The introduction of “growth mindset” activities has been changing the way fifthgraders at Barnum Woods Elementary School in the East Meadow School District approach learning. Following her research on achievement and success, Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck coined the term “growth mindset” to refer to the underlying belief that one is able to learn and grow mentally by training and strengthening their brain. This is in contrast to a “fixed mindset,” in which one believes that they cannot learn new things and basic traits such as intelligence, character and personality are predetermined. When equipped with a growth mindset, students confront uncertainties and setbacks, see failure as an opportunity to learn, put forth a greater effort to learn and accept criticism as a way to change and grow. During an English language arts lesson, fifth-graders were asked to use their nondominant hand to write their names and the date, draw a selfportrait, and cut and paste objects onto a separate piece of paper. Limited at first by a fixed mindset, the students reported feeling frustrated and unconfident when trying to finish the assignment. When they switched to a growth mindset, however, they embraced the challenge and persevered by understanding that effort and attitude make all the difference. Fifth-grade teachers Laurette Tamburello and Lissette Pellegrino explained that when students believe they can rewire their brains and boost their intelligence, they become more interested in learning and less afraid of facing failure.

Alumni Recognized During Division Avenue High School’s homecoming festivities on October 14th, six alumni from the Levittown School District were officially inducted into the inaugural Levittown Hall of Fame. Surrounded by the Levittown community, administrators, board members and loved ones, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Todd Winch announced each recipient onto the football field prior to the Blue Dragon’s game against the Plainedge Red Devils. “These individuals that we are inducting here today have enhanced Levittown’s special place in history through their accomplishments in many
different ways,” said Winch. “Individuals are selected based on contributions in a variety of areas including music, the arts, science, education, athletics, philanthropy and others.” Inductees from Division Avenue High School included Town Councilman Dennis Dunne Sr. and New York State Supreme Court Justice Thomas Feinman. Dunne was the first elected representative of the 15th Legislative District in the Nassau County Legislature. Among his many roles, he currently serves as president of the Levittown/Island Trees Veterans Council and the president of the Marine Corps Coordinating Council. He is also a
member of the American Legion, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Disabled American Veterans, the Kiwanis Club, the Knights of Columbus, Levittown Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Feinman is currently a justice of the Supreme Court of New York as well as an adjunct professor at Hofstra University in the Department of Accounting, Taxation and Legal Studies. He worked in the office of the Nassau County District Attorney and then in private law firms until 1998, when he was elected as a justice to the Nassau County District Court. After serving six years in the Nassau County courts,
he was elected as a justice to the Supreme Court of New York in 2004. Levittown Memorial High School graduates were also inducted during the special ceremony. Recipients included songwriter Ellie Greenwich, fireman Kevin McKinney, former Town Supervisor Kate Murray and coach Doug Robins. Greenwich was an award-winning songwriter of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s who wrote “Be My Baby,” ‘I Can Hear Music,” “Do Wah Diddy Diddy,” “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “River Deep, Mountain High,” among others. She was also a vocal arranger and backup singer on Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have
Fun.” McKinney joined the Levittown Fire Department at the age of 18 where he was an active member for six years. He was certified as an emergency medical technician and an advanced medical technician. McKinney died in the line of duty at the age of 25 serving the Levittown community. In 1998, Kate Murray was the first woman and first Levittowner to be elected to the New York State Assembly. She served as clerk for the Town of Hempstead and in 2003 was elected as the first female supervisor of the Town of Hempstead. Known as the Father of Levittown Baseball,
Robins was a physical education teacher and the Division Avenue High School baseball coach for 30 seasons. Under his leadership, the baseball program won 654 games overall, two Class B state titles, five Long Island titles, nine Nassau County titles and 24 league championships. Sixteen of his players became professional baseball players and 19 others are now coaches at the high school or collegiate level. Family members of Greenwich, McKinney and Robins were in attendance to accept their award in honor of their memories.

Several students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District were recently named All-State and All-State Alternates by the New York State School Music Association. They will travel to Rochester, New York to participate in the four-day NYSSMA All-State Music Festival that begins on November 30th. All-State designees include Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Adriana Guarascio (All-State Symphonic Orchestra), Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s Julia Bremer (All-State Mixed Choir), Maria Fazio
(All-State Mixed Choir), Doug Gallo (All-State Vocal Alternate) and Ben Shaposhniko (All-State Symphonic Orchestra and All-State Jazz Ensemble Alternate) and John F. Kennedy High School’s Samantha Crichton (AllState Treble Choir), John Duroseau (All-State Mixed Choir) and Kristina Miller (All-State Treble Choir). “In addition to making numerous musical and vocal contributions to their respective high school communities, many of these students also study and perform privately, chasing competitive personal goals and realizing
prestigious performance opportunities,” said Cheryl Fontana, director of fine and performing arts and adult education. Each year in late August, young musicians throughout the state receive the exciting notification that they have been selected to participate in the festival. The All-State selection process begins during the previous school year. To be considered for All-State, students must first be recommended by their music director and perform a Level 6 audition piece at the spring NYSSMA festival receiving a score of 98 or higher.
Army All-American Wantagh High School senior and drummer Jarod Sullivan is one of 101 student-musicians nationwide selected by the U.S. Army to perform during the 2018 AllAmerican Bowl held in San Antonio, Texas on January 6th. Sponsored by American Family Insurance, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl is the nation’s premier high school football game, which features the country’s most talented 100 football players, 101 top marching band musicians and 24 color guard recruits. Members of the U.S. Army All-
American Bowl Selection Tour were on hand during a recruitment ceremony held on October 5th at Wantagh High School to present Jarod with a jacket to commemorate his selection. USAAAB event coordinator and master of ceremonies Daniel Doucette explained that Jarod was selected through the video application process. “This selection tour event is about American youth and the American soldier,” Doucette explained. To Jarod, he said, “It is your dedication, determination, innovation and strength
that provides you with the right to wear the colors of the U.S. Army.” Music teacher Mindy Dragovich congratulated Jarod on this memorable achievement. “You have achieved more than imagined at the high school level,” she said. “Thank you for your leadership and the contribution of your talent.” Jarod will also march in the Macy’s Great American Marching Band during the annual 2017 Macy’s Day Parade in New York City on Thanksgiving Day. Upon graduation, Jarod plans on pursuing a degree in music production.

Reading and Donating Students at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District contributed to a good cause while also improving their literacy skills. To help people affected by Hurricane Harvey, the school hosted a read-athon in September. Students were encouraged to spend at least five minutes a day reading on their own or with a family member. Additionally, they
were asked to bring in personal hygiene supplies and certain food items requested by Island Harvest or to make a donation to the American Red Cross. The students also wrote letters of support to the survivors of the hurricane, which were to be delivered by local firefighters. High school students from the Levittown School District showcased their college readiness as a total of 231 students were recognized by College Board as Advanced Placement Scholars from both Division Avenue and General Douglas MacArthur high school. Students were selected based on their exceptional achievement on the national AP exams. Each year, the College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on a student’s exam performance. AP courses completed with a score of 3 or higher on the final exam may afford students the opportunity to earn
college credit. A total of 121 students from the district were named AP Scholars, 44 were named AP Scholars with Honor, 57 were recognized as AP Scholars with Distinction and nine received the highest honor as National AP Scholars. The AP Scholar Award is earned by students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. Those recognized as AP Scholars with Honor must earn an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. To earn the status of an AP Scholar with Distinction, a student must receive an average
score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. The National AP Scholar title is given to those who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Pirate Pride Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Wellington C. Mepham High School varsity football team advanced to 5-0 this season with a homecoming victory over New Hyde Park Memorial High School on October 6th. Head coach Anthony Cracco led the team to a 35-7 win, and the crowd delivered tremendous energy during the homecoming game. “We have a terrific group of young men working
toward a common goal,” said Cracco. “They have made many sacrifices to improve as a team and achieve a common goal.” Ahead of the game, the Mepham community enjoyed a festival and bonfire. At halftime, the cheerleading squad and Pirette kickliners performed at the midfield line. Tight end James Hatcliffe and Pirette Jordana Bove were crown homecoming king and queen, respectively.
District administrators, Mepham teachers, alumni and Legislator Steve Rhoads were in attendance during the celebration and game. “Pirate pride was at an all-time high at Mepham’s 80th anniversary,” said Principal Eric Gomez. “It’s always remarkable to see the community gather in a sea of maroon to cheer on our students and athletes. We appreciate all of the efforts that helped in making the evening a true victory.”

In honor of Character Education Month, Jonas E. Salk Middle School’s junior leaders in the school’s Respect and Responsibility, Integrity, Safety, Staying Healthy and Empathy Program participated in a video conference program with HEC-TV on October 5th, which focused on the importance of kindness. The students gathered in the school’s library where they video chatted with experts and student groups from around the country on how acts of kindness and culture of kindness can improve quality of life for all. Finding Solutions Martin Avenue Elementary School fifthgraders had to think like environmentalists during a recent activity in which they simulated an oil spill. The project, under the direction of teacher Ashley Evans, supported the North Bellmore School District’s science, technology, engineering, arts and math initiative. Ms. Evans discussed the
oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 and its impact on animals. Students worked in groups and observed a bird feather, then placed it in a cup of oil (cooking oil with cocoa powder) to note the change. They used dish soap to try to clean it off. Following that, students poured the oil into a pan of water. With a sponge, string, cotton balls and a spoon, they had to come up
with an action plan to use those materials to remove the oil. Ms. Evans said that the project taught the children about scientific principles such as density. It also had them work together to come up with solutions and understand how scientists try to fix realworld problems.

Only One You Mandalay Elementary School kindergarten and first-grade students in the Wantagh School District painted rocks to resemble unique and colorful fish after reading Linda Kranz’s “Only One You” about a fish who appears to look different.
PTA parent Kim Sandoval noted that the custodial staff will display the rocks in front of the school for the community to see. During the month of October, the school staff and PTA have worked collaboratively to foster
an environment that embraces each student’s individuality and to build a growth mindset. The activity’s message was that every fish (student) is different, but they all swim (attend class) in the same sea (school).

Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Skull and Bones Drama Club hosted its annual “A Night on Broadway” charity fundraiser revue on October 13th to benefit Laughter Saves Lives Foundation. The charity was created by Mepham parent and fireman John Larocchia after losing 19 of his firehouse brothers, including his best friend, during the September 11th terrorist attacks. The Laughter Saves Lives Comedy Tour became Larocchia’s way of honoring the memories of those who selflessly gave their lives that day to protect and save others. It is his way to “never forget” while also recognizing the local fire, police, EMS and military personnel in the communities the tour group visits. A small portion of the

Colt Pride Shines Colt pride was soaring at the October 13th homecoming festivities at Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Sanford H. Calhoun High School as the football team came out as victors against New Hyde Park High School. During the weeklong festivities, the school’s hallways were decorated and students and staff alike donned the grey and blue school colors. The community was
treated to the annual ColtFest and pep rally before the big game where each sport team announced took over the field for their choreographed routines. “The sports teams had great routines and I loved how each team supported the other,” said Principal Nicole Hollings. “ColtFest was filled with treats and activities leading up to an absolutely incredible performance. Ed Tumminelli and Eric Vivelo directed
the instrumentalists in performing a rousing rendition of the ‘Game of Thrones’ theme and a Green Day song that was just incredible. The sound was thrilling and it set the stage for an outstanding pep rally.” Gabe Wagner and Lauren Ameruoso, who according to Hollings “epitomize the spirit of Calhoun,” were crowned homecoming king and queen, respectively. Dragon Pride Soars apparel, refreshments, held raffles and provided face painting. As part of the school’s annual tradition, the senior flower ceremony was conducted on the football field where seniors from the marching band, football, kickline and cheer teams were announced with their family members. The district also held the second half of their inaugural Levittown Hall of Fame inductions prior to the game. Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Todd Winch announced six Levittown alumni who made a significant impact on the Levittown community and beyond. Honorees included town councilman Dennis Dunne and New York State supreme court justice Thomas Feinman, alumni of Division Avenue High School. Graduates from Levittown Memorial High School included songwriter Ellie Greenwich, fireman Kevin McKinney, former town supervisor Kate Murray and coach Doug Robins.
Four other Hall of Famers were recognized previously during MacArthur High School’s homecoming. During halftime, Principal John Coscia introduced the family of Division Avenue High School alumnus George Muench. The new marching band stand was dedicated in memory of the graduate. Following the dedication, the high school’s awardwinning marching band conducted a “Twilight Zone” performance and the kickline and cheerleaders entertained the crowd with their spirited routines. In addition, the homecoming court nominees were announced onto the field as crowning took place. Dylan Chase and Heather Bonsignore were named homecoming prince and princess while Nick Alvino and Amy Rzemieniewski were recognized as the king and queen. The Blue Dragons worked hard for the win but were ultimately defeated to the Plainedge Red Devils, 42-14.

It was a sea of blue and white at Division Avenue High School’s homecoming on October 14th as the Levittown School District’s administrators, board of education, alumni, staff, students and families gathered for the celebration. Lined up at Wisdom Lane Middle School, the school community held colorful Disneythemed banners and made their way through the parade route to Division Avenue High School. The Division Avenue High School and Wisdom Lane Middle School marching bands played as the high school’s kickline, cheer team, homecoming court nominees, various clubs and inaugural Hall of Fame inductees waved and threw candy as they passed. Before the start of the football game against the Plainedge High School Red Devils, community members were encouraged to stop by the numerous booths outside the entrance of the football field. Wantagh High School senior Erin Hogarty was selected as a Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar Merit Award winner for having demonstrated excellence in drawing and painting. The LIAA Scholar Artists Program is presented by the New York Community Bank Foundation and is produced in cooperation with Newsday. Awards are presented to students in the areas of visual arts, media, dance, photography, music and theater. To receive this designation, the student, as a senior, must be nominated by his or her high school and represent the highest level of artistic excellence. Applicants
must also have maintained an unweighted grade point average of 90 percent or above. Erin‘s previous work was selected for exhibit in LIU Post’s Advanced Visions 13 competition, the Art Supervisor Association’s All-County Art Exhibit and the Heckscher Museum of Art’s Long Island’s Best Exhibit She is also an honorable mention winner in the 2017 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, designed the poster for the high school’s 2017 art show and received a scholarship to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design program over the summer to study
imaginative character design and story telling through 2-D animation. Erin says she is totally invested in her art studies and is currently taking the high school’s new digital animation and screenprinting courses and has completed an Advanced Placement course in art. She intends to major in illustration and minor in animation upon entering college next fall. Random Acts of Kindness Winthrop Avenue School’s Random Acts of Kindness Pack club in the Bellmore School District hosted an “Anything But Food” collection for the victims of 2017 hurricane season. The sixth-grade students collected diapers,
paper towels, cleaners, first aid kits and more for the Nassau County Police Hispanic Society, who spearheaded the community effort, through the Nassau County Police Department’s seventh precinct. RAK Pack adviser

Of Foliage and Fuzzy Friends For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a “furry” pet of some kind, be it a puppy, kitten, bunny, even a guinea pig. Of course, once I moved into my own apartment and realized that such fuzzy companions require far more attention than I, as a full-time member of the workforce, can provide, I settled for my beloved little Buddy the Betta - and, following his passing, my new baby Betta, Norton von Spudly. Not exactly furry, but still fairly entertaining and interactive as fish go. Perhaps I should mention that, in the apartment complex where I reside, one tends to come across all sorts of creatures, from stray cats and kittens wandering the property, to turtles and fish by the pond, robins and blue jays and other assorted winged folk, and even the occasional baby fox roaming near the dumpster. And squirrels. We can’t forget our bushy-tailed friends who spend the majority of the seasons scurrying from tree to tree in search of acorns to munch on and, once the weather begins to turn chilly, store away for winter. My particular building is fairly set apart from the trees and shrubbery which line some of the other, more shaded areas of the complex; however,
Curious how they all happened to “fall” in this one area, I observed one particular squirrel as he made the rounds from branch to branch, fervently shaking each one until he had dislodged each and every nut. Some would fall down below, where he would eagerly gather them and begin digging holes to store them away; the rest, apparently, seemed to settle among my plants upstairs. Each day, I would sweep the acorns off the side of the deck and, peering over the railing, would see my little fuzzy visitor eagerly waiting to collect them. It became something of a routine, and I was only too happy to help him in his pursuit (and clear off my deck in the process). One morning, I awoke to the sound of buzzing and looked outside to see the landscape company trimming many of the trees and shrubs in the area, including “my” tree. Horrified, I looked at the now nearly-barren branches and wondered what had
passed, with still no sign. The next night, when I returned home from work, I decided to dine outside. It was one of those late Autumn evenings when the air was still mild and the sun had yet to set, casting a golden glow over all that the light touched. As I ate, I was startled by the sound of scurrying, and looked up to see my little fuzzy friend scampering up and down the emaciated tree, picking up the acorns that had fallen and galloping down the pathway to bury them in the tiny hole he had dug. I smiled, glad to see he was alright, despite his slightly-mangled home. Not quite a puppy, but a member of the adopted family nonetheless. A few weeks later, it seemed the acorns had all been accounted for. As I watered my mum plants, I saw something wedged between the flowers. Curious, I peered between the stems to find a single peanut shell. I guess this means he’s moving in for the winter.

Director of Guidance Frank Muzio held a congratulatory meeting with the students’ parents, which included Superintendent of Schools John McNamara, Principal Carolyn Breivogel and
assistant principals James Brown and Jennifer Santorello. Michael is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction, co-president of the National Honor Society and president of the National Science Honor Society. He is also a Class of 2018 officer, a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society and a participant on the
Science Olympiad and Rube Goldberg teams. As a trumpeter, Michael is co-president of the Band Council and a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. He also plays varsity volleyball. Olivia is an AP Scholar, president of the Foreign Language Honor Society and co-vice president of the National Honor Society. She is Class

Val & Sal of 2018 President and co-president of the Government Organization where she serves as one of three board of education liaisons. As a finalist in the Trust for Sustainable Living Essay and Debate Competition, Olivia
traveled to Dubai. She has also published three articles in the American College of Cardiology as a result of her research in the district’s Science Research Program. Olivia is also a Science Olympiad participant and a member
of the National Science Honor Society. The district congratulates Michael and Olivia on this outstanding academic accomplishment and wishes them much success during their senior year.

Cancer Awareness In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Wantagh Middle School students have utilized their aptitude for art and sale of goodies to not only raise consciousness of the disease but to make a dent in the funding for medical research. In Jaclyn Gentilesco’s art room, students created self-portraits in the style of Peter Max, which included the study of their individual faces, proportion and shading. The portrait
backgrounds showcased symbolism supporting breast cancer awareness, as well as other causes close to students’ hearts. In addition, art teacher Athanasia Karaiskos’ students created zentangle ribbons to accompany these projects. In Krista Hagan’s class, the students painted, drew or collaged images supporting the fight against breast cancer. All of the artwork was posted on the Artsonia Kids Art Museum website so that parents can purchase
gifts decorated with their students’ designs. Twenty percent of the proceeds are returned to the teachers, which will be donated to breast cancer research. Under the direction of advisers Elyse Brill and Keldya Volpi, student council members also sold confections, pencils and bracelets twice a week after school through the month of October. The proceeds from the sale will be ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH - Wantagh students in the Horizons program are donated to the American assisting the Center for Environmental Research and Coastal Oceans Monitoring with Cancer Association. the hatching and monitoring of horseshoe crab eggs.
