Supporters of CAPS teed off against child abuse and neglect at the 16th Annual Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) Golf Outing at The Mill River Club in Oyster Bay raising $60,000 to benefit the CAPS Bully Prevention Center and CAPS’ prevention through education programs. The event also saw the presentation of the 9th Annual John Davis Memorial Award to two long-time CAPS supporters, volunteers and past presidents of the CAPS Board of Directors, Nancy Greulich (Plainview) and Susan Silverman (Manhasset Hills). Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing. Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well. Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.

Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time. I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge. I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming

over his tropical sanctuary. And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me? Can I have some? Please?? And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish. I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes. In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

Runaway Success

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, hosted its “Walk, Run & Ride for Autism,” on October 12th at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raised nearly $60,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said co-chair of the event Charley Hudson. “This year we not only met that goal, but we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come together and lend themselves to help benefit thousands of Long Islanders.” Hundreds of Long Islanders came out for the fun filled day. The day kicked off with the 5K Fun Run followed by a scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park that featured activities for the entire family along the way. For the third year in a row, the event included a Motorcycle and classic car run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. Also, another new feature was a live performance by students enrolled in the All Music’s Rock-n-Roll University, including numerous individuals with disabilities receiving services from DDI. The day was capped off with a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. This year’s event Grand Marshals were seven extraordinary people who for the second year in a row, spent one week walking 128-miles from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in order to benefit DDI. Raising over $40,000 from both walks, Nathan Holmes, John Kenny,

Apple Fun Kindergarten students in Lynne Adam’s class at Forest Lake Elementary School in Wantagh enjoyed a weeklong unit exploring the properties of apples. The students experimented with whether their apples would float or sink. Then they sorted their apples according to various attributes,

compared their apples and graphed the similarities and differences. They also tasted a variety of apples, voted on their favorite type and created and labeled apple diagrams. The favorite activity of the week, however, was making homemade applesauce. The apples were cooked in water and the class discussed how

heat made the properties of the apples change. Using a Foley’s Food Mill, the students also assisted in the process of pressing the apples and separating the core, seeds and skin from the sauce. Finally, the class tasted its creation and enjoyed their favorite fall treat.

The Kennedy Cougars football team took on Jericho High School in a rare night game for Kennedy, as lighting stands, which were donated by the Town of Hempstead, ran on generators throughout the game. This year, the Homecoming game was rescheduled to accommodate the field’s preparation. The halftime show featured the girls’ varsity cheerleading squad, the kickline and the Kennedy High School band. At midfield Kennedy also crowned its 2014 Homecoming King and Queen, Reid Bachman and Sara Coluccio, respectively. The runnerup candidates for King and Queen included Jake Gumpel, Eddie Koton, Jack Rosenzweig, Amanda Cammiso, Rebbeca Greenstein and Shellie Mittleberg. After an intense matchup that went into overtime, the Cougars fell to Jericho 22-14. In attendance for the event was Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Superintendent John DeTommaso, Kennedy High School Principal Lorraine Poppe with Assistant Principals Jon LaRochester and Eileen Connolly, and Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Board of Education Trustees Dr. Nancy Kaplan, Janet Goller and Susan Schwartz.
