Pizza Making Celebration In celebration of National Pizza Month, first- and second-grade students at Forest Lake Elementary School in the Wantagh School District learned to make pizza with English muffins. Prior to their cooking lesson, the students in

Patricia McDonnell’s class listened to the popular folktale The Little Red Hen and discussed the characters, setting, conflict and solution. Using the Smart Board, the class also read a recipe for English muffin pizza published in the online newspaper

“news2you.” Donning white chef’s caps, the students took turns making their pizza with sauce, cheese and pepperoni. Some even tried anchovies on their pizza, just like the little red hen in the story.

A BIRTHDAY GIFT

Approximately 100 students in grades K-5 at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District received certificates for participating in the school’s summer reading program. At a special bagel breakfast on October 10th,

students were recognized for their commitment to remaining active readers during the summer season. Depending on their grade level, students decided to read anywhere between three and 10 books from the suggested reading list and completed a Bookworm Log that they

brought back to school at the start of the new year. Students who decided to go above and beyond also completed projects for several of their books. The projects, which included posters, dioramas, story mobiles and more, are on display in the school’s hallway.

Make Time To Spend A Moment With Family

As we head into the holiday season, it is crucial to realize just how caught up we can get in the trickor-treating, gift buying and pumpkin carving. Sure, these things are important, but the true measure of a successful holiday is the quality of the memories we create with our family. Some of my fondest memories took place around a Christmas Tree. Others derived from the carving of the turkey. More still were captured while dressed up in Halloween garb with my mom, dad and little brother. I vividly remember being carried in my father’s arms, dressed as a pumpkin, while my brother was in

Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts… We always think it’s not going to happen here. Whatever “it” is, we have grown so used to absently

observing most catastrophes from a distance, never foreseeing the day when they will wind up right in our own backyards. Literally. Some people lucked out. Others were not so fortunate, and will spend the next few weeks and months – years even – cleaning up all that was left behind, however little it may be. They say someone always has it worse off than you, and this is true. Except in this case, many of those most devastated happen to be our family members, friends and neighbors – the worst off of whom don’t even have a home to go back to. As with all events of this magnitude, peoples’ true colors tend to shine through, for better or worse. Here in the Long

Island/New York City area, we have witnessed a bit of both. But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos. Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist. Let’s all hang in there. Together, we can – and will – get through this. And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.

Weber, Marx and countless other sociologists have their own view on the family unit. All of them unanimously agree that, without those related to us by blood, we would be nothing. Keeping in contact with those we care about is especially crucial around the holidays. Throughout all of the gift-giving and traditions, find time to spend a moment with those you love, your family.

Each phone collected by the Grand Avenue students, along with the

others collected through the program, will be sent to a cell phone recycling company which will make a donation to the “Cell Phones for Soldiers” program for each donated phone. The donations will be used to purchase calling cards for overseas soldiers to call their loved ones in the United States. To date, Senator Fuschillo’s “Cell Phones for Soldiers” program has raised over 160,000 minutes of calling time for soldiers and their families.

Elementary school students in the East Meadow School District recently learned important lessons about fire prevention and safety from local fire departments. During assemblies at Parkway Elementary School, members of the Wantagh Fire Department spoke with students about fire detectors and home escape plans and stressed that if they ever see or suspect a fire, they should call 911 immediately. Afterward, enthusiastic thirdand fourthgraders visited the fire department’s smoke house, a trailer designed to resemble a bedroom. Inside the smoke house, artificial smoke filled the air as an alarm buzzed to indicate a house fire. A firefighter directed each student to roll out of bed, move toward the door to feel for heat and push the window open. Each student then screamed

for help, and a firefighter stationed on the outside assisted them with their escape. Other East Meadow elementary schools hosted fire prevention assemblies and events as well. The East Meadow Fire Department recently met with Meadowbrook Elementary School students to discuss fire safety. Ex-captain Peter Cheswick and fellow firefighters reviewed fire equipment and emergency escape routes and provided students with tips on being safe in the event of a fire. Firefighters also briefed

students on how to “stop, drop and roll.” After presentations, students gathered in front of the school to view fire trucks and learn how they are used for emergency situations. McVey and Barnum Woods elementary schools also hosted fire safety assemblies. At McVey, members of Brownie Troop 1510 – composed of firstgrade McVey students – met with members of the East Meadow Fire Department. Barnum Woods was visited by the East Meadow Fire Department as well. FAMILY REUNION - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray presented an official Town of Hempstead Citation to Pastor Ron Garner of Wantagh in fitting recognition of the “Family Reunion” 125th Anniversary Party of the Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church in Wantagh. The Bar/Bat Mitzvah Planning Event

In an effort to get its students excited about school, learn the rules of the bus, reiterate its code of conduct and welcome kindergarten students into the Rising Star program, the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore will host its annual Rising Star Pep Rally. To begin the pep rally, the students and their teachers were seated in five different areas of the school’s auditorium from which they sang and cheered for the specific Bellmore core value they represented – integrity, respect, dedication, trust or teamwork. Dressed as characters from Disney’s “Aladdin,” staff members performed a play illustrating all of the rules of the road and school to the kindergarten, first- and second-grade students. Written by school psychologist Elise Cahill, the play was set at Reinhard and reinforced the district’s character education program. “The play went over, in a kidfriendly way, our core values, as well as touched upon the Dignity for All Students Act, which is our anti-bullying program,” said Ms. Cahill. Added Principal Patricia Castine, “The faculty are truly committed to the core values and bullying prevention. In order to address bullying, we try to imbed our core values and character education into all that we do, from classroom lessons to morning announcements.”

1.5 million students took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October. Of all test takers only 34,000 have been awarded the designation of Commended Student. In addition to these five students, Brandon Khoury of Bay Shore was named a 2013-2014 Scholar by the National Hispanic Recognition Program for Excellence in Academic Achievement. The National Hispanic Recognition Program is administered by the College Board and selected 5,300 Hispanic/Latino students from a pool of over 259,000 based on a combination Preliminary SAT scores a grade point average. “The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC.
