t was a day of local pride as the community gathered for Wantagh High School’s annual homecoming festivities. An afternoon pep rally, during which the fall sports teams were introduced, set the tone for a weekend of Warrior spirit. Prior to the game, class floats were led down Wantagh Avenue to the football field by the marching band, cheerleaders, former Little League President, Grand Marshall Ed Ciminelli and Board of Education members.

The Wantagh School District celebrated a momentous occasion as the Board of Education, administrators, local representatives and members of the district’s Declining Enrollment Committee attended the full-day kindergarten ribbon-cutting ceremony at Wantagh Elementary School. Board of Education President Michael Soethout thanked the community for its commitment to this muchneeded and beneficial educational program. “We didn’t just add four hours to the day,” Mr.
Soethout said. “This year’s kindergarten students are getting a whole new educational experience.” On September 3rd, the district opened its doors to its first full-day kindergarten program, which includes four classes at Wantagh Elementary School, three classes at Forest Lake Elementary School and two classes at Mandalay Elementary School. “These 189 young children now enjoy a richer, fuller, more educationally sound program,” said Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg in her

opening comments. “These extended hours permit us to raise the caliber of instruction to provide not only additional academic lessons, but also additional opportunities for social and emotional development.” Guests were treated to a couple of musical performances. The kindergarten students, accompanied by their teachers, also sang “Good Morning” and presented the Board of Education with a banner stamped with their handprints, thanking them for their full-day program. New York State
Assemblyman David G. McDonough, a member of the New York State Education Committee, called the opening of full-day kindergarten in Wantagh a “new beginning” and a goal for the entire state. Nassau County Legislator David Denenberg also claimed that children in Wantagh “always come first.” After the yellow ribbon was cut, guests were invited for refreshments and a tour of the kindergarten classrooms. Mandalay Elementary School Principal Dr. Lynne D’Agostino summarized the district’s and community’s feelings about the program in her comments, stating, “Our students have finally been given a gift of sorts, which will enhance their learning and prepare them and future generations of Wantagh students for the rigor and competition ahead.”

Taking A Bite Out Of Reading The third- and fourthgrade students at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School kicked off October with the official start of the Parents as Reading Partners celebration. This year’s theme, Feed Your Mind: Take A Bite Out Of Reading, began with a visit from children’s book author Kathleen Bart. Ms. Bart presented her book “The Global Gourmet” to the students, explained the writing, editing and publishing process, and
shared stories from her travels around the world. PARP features three weeks of activities, both in school and at home, designed to encourage parents or other family members to become active reading partners with their child or family member. Other events scheduled for the Winthrop students include a book fair and inclass mystery readers. The school will also host a used book drive and donate the books raised to the Book Fairies, a nonprofit group
that distributes books to school districts and shelters in need on Long Island. Imbedded in PARP is the school’s annual Health and Safety Week, during which the students will receive a visit from Nassau County Police Officer Sharon Galvin to discuss Internet safety and cyberbullying, learn techniques on stress reduction and enjoy a healthy cooking lesson from Dr. Robert Dell’Amore.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic
delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even
the slightest bit. No, the vast majority of Long Islanders would rather speed up to the bumper of the car in front of them than let another vehicle merge in between. And so we wait, vainly attempting to pick a safe spot to sneak in. And so a 25-minute commute turns into 45 for no justifiable reason. Two lanes closed, an endless line of orange barricades… but no workers, no work underway, nothing. Just chaos and confusion and road rage of the most uniquely New York variety. Good thing we have those trustworthy overhead signs to guide the way.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Gary Hudes made a special presentation to David Chavez, an Island Trees third grader who saved his grandfather’s life last month. A ceremony was held at David’s School, Michael F. Stokes Elementary School, where the Supervisor and Councilman presented the young hero with a proclamation declaring David Chavez Day in Levittown. “The risks if low blood sugar is left untreated are significant,” noted Murray. “By knowing enough to call 911 to get immediate help for his grandfather, David saved his life.” David learned to dial 911 while in kindergarten. He was able to explain to the 911 operator what

Choosing The Right College
No matter how you slice it, picking a college is the culmination of your high school career. As a senior, the pressure associated with selecting where I will spend the next four years of my life is truly right around the corner. I’m almost done with all of my tests, essays and applications, but even if I receive that acceptance letter in the mail, how do I know where I truly want to attend? After acceptances, denials and waitlists, a student is still left with the daunting task of finding out which college truly fits him or her. There are many factors that play into choosing
where you would be the most happy. Are you an athlete? A study freak? A party animal? Countless variables can have an impact on both your social and psychological well being. Before you enroll in that Ivy League school, take a look around, because you may feel the urge to select a school that actually wants you. For instance, if a school of lesser prestige is offering you a scholarship, you might feel the urge to go there instead of a top tier college. Before you enroll anywhere, make it a point to visit! If you can, check out the prospective

college because, for all you know, you could hate it. If visiting is not an option, at least talk with a current student or alumni. No one can give you more insight than someone who is already in that situation. Attend a College Night! On October 2nd, St. John’s hosted its annual College Fair, with nearly 200 present. Showing up to one of these not only gives you a broader glance at many universities, but the up-close and personal time with an Admissions officer can be priceless. Feel it out, because this decision is undoubtably the most important one you will make thus far.

Hundreds of walkers, many of whom are affected by retinal disease, are expected at the free VisionWalk, which also includes children’s activities, a bounce house, refreshments, entertainment, and more. Dogs and strollers are welcome on the 3.1 mile walk course. Since the VisionWalk program started in 2006, tens of thousands have participated in events across the country to raise more than $28 million for blindness research.

Hundreds touched by vision loss will rally to fight blindness at the Long Island 5K VisionWalk on Saturday, October 12th at Jones Beach State Park. This year, dozens of teams are striving to raise $140,000 to support promising gene therapy, stem cell, and pharmaceutical-based research that could save and even restore sight. Blinding retinal degenerative diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration and Usher syndrome affect more than 10 million Americans, but the Foundation Fighting Blindness is funding cutting-edge studies toward preventions, treatments and cures. “Since the inception of our VisionWalk 7 years ago, the Foundation Fighting Blindness has funded retinal disease research that has brought once elusive treatments and cures out of the laboratory and into human clinical trials, restoring sight,” said Karen Montagnese, Long Island VisionWalk CoChair. “These are inherited diseases, so the work we do now will have a sight-saving effect on generations to come,” she added. Also participating in this year’s VisionWalk are 9 yearold Gianna Motto and her 11 year-old sister, Nicolette, of Islip Terrace. At three months old, Gianna was diagnosed with nystagmus and achromatopsia, a retinal degenerative disease that leads to progressive vision loss. Gianna is still able to see close up, but she has no peripheral vision and cannot see facial expressions. In an effort to support VisionWalk, the sisters created their own fundraiser, selling handmade earrings and sporting their own slogan: Fight for Gianna’s Sight. “As regular sisters, they argue and fight. Yet, when it comes time for martial arts class and fundraising, they put all the sibling rivalry aside and become a team,” said their mother, Monique Motto. Nicolette and Gianna participate in weekly adaptive martial arts classes, with the help of Third Eye Insight, an organization

Merit Semifinalists
East Meadow High School seniors Nathan Siegelaub and Dharsan Chandrakumar have been named two of 16,000 semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. Nathan and Dharsan represent the top onethird of approximately 50,000 high scorers who took the PSAT/NMSQT. Students are ranked with a selection index score based on their combined
scores in math, critical reading and writing. Semifinalists can compete to be named finalists and continue on to receive the prestigious National Merit Scholarship, as well as college and corporatesponsored scholarships. In order to become finalists, Nathan and Dharsan must fulfill a number of requirements, including maintaining their academic records throughout the school
year. In addition, they must receive recommendations from their high school principal and achieve SAT scores commensurate with their PSAT performances. Nathan and Dharsan will be notified in February of their standing. The district congratulates both seniors on being named semifinalists and wishes them continued academic success as they advance to the finals.

It was a day of local pride as the community gathered for Wantagh High School’s annual homecoming festivities. A Friday afternoon pep rally, during which the fall sports teams were introduced, set the tone for a weekend of Warrior spirit. Prior to the game, class floats were led down Wantagh Avenue to the football field by the marching band, cheerleaders, former Little League President and Grand Marshall Ed Ciminelli, and members of Wantagh’s Board of Education and administration. The theme
for this year’s parade was “Cities,” and each of the classes decorated brightly colored floats to celebrate New York (seniors), Las Vegas (juniors), Hollywood (sophomores) and Seattle (freshmen). The Warriors lived up to their name as they battled it out on the field against the Elmont Spartans. Michael Ferraro scored the team’s two touchdowns and led the Warriors to a 14-7 victory. During the halftime festivities, the cheerleaders and dance team motivated an already upbeat crowd. The high school band, under the direction of
Mindy Dragovich and Zach deVries, flawlessly performed the theme from Rocky, “Gonna Fly Now” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.” After the performances, presenters Arianna Caradonna and Avery Kratzer announced the junior class as winners of the float competition. The highlight of the festivities, however, was the coronation of Andrew Bloniarz and Stefanie Wenz as homecoming king and queen, with Nick English and Paige Craig as first runners-up and Louis Doria and Alyssa Kelly as second runners-up.

Fall Wildlife Festival The Fall Wildlife Festival will take place at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, located within the West End of Jones Beach State Park, on Saturday, October 19th and Sunday, October 20th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s festival theme is: Water: Every Drop Counts. The day will include a variety of water-themed children’s activities and displays from the Amateur Observer’s Society, Friends of the Hempstead Plains, Long Island Sierra Club, the U.S. Coast Guard, The Nature and Science Center of Long Island, Project Hope and the Science Museum

As she applies to colleges, she is focusing her attention on theater programs. “I always want acting to be a part of my life,” Lisa says, “in whatever way that happens to be.” The Scholar-Artist is as devoted to her academics as she is to her craft and is pleased that the award reflects that. “I appreciate the performance aspect,”
she says, “but I’m equally honored by the ‘scholar’ part of it. My grades are really important to me.” Gianna Raimi’s love of dance can be traced back to her childhood, when she first started dancing in The Nutcracker. She has performed it every year since, even in the coveted role of the Sugar Plumb Fairy. This might explain Gianna’s
preference for ballet. Or it might be her competitive nature. “I like the discipline of ballet,” she says. “You have to strive for perfection.” While she hopes to join a professional ballet company one day, she has explored a number of other forms of dance. “Dance has exposed me to the amazing talent in the world,” she says.

And while she adores the stage, Taylor says she is interested in every aspect of theater, from writing to crew work. “I love the theater,” she professes. “It allows me to be myself. I can’t see myself anywhere else,” she says. “It’s where I’m meant to be.” The young actress is grateful for the intensive instruction she gets from LIHSA. “It’s such a blessing to be here,” she says of the school. “It’s an amazing opportunity.” Emilia Bunich has been dancing since the fourth grade, and through the years has discovered a love and aptitude for a wide variety of dance including ballet, modern and jazz. Her time at LIHSA has helped her to not only hone her talents, but to widen her palette even further, with master classes in challenging styles like hip-hop and African tribal dance. “As long as I’m dancing, I’ll be happy,” says Emilia, whose future aspirations range from performing with a professional dance
