The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual e v e n t (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. You can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), and Bake Team Members (to donate baked
goods to sell at some of the events). Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! The Babylon Lions Club is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has been serving their community for over 80 years! They are holding their 25th Annual Beer, Wine, Food and Dessert Expo on Thursday, November 7th at The Piermont from 7:30PM-10:30PM. Three exceptionally talented teens attending Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) have been selected by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) for prestigious awards in the 2019-2020 ScholarArtist competition. These gifted young artists will be profiled in Newsdayand were honored at the LIAA’s annual gala. Dance student Isabella Aletrakis of the Bellmore
Merrick CHSD was named Scholar-Artist. Media student Max Cohen of the Syosset CSD and Theatre student Katelyn Harold of the Bethpage UFSD both earned Awards of Merit. They are all recognized by the LIAA as “the best of the best” on Long Island, artistically and academically. “We are all extremely proud of these students and their impressive achievements,” said Dr. Chris Rogutsky

There is a new resident at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in the Bellmore School District. For the past couple of weeks, the Reinhard Rising Stars have observed the development of a chrysalis (pupa), which is hanging from the leaves of one of the plants in the school’s new butterfly garden. On Sept. 26, students had noted that the chrysalis had changed color and the newly formed butterfly’s wings were about to show through. “We are teaching students to be scientists
and this has been an excellent way for all of the students to utilize their observation skills,” Principal Patricia Castine said. “They can simply go to their courtyard to learn firsthand about the stages of the butterfly.” The impetus for the garden resulted from Ms. Castine’s attendance at an environmental workshop in which educators were taught how to create a science learning environment in their own school yard. With PTA funding and donations from a local nursery, the butterfly garden was
created during the 20182019 school year with brightly colored flowers and a butterfly bush. The prekindergarten students released Painted Lady butterflies during the spring after learning about the life cycle of butterflies. Ms. Castine remarked that this chrysalis is the first evidence that butterflies are using the garden to form. Reinhard’s butterfly garden does need maintenance. In October, the school’s garden club will be cleaning up the garden and getting it ready for the coming spring.

Going Gold For A Cause Yellow was a popular color throughout the North Bellmore School District on Sept. 27, which marked Going Gold Day to raise awareness for pediatric cancer. Superintendent Marie Testa said that this day has become an annual tradition in September, which is designated as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. She explained that the district wanted to show its support for local families that have been affected by illness. Students and staff wore different combinations of gold, yellow and neon green to support the cause. “It’s great when the community can come
together and show unity for a worthwhile cause,” said Saw Mill Road Elementary School Principal Jeff Rosof. Carsyn Volpe, a fifth grader at Saw Mill, was diagnosed with cancer when he was 2, and underwent treatment for about a year-and-a-half. He said he is very appreciative of the fact that the district raises awareness for childhood cancer every year. “I feel sad that some people who fought it didn’t make it,” Carsyn said, “but I feel happy at the same time that people are supporting cause.” Martin Avenue Elementary School fifth grader Robert LaSpina
is still fighting his battle with leukemia and remains upbeat. The support from his friends and the entire school community gives him an optimistic outlook. “It makes me feel like I don’t have to be scared of anything,” Robert said, “because I know people are always going to be there supporting me.” Throughout North Bellmore, teachers and staff members wore gold shoelaces and donated $5 each through the Lace Up For Kids campaign spearheaded by Solving Kids Cancer. Money raised throughout the district was donated to the organization to support research for cancer treatment.

To recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Northwell Health will hold a free education event about breast reconstruction surgery options from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22 at Northwell Health’s Corporate Conference Center at 2000 Marcus Avenue in New Hyde Park. Northwell’s highly experienced plastic surgeons will discuss advanced breast reconstruction techniques and talk about various considerations that go into making choices about breast reconstruction. Participants will meet with women who have undergone breast reconstruction, share their stories and also see their results. Northwell’s plastic surgeons are at the forefront of innovation, performing 3D microsurgery, robotic mastectomy and reconstruction and lymphatic reconstructions
The aroma of freshly cooked apples and cinnamon wafted through Forest Lake Elementary School classrooms as kindergarten students assisted their teachers with making homemade apple sauce. Using a Foley mill, each student took turns churning the wedge to separate the skin from the meat of the apple and then
tasted the fruit of their labor. Teacher Lynne Adams said the students have been studying apples for a week, having sorted and graphed apples by their attributes. The kindergartners have also tasted different apples and graphed their favorites and have discussed the parts of the apple. One additional science

All About Apples activity included an experiment on density. In Stacey Sandurs’ class, each student placed their apple in a tub of water to see if it would sink or float. The students then recorded their observations and checked to see if they matched earlier predictions.

Top Music Recognitions For Wantagh Students William is a member of the school’s marching band, band, jazz band and wind ensemble and also plays the trumpet. He also performs with NassauSuffolk Performing Arts located in East Meadow. William is a member of the Tri-M Honor Society, formerly known as the Modern Music Masters. Catherine, also a Tri-M Honor Society member, is a Julliard Pre-College student. She plays violin with the school’s orchestra and tambourine with the chorus.
Katriana is a soprano who sings with the chorus and vocal jazz performance group and plays the violin in the school’s orchestra. In addition to playing several roles in the school’s musical performances, Katriana participates in local and regional theater troupes. She is also on the Tri-M Honor Society board. The district congratulates the students on this outstanding accomplishment and extends best wishes for success at the winter conference.
