Chris Amato-Smith is helping Long Island women find the strength to fight Breast Cancer, one haircut at a time. Amato-Smith, owner of Top Cuts hair salon in Bethpage, NY, is paying it forward after battling and beating Breast Cancer. Her salon’s annual fundraiser, Cut-A-Thon for Breast Cancer, provides funding for Long Island women who are currently battling Breast Cancer, providing a reprieve from some of their every day responsibilities so they can focus on getting well. To date, Amato-Smith’s hair salon has raised $150,000.00 for the cause, and they are far from done! “While I was going through treatment, a Breast Cancer coalition helped me with their Lend a Helping Hand program. They help women with every day tasks such as meal preparation, house cleaning, transportation and wigs, just to name a few. Taking some of those every day burdens away means these women can concentrate on getting well.” Now in its 10th year, Amato-Smith’s Cut-A-Thon designates one day a year where 100% of all proceeds received for the day’s beauty services go towards assisting women on Long Island who are currently battling Breast Cancer. This year’s Cut-A-Thon will feature over 125 baskets filled with various prizes, including: gift cards, crafts, pots, games, a trip to Antigua, a Joe Namath autographed and framed jersey, an electric fireplace, a camera, autographed first edition Disney series artwork, and more. The baskets are on display now for raffle ticket purchases. Contributors do not have to be present on the day of the event to win. In addition to the salon’s standard beauty services, the staff will also be on hand to do pink hair extensions for Breast Cancer awareness. All are welcome to come to the event to get hair services, buy raffle tickets, make a

Enjoy the “Doing.” Release the Result. “Let your joy be in your journey, not in some distant goal.” - Tim Cook One evening, about a year ago, I was sitting at the dinner table with my nine year old son, when he said, “Hey Mom, let’s play truth or dare!” Wanting to steer clear of any mishaps during dinner, I opted for “truth,” to which he gave me the long face and said, “Oh, c’mon mom, pick dare.” Reluctantly I said, “Okay, dare.” Knowing boys, I hoped it would be something fairly tame. My son pondered his options and with a mischievous grin, he said, “I dare you to make the nicest picture you’ve ever made in your life, and then rip it up!” In his nine year old mind, asking me to create something and then rip it to pieces was an ultimate triple dog dare. We’ve all seen how young kids react if they are building a tall tower with blocks and something or someone comes along and knocks it over. Forget about it! It’s DEFCON 1. I asked my son for a piece of white construction paper and
crayons. As we continued with dinner, I put crayons to paper, honing in on the most beautiful garden scene I could think up. I then colored my way to paradise. I meticulously drew the green grass and flowers; the blue sky and sun; the cascading birds flying by; I even did my best to draw a little country cottage. The picture was beautiful upon its completion. I held it up to show my son. “Well? What do you think? You like?” He was impressed and said, “Yeah mom, that’s actually a really nice picture. I love it.” I looked at the finished product, once again, to savor my hard work. Then, as requested, I tore it in half. No sooner did I do that, my son, dribbling food out of his mouth, screamed, “What’d you do that for?! Why’d you tear it up?!” He was horrified at the calm and swift nature of my action. I looked at him and said, “What do you mean? You dared me to make the nicest picture I’ve ever made and then tear it up. What’s the problem?” He couldn’t understand why or how I was able to do that so calmly. I looked at
it as a teachable moment (I live for those, in case you haven’t noticed). I explained that the joy was in the experience of creating the picture. The end result was merely icing on the cake; immaterial. If you live that way, no one can hurt you; no one can touch you. Alternatively, if you are married to a particular result, you’re vulnerable to disappointments and sadness when things don’t turn out exactly the way you want them to. You’re on a roller coaster ride dictated by your everchanging surroundings, as well as other people’s opinions. If you find your joy and fulfillment within, in the doing, outside results or conditions, unpredictable as they may be, will have less power to affect your state of well being. I said to my son, “I enjoyed thinking up the scenery for the picture. I delighted in choosing the colors I would use to create it and watching the picture come to life. I loved the experience of creating the picture. The end result was wonderful, but I don’t need it.”

The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. Since their founding in 1995, they have reached almost 350,000 high school and college students, parents, coworkers and neighbors with lifesaving information on breast health; expanded their reach internationally, training their first breast health educator from outside the United States; annually educated over 200,000 people across the world on their website; and trained breast health educators in local nursing programs, exponentially increasing their impact on Long Island. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, here are a few ways you can get involved with this organziation! Looking to increase your awareness about breast cancer this month? You can do so by visiting www.MaurerFoundation.org and viewing their list of Statistics. Don’t become a statistic: Reduce your chances of being diagnosed by educating yourself on the risk factors of breast cancer and taking action on the factors that you have control of, like smoking and obesity. Later stage detection and advanced tumor size does decrease your odds of surviving breast cancer. You can improve your odds of survival by practicing early detection. Do a monthly breast selfexam, a yearly clinical breast exam and after 40, a yearly mammogram. Looking to support a breast cancer organization this month? The Maurer Foundation is holding their
Celebrating L.I.’s Apple Harvest The aroma of freshly cooked apples and cinnamon wafted through Wantagh’s Forest Lake Elementary School as kindergarten students cooked applesauce, made from fresh apples. Using a Foley mill, each student took turns churning the wedge to separate the skin from the meat of the
apple, and then tasted their delicious culinary creation. During the week, the students also participated in various apple activities. They taste-tested red, green and yellow apples to determine their favorites, graphing their answers on the Smartboard. They also studied the star-like inside of an apple and created
construction paper apples, using their fingertips to paint seeds. The kindergartners also sorted apples by their attributes and described the fruit using their senses. There was also a literary component to the lesson in that various apple-themed books were read each day to celebrate Apple Week.
Cocktails for a Cause event, which will take place on October 23rd at Havana Central Restaurant in Garden City from 6-8PM. Attendees will enjoy an evening of appetizers, drink specials, raffles and more as this organization raises funds and awareness for their mission! Paula Abdul: Inside the Heart of a Pop Music Legend By Allison Kugel
On October 3rd, Paula Abdul hit the road on her North American tour; a tour that’s been more than twentyfive years in the making, since her 1992 Under My Spell tour which grossed $60 million in ticket sales (a mint by 1992 standards), yet also yielded some tragedy that almost sidelined the beloved performer forever. The world knows Paula as the plucky, iconic dancer and pop star turned American Idol judge, turned legacy performer. What people may not know is that this Grammy-winning legend had to climb a mountain of adversity, both physical and emotional, to dance again... Allison Kugel: You’ve said that when it comes to your choreography, you would often dream the dance steps up in your mind, and then run to the bathroom mirror and go through the steps that you’d already envisioned. Do you feel that when it comes to your choreography, it’s being channeled through you, like it’s coming from some higher source?
Allison Kugel: Is there anything else you feel you are still here to accomplish or experience, that has yet to be done? Paula Abdul: I really want to do some more producing, both in television
attention now, as I’ve gotten older, to those signs the universe gives me.
Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about your tour, Straight Up Paula!. Are you going to make each song’s choreography and costumes reminiscent of the original music videos, or will you change it up to reflect present day?
Paula Abdul: I definitely do. I feel that’s one of my biggest contributions. That’s what people herald me as doing, and it’s nice to know that. It’s nice to know that you can create and spark those kinds of dance crazes, but also that they can stand the test of time. A lot of dancers will say, “You’re American Music Awards dance opening numbers are ‘almanac.’” (Laughs) And artists that will say, “Man, I watched and learned everything that you ever did.” It’s wonderful to hear that.
Paula Abdul: It will be a little of both. I know that fans come to hear those songs, and they will, but I’m not doing a direct replication of those [music] videos. There is a nod to them, with a little bit of nostalgia. But for me, this is an opportunity to create my own vision of what I want to do in terms of interpreting the songs. I’m incorporating lots of technology and multimedia, and with some storytelling as well. I’m also going to cover some fun things, and some not so fun things, from my life in this show. It’s giving people a little bit more insight into who I am, and the career I’ve had. Allison Kugel: I ask this question of everyone, because I learn so much about people through this question… when you pray, who or what do you pray to? Paula Abdul: I believe in God, and I do pray to God. But I am also spiritual in the sense that I know I have angels around me, and I know to pay attention to the signs I get from the universe. I used to not pay attention to the signs that were right in front of me. I feel that I finally get it. I do pay
Allison Kugel: Do you see yourself as a pioneer with putting dance at the forefront of the pop music industry?
Allison Kugel: You came into the business as a dancer, and as a choreographer, and then you ventured into recording music. At that time, although you were extremely commercially successful, you had your share of critics. A lot of other artists at the time said, “She’s really a dancer, just trying to be a singer. She’s off-key, she should stick to choreography…” How did you handle that kind of criticism back then, and how do you handle it now? Paula Abdul: I feel like being in this business for over thirty years, you learn how to handle constructive criticism, and just plain old, simple criticism. What I have learned is that, although I can’t just say what the formula is for success, because success is different for everyone, I do know that a recipe for failure is trying to please everyone. You never will. For me, I’m an entertainer that happened to resonate with millions of people. I’m grateful for that. I’ve never claimed to be the best at anything. I’m a constant, perpetual student, and I love learning. I love improving upon weaknesses and nurturing the strengths; and being able to draw upon inspiration from others. Allison Kugel: Why do you think you resonated the way you did with my generation; those of us who were coming of age in the late eighties and into the early to mid-nineties? Paula Abdul: I think the throughline of most of my success is my heart, and I think that it connects with other people’s hearts, especially women. I have this profound love affair with women. I’ve never been a threat to women. I have been very inclusive, and always thought the
most beautiful thing you can do is to recognize beauty in someone else and celebrate that. Because I was always an accessible type of artist, people felt that they knew me, and they do know me. Allison Kugel: Do you have a tenyear dream, as in, “in ten years I’d like to be retired, living on the beach.”? Do you have a plan like that, or is this the dream, to keep singing and dancing for as long as you can? Paula Abdul: I feel extremely grateful that I’m able to do this. I was sidelined for many, many years because the last time I was on tour I was in a terrible accident in a sevenseater jet. One of the engines blew up and the right wing caught on fire, and we plummeted. Allison Kugel: I don’t think many people out there are aware that you went through this ordeal. Were you belted in when the plane began to plummet? Paula Abdul: I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt. I was getting ready to put my seatbelt on, but I never made it and I hit my head on the [ceiling] of the plane. It caused me to have paralysis on my right side, and I endured fifteen cervical spinal surgeries. I went through all of that, mostly, privately. Back then, we didn’t have tabloids like we do now. We didn’t have the extent of paparazzi or the [internet], so you were able to contain some information. I was so afraid of being counted out and looked at as damaged goods. The problem was that, at the time, I was. I ended up having to take almost seven years off to have all these different neuro-surgeons operating on me. So, the fact that at this stage of my life, I’m able to do this, is the biggest
gift ever! I am living, in many ways, my dream. But I also would love to branch out into other areas. And I get as much joy behind the scenes as I do from being out in front. Allison Kugel: What do you hope audiences will experience when they come out to see you on the Straight Up Paula! tour? Paula Abdul: I hope during the show they feel a celebration of fond memories of their time growing up with me. I also hope people get a chance to know me further, and get a better sense of who I am, with my whimsical ways and my sense of humor. A Focus on Character Traits
Fifth-graders throughout Northside Elementary School in the Levittown Public Schools reflected on their summer reading book, Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, by Chris Grabenstein on September 26th. Guided by teacher Josephine Richiusa, the students explored the different characters in the book and linked them with specific character traits.
Working in small groups around the classroom, the students collaborated to describe each character on their worksheet and find the right character trait. Students were provided with a list of character traits to help them narrow down their choices. After picking a trait for each character in the book, the class went over their answers one by one as Richiusa helped students with properly
defining the words. This lesson is one of many that students throughout the Levittown Public Schools are incorporating into their English curriculum as a way to highlight the students’ summer reading books. Teachers are using the books to review important concepts and reading comprehension skills.

Bethpage Student Composer Bethpage High School senior Nicholas Timoshenko has been chosen to perform in the New York State School Music Association’s AllState Electronic Music Composition Showcase at the annual winter conference this November.
Nicholas’s musical composition was one of eight chosen by judges from a large pool of submissions from across New York. In addition to his performance on Nov. 30, he has been asked to give a brief discussion about his composition to
the audience. Principal Nicholas Jantz and the entire school district congratulate Nicholas on this selection and wish him luck in November.
Bethpage Students #ChooseKind Central Boulevard Elementary School, in the Bethpage Union Free School District, carried an old tradition into a new school year when it held its first Thoughtful Thursday of 2018-2019, on September 27th. This month’s lesson focused on ways to “choose kind.” Teachers led their
classes in discussions about the ways to be kind to each other and the community. The book We’re All Wonders, by R.J. Palacio was the focus of discussion in Kristen Ghisone’s kindergarten class. Meanwhile, Barbara Cataldi, and her fourthgrade class, worked in groups to create banners
on five ways to be kind as a class. They then decorated individual balloons on how to be kind as a person. The entire school came together to wear Thoughtful Thursday shirts with #ChooseKind on the back to spread the theme of the month.

Mepham Pride For Homecoming To culminate spirit week at Wellington C. Mepham High School, the Pirate community hosted a festival, pep rally and homecoming game on September 28th. Various clubs set up booths in the parking lot that included face painting, bubble creation and slime making. Teams were called onto the field during the pep rally to display their school
spirit and the BellmoreMerrick community came together as the football team took on Valley Stream Central in the evening. Parent volunteers worked yummy concession stands and the school’s band kept the crowd moving and grooving to today’s hits. At halftime the cheerleading and kickline squads got the crowd on their feet. Anthony Novello
and Samantha Bello were crowned homecoming king and queen, respectively. The Pirates defeated Valley Stream Central, 2813. “It was a hard-fought game between two good teams,” said Coach and Athletic Director Anthony Cracco. “The effort by our players was outstanding.”

Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities (ACLD) and New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) Commissioner, RuthAnne Visnauskas, have announced the groundbreaking of Oyster Bay Gardens, LLC. in Bethpage, NY, on the campus of ACLD. A special ceremony and press conference was held to kick-off the ground breaking of the new community which will include 36 affordable apartments for low and moderate income households, which includes people ages 62 or older with incomes up to 50 and 60 percent of the area median income; plus 12 apartments for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, ages 21 or older, with incomes up to 50 percent of the area median income.
The location of Oyster Bay Gardens, LLC is 807 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage, NY. The ceremony was led by ACLD Executive Director Robert C. Goldsmith, HCR Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas, Long Island Regional Director of the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) Jacquelyn Best, and Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. HCR Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas said, “Oyster Bay Gardens will provide 48 households with the opportunity to get the affordable housing they need to take part in our growing economy, and live independently in the community they love. Thanks to the State’s $20 billion, five-year housing plan, we are investing in projects like this across the State, and right here in Bethpage, where they play an important role in
keeping the Long Island economy moving forward.” Oyster Bay Gardens, LLC is conveniently located near local bus lines, the Long Island Railroad, retail shops, dining and restaurants, convenience stores, and government offices. The total development cost of Oyster Bay Gardens, LLC is $18.9 million. New York State’s investment includes $9.5 million through HCR’s Housing Finance Agency’s tax-exempt bonds, its New Construction Program loan of $5 million, $2.2 million through its Supportive Housing Opportunity Program, an allocation of Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits, and $2.25 million in capital construction loans provided by OPWDD, which will also provide rental subsidy assistance for the 12 supportive units.

In recognition of National POW/MIA Recognition Day on September 20th, Wantagh Middle School students took a personal moment of silence to remember the 104 New York soldiers missing in action or who were prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. In the United States, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday in September and honors all prisoners of war and those missing in action, as well as their families. A Wall of Remembrance for the missing soldiers is
currently displayed in the middle school library. For the past couple of weeks, student voluntarily placed a soldier’s name on the wall and took a moment to reflect on the soldier and his family. They are also encouraged to do more research on the soldier to find out why he was MIA or a prisoner of war. Each participant received a bookmark with the soldier’s name on it. In addition, library assistant Mary DeGregorio displayed the Vietnam War POW bracelet she wore while in seventh grade, as well as literature about the
historical event. “The goal of the Wall of Remembrance is to raise awareness about the Vietnam War,” DeGregorio said. “It’s an opportunity for the students to show their appreciation for the soldiers sacrifices and to let the world know they are not forgotten.” Student Katherine Wehr said she was personally touched by the project. “We don’t normally think about these people and the things that happened to them during the war, and it’s really sad.”
Middle School 101For 6th Graders Sixth-grade students throughout the Levittown Public Schools are embracing their new role as middle schoolers with the help of Jonas E. Salk Middle School and Wisdom Lane Middle School’s seven-week classroom push-in program, Middle School 101. Facilitated each year by school counselors, the program helps sixth-graders adjust to the new building, while giving them the proper resources and information about how to succeed in middle school. The 2018-2019 program began towards the end of September as school counselors visited sixthgrade classes to discuss their role in the building, the guidance services offered and what Middle School 101 is all about.
Students were encouraged to get involved and learned about different clubs and volunteer organizations offered at the middle school level. School counselors also stressed the importance of taking on new experiences. “You don’t have to be the best,” said Wisdom Lane school counselor Christine Elder. “But it’s fun to be involved and if you enjoy doing it, you should 100 percent go out there and try it.” In addition, students learned the importance of breaking out of their comfort zone through an ice-breaker activity. School counselors challenged students to walk around the room and interact with their peers while filling out a sheet about their different interests and lives.
After the activity, the students labeled who they would go to in the school building for a variety of situations. The school counselor went over the list with the class and also provided a list of the people in the building that students could always reach out to during the year. The students will continue with the Middle School 101 program during the year to make the new students feel comfortable with the middle school transition. Each week, the students will tackle new important topics such as study skills and stress management, that will help them grow into better middle school students.
Levittown Triumphs Over Bellmore bands, cheerleaders, representatives of student organizations, district administrators and the Homecoming court. Senior football players, cheerleaders and members of the kickline, marching band and color guard were introduced during pregame ceremonies, with each player escorted across the field by a parent. The 2018 Homecoming king and queen were Joseph Gagnon and Jennifer Gattus, who were presented their robes and crowns from last year’s king and queen,
Kevin Tahone and Molly Huggard. Todd Winch, the assistant superintendent for instruction, spoke about each of this year’s inductees into the Levittown Hall of Fame from MacArthur and Levittown Memorial high schools. The halftime show included performances from the varsity cheerleaders and MacEttes kickline team, as well as the heavy-metal themed performance by the marching band and color guard.

Fun-Filled Fruit Challenge Northside Elementary School second-graders in Ryan Shaw’s class honored Johnny Appleseed’s birthday on Sept. 26 with a special Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics activity. Students learned about Johnny Appleseed and his travels on canoe before they were challenged to build their own floating raft out of apple pieces and toothpicks. The students
worked as a team to brainstorm their ideas, build their apple raft and then test their creations with Ms. Shaw. The activity allowed the students to learn how to collaborate and learn from failure. After testing their raft, many students had to redesign their creations to be successful in the water. Ms. Shaw photographed each raft in the water which she later displayed on the SmartBoard to talk
about each group’s design process, looking at what worked and did not work. The class completed an apple raft worksheet during the activity where they wrote down their materials, drew their blueprint, described what worked well, what was challenging and how they improved their design to successfully float. At the end of the lesson, Ms. Shaw provided apples for the students to eat.
