a language they understand is key to our work in the
communities that make up our municipality. Floating Ideas Fourth-graders at the John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District were posed a question as they gathered together on October 7th: “Can you save Fred?” Students in Lauren LoBello’s, Jean Patterson’s and Nick Assande’s classes participated in the STEAM activity that tested their problem-solving skills. Each group arrived at
their station and found an upsidedown plastic cup covering a gummy ring. On top of the cup was a gummy worm, a.k.a. Fred. The children had to figure out how to get Fred from his boat - represented by the cup - to his life preserver (the gummy ring) using only four paperclips. The children could do anything they wanted to with the paperclips, but couldn’t touch Fred, the boat or the
life preserver with their hands and couldn’t let Fred fall onto the table. They came up with various solutions, and had to record their findings with pictures and words. LoBello said that the activity fostered teamwork and communication skills, and students were encouraged to “think outside of the box.”

In an unprecedented move to further expand the public’s access to municipal government, Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino announced that his administration will provide neighbors with translation services upon request at Hempstead Town Hall. The Supervisor was joined by Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad at a press conference announcing the new program. This important step comes on top of Santino’s much-praised moves to stream town board meetings online, offer sign language interpreters and provide electronic hearing units for neighbors with hearing impairments. “Hempstead Town is America’s largest township and is home to almost 800,000 people with a wealth of different languages, cultures and traditions. I’m proud to take this important step forward to ensure there are no language barriers between residents and municipal government,” said Supervisor Santino. “There is abundant language diversity in my council district,” stated Goosby. “This program will ensure true and

In celebration of Johnny Appleseed’s birthday and the season, kindergarten students in Joan Margolis’ and Dawn Minuto’s class at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School in
Levittown studied apples. After reading several books about this popular historical figure, the students studied the life cycle of the apple and the fall season, learning that
there are more than 7,500 varieties of the fruit. They concluded their unit by voting for their favorite type and assisting in the making of a delicious snack of applesauce.
Supervisor Anthony J. Santino yesterday hosted the Town of Hempstead’s first Italian Heritage Celebration, recognizing outstanding men and women who have dedicated their lives to promoting the great Italian traditions and culture that have helped make our township such a great place in which to live, work and raise a family. “The Town of Hempstead has among the highest populations of ItalianAmericans in the United States,” stated Santino. “From literature, sports, religion, education and medicine to the arts, government, cuisine, business and more, ItalianAmericans have been at the forefront of creating and maintaining our national identity. I am proud to honor several men and women this evening who embody the spirit and dedication of Italian
heritage here in America’s largest township.” This year’s honorees were: Michael Gagliardi, Ex-Chief of the Island Park Fire Department and community volunteer; Rosario and Salvatore Fuschetto, owners of King Umberto Ristorante in Elmont; Dr. Salvatore LaGumina, Director of Italian American Studies at Nassau Community College; Anthony Ponte, President of Atlantic Beach Estates; Carmine Soldano, Past President of the Columbia Police Association and community volunteer; and Tom Valenti, owner of Piccolo’s Ristorante in Bellmore. “I am proud of my Italian heritage and our township’s officials are excited to be celebrating the many accomplishments of those who trace their heritage to Italy,” said Santino. “The
story of Italian immigrants is the story of the United States, a nation built upon the successes of people who have come to our nation, settled and worked to build a beautiful and strong United States of America.” Inspiring ItalianAmerican themed keynote speeches were offered by Dr. LaGumina, an author of books on the Italian American experience, and Michael Bonacasa, President of ItalianAmericans in Government. The Durazzano Society of Westbury provided musical entertainment for the program. “I would like to thank all of our honorees, keynote speakers and the Durazzano Society of Westbury for demonstrating what it means to be an ItalianAmerican in the Town of Hempstead,” concluded Santino.
United Against Bullying In honor of Bully Prevention Day on October 5th, Chatterton School students in the Merrick School District participated in lessons about diversity and taking a stance against bullying. Throughout the school, children unified by wearing blue and learning more about being an upstander. Additionally, all sixth-
graders took part in a “Cross the Line” activity. Assembled in the allpurpose room, students stood against the wall behind an invisible line where a series of statements were read aloud. If a student related to any of the statements, he or she was asked to step forward and cross the line. The initial statements
were icebreakers to make the sixth-graders feel comfortable, and then became more elaborate, focusing on situations of bullying and cyberbullying. Afterward, the group held a debriefing session to discuss how crossing the line made them feel and ways to prevent bullying in the classroom, on the bus and outside of school.

Decorated with colorful ribbon, bright colored paint and jeweled accessories, 35 orange pumpkins were transformed into artwork by members of MacArthur High School’s National Art Honor Society in Levittown.
Under the direction of adviser Tammy Mayer, the art students leant their artistic talents to decorate their gourds to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s breast cancer research and support efforts.
The pumpkins each sold for $10 and assisted in the school’s overall annual Pink Out efforts, which included a volleyball and football game on October 13th and 14th, respectively.

Yana Vilchynskaya, a seventh-grader at Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District, has been named a winner in the America Library of Poetry 2016 National Student Poetry Contest. According to its website, the America Library of Poetry is dedicated to the expression of creativity
through writing and provides an outlet for students to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences. Titled “Accomplished,” this year’s contest invited students across the United States to submit an original 20-line poem on any subject and style they prefer. Vilchynskaya’s poem,
“We’ve Always Been Grown Up,” earned her an Amazon gift card and publication in the 2016 Student Poetry Compilation, which publishes less than 20 percent of all contest entries. The district congratulates Yana on this literary achievement.

A trip to Levittown’s Gardiners Avenue Elementary School’s pumpkin patch, sponsored by the PTA, resulted in Tamara Vining’s first-grade students’ participation in various, fun-filled pumpkin math activities.
After selecting their colorful orange gourds, the students sat down to work by predicting whether their pumpkin would float or sink in a tub of water. They also measured their pumpkins with string and unifix cubes, recorded their
answers on worksheets, and counted the number of veins or lines on their pumpkins. Each of these activities reminded the students that Halloween is just around the corner.

Partners for the Future East Meadow High School senior Sonali Persaud has been selected to participate in the 20162017 Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Partners for the Future program. Partners for the Future provides high school seniors with an opportunity to experience biomedical exploration for seven months by conducting original research under
the guidance of a scientist mentor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. At the conclusion of the program, Persaud will present her research findings to an audience of science students, mentors, CSHL administrators, parents and teachers. East Meadow High School research teacher Ginna Gabalski nominated Persaud for
this opportunity during her junior year. Persaud became a finalist after expressing her academic goals, scientific aspirations and experiences related to medical research through an extensive interview. The district congratulates Persaud on this achievement and wishes her tremendous success in the program.
Festive Fanfare Homecoming was a festive fanfare at Sanford H. Calhoun High School on October 14th when students enjoyed the annual Colt Festival, a pep rally and then football game under the Friday night lights. Spirit Week kicked off the celebration, filling the halls with pajama wearing, patriotic showings and an outpouring of Blue Calhoun gear. “Of course school spirit isn’t just about dressing for a particular day but it is spirit,” said Principal
Nicole Hollings. “When we see students enjoy their time here, when we see all of our students be a part of student life in the building, and when we see students not only cheer each other on in athletics but also in the arts and in their classrooms.” Student athletes stormed the field for the pep rally on Friday afternoon, performing entertaining choreographed skits after they were announced. Ryan Rosenblum and Amanda DePasquale were crowned homecoming king and
queen, respectively. At homecoming, the award-winning wind ensemble performed, as did the rock band, accompanied by some teacher/guitarists. “The football game under the lights, with a full moon, and crisp October air was a back and forth battle in which we ultimately did not win but the crowd was fantastic,” Hollings said. The Colts fell to the Sewanhaka Indians, 35-28.

During the campaign, students learned about the lifelong
health benefits of physical activity, importance of heart health and real-life lessons about volunteering, helping others, leadership and how their actions can help save lives. “Hoops for Heart is a great way to bring students together for a great cause, physical activity and community service,” physical education teacher Eileen Keener said.

Students in the North Bellmore School District have been doing their part to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month by supporting those who have been affected by the disease. The Martin Avenue Elementary School Students Against Destructive Decisions Club hosted its Pink Campaign for Breast Cancer on Oct. 14 by encouraging all students, teachers and staff members to come dressed in that color. Members of the school community
responded by wearing pink shirts, shorts, socks and accessories, and some even dying their hair pink. SADD officers Tyasia Bramwell and Casey McGovern said that they chose the date because it was the last day of school before the annual breast cancer walk at Jones Beach. At Saw Mill Road Elementary School, students in Michelle Mittler’s first-grade class used pink lanyard and white and pink beads to make bracelets for patients undergoing cancer
treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The project had a personal connection for Ms. Mittler, who was warmed by gifts she received from children last year when undergoing treatment for breast cancer. “It brought such a smile to my face that I wanted to do the same,” she said. “I’m hoping that my students can understand how important it is to do something nice for somebody else, and how good that makes us feel.”
Cheerleaders Making Strides
The Division Avenue High School cheerleaders in the Levittown School District attended the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, held at Jones Beach on
October 15th. Wearing their pink “Cheer For A Cure” T-shirts and poms in hand, the girls walked the event’s five miles in support of the society’s breast cancer research, education and critical patient services.
The cheerleaders continue to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research as they spearhead the school’s first Pink Out football game on October 28th.
The East Meadow School District has appointed Arthur Williams as the assistant to the superintendent for administration and special projects, effective September 1st, replacing Patrick Pizzo, who has become the district’s assistant superintendent for business and finance. Williams began his educational career in 2004 as an intern in East Meadow for the assistant superintendent for business. Among his responsibilities, he documented capital equipment to be included in the district budget, reviewed investment procedures, bond reports and state aid reporting, and shadowed the business administrator. He went on to become the district’s internal auditor, processing audits of custodial supplies, payroll, monthly expenditures and budget transfers. He later advanced to assistant business administrator, a position he held for four years in which he reached tenure in the
district and assisted in the development of the district’s school budget. He also closed out energy performance bonds and prior bond construction, as well as supported payroll, technology, transportation and procurement functions. In 2009, Williams became the assistant superintendent of finance and administrative services in the Kings Park Central School District. There, he coordinated, tracked and managed a $76 million general fund budget and was responsible for business functions, operations, noninstructional staff, transportation, school lunch and athletics. Following, he served as the executive director of finance and operations in the West Babylon Union Free School District, coordinating and assisting in the reconstruction of
the South Bay Elementary School after a devastating disaster. He also maintained the district’s business and operational matters. Among his key accomplishments in West Babylon, he refinanced high-interest construction bonds, reducing the bond debt services, increased purchasing efficiencies with cooperative purchasing programs, reduced yearly summer procurement costs, and reduced yearly copier costs. Mr. Williams holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics and political science from York College, a Master of Public Administration in fiscal policy from John Jay College and an Advanced Certificate in School Business Leadership from LIU Post.
