o celebrate September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Wantagh Elementary School student council hosted a schoolwide Hat Day to raise money for the Jimmy Fund Clinic at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Students not only wore their funkiest hats, but were encouraged to donate a dollar for a great cause. In total, the student council collected $1,049 in donations for the Massachusettsbased clinic.

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County culminated a 7-month volunteer program at The Farm at Oyster Bay with the 7th annual Harvest Celebration. During the celebration, Girl Scout Gardeners (levels Daisy to Cadette) and Under Gardeners (levels Seniors and Ambassadors) helped harvest potatoes, eggplant, peppers, squash and collected the seeds
for next year’s planting. The girls also celebrated the fall season by making scarecrows and jack-olanterns. Throughout the program the Girl Scouts learned the importance of giving back as all food grown and collected at The Farm of Oyster Bay is donated to local food pantries across Long Island. The Under Gardeners, were honored at the
celebration with their community service bars for leading younger Girl Scouts at The Farm. Each girl gave at least 20 hours of community service to helping maintain The Farm, but many girls strive to exceed that number. In return, the Girl Scouts thanked Amanda Roberts, the Garden Manager of the harvest program for her work with the girls.

Beginning January 1st, 2017 in New York State, the sale of smokedetecting devices powered by removable, replaceable batteries will be prohibited. Instead, retailers will be able to sell only smokedetecting devices with a power source that isn’t removable and lasts at least a decade. Increased availability of extendedlife batteries and new tamper-resistant smoke detectors is expected to help individuals and families better protect themselves and their loved ones. Existing devices already in homes will be allowed to remain there until they stop functioning, and smoke

detectors with replaceable batteries will continue to be on sale in the state throughout 2016. New York State law requires that all homes and businesses must have working smoke detectors. Smoke detectors with a 10-year lifespan are already on the market; most are powered by lithium batteries, not a traditional 9-volt. FASNY, along with the approximately 110,000 volunteer firefighters in New York State and safety advocates nationwide are joining forces during Fire Prevention Week, to remind residents to take the following precautions: Smoke alarms: replace every 10 years. · A smoke alarm’s age can be determined by looking on the back or side of the smoke alarm, where the date of manufacture can be found. · Smoke alarms should
be replaced 10 years from that date (not the date of purchase or installation). Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old - or sooner if they don’t respond properly. Batteries: test monthly, replace yearly · Smoke alarms should be tested monthly, and batteries should be replaced when they begin to chirp, signaling that they’re running low. Two-thirds of fire deaths occur in homes with no, or non-functioning, smoke alarms · Have at least one smoke alarm on every floor, including the basement and in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area. · Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is clanging the alarm with the message, “Don’t wait – check the date!” - the 2016 theme of the annual Fire Prevention Week, October 9th-15th - promoting the importance of replacing smoke alarms every 10 years. “Functioning smoke alarms reduce by half the risk of dying in a home fire, so it is extremely important to make sure they’re working properly”, said FASNY President Kenneth Pienkowski. President Pienkowski noted that families utilizing a 10-year-life smoke alarm in the home can remove a potentially high-danger component of human error from the reliability of alarms. Statistics show that three out of five U.S. home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms

Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often
do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times
before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

Lighthouse Will Not Light The Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum Committee announced today that due to financial constraints the Lighthouse Tower and Keepers dwelling will not be lit this year during the holiday season. This of course does not mean the mariners beacon atop the Lighthouse tower which has warned sailors since 1797. Dick White, Chair of the Committee, stated, “When we took over the Lighthouse in 1986, we committed ourselves to the care and maintenance of the now 220 year-old Long Island icon. We have significant ongoing and future costs ahead of us in repair and maintenance of not only the Lighthouse Tower and Museum, but the revetment holding up the bluff on which our beautiful beacon stands.

four decades.” Through the VITA program, volunteers are trained and then assigned to work at town senior centers and local libraries, providing income tax preparation assistance to town seniors and residents with limited incomes. Volunteers are not required to hold any advanced degrees or certifications, but must have a willingness to work with people, have a keen sense of mathematics, and be available for at least 3 daytime hours per week during the 10-week program (February, March and part of April 2017). IRS-trained instructors will train volunteers at the Department of Senior Enrichment, located at 200 North Franklin Street in Hempstead during a multiday training program
beginning on December 5th, 2016. Saturday training sessions will be conducted on January 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th, 2017 at the Oceanside Public Library located at 30 Davison Avenue in Oceanside. “This program has enjoyed great success over the past 41 years. I encourage individuals with past experience in tax return preparation who can dedicate at least three hours per week during the upcoming tax season to consider joining this outstanding group of volunteers,” concluded Santino. East Meadow’s Barnum Woods Elementary School was recognized by Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School in the Island Park School District for its donation of more than $18,000 in the wake of Superstorm Sandy with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 23rd. The ceremony acknowledged the new playground that the generous donation had helped to build. The devastating 2012 storm flooded Francis X. Hegarty Elementary
School with four feet of water, causing severe damage to the building and playground and forcing students and teachers to relocate to another building for the remainder of the academic year. After witnessing the destruction, the East Meadow students held multiple fundraisers aimed at raising $5,000 to help the Island Park students and teachers return to their classrooms. With the support of the East Meadow community, family, friends
and faculty, Barnum Woods exceeded its fundraising goal by $13,200. “By helping those in need, we enrich ourselves,” said Barnum Woods Principal Gregory Bottari. “I am blown away by the generosity, kindness, collaboration, perseverance and citizenship that the Barnum Woods community exhibited in assisting teachers, students and families of Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School to return to their classrooms.”

STEAM Education Science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics were the focus of a physical education unit at East Broadway Elementary School in Levittown. The weeklong centers included cup stacking, building structures with tiles, dominoes challenges, and creating creatures with
K’Nex. As each student rotated through the stations, they improved eye and hand coordination, honed cooperation and communication skills, participated in teamwork and fostered creativity. Physical education teachers Diane Chapman, Pat Nolan and Jamie San Filippo explained that
there is a direct correlation between the skills used in the STEAM/Physical education unit and those utilized during most team exercises. Chapman added, “The STEAM activity is also inclusive for all students that possess different learning levels.”

Santino today honored 15 police officers for their outstanding service during the Town of Hempstead’s 2016 Police Service Awards ceremony at the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion at Hempstead Town Hall. Hats On for Cancer To celebrate September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Wantagh Elementary School student council hosted a schoolwide Hat Day to raise money for
the Jimmy Fund Clinic at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Students not only wore their funkiest hats on September 30th, but were encouraged

Apple Fun With the apple harvest in full swing, Bellmore teachers at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center have been incorporating this fall fruit into their English language arts and mathematics lessons. Upon completing a unit about apples, prekindergarten students participated in an apple taste test and were then asked to graph their favorite
apples. The district’s youngest students also gave their observations on their tasty snack using the words “least” and “most.” Using tongs to increase their fine motor skills, the sudents went apple picking in bowls filled with apples and water. They also made ABAB patterns on construction paper strips with sliced apples. S e c o n d - g r a d e classrooms rotated
through five math, English language arts and art centers during an apple festival. Using a scales, the students compared the weight of their apples against other fruits and vegetables and participated in a graphing activity. They also made apple prints, read a brochure on “Johnny Appleseed” and designed apple frames.

The C-SPAN Campaign Bus, on Long Island to cover the recent presidential debate held at Hofstra University, is promoting educational outreach by visiting broadcast communication students in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District. Through interactive exhibits, students learned about the public affairs
network’s in-depth coverage of government and politics. They engaged with C-SPAN representatives and experienced interactive technology, including touch-screen quizzes, became familiarized with high definition camera and production equipment and navigated the Campaign 2016 App. The experience was
through a Cablevision partnership, through Charity for Champions. “Our broadcast communication students are learning as much as they can production related in the field of media,” said Vice Principal Marie Netto. “This is just one example where we are giving our students real world experiences.”

Alumni football members joined current players in the locker room for a pep talk ahead of the big game. “This is the only sport where you can’t just do it alone,” said Paul Auersperg, a 1982 graduate. Emily Herrera and Ron Lampert were crowned
homecoming king and queen following a vibrant performance by the kickline team. The varsity cheer squad kept school spirit going along the sidelines throughout the game. Superintendent of Schools John DeTommaso, Assistant Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction David Seinfeld and Legislator Steve Rhoads were also on hand to see the Cougar win. “A little wet weather can’t dampen Cougar spirit,” said DeTommaso.
The North Bellmore School District marked Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month by “going gold” on the last day of September. Students and staff in the five elementary schools wore yellow and gold to raise awareness of childhood cancer. At Park Avenue Elementary School, gold balloons were tied to the pillars in front of the school. Over at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School, students from
the SADD Club placed yellow cups in the fence along Waltoffer Avenue in the shape of hearts and ribbons. Dinkelmeyer Principal Faith Skelos said that the month has particular significance at the school because a current fourthgrader fought a battle with cancer for several years, beginning when he was in kindergarten. She was touched that so many students found ways to incorporate yellow or
gold into their wardrobes that day. “It brings people together for a common awareness,” she said. Skelos added that even though it was Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, children should also remember the adults in their lives and throughout the community affected by the disease. In October, teachers and staff will participate in the Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk at Jones Beach.

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently teamed up with Sports Fishing Education Center to apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) lessons under the sea. Girl Scouts in grades four through eight worked alongside experts of the Sports Fishing Education Center to “dive” into natural aquatic habitats at Cedar Beach Marina and study marine life on Long Island.
The Girl Scouts of Nassau County used nets to catch and observe sea creatures, taking the tiniest organisms - such as plankton - and viewing them under the microscope. The girls also dissected a shark, having the chance to examine the shark’s anatomy, learn the name and location of each organ and how they work together throughout the course of the shark’s life. The STEM program is growing in popularity
