he W.T. Clarke High School football stadium was a sea of maroon and school spirit as the Rams defeated Valley Stream South, 42-20, during Clarke’s homecoming. After the first half of the game, the W.T. Clarke varsity cheerleaders, marching band and color guard gave a showstopping performance for the crowd. At the rear of the parade, seniors Jesse Goodman and Jarielys Quijano waved as they were recognized as homecoming king and queen.

Recording observations of living specimens found in pond water and not readily seen with the naked eye resulted in excitement and awe for Levittown fourth-grade students from Northside School, who received a science lesson from Outdoor Learning Center teacher Jessica Mills. The students first learned about the parts of a microscope and were taught to create a wet mount slide, utilizing droplets of water drawn from the Outdoor Learning Center’s pond. After viewing living specimens placed under a microscope, the students were instructed to record their observations and identify the organisms seen on their slides. Levittown’s Outdoor Learning Center is located at Levittown Memorial Education Center and includes a pond, greenhouse and gardens in which students can experience science first hand. The center is also equipped with an adjacent lab to allow for preparation and follow up to outdoor activities.

She was very easy to talk to. There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

GET TO KNOW THE NEW

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

Tackling Adversity Paralympic athlete Dennis Oehler led an assembly for fifth-graders at Birch School in the Merrick School District at the end of September to educate them about individuals with disabilities and to share his own story, including showing them his prosthetic leg. Mr. Oehler was an allstar athlete committed to becoming a professional soccer player when he

was in a car accident that required amputation of his leg below the knee. Through perseverance and hard work, he overcame adversity and pursued his dream of being an all-star athlete. Introduced to the Paralympic Games by a friend, Mr. Oehler was astounded by the athleticism, spirit and ability these individuals exhibited. Inspired by what he had seen, he competed in the

Students Selected for All-State Seven students from the East Meadow School District have been recognized by the New York State School Music Association for their outstanding musical talents and chosen to perform in the All-State Festival at NYSSMA’s 81st annual Winter Conference from December 1st-4th. An additional six East Meadow High School students were named alternates. More than 6,500 sophomores and juniors in New York State performed

in NYSSMA solo evaluation festivals last spring in the hopes of being selected for All-State. To qualify, students had to receive a score between 98 and 100 on their solo performance, judged by a NYSSMA AllState adjucator. From W.T. Clarke High School, Alby Joseph will perform the violoncello in the symphony orchestra; Juan Lucas Orozco, tenor II in the mixed choir; and Emily Shaiman, jazz soprano in the vocal jazz ensemble.

From East Meadow High School, Kevin Martin has been selected to perform double bass in the string orchestra; Jolie Rebelo, violin for the symphony orchestra; Alissa Rojas, alto I for the mixed choir; and Won Son, contrabass clarinet for the symphonic band. The SED identifies Reward Schools as those ranking among the top 20 percent in English language arts and mathematics assessment performance, having a graduation rate above 80 percent, and obtaining the most progress and/ or highest achievement in the state without significant gaps in student achievement. East Meadow and W. T. Clarke high schools are among 365 schools in New York State to receive this notable designation. “This is an outstanding award and recognition by New York State that both of our high schools received,” said Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Several recognitions were made during the September 29th communication meeting of the East Meadow School District Board of Education. Among them, the board recognized resident Fred Morgana for his service in World War II; East Meadow and W.T. Clarke high schools as 2016 Reward Schools; and Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance Patrick Pizzo for leading the green cleaning initiative in the district. The meeting opened with the W.T. Clarke High School Brass Ensemble performing musical numbers, including “The Star-Spangled Banner,” for the board of education members, administrators, faculty and community members gathered at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center. The evening proceeded with the honoring of Morgana, a resident of East Meadow for more than 60 years, member of the East Meadow Fire Department and WWII U.S. Navy veteran, with the Distinguished Service Award. At the October 6th Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education meeting, Immanuel Mellis was recognized for being named a 2016 Young Composer by the New York State School Music Association. “Immanuel Mellis is a wonderful young man and student who is mature beyond his years,” said Board President Janet Goller during his introduction. “His qualities of self-sufficiency and independence will translate beautifully to his post-secondary school of choice, which currently includes options such as: Julliard, Northeastern University, and Oberlin

College & Conservatory. Immanuel has applied a confident sense-of-self to every task and activity that he engages in, setting goals and achieving each and every one of them.” Fulfilling a full, rigorous academic schedule all four years of high school, Mellis has always applied himself wholeheartedly to his academic commitments. He has always made sure to take advantage of the countless elective, college, honors and AP level opportunities available at Mepham High School. Additionally, Immanuel is completing science research in Music Conceptualization and investigating a sociopsychological approach

to music. This research focused on how human beings cognitively interpret music rhythms. “Immanuel is an incredible, multi-talented musician and composer,” said Goller. “As the viola section leader in the Mepham String Ensemble, he is one of its brightest stars. His latest composition earned him a spot to have his piece performed at the NYSSMA All-State Conference in December. This is a huge honor, as only 14 students were selected from the state. He will be composing and conducting a piece for the Mepham String Ensemble this year.”

Volunteer Recognized Kristina Spano, a senior at Division Avenue High School in Levittown, was the recipient of the Youth Recognition Award for Volunteerism. Presented by the Levittown Community Council, the award recognizes students who continually give back to their community through volunteering.

Kristina served as the junior class vice president during the 2015-2016 school year and is currently the senior class president. In addition to her student council positions, Kristina played an active role in the annual food drive, Spirit Week, Spirit Night, and as a member of the school’s Peer Pals.

Young Composer

Reflecting on her award, Kristina said, “This award showed me how I can expand my role to the whole community and encourages me to grow as a leader.” The Levittown School District congratulates Kristina on this accomplishment.

Hands-On Education Newbridge Road Elementary School students and their parents in the North Bellmore School District made memories together, participating in various hands-on activities for “Sit in Your Child’s Seat Day” on October 6th. Each student welcomed one special guest their mother, father, a grandparent, and aunt or uncle - to participate in a special activity planned by their teacher. Both sixthgrade classes gathered together in the auditorium

for a STEAM project, the Peep Challenge. Every group of children and adults was tasked with building one contraption, including a Peep launcher, catapult, mobile and bridge. They could only use the materials provided, including marshmallow Peeps and ordinary objects such as cardboard rolls, straws, spoons, rubber bands, tape and glue. The project fostered creativity, teamwork and problemsolving skills as each group built, tested and refined their creations. Students

recorded the results, and shared their findings and their finished products. Other activities that day included a pumpkin sink or float activity in kindergarten, writing and leaf-making in first grade, creating tic-tac-toe boards of memories in second grade, studying the surface tension and chemical makeup of coins in third grade, a study of the Iroquois Indians in fourth grade, and math games in fifth grade.

Finding Green Thumbs Students in third and fifth grade at Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District are learning the fundamentals of vegetables, gardening, sustainability and healthy eating through the school’s first garden education enrichment program. With the help of Green City Growers, a Massachusetts-based urban farming company, the students visit the outdoor classroom weekly to participate in hands-on gardening activities. They learn about the anatomy of

plants by examining their leaves and roots, determine which insects are harmful and which are beneficial for the garden, and witness the dedication and time fruits and vegetables need to grow, all while making an ecologically friendly impact on the earth. The students are involved in every stage of production, from designing raised beds with specific soils and establishing irrigation tracks to harvesting a variety of vegetables and herbs. They also learn to

maintain pest- and insectfree gardens by spraying natural pesticides and building fences to prevent critters from eating the vegetation. The garden education enrichment program was developed by Levy Lakeside Principals Elizabeth Trencheny and Allison Banhazl, members of the PTA and Site-Based Team to expand learning beyond the classroom and provide unique opportunities for students to grow.

Community Forum The Merrick Union Free School District Board of Education will host a special community forum on Wednesday, October 26th to discuss the capital improvement bond referendum that will be presented to the community for vote in early December. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Cub’s Cave at Levy Lakeside Elementary School, located at 21 Babylon Road in Merrick. The proposed capital project bond referendum will address the need for major repairs and renovations at all schools, the addition of air conditioning in all classrooms and an extension for Chatterton School. If voters approve the proposed project, all three schools within the district

would see considerable building improvements, including bathroom renovations, repairs to building masonry, sidewalks and curbing, and additional parking. Air conditioning would be added to all classrooms and learning spaces throughout the district, providing for better temperature control and proper airflow. Furthermore, a 5,800 square foot addition would be built onto Chatterton School to provide for a second multipurpose room and intervention classrooms. Currently, certain academic intervention services are provided in a space that was never intended for student instruction. The total anticipated cost of the project is $24.9 million. Of this amount, $5 million will be used

from the district’s fund balance. The remaining $19.9 million would be funded through a bond. For a home in the district assessed at $688 (a market value in the low to mid $300Ks), the annual cost impact would be $76 per year. For a home assessed at $963 (a market value in the low to mid $600K’s) the average yearly increase would be $106. For a home assessed at $2,189 (a market value in the low $900K’s to $1 million), the annual cost impact would be approximately $241. The district invites all residents to attend the community forum on October 26th to learn about the proposed project. The bond vote will be held on Tuesday, December 6th, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Levy Lakeside Elementary School.

Inside Out Bellmore students enrolled at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center enjoyed a fun-filled performance by administrators and staff during the school’s annual pep rally, an on-stage performance to teach the district’s core values. This year, the script

loosely reflected the story of Riley, a character who must learn to control her feelings in the popular movie “Inside Out.” Reilly, like Reinhard students, had to incorporate the core values of integrity, trust, respect, teamwork and dedication into her life to become a Rising

Star Polisher. During the skit, each class individually performed a song based on one of the core values, while holding up handmade stars decorated with notations on how to become rising stars in their schools and community.

Learning Fire Safety The North Bellmore School District is doing its part to promote fire safety, welcoming local fire departments to its elementary schools throughout October, which is Fire Prevention Month. On October 5th and 6th, the North Bellmore Fire Department visited Saw Mill Road Elementary School with its smokehouse and a fire truck. Students entered the smokehouse, which

simulates a real home, where they heard from firefighters. The lessons included stop, drop and roll, the importance of smoke detectors, how to escape their home in a fire, and kitchen safety. At the end, the students crawled through a room filled with artificial smoke and were helped out of a window by members of the fire department. “I think it’s important for them to hear straight from the firefighters the

importance of fire safety,” said Principal Jeff Rosof. “I think the message sinks in when it comes from the men and women serving as firefighters in our community.” The fire safety program is held every year for students in kindergarten through third-grade, and fire department visits will continue at the other North Bellmore schools throughout October.

Reading Goal Winthrop Avenue students in Bellmore have set a goal to collectively read 600 books during the PTA-sponsored Pick A Reading Partner event, being held from October 5th through 28th. This year’s theme is “Exploring Reading Through Books,” and Principal Sally Curto has encouraged the

students in grades 3-4 to read an extra 15 minutes each evening. Curto noted that students are required to submit their book titles on the district’s new Chromebooks through a Google Classroom survey. “This eliminates the collection of paper and connects the district’s

Pride on Display The W.T. Clarke High School football stadium was a sea of maroon and school spirit as the Rams defeated Valley Stream South, 42-20, during Clarke’s homecoming on October 1st. After the first half of the game, the W.T. Clarke varsity cheerleaders, marching band and color guard gave a showstopping performance for the crowd. Following, members of the East Meadow School District Board of

Education, Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo and central administration led the annual halftime show of class floats onto the field. This year’s theme of adventure parks included “Lego Land,” “Six Flags,” “Hershey Park” and “Disney World.” Students threw candy into the stands as visitors cheered them on. At the rear of the parade, seniors Jesse Goodman and Jarielys Quijano waved to the audience as they were recognized as homecoming

king and queen. As for the game, Besnik Dalipi scored the Rams’ first points with a 45yard interception return and later added a 23-yard touchdown reception. Corey Rosenbloom had 17 carries for 176 yards with a touchdown, as well as Austin Lyons-Carman, who had 12 carries for 98 yards and a touchdown. This victory was head varsity coach John Boyle’s 150th win at the school.
