During the in-school field trip, students were immersed into American Indian culture with a museum highlighting tools, clothing and ways of survival. Supervisor Kate Murray today honored 17 police officers for their outstanding service during the Town of Hempstead’s 2015 Police Service Awards ceremony at the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion at Hempstead Town Hall. Police officers from the villages of Freeport, Garden City, Hempstead, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre and from the Nassau County Police Department were recognized for their respective acts of heroism in the line of duty. “While we live, work and raise our families here in the Town of Hempstead, our dedicated police officers are patrolling the streets to ensure that our quality of life is protected,” stated Murray. “I am proud to present these 17 police officers with the town’s Police Service Award in recognition of their heroic and selfless acts.”

Police Service Awards

It was a day of unity as Mandalay Elementary School students in the Wantagh School District dressed in orange and took a stand against bullying. This year, the PTA’s Health, Safety and Awareness Committee coordinated an activity that instructed students to write statements against acts of bullying and about being united as a school on orange strips

of construction paper. The strips were then stapled to make chains and were displayed around the cafeteria and gym doors as a reminder that the school is united against bullying. In conjunction with the event, students attended the Sticks and Stones assembly with performer Lyle Cogen, who defined bullying as “meanness out of check.” She explained that being mean one time

is a human mistake, and meanness a second time is merely obnoxious. “Three strikes and you’re out,” Cogen told the students in an emotionally packed performance about being bullied. Cogen also explained that the goal of the program was to encourage students to have a plan to make a change if they find they are being rude and mean to others.

Blank Page By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The bane of every writer’s existence. That infinite white space stretching before you, silently mocking its would-be-author’s lack of inspiration. And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the

oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not

simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

Alternative Anniversary Ten years ago this fall, the Meadowbrook Alternative Program opened its doors to 27 students. “Failure was never an option - for them or for us,” said MAP Principal Susan Ellinghaus. “From the start, we’ve believed that MAP was a privilege, a safe place and a program where students could test the waters and figure out how academic success

feels.” Today the staff at MAP still holds to those original ideals and they still celebrate every success. They’ve also grown, offering Advanced Placement classes, a Key Club and continuing with community service initiatives. MAP students succeed through their engagement in a rigorous academic

program consisting of personalized classroom, real world and service learning experience delivered in the context of a nurturing and challenging learning community. “MAP is a learning community - we may take an alternative path, but we get to the same finish,” Ellinghaus added.

Far from the average breast cancer foundation, Pink Aid’s mission is to help local underserved women survive treatment on both a financial and emotional level. Its goals are made possible through fundraisers such as its forthcoming Second Annual Pink Chair Luncheon and Fashion Show, which pays special attention to “local breast cancer warriors.” This unique event, which last year raised more than $225,000 from its 300 attendees in support of several local community grants, is being held at Mitchells|Marshs in Huntington on Thursday, October 15th at 11:30 a.m. The heart and soul of the Pink Chair fundraiser is the “Celebration of Life/ Warrior Fashion Show” featuring 17 brave Long Island women who have battled through treatment of the disease. Bringing in the Season Cooler temperatures and shorter days precipitated an array of fall activities for prekindergarten students at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in the Bellmore School District. During the prekindergarten program’s first month of operation, students in Liz Haines’ and Alison Burke’s classes first learned about apples. Using a graph, the students placed their favorite red, yellow or green apple on a graph to determine the most popular. After cutting open an apple and studying the seeds and star inside,

the students made colorful apple prints that now decorate the classrooms. In addition, the students made footprint apple trees, using their footprint as the trunk, a green-colored loofah print as the tree and thumbprints as red apples. “One of our goals in the prekindergarten program is to build the students sensory skills through their activities,” Ms. Burke explained. An additional activity involved the students’ finding fluffy, orange cotton balls (pumpkins) inside a bowl of dirt (black beans). Using a

clothespin, the students were instructed to pick up the pumpkins and to place them in a miniature jacko’-lantern. The activity was designed to improve the students’ sensory and fine motor skills. One final activity involved the creation of leaf paintings. After the teachers placed a leaf template taped on paper to an easel, the students were instructed to sponge paint the exterior with bright fall colors. The final product showed the outline of a leaf.

Student Spotlight THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI: SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS BY: JORDAN CIANCIULLI, SENIOR, ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL

As a high school senior, there is no issue more relevant to me than picking a college. Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.

I can see myself at The U. This is why I tried really hard to make myself stand out as an applicant. Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions, was happy to answer my questions about applying, and calm my anxiety. He informed us that, even though my grades and standardized test scores are pretty competitive, the holistic admissions process puts an emphasis on the applicant as a whole. With any luck, I’ll be able to put this advice to good use. After touring many competitive schools and narrowing my options, the University of Miami kept floating to the top of the

pile. I plan on touring the University of Miami again this weekend, just to further my desired transition into a Miami Hurricane. I’ve picked my institution of higher education, and now I can only hope that they pick me. I’m excited about the possibility of spending the next two years alongside my brother at one of the best colleges in the country, and I’m really looking forward to spending the next four years at my dream school. My past has shaped me in to the person I am today, but the University of Miami will make me the man I hope to become in the future.

Senior Recognized W. T. Clarke High School senior Daniel Ong has been named a Commended Student in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship program. Approximately 34,000 students were recognized for their outstanding

academic performance across the country. Daniel placed among the top five percent of 1.5 million students who entered the competition by completing the 2014 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/

NMSQT). The district congratulates Daniel on his academic achievement and wishes him much success during his senior year at W. T. Clarke High School.

Traveling Back in Time Fourth graders of Parkway Elementary School traveled back 2,000 years into American Indian territory, learning about tradition, culture and survival. During the in-school

field trip, students were immersed into American Indian culture with a museum highlighting tools, clothing and ways of survival. Students learned how American Indians gathered food, hunted,

As a kickoff celebration for Parents As Reading Partners, Winthrop Elementary School students in the Bellmore School District celebrated reading and its rewards during an assembly, which featured Steve Petra and the Petra Puppets. During this interactive show, Reading Rampage, students met puppets The Brain, Gus the Word Bird and Pierre Lobsterre who honed into the power of

words. “Sometimes reading can be work, but it takes work to get things done and to progress,” Petra told the students. Puppeteer Steve Petra trained at the National Theatre of Puppet Arts and at Jim Hanson Productions in Manhattan. His shows combine educational content with puppetry, illusions, props, sound effects, music and humor to keep students engaged.

During Reading Rampage, students explored onomatopoeia, figures of speech, parts of a book, punctuation and more. Principal Sally Curto explained that the show tied into the PARP theme of “Formula for Success”. She also encouraged the students to read for an additional 15 minutes during the annual PARP celebration.

ColtFest Rescheduled Students, parents, alumni and community members turned out for the rescheduled Calhoun High School Homecoming game Saturday. Stormy weather cancelled ColtFest, the school’s annual festival held in conjunction with the homecoming game on Friday, but the game was rescheduled for October 3rd.

“We would have loved to play the game under the lights but the weather did not cooperate,” Calhoun Principal Nicole Hollings said. Student Rachel Leiner belted out the National Anthem and the varsity cheerleading squad and mascot, Charlie the Colt, were also on hand to display school spirit. Fellow athletes donned

their Colts gear, face paint and more as they cheered on the football team. The Colts lost to New Hyde Park 17-7 and are now 1-3 so far this season. ColtFest has been rescheduled for October 31st at noon. Originally founded in Westport, Connecticut in 2010, Pink Aid funds breast cancer support services that provide transportation to treatment, child care and food cards, among

This grant-based organization is the brainchild of Amy Katz, Amy Gross, Renee Mandis and Andrew Mitchell, whose family owns Mitchells of Westport in Connecticut and Mitchells|Marshs in Huntington, New York. Pink Aid Long Island was launched last year in recognition of the same need for free mammograms and compassionate care services for women battling breast cancer in our own local communities. “Andrew started this foundation with a group of women after hearing stories of women struggling to cover basic needs while trying to battle the disease,” explains Allison Mitchell, President of Pink Aid, Long Island. “My husband, Chris,

who owns Mitchells|Marshs, has a special place in his heart for this particular cause as his mother and grandmother have both been affected by the disease.
