Harry “Have you ever really had a teacher? One who saw you as a raw but precious thing, a jewel that, with wisdom, could be polished to a proud shine?” ~ Mitch Albom Last week, I was saddened to learn of the passing of a most cherished teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Elsesser - “Harry” as he signed the yearly Christmas cards we exchanged. They say that some people leave footprints on your heart… this was most certainly true of the man who took me under his wing way back in 4th grade, and helped me to soar to new heights I never thought possible. Up to that point, I had been a fairly good student, conscientious enough in the academic department, but lacking a bit of the “plays well with others” skills that tend to come with time. Seeing this unfulfilled potential, Mr. Elsesser made it his mission to ensure that I would flourish under his watchful eye.

His class was one of those that you find yourself reflecting upon from time to time with a smile, recalling anecdotes and amusing instances, such as when he would entertain us with stories of his travels - to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Japan, and beyond. Occasionally, there would be touches of Swahili thrown into the vocabulary lesson for good measure. As I entered fifth grade a better all-around student and person, Mr. E. decided to retire after 30 years of teaching in the Lindenhurst school district. Saddened to see him go, and promising to keep in touch, my mother - who had also been a student in the district when Mr. Elsesser began his tenure there started a yearly correspondence, exchanging Christmas cards and keeping each other updated on the happenings in our respective lives. Years later, I took over this tradition and began sending my own correspondence, filling Mr.
E. in on the comings and goings of college and, eventually, my blossoming career. How proud he was to learn that I was utilizing my love of writing and had become a weekly columnist for my old hometown paper. Often, he would call my desk at the office, greeting me with, Is this Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, the reporter?? We would chat about how work was going, the family, had I seen any of my old classmates lately, what I had for lunch… and always, without fail, as we were getting ready to hang up, he would say, Send hugs and kisses to your parents, and of course to you too. What a wonderful man, and what a treasured friendship, one sustained for over a quarter of a century. How lucky I was that our paths crossed in life, and how blessed I am to have so many fond memories to reflect upon, and remember with a smile. May you rest in peace, Mr. E… Love and kisses, Jamie

East Meadow High School seniors Ariana Adames, Patrick Cruz and Callie Quinones have been named 2017 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars. The NHRP was established in 1983 through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and honors about 5,000 or 2.5 percent of the highest-scoring students from more than 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Qualifications for recognition are based on critical reading, mathematics and writing scores on the PSAT/ NMSQT and a minimum GPA of 3.5. Although there is no financial reward, recipients receive a certificate and the NHRP sends a list of all recognized students to subscribing colleges and universities. The district

Students in Helen Han’s Mandarin classes at Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District learned about the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. The Chinese MidAutumn Festival is the
second most important festival in China after the Chinese New Year. The day, also known as the Moon Festival, falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar when the moon is at its fullest. To celebrate, the Chinese people eat a reunion dinner

Moon Festival with their families, much like our Thanksgiving. Han’s classes read and acted out a traditional Autumn Festival poem and learned the words to a song about the holiday. The Youth Recognition Award is an annual honor bestowed by the Community Council on a high school student in the area that comprises the Levittown and Island Trees school districts and whose non-monetary contributions to a Council member organization is above and beyond the usual. Sharing Ideas “Who Moved My Basket?” was the theme of a recent hands-on activity at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District that focused on science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. The entire fourth grade gathered in the cafeteria on September 28th and split into teams of three or four students to participate
in an engineering challenge. Each group used a limited supply of gumdrops and toothpicks to design a structure that could support the weight of a textbook. The premise was that the students were the architects for a group of ants looking to carry away a picnic basket. They had to create a structure that could hold a heavy object.
Each student had to come up with a design on their own, then work with their teammates to come up with a group plan before they started building. If an idea didn’t work, they had to try again. Teachers say they plan to lead monthly grade-level STEAM activities, giving students an opportunity to work with many of their peers throughout the year.

Reading is a Superpower the total school minutes are posted in the lobby so that the school’s super readers can see their superheroes climb a rendition of the Empire State Building. Other activities during the month include a PARP program kickoff with the Petra Puppets, as well as a Book Fairies used book collection, a Drop Everything and Read activity, and the school’s book fair. PARP also coincides with the district’s October 19th Literacy Night. If the students reach the ultimate goal, Mrs. Curto will participate in the much-anticipated annual Principal’s Challenge later this month. “Our students so far have been doing a really great job of meeting their daily goals with their reading superpowers,” Mrs. Curto said. “They are truly reading superheroes.”

Winthrop Avenue students in the Bellmore School District are using their superpowers to meet their collective school goal of reading 9,000 minutes during the month of October as part of Pick a Reading Partner month. PARP is a New York State PTA Program, which encourages parents, staff and community to collaborate in the building of a reading partnership between home and school and to motivate students to love reading. Principal Sally Curto said the students are encouraged to engage in a reading activity for five days a week and for a minimum of 15 minutes per day. Reading can include a book, news article, following a recipe or playing a board game with written instructions. During the four-week program, each student’s minutes are recorded and

Fourth-graders at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District traveled back more than 2,000 years with the help of Journeys into American Indian Territory to learn about the civilization of American Indians. The in-school field trip immersed students in American Indian culture with a museum display of tools and clothing that helped communities
gather food, hunt, build shelters, and protect themselves from wild animals and extreme weather conditions. Students also walked through a wigwam, tried on tradition American Indian clothing, beat on drums and crushed corn to create grain. Guided by presenters Maddi Cheers and Richie Cornacchio, students established their own Iroquois government
among their classmates. They were divided into groups and asked to select one leader based on the qualities of kindness, equality and openmindedness to assist in leading their village. Additionally, fourthgraders re-enacted the lives of American Indian children by playing games, reading authentic stories, creating clay pots and dancing to traditional music.
Dancer Named Scholar-Artist Arielle Waters of the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD, who is studying dance at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), was recently named a Scholar-Artist by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday. She earned the honor for excellence as a practicing dancer and for superior academic achievement. For as long as she can remember, Arielle Waters has coupled a demanding academic schedule with rigorous dance training. A confident, thoughtful, technical and creative dancer, she believes that being the best version of herself is far more important than perfection. She says that, while at LIHSA, she has come to embody what it means to be an artist. Chapter President of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, Arielle has represented LIHSA at New York State Lobby Day and
the Nassau BOCES State of the Agency Address, and has volunteered her time to the Rosemary Kennedy Dance Collaborative. Next fall, she plans to attend college, where she’ll study pre-physical therapy, exercise science and kinesiology. Her goal is to eventually launch her own physical therapy practice, specializing in dance and sports injury rehabilitation. “My experience at LIHSA has been both life changing and eye opening,” Arielle said. “My time spent here has been extremely rewarding. I’ve discovered a great deal about myself and transformed into a true artist. I have learned much more than dance at LIHSA,” she said. “I have learned the importance of giving back and paying it forward.” Arielle credits her teachers for much of her growth. “All of my teachers at LIHSA have truly helped

me in so many ways,” she said. “They have taken the time to get to know me on a personal level and have prepared me well for any challenges the future may throw my way. Melanie Hock and Alyssa Marcolini of the East Meadow UFSD, both of whom are students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), were honored by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) and Newsday. They earned prestigious awards in the LIAA Scholar Artist competition for excellence as practicing performers and for superior academic achievement. Alyssa Marcolini, who was named a Scholar Artist, has become a better singer, actress and dancer during her time at LIHSA. Her teachers have both inspired and challenged her, helping her to improve her stamina as a performer while preparing her for higher education. She plans to attend college, where she will study Musical Theatre and eventually pursue a career on Broadway. “Musical theatre is something I love doing with all of my

A Love of Learning research project where she had the opportunity to take work in the National Synchrotron Light Source II facility, working on protein crystallization. Also strengthening her research skills, senior Hannah Grunfeld spent her summer months learning first-hand analysis skills at Hofstra University where she assisted in an individual research project with Dr. Aniruddha Deshpande. Grunfeld explored music trends and created a survey to discover if there are correlations between how one listens to music and tinnitus, the perception of sound when no actual external noise is present. In addition, Grunfeld spent two weeks in Australia as part of a teenage travel program, volunteering at the Australia Zoo, where she helped care for the animals. Seniors Yingyue “Maggie” Liu and Helen Zhang attended a six-week summer research program at Stony Brook University at the Garcia Center for
Polymers at Engineered Interfaces. The program gave them the opportunity to meet students from around the country and work on projects with partners. Liu explored protein and how it effects blood clotting, while Zhang took a deeper look at nanostructures. Instead of a summer research program, senior Jared Schwartz earned a six week internship at Stony Brook University where he worked in the environmental science field. Schwartz explored radio isotopes released from Fukushima, Japan and researched the impact they made on species of fish. “These students did a tremendous job,” said science research teacher Matthew Zausin. “They gave up a huge part of their summer to do something that was not a requirement and went above and beyond to do something that they were very passionate about.”
Residents who attend Wantagh School District’s monthly board of education meetings learn firsthand about high school happenings through reports delivered by student representatives. This year’s representatives, who were elected co-presidents of the
school’s GO (government organization), are Annie Browne, Katie Gifford and Olivia Zukowski. The girls will rotate each meeting to bring updated information about the high school’s academic successes, athletic competitions and other interesting and important events. In
addition, the students will relay information to the GO about district issues discussed during the board meetings. The administration and board of education congratulate the representatives on being elected to this important position.

In an effort to prepare students for a possible emergency, members of the Wantagh Fire Department visited Lee Road Elementary School on September 28th to review the importance of fire safety through discussion, videos and hands-on practice. Students in grades K-2 heard from Wantagh firefighter John Licata in the school’s gymnasium. the importance of smoke detectors. Students in grades 3-5 heard from Wantagh firefighter John Loeber, who spoke about what to do when a fire breaks out. He also discussed the use of smoke detectors and urged students to take them seriously. The classes watched a fire safety video that encouraged them to have a family escape plan in place in case of an emergency. The older students had the unique opportunity to practice an E.D.I.T.H. drill, which stands for Exit Drills In The Home. Classes were
invited outside the building where the Wantagh Fire Department brought a Smoke House for them to practice their emergency preparedness. With the supervision of the fire department, the students went into the Smoke House and learned what to do when smoke fills the air. They followed an escape plan which included getting low, moving towards a window, sitting on a windowsill, calling out for help and exiting to safety with the assistance of a fireman.

Six MacArthur High School science research students continued their education during the summer of 2017 by volunteering their time to intern and participate in research programs to build their knowledge in the science fields. During the summer months, 10th-grader Isabella Molina attended a four-week STEM Prep Summer Institute program with Brookhaven National Laboratory. She participated in a number of projects, including building a remotely operated vehicle. Topics were covered in physics, biology, chemistry, scientific computing and environmental science and Molina had the opportunity to meet students from both Nassau and Suffolk County. Senior Delilah Spinelli also took part in a program at Brookhaven National Laboratory called the High School Research Program. The competitive six-week program allowed Spinelli to tackle an independent

A Different Beat In addition to a wellrounded curriculum, Bellmore School District students participate in an outstanding music curriculum. Not only are Winthrop Avenue School students involved in orchestra and band, many third- and fourth-graders also attend recorder club, under the advisement of new music teacher Maria
Pisciotta. Ms. Pisciotta explained that every third-grade student learns the recorder, but each has the choice to continue his or her studies of this instrument. Students begin the program at the “soprano” level with the goal of improving their skills and learning enough songs to become an “alto”
level player. The effort to progress to the next level is called recorder karate, where students earn belts for each song learned. “The goal of the club is not only to prepare for concerts,” Ms. Pisciotta noted. “It also serves as enrichment for students spending extra time learning a new instrument.”

Going Gold for a Cause
Students and staff throughout the North Bellmore School District’s five elementary schools donned various shades of yellow for Go Gold Day on September 29th, an annual effort to raise awareness of childhood cancer. At John G. Dinkelmeyer Elementary School, children signed gold paper ribbons, which were then hung up on a bulletin board outside the main office. The PTA used yellow cups to create two ribbons and two hearts in the fence adjacent to the bus loop. Principal Faith Skelos noted that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness
Month and that holds significance at the school because past and current Dinkelmeyer students have overcome the disease. “We want our students to know that people face different challenges,” she said. “Go Gold Day is about creating a sense of community and sending positive energy toward people who are facing those challenges.” Park Avenue Elementary School raised more than $1,000 for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This year’s theme for Go Gold Day was “Whip Pediatric Cancer.” Students lined the hallway that morning to dance to “Whip Nae Nae” and they all
received pencils that read “Park Whips Childhood Cancer.” “We want to show support for everybody battling this dreadful disease,” said Principal Eileen Speidel, who added that past, current and incoming Park Avenue students have fought cancer. Families could make a donation and purchase a paper heart in honor of someone who has battled cancer. The hearts, which were outlined in gold and had an image of gold ribbon in the middle, were hung on the bulletin board in the main lobby to prominently display the messages of support from the Park Avenue community.
