Recess just got a little bit better at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District with the recent installation of two new pieces of playground equipment. A multi-year fundraising effort by the PTA generated approximately $20,000 which covered the cost of materials, installation and
wood chip surface. The project was spearheaded by the PTA executive board of Theresa Campbell, Heidi Hannula, Nicole Haugh, Pam Ricotta, Diane Visone and Sal Visone. Principal Denise Fisher said that children are enjoying the new equipment which includes a tri-totter and a ten spin. The tri-totter is a
reimagined teeter-totter that adds an extra seat and an extra path of motion, while the ten spin is an inclusive motion spinner that can hold up to 10 children. These pieces are in addition to the existing rock wall, seesaws, slides, steps and swings to give children plenty of options for play.

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

They were able to genetically engineer bacteria with the Green Fluorescent Protein gene, harvested from jellyfish. These genes allowed the genetically engineered bacteria to glow in a process known as bioluminescence. “This is a great opport-
unity for our middle school students to get real handson experience in a genetics lab, and gives them a great understanding of real life science research,” explained Michael Hughes, a district science chairperson.

Four talented studentmusicians from the Levittown Public Schools recently received honors from the New York State School Music Association. General Douglas MacArthur High School senior Paul Giorlando will play the trumpet in the symphony orchestra and junior Emily Zhang
will play the Bb clarinet in the wind ensemble at the annual NYSSMA AllState Winter Conference in Rochester from Dec. 5-8. In addition, Division Avenue High School junior Danielle Tear and General Douglas MacArthur High School senior Valerie Thomas were selected as alternates for cello.
Students earned the prestigious honor to perform in these ensembles based on NYSSMA auditions last spring during solo and ensemble festivals. The district congratulates all four student-musicians on this outstanding achievement.

PARP is a New York State PTA Program, which encourages parents, staff and community to collaborate in the building of a reading partnership between home and school and to motivate students to love reading. This year’s theme is “Reading Can Inspire,” and students are encouraged to read at least 15 additional
minutes each day. A kickoff assembly with the Bodacious Book Show: Have You Read It? Game Show set the tone for the event on Oct. 11. With student participation, Christopher and Lorraine Agostino of Agostino Arts helped the students to recall the names and authors of some of their favorite books and even asked for recommendations. The student-volunteers also acted out a loose and funfilled version of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” Accompanying PARP
activities include students showcasing their favorite books, inspiring books and book-to-film blockbusters on the “Bookflix” bulletin board. A Google form survey asks students to list their favorite book quotes. Students are also naming their favorite quotes on the PARP bulletin board and creating a template for recommendations to be placed in a special binder in the library. There is also a raffle for prizes which include new books, Scholastic Fair bucks and Barnes & Noble gift cards.

Senior Garners Global Magazine Art Honors Wantagh High School senior Athena Yao was one of 10 recipients of a 2019 Skipping Stones Youth Honor Award presented by “Skipping Stones” magazine for promoting art with an understanding of cultural diversity. In addition, the recently-named and talented Congressional Art Competition winner was profiled in the Autumn 2019 edition of the magazine in an article titled “Athena Yao’s Art,” which discusses through her artwork a search for
identity in the midst of adolescence. “Skipping Stones” is a global, multicultural literary magazine for youths age 8-16 which publishes art and original writings in all languages, celebrates ecological and cultural diversity and facilitates a meaningful exchange of ideas and experience for its readers. In her “Skipping Stones” profile, Athena talks about how conforming to others’ standards and constantly hiding one’s true feelings leads to dissatisfaction and
unhappiness. “I’ve found that the path to authentic happiness begins when we start to look inside ourselves and consider the question of who we are and why,” she said. Athena will receive five multicultural and/ or nature books and a subscription to “Skipping Stones” magazine, in addition to an honor certificate.
