Almost all of the participants inquired about future pickleball playing opportunities at Wantagh Park and at Sportime. It was a huge success. We were thrilled to partner with Nassau County to host such a great event.” Renovated and New Courts in County Parks Wantagh Five tennis courts resurfaced and striped to create 10 new pickleball courts. County Investment: $560,000 No fees are required to use County pickleball, tennis or basketball courts. Players currently can bring their own portable pickleball nets to play and will be able to pick up nets at each park’s administration building in the near future. Pickleball can be played on courts specifically built for the sport or by “striping” tennis courts, adding new lines to existing courts and setting up portable nets. Nassau County has 6,000 acres of parks, providing green space, basketball courts, baseball fields, ice skating rinks, golf, swimming, summer camps and much more. The county’s parks attract more than a million visitors in a typical year. Pickleball has been growing rapidly, as tennis courts are modified and pickleball courts are built, providing a fast-paced sport on 20-foot by 44foot courts. The number of pickleball players in the United States grew from 3.1 million in 2018 to about $4.2 million by 2020, according to pickleballportal.com.

One in seven young adults have a substance use disorder. One in four young adults thought about suicide during the pandemic. Identifying young people in need and addressing gaps in available support is more important than ever. YES Community Counseling Center has received funding from the Department of Health and Human Services to implement B.R.I.D.G.E.S. to Treatment and Recovery Program – “Building Resources for Individuals to Develop, Guide, Encourage, and Support” Program. YES was one of eighteen recipients nationwide and the sole grant recipient on Long Island (one of three recipients across NYS). This initiative will enhance and expand comprehensive treatment, early intervention, and recovery

support services for young adults across Nassau County. YES developed a model which is unprecedented on Long Island that is expected to have profound outcomes for transitional aged youth at risk for or struggling with a substance use disorder. Senator Kevin Thomas stated, “As we continue to confront the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, increased support for mental and substance use treatment can save lives. The B.R.I.D.G.E.S. initiative will expand crucial treatment and recovery services for young adults and their families across Nassau County. I am incredibly grateful to YES Community Counseling Center, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, and all of our community partners for their ongoing commitment to providing essential services for every

resident in need.” With committed partners, YES will work with public and private schools, colleges, and other organizations to provide critical wrap around services to young adults in an effort to improve their trajectory and reach their full potential. Nassau residents will be able to volley, rally and lob balls on refurbished tennis – and new pickleball courts – in County parks. With residents flocking to the fast-growing game of pickleball, County Executive Laura Curran announced 21 new courts are now ready for play in Nickerson Beach Park, North Woodmere Park and Wantagh Park. The added amenity is part of the County’s recent $1 million investment to refurbish a total of 17 crumbling, cracked tennis courts, many now also striped for pickleball, as well as four basketball courts – completed over the summer. The announcement comes following an inaugural free adult pickleball clinic and mixed doubles tournament hosted by Sportime in Wantagh Park in partnership with the County. “Pickleball is on the upswing and I am happy to meet the demand for our many residents flocking to this fast-growing sport,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “County parks are gems in our communities and provide countless health and recreational opportunities for residents. Restoration is a living history museum owned and operated by Nassau County that provides guests the opportunity to step back in time to the island’s agrarian past. The Village consists of homes, barns and other buildings dating back to 1765. Costumed interpreters describe life as it was in the 19th century and historic trade smiths demonstrate various trades. Also on the grounds of Old Bethpage Village Restoration is a Co-Op Farm and farmers market, which brings organic and local food to Long Islanders and the Museum of American Armor which is home to armored vehicles dedicated to remembering our servicemen and women who have fought bravely for our country. Old Bethpage Village Restoration is also the About Old Bethpage home of the Long Island Village Restoration Old Bethpage Village Fair.

The Levittown community came out in full force to celebrate General Douglas MacArthur High School’s homecoming on Sept. 25. The festivities began with a pep rally the day before to build excitement for the upcoming game and activities. The parade kicked off at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School as local organizations joined with the school community. The youth football team, youth cheerleaders, school clubs and athletic teams paraded down the street to the high school led by central office administrators, Board of

Education members and the marching band. Back at the football field, the district individually recognized all the senior members, along with their parent or guest, of the football and cheerleading teams, marching band and kickline. The homecoming court was announced and each nominee was introduced. Jack Butler and Kylie Zanelli were crowded homecoming king and queen. The MacArthur varsity football squad took to the field to square up against the Herricks Highlanders. The Generals scored the

first touchdown in the first quarter and went on to score two more touchdowns before the halftime show. Halftime included performances from the cheerleaders from the varsity, junior varsity and middle school team, as well as kickline. The marching band treated the crowd to an excerpt from its new 2021 routine. The Generals continued to dominate the game with one more touchdown in the third quarter. Herricks was able to get some points on the board in the last quarter but MacArthur took the win with a final score of 28-7.

Levittown Seniors Earn Spot In National Recognition Programs National African American Recognition Program. The students were recognized for their academic achievements and outstanding performances on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Each year, these College Board programs celebrate thousands of Hispanic, Latinx, Black and African American students who take the PSAT/NMSQT

during their junior year of high school. Although this is not a scholarship award, earning a spot in one of the programs is considered a great academic honor which can help students get accepted into colleges and be considered for prestigious scholarships. www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island. Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. This non-profit is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

Music Courses

Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers

behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

Curran Announces New Mental Health Service for Veterans Curran Also Announces Veteran Picnic to Engage Younger Vets In ongoing support of Suicide Prevention Month, and as military and Veterans suicides continue to rise at an alarming rate (25% in 2020), County Executive Curran was joined with local Veterans and the Veterans Services Agency (VSA) to announce a new support system for Nassau’s Veterans. Nassau’s VSA will soon be equipped with inhouse social workers, specializing in assisting veterans with crisis counseling, substance abuse and other mental health related issues. The County aims to have the services available six days a week (Monday through Saturday) at no cost to local veterans. “Our Veterans Service Agency does a fantastic job supporting the brave men and women who have served our country and the acquisition of specialized crisis counselors will only expand on what they offer to our Veterans. So many people were affected by

mental health issues the past year, and our Veterans are no exception. We are proud to soon be able to offer the specialized help that they need to get them through tough times,” said County Executive Curran. “Veterans experience unique behavioral and mental health issues and often need unique support to conquer them. With the new crisis counselor service, we will be able to provide the help our Vets need. County Executive Curran has once again fought to do the right thing for Nassau’s Vets and we thank her for her ongoing support,” said Ralph Esposito, Director of Nassau County Veterans Service Agency. The service will be free for all Veterans but will target Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans, who are 2.5x more likely to die by suicide. The crisis counselors will be licensed social workers specializing in veterans / military

distress and will offer in person crisis intervention services, care coordination support and linkage to peer support services. These crisis counselors will be trained to support veterans combatting mental illnesses, suicidal thoughts, substance use disorder and emotional distress. The program is being developed by the Mental Health Association of Nassau County and will be supported by American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding. Curran also announced a Veterans picnic, open to Veterans and their families, on October 23 from 11am to 2pm at Eisenhower Park. The event will have free food and entertainment as well as an array of support services available to Veterans in Nassau County. County Executive Curran also reminded the public of existing VSA programs, such as the Vet2Vet program. Vet2Vet
