Mixing Fire Safety and Fun Students at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District received important skills in fire safety on Oct. 1, when members of the local East Meadow Fire Department visited as a way to kick off National Fire Prevention Month. Kindergarten and firstgrade students gathered for the first session in the school’s cafeteria, where firefighters broke down
valuable lessons about how to escape a fire. They were advised to set up a meeting spot with their families when they went home later that day. Students were also introduced to what a firefighter looks like in full uniform and gear when they arrive at a house fire. Second-grade students in the building sat for a similar second session, and were then treated to a look at one of the department’s
fire engines outside of the school. Principal Maria Ciarametaro was among one of the faculty volunteers to go up in the engine’s turntable ladder to demonstrate the height that can be reached. Bowling Green and the district thank the local firefighters of East Meadow for taking time to educate the students on valuable fire safety and prevention rules.

Winthrop Students ‘Read S’More’ Winthrop Avenue students in the Bellmore School District have promised to read an additional 15 minutes each day with a partner through participation in the school’s annual Pick a Reading Partner event. The school has set a goal to collectively read an additional 50,000 minutes this month. If they succeed in fulfilling their goal,
Principal Sally Curto will perform a challenge to be revealed later this month. “You need to be dedicated to your commitment to read,” Mrs. Curto told the students. “You become better readers by reading.” To kick off the event, Betsy Isley from the Sagamore Hill National Park Foundation, the home of Theodore Roosevelt, took the students on a camping
exhibition to match this year’s PARP camping theme “Read S’More.” In addition to introducing them to Barb Rosenstock’s book, The Camping Trip That Changed America, about the establishment of the nation’s national parks system, she hosted an activity that introduced the students to the many animals living in national parks.

Kyle Richards’ Hollywood Upbringing and Booming TV Career By Allison Kugel
Real Housewife of Beverly Hills, Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton Rothschild’s aunt; Kyle Richards has emerged as a Hollywood force. She is the breakout star of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, now in its ninth season, and Executive Producer of the new hit television series, American Woman, loosely based on the colorful life of her late mother, Kathleen Richards. Allison Kugel: Your new television show, American Woman, is inspired by your mom’s life. What is the greatest lesson your mom taught you? Kyle Richards: She would always tell me, “If you want something, put it out there and you’ll make it happen.” She would tell me that you have to plant the seeds. When you’re a kid you don’t really understand what that means. Now I realize that everything I was doing my whole life was planting the seeds for what I’m doing now. She told me I could do anything I wanted to if I set my mind to it, and to never take my eye off the ball. Allison Kugel: If she were still here, what do you think she would say about your new show, American Woman, and how she’s portrayed?
Allison Kugel: If you could go back in time, would you choose to be a child actor again? Kyle Richards: Absolutely. I had a
Allison Kugel: You had an unconventional upbringing, as is reflected on this show. What kind of impact did your childhood experience have on what you looked for in a husband and family as an adult? Kyle Richards: I grew up in a house filled with women. My mom, my grandmother, my sisters, my mom’s friends… and my sister Kathy had these two best friends that basically lived at our house. It was like a big sorority house. There was a lot of fun in our house, but then I would go to my friends’ houses and I would see the dad coming home from work and the mom making dinner in the kitchen. I thought, “Oh, those are like the people on TV. Those are fake people.” But I always really admired that, and it was something that I always wanted to have. Allison Kugel: Did you have input into the casting of Alicia Silverstone, who plays the character inspired by your mom?
Kyle Richards: Absolutely. I was involved with every aspect of the show. When I originally met with Alicia, my thought was that the actress we cast had to be a natural redhead. My mom was a redhead and it was a big part of her personality. Alicia loved the script and I thought, “Okay, we’ll have a meeting,” because I love Alicia Silverstone! Who doesn’t love Alicia Silverstone? The second I met her, and I saw how inspired she was to dive into this role, or as Alicia describes it, “this juicy part,” I really felt she was the person to take on the challenge of portraying my mom. Allison Kugel: What was your motivation for signing onto The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in 2010? What did you hope would come from it?

Kyle Richards: [American Woman] was not the goal (laughs). I didn’t realize what the Housewives [franchise] really was when I started doing it. I didn’t understand the opportunities that would come my way. I was acting my whole life, and then I had pretty much stepped aside from that to raise my children. When The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills came up, I looked at it as just another gig. I didn’t know what it was like to do a reality television show, other than seeing my niece Paris [Hilton] do it. I thought, “This is great because it’s reality and my kids can be with me.” I had no game plan at all.
Kyle Richards: In American Woman, they show her working at The May Company, and with that part the writers took creative license. My mom was our manager growing up, because we were all acting in television. She was a single mom raising us. All of a sudden, she found herself in this big house with no husband. Even though we had this nice house in Bel Air, my mom was very strict. We had to make our own beds. When we got cars we were not allowed to go to the car wash, we each had to wash our own car. My kids now go and get their nails done. I wasn’t allowed to get my nails done. I did my own nails.
Allison Kugel: You’d been working in television since childhood, so it made sense to go back to what you knew.
Allison Kugel: I think that part is a generational thing, because I didn’t get my first manicure and pedicure until I was in college.
Kyle Richards: I’ve been doing television since before I could even read. American Woman happened through a fan. My friend came to me and said, “I have these fans of yours who would love to meet you. Would you mind doing lunch?” I agreed because he’s a very close friend of mine. They happened to be the producers of Shameless (on Showtime). At lunch they started asking me what my plans were for after Housewives. I told them I like to write, particularly about having an unconventional upbringing, and I began sharing some stories with them. Then I got a phone call that John Wells (American Woman’s Executive Producer) wanted to make my mom’s story into a television show.
Kyle Richards: Me either. A massage? Are you kidding me? I never had a massage until I was married.
Allison Kugel: What parts of Alicia Silverstone’s portrayal of your mom are accurate and which parts did
Allison Kugel: Do you find it a challenge to keep your kids grounded in Beverly Hills? Kyle Richards: It is a challenge, and the way I deal with that is through having open conversations. I don’t want to be a broken record with my kids because then they’ll stop listening, but I kind of am sometimes. My husband and I always talk about this. When we were first married we were in a very different position. My oldest would say, “When are we going to get a house?,” because we were in a condo. I would explain that we have to make money and save up, and we have to have an extra cushion in the bank. So she would say, “How many cushions do we need?” Allison Kugel: American Woman
takes place in the 1970s, just as the seeds of feminism were starting to take root. It seems that your mom was ahead of her time, in terms of being a feminist more than forty years ago. Kyle Richards: It’s funny you should say that, because my mom did not like the word “feminist.” It had such a negative connotation at the time. Back then, women weren’t supposed to be strong and outspoken. Nowadays it’s somewhat celebrated as empowering for women to be strong. I hope younger women, including my daughters, will see how far we have come and appreciate who they are and the power they have. In my mother’s generation, that was lost. very positive experience as a child actor. I worked with incredible people. A lot of the things I did were in a very family-friendly environment. I got to travel and do exciting things I never would have been able to do if I were a regular child (laughs) living a normal life. I grew up in Bel Air, but obviously my friends weren’t actors. They went to school every day, they went to camp, and did all of those normal things. I didn’t get to do those things, but I was doing other interesting things and traveling. When we filmed Little House on the Prairie, we were filming out in Simi Valley and riding horses and playing in the streams and catching ducks. It was just like going to camp sometimes.

The Wantagh School District will be presenting a special vote on Tuesday, October 23th, for the purpose of expending an amount, not to exceed $800,000, from the community-approved capital reserve fund for the replacement of the original boilers at Wantagh Middle School. Registered voters within the Wantagh School District approved the establishment of a new capital reserve fund this past May for a maximum funding of $7.5 million over 10 years. That proposition authorized the District to set aside funds as needed to pay for security enhancements and building and site improvements.

In June, the board determined that funds should be set aside immediately for the replacement of the original boilers in the Middle School. The estimated cost of this top priority project is $800,000. Funds were set aside in the capital reserve for this project, and voters will now be asked to approve the expenditure of these funds. With voter approval on Oct. 23, the District anticipates that the boiler replacement project will take place next summer. Voting will take place at Wantagh Senior High School, 3297 Beltagh Avenue, Wantagh, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on October 23rd.

Mepham Tree Dedication

The Wellington C. Mepham Community came together on Oct. 3 to dedicate a special spot on the campus to the late Bellmore business owner and former Pirate Roy Weinman. A newly planted tree with accompanying plaque now sits in the school’s courtyard, compliments of the school’s Leo Club, Island Greenery and the Mepham Alumni Association. “It’s moments like these that make me very proud to be a part of the Mepham community,” said Principal
Eric Gomez. Mepham’s first Leo Club is recognized as an official Lion’s Club and is sponsored by the Bellmore chapter. Club adviser Josephine Parlagreco is a Lion herself. “He was the reason for the start of our club,” explained Parlagreco. “He loved community and service.” Weinman’s Hardware was a Bedford Avenue staple from the 1950s until 2014. A graduate of Mepham’s Class of 1941, Weinman and his wife, Myrna, raised four children
in Bellmore – all of whom graduated Mepham as well. “Mr. Weinman was a true Pirate who cared a great deal about Mepham and our community,” added Gomez. “His passing last year affected many in the community, especially his family.” Weinman passed away on July 11, 2017. He was also an active member of the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores and the Bellmore Lions Club and started the latter organization’s flea market.
Bethpage Shines at Homecoming A sun-filled day set the perfect stage for the Bethpage School District to host homecoming on September 29th, and was highlighted by a victory against Floral Park for the varsity football team. The day started as members of the community lined Stewart Avenue for the annual parade. A Bethpage fire department truck led the march as local organizations and student representatives from each class as well as the band, cheerleaders and kickline team drew energy from those in attendance. This year’s homecoming king and queen, Alex Kavazis and Amanda Imbriale,
waved to the crowd as the last part of the procession. Former Superintendent of Schools Terry Clark drove in a golf cart with Director of Athletics John Franchi during the parade to greet those lining the streets. Meanwhile, current Superintendent of Schools David Schneider marched alongside high school principal Nicholas Jantz ahead of the class floats. Following the parade were class skits in the front of the high school. This year’s themes included “Toy Story Seniors,” “Jingle Bell Juniors,” “Storytime Sophomores,” and “Fifties Freshmen” as
the grades performed next to their decorated floats. The band continued to play as attendees made their way to the athletic complex prior to the start of the game. The Golden Eagles varsity football team claimed a 15-7 win against Floral Park to put a cap on the day’s festivities. In addition to enjoying the outcome of the game, fans at the athletic complex were treated to halftime performances by the marching band, the kickline team and the cheerleading squad before the football team posted a shutout in the second half toward the triumph.

STEM Lab Flood Control Lesson Fifth-grade students in the Bethpage School District’s Central Boulevard School took part in a hands-on lesson about flooding on Oct. 2, when they used LEGOs during a unit in the STEM lab. As part of a four-day lesson focused on natural disasters with teachers Allison Robb and Christine McGuire, the students used iPads with Lego WeDo 2.0
software to construct flood gates with Legos that were then programmed to open and close when the water level became too high. The students had the added challenge of incorporating a motion or tilt sensor when the gates were completed. The floodgate building in the STEM lab was day two of the lesson after an introduction lesson on Oct.
1 that included watching videos on flooding caused by recent hurricanes. The day following the gate building, students were tasked with building a Lego helicopter that can drop supplies on a map as well as having the capability of rescuing. The lesson wrapped up on the fourth day with reflection questions on the entire unit.

Helping Long Island Women Cope with Breast Cancer Chris Amato-Smith is helping Long Island women find the strength to fight Breast Cancer, one haircut at a time. Amato-Smith, owner of Top Cuts hair salon in Bethpage, NY, is paying it forward after battling and beating Breast Cancer. Her salon’s annual fundraiser, Cut-A-Thon for Breast Cancer, provides funding for Long Island women who are currently battling Breast Cancer, providing a reprieve from some of their every day responsibilities so they can focus on getting well. To date, Amato-Smith’s hair salon has raised $150,000.00 for the cause, and they are far from done! “While I was going through treatment, a Breast Cancer coalition helped me with their Lend a Helping Hand program. They help women with every day tasks such as meal preparation, house cleaning, transportation
and wigs, just to name a few. Taking some of those every day burdens away means these women can concentrate on getting well.” Now in its 10th year, Amato-Smith’s Cut-AThon designates one day a year where 100% of all proceeds received for the day’s beauty services go towards assisting women on Long Island who are currently battling Breast Cancer. Valedictorian and Salutatorian Graduation is months away, but Wantagh High School announced Samantha Minars and Andriana Patmanidis as the Class of 2019’s valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Keeping with Warrior tradition, the students were congratulated during the morning announcements, and while accompanied with parents and faculty, took an official photo in front of the school sign as it flashed the good news. “Enjoy the moment and the year to come,” Principal Carolyn Breivogel said to Samantha and Andriana. “This is a special year for both of you.” Samantha is treasurer of the National Honor Society and a member of both the World Language and science honor societies. She was recently designated as a National Merit Semifinalist, is an Advanced Placement
Scholar with Honor and a recipient of the Oberlin College Book Award for excellence in science. In addition to playing varsity tennis and badminton, Samantha participates in extracurricular activities as treasurer of the Science Olympiad team, a peer leader and member of the Class of 2019 organization. She is also a counselor with Camp Achieve during the summer and assists with her family’s annual Haunted House Charity project to benefit the International Red Cross and UNICEF. She plans on studying biomedical engineering next fall. Andriana is co-president of the National Honor Society and a member of the science and World Language honor societies. She was recently designated as both an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor and as a National Merit Scholar Program

Andriana is an avid artist and, in addition to taking digital/graphic art and AP 2D graphic design, has participated in the Olympics of the Visual Arts competition for three consecutive years. Other extracurricular activities include tutoring peers, mathletes competitions, and holding the positions of Team A captain and president of Science Olympiad, as well as vice president of International Outreach. Another interesting fact is that Greek is her first language. Andriana plans on pursuing a career in either biomedical engineering or pre-med next fall.

Family Learning Experience Classrooms were buzzing at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District on October 11th for the annual Open School Day. Parents were invited to participate with their children in hands-on activities that were held throughout the day. Many teachers planned fall-themed projects. For a literacy activity, Mary Carrea’s firstgraders and their parents made a witch’s brew by naming ingredients along with describing words. Students in Susan Wells’ first-grade class and their guests used toothpicks and marshmallows to make houses for ghosts. She said she hoped the activity would inspire them to continue creating at home using common household items. In third-grade classes, each group was tasked with building either a flying bat, a pumpkin, a haunted house, a skeleton or a spider. They could accomplish the task using only provided materials
such as cotton swabs, pipe cleaners, construction paper and aluminum foil. Fourth-graders read Halloween riddles, made inferences, and scanned QR codes using iPads to check their answers. That followed a mindfulness breathing exercise.
Second-grade students and their parents participated in a math activity. They used triangular pieces called Tangrams to make various shapes and pictures and complete a series of challenges. “It’s always nice when
the parents come in and experience school alongside their children,” said Principal Leyna Malone. “The teachers planned many engaging, hands-on activities that made this an exciting day for everyone.”

The Cougar Nation at John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central School District had quite the cause for celebration at their Oct. 13 homecoming game, as their football squad shut out opponents, Sewanhaka High School, 32-0. The Friday night lights game followed an afternoon festival that included various club booths, face painting, inflatables, live music and more. “I was so proud to see such a tremendous amount
of school spirit and pride,” said Principal Gerard Owenburg. “Spirit week was a fun filled week for our students, who created some lifelong memories. The traditional bonfire was held on the baseball field just before the game. Kennedy cheerleaders invited youth from the Braves cheer squad on the sidelines for a performance. Both the cheerleaders and kickline entertained the audience during halftime. Charlize Deluca and Dean Tsolkas were crowned
homecoming queen and king, respectively. The band, led by Walter Avellandeda, pumped up the crowd throughout the evening. Once again a raffle was held each quarter, giving students the opportunity to sit on a couch for four along the sidelines — complete with seat-side service from the C.H.A.M.P. (Culinary and Hospitality Applied Management Program) chefs.
Nassau BOCES Grants for Students Nassau BOCES employees were awarded grants, totaling nearly $50,000, through the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation. The grants will be used to purchase a 3-D printer, watches and timers, a Zenergy Ball Chair, master classes from professionals, a Sensory cart along with other projects. “Over the years we have supported a lot of highly exciting projects that have had an impact on our students,” said Dr. John Gangemi, Foundation Chairperson. “A total of 273 grants totaling over $400,000 have been awarded since the inception of this program in 2007.” Students at Jerusalem Avenue Elementary School will benefit from a grant to buy Zenergy ball chairs to help with their movement
and balance. “These adaptive chairs will help to improve student attention and focus,” said Nicole Rosamilia, Occupational Therapist and grant recipient. “Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) students will have the opportunity to learn from professionals from the American Ballet Theater residency and the Roundabout Theatre Lighting Design program, thanks to grants from the Foundation,” explained Jerry Nobile, instructor at the school. The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation is a nonprofit organization supporting initiatives beyond the scope of the agency’s budget. The organization raises funds through events, such as its annual gala, recognizing honorees of the Nassau
BOCES Education Partner awards program. Now in its eighth year, the awards program honors people and organizations that share Nassau BOCES’ commitment to public education. “This foundation is a fine example of an extended family. The resources help to supplement what we do here at Nassau BOCES,” said Dr. Robert R. Dillon, Nassau BOCES District Superintendent. Grant-funded teaching innovation is just one way the agency fulfills its goal to ensure student success. Celebrating Parent Volunteers been responsible for raising money for playgrounds, helping to donate money to schools in need, rebuilding the school’s front lawn sign and many other initiatives. During the surprise honoring ceremony, all students at Barnum Woods gathered to thank and greet Mr. Rothman while the Student Council Advisory Board presented him with thank you cards, letters and a cake. Barnum Woods Principal Greg Bottari led the ceremony as many community members joined the students in thanking Mr. Rothman for his continued service.
During the ceremony, students were led by music teacher Meegan Coleman in the singing of “Thank You for Being a Friend,” by Andrew Gold while PMT Coordinator Melody Schillen presented Mr. Rothman with a plaque of congratulations. “Volunteering for 10 years is an amazing individual accomplishment, but 25 years is unheard of,” said Bottari. Everyone Needs A Little TLC
Teamwork, synergy and continuous improvement were three core values that Bellmore’s Shore Road School students in Phinola Baeza’s class needed to build a bridge out of gumdrops and toothpicks that was strong enough to
hold a notebook. In order to accomplish their goal, teams of students brainstormed and planned how to construct the bridge. During the construction, they were careful to list their successful team strategies,

problems, constraints and obstacles. Upon completion of the task, the teams explained and drew how their final structure differed from the original design.
East Meadow High School seniors helped sixth-grade students at Woodland Middle School create a positive and bullyfree school environment by accepting and participating in Rachel’s Challenge on October 11th. Rachel’s Challenge was established following the 1999 tragedy at Columbine High School. The mission of the challenge is to inspire and equip every person to create a permanent, positive change in their school through assemblies, team building exercises and the acceptance of others. The nonprofit organization is led by Darrell and Sandy Scott, in memory of their daughter, Rachel. The day of the challenge began with an assembly for the sixth-graders to
explain Rachel’s story of spreading kindness, dreaming big and starting a chain reaction of positive change. Following the conclusion, the students were asked to fulfill five goals during the school year: look for the best in other, dream big, choose positive influences, speak with kindness and start your own chain reaction. During the final two class periods of the day, seniors from East Meadow High School visited sixth-grade classrooms to conduct lessons that incorporate Rachel’s Challenge. The lessons started with sixth-graders introducing themselves while also adding a fun fact about their personality. The senior leaders then asked each class if they accept Rachel’s Challenge

for the upcoming school year. The lesson proceeded with the task of having each student receive their act of kindness sheets signed by a different student. The activity helped to enforce the ways students can be kind and inspire positivity. The lesson in each classroom concluded with a video compilation of movie scenes, speeches and interviews that demonstrated various ways of how to create a positive environment and a slide on how to be a good example at school. The district thanks the seniors from East Meadow High School for taking the time to demonstrate the importance of kindness and positivity to the sixthgraders!

Advanced Science Research students in 11th and 12th grades at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District were invited by the Hofstra University provost to attend their annual Faculty Research Day the last week in September. After a brief campus tour, students were given an opportunity to interview Hofstra professors about
their research interests. The presentations included STEM fields along with other disciplines in the humanities. “More importantly, many of the professors expressed to our teachers how impressed they were with our students,” said Science Chair Patrick Mannion. Accordingly, Mepham was invited back again next year. Also, Mepham was the only high school invited to this special event.

Making Students’ Mental Health a Top Priority As the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District continues to focus on meeting the needs of the whole student, the rebranded school counseling and wellness centers formerly known as the guidance office - included redesigned suites with additional offices, and meeting spaces within the three high schools. Born from Superintendent John DeTommaso’s theme for this school year, “Where Wellness Matters,” the district “will be extending our commitment to every student’s academic, social and emotional well-being by offering extended hours at our school counseling and wellness centers.” Students and/or parents can meet with a school psychologist, school counselor or social worker regarding concerns such as academic, social and/ or emotional needs, or post-high school planning; as well as participate in professional development sessions for parents. “We will continue to practice self-care and maintain a positive outlook to ensure
positive outcomes for our students,” said Wellington C. Mepham High School Principal Eric Gomez. “There is nothing more important to me than students that are feeling happy to be in school and fully enjoying their high school experience,” added John F. Kennedy Principal Gerard Owenburg, who has encouraged staff to make more personal connections with students this school year. Seven pupil personnel team staff members were hired as well. “We are doing what we can to have more contact with students, as well as lowering the studentto-counselor ratio,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mara Bollettieri. The counseling and wellness centers will be open on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 5 p.m. every Wednesday. Different staff members from the district’s pupil personnel team, including counselors, social workers and psychologists, will be staying after school to help assist students and families with additional academic, social and
emotional needs. Each building also has an onsite supervisor/assistant principal overseeing the department. Future plans include contracting with South Oaks Hospital to provide a visiting psychiatrist and psychiatric social worker several hours each week within the district to complete referrals for students. “For our kids who may have experienced a psychiatric crisis, a lot of parents want to follow up. However they often must navigate healthcare provider and insurance obstacles,” said Eric Arlin, director of special education and pupil personnel services. “This referral service will assist parents with insurance coverage information, as well as connect families to outside help through our school counseling and wellness centers.” Although students may drop in, an appointment is recommended. The district plans on rolling out this program at the middle school level in early 2019.

Hearts of Gold Kennedy High School’s Leadership class and social studies teacher Kara McManus organized a schoolwide participation in the Whip Pediatric Cancer – Heart of Gold program. This program raises awareness and funds for pediatric cancer. “Last spring, student Carli Surkis first introduced the program to
our Leadership Class and promoting it in September made sense since it is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month,” explained McManus. “With great energy and enthusiasm Carli was able to motivate Leadership students to sell and decorate the Hearts of Gold currently on display in our school. All of the Leadership students did
an amazing job with this fundraiser.” Kennedy students and staff wore gold for Pediatric Cancer Awareness month and each individual that donated displayed a gold heart on the courtyard windows. They raised more than $800 for the program.

East Broadway Elementary School secondgraders in Jennifer Nadolny and Marie Johnson’s class celebrated the beginning of Fall with a trip to the Outdoor Learning Center, held at the Levittown Memorial Education Center, on September 26th. Facilitated by Outdoor Learning Center teacher Jessica Mills, the class learned about the difference between edible
corn and holiday corn in an engaging lesson. S t u d e n t s transformed into scientists as they took turns observing the two different corn kernels under a microscope. They then wrote down their observations in a packet, describing and drawing how each kernel looked up close. With the sun shining down, the class ventured outside as Mills
walked them over to the greenhouse. Outside of the greenhouse students had the opportunity to touch a growing pumpkin in the pumpkin patch, look at live corn stalk and observe a caterpillar up close. They walked through the greenhouse where Miller explained the vegetation growing and exited to the Outdoor Learning Center’s pond where students observed the fish.
Inspired by Rosie the Riveter Inspired by Rosie the Riveter, the inspirational World War II icon who represented women working in the nation’s factories and shipyards, Winthrop Avenue fourth-grade students in Bellmore utilized their individual interpretations of inspirational quotes, teamwork and synergy to create a piece of art. In order to create a positive and encouraging classroom learning environment, the students first discussed a variety
of inspirational quotes and wrote about or drew what their favorite quote means to them. They also discussed and brainstormed how they can inspire and motivate each other throughout the year. During a collaborate art project, each student filled a piece of a stenciled Rosie the Riveter mosaic with inspirational quotes and words brainstormed during their discussion. Once glued together, the end product became an inspirational masterpiece
that will remind the students of how they can work together to create synergy in their learning environment and inspire peers. Ms. Buckley said, “We continuously reflect on the Rosie the Riveter masterpiece, which hangs in our classroom throughout the school year, when we need to persist or push ourselves to try something that seems difficult.”
