Arts Alive

The annual Arts Alive LI “Arts Month,” sponsored by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) and Bethpage Federal Credit Union is a month-long celebration of cultural events that take place across Long Island. Running through October 31st, 40
remarkable venues will host over 100 events, including a special Hispanic Heritage Month Exhibition running through October 26th at Bloomingdale’s Furniture Gallery at the Roosevelt Field Mall. Sponsored by the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the
LIAA, 12 Hispanic Long Island resident artists, will each have their artwork on display, many pieces for sale, throughout the gallery. An artists’ reception to kick-off the exhibition recently took place at the Bloomingdale’s Furniture Gallery.
School is hard, And sometimes it leaves you scarred. There’s always so much pressure, And the wounds just get fresher.
On pictures you want more likes, But what happened to fun and bikes? But we do these things to escape from stress And for a little escape from the mess.
Books and tests To a kid are just pests. Papers and projects Are as boring as the subjects.
But what does tomorrow bring? Another day being played by a string. You go back to work And remember everyone’s a jerk.
We all question why we go, But we really don’t know. We go because we have to, And sometimes we have to do what we have to do.
You go back to school, Where everyone thinks they’re so cool. And you’re lost in the building With teens who act like children.
The key is to find moments to live for, To not live life like it’s a chore. Make a friend, Find somewhere you blend.
If I could stress this more, Maybe you wouldn’t feel so sore. Find a friend, They could help you mend.
Life is harder on your own, Especially when you’ve yet to be grown. But we blame the teachers And the coaches who put us on the bleachers.
Friends distract you, Make things seem not so blue. You’d have someone to confide in, To pick up your chin.
We tend to think of the world as really small And every choice we make is a close call. It’s always who we know, not who we knew, And you feel like you’ve run out of glue.
When you stand together as an army, Everywhere you go is a party. Being with the people you love Makes everything okay, kind of.

Movement Speaks STUDIO OF DANCE
Movement Speaks Studio of Dance recently opened its doors in Babylon Village, at 225 Deer Park Avenue. After having danced for 27 years and taught for nearly 15 of those years, partners Aileen Smisek and Megan Connell decided to take the leap and open a dance studio of their own. Movement Speaks offers classes for children from ages 18 months through adult levels. These include: Mommy & Me, Pre-School, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary/Modern, along with a competition team training class. They also feature an award-winning competitive team, open to all serious dancers. Aileen and Megan’s choreography has been honored through the years with numerous prestigious awards at dance
competitions, both on the Regional and National level. Many of their students have gone on to dance in college and beyond. Aileen and Megan plan to involve the studio in upcoming community events such as the Babylon Fall Festival and the Old-Fashioned Night of Shopping. Also in the works for the coming year are a Zumbathon, a Mommy & Daughter Tea Party and, during the holiday season, a “12 Days Of Christmas” event where parents can drop their children off at the studio for a dance class and a special project while they shop locally in the Village. Movement Speaks looks forward to being an active member of the Babylon Chamber of Commerce, as well as the local community. The studio also hopes to fundraise for several causes close to their hearts. Best of luck in the neighborhood!

Farewell To A Legend By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I first became a Yankees fan back in the fall of 1995, as the team made its first run at the postseason since 1981, with the legendary Don Mattingly at its helm. For the first time in my lifetime, I understood the magnitude of this storied organization. And then, just like that, the run was over. Mattingly walked off into the sunset, having never made it to a World Series. The end of an era. But there, waiting in the wings, was a rookie shortstop, destined to pick up the torch and run with it. And run he did, for the next 20 seasons, leading the Yankees to five World Championships
and racking up countless milestones along the way. Derek Jeter exemplified what it meant to be a true Yankee in an era when there were very few, if any, athletes doing things the “right” way, never mind in a city as unforgiving as New York. Much has been said, and written, over these last several weeks – really, throughout the past year, since Jeter announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2014 season – analyzing the legacy of the player, the upbringing of the man, his place in Yankees, and baseball, lore. To that, I can only add the following: while he may never have been the “best” in any one statistical category, as
relentlessly pointed out by rival fans and the national media, he was undeniably in a class by himself in the only categories that counted – dignity, sportsmanship, integrity… and, oh yeah, he had quite the knack for coming through in the clutch, when the stakes were the highest, the pressure the greatest. Not bad for an “overrated” player, right? Yankees fan or not, these last several weeks have been quite the emotional rollercoaster. An historic era in Yankees history has come to a close, the only one my generation has had the privilege to witness. And what a privilege it was.

Pride Reigns Bright blue skies and warm temperatures fueled the Levittown community’s spirit and pride during General MacArthur High School’s annual homecoming game and parade on September 27th. The weekend event commenced with an afternoon pep rally in the school’s auditorium to announce the school’s athletic teams. Prior to Saturday’s game, students, clubs and the homecoming court gathered on the front lawn of Gardiners Avenue Elementary School to prepare for the parade. Grand Marshall Montana
Brook, administrators and Board of Education trustees led the procession of class and club banners, marching bands and homecoming court members down Old Jerusalem Road and onto the football field. Prior to kickoff, the senior football players, marching band, color guard, cheerleaders, Macettes and their parent escorts were introduced and honored for years of service to the school community. The members of the homecoming court were also introduced and King Gregory Baumstein and Queen Mary Malinowski
Promoting Dignity were crowned. Members of the homecoming court included Paul An, Michael Brown, James Daly, Brianne Giuliano, Jacqueline Mass, Kelsey McCarthy, Michael Papach and Alexandra Vanderka. A stellar performance by the marching band, under the direction of Joseph Romano, entertained the community during halftime. There were also performances by the award-winning cheerleaders, color guard and dance team. The highlight of the day, however, was the 21-20 victory over Syosset.
Every September, students at Bellmore’s Shore Road School participate in a school-wide assembly program focused on promoting responsible citizens. Led by Principal Patrice Matthews and school social worker Christine Davison, the fifth and sixth-graders were given an age-appropriate
overview of the Dignity for All Students Act, reviewed the school code of conduct, watched videos on bullying and cyber bullying, learned about the student incident reporting form and reviewed behavior expectations while also reinforcing the five district wide core values – respect, dedication, integrity, trust and teamwork.
Following the kickoff assembly, the students returned to their classrooms, where the lessons of the day were reinforced through a variety of activities and they received a copy of the code of conduct. Parents and guardians were provided with a copy of the code of conduct during back-to-school night.

Comedy For A Cause to benefit PULSE of New York, a Wantagh-based patient safety and advocacy organization. Country Fair Makes History Colonial era Rock Hall Museum lends an historic flavor to a modern day celebration during the Annual Country Fair on Saturday and Sunday, October 25th and 26th. Supervisor Kate Murray invites visitors to enjoy a festive weekend of funfilled activities, including a harvest market, live concerts, scarecrow making, pumpkin patch, food court, pony rides, animal farm and a craft area for children. “In addition to all the excitement of a traditional country fair, a visit to Rock Hall Museum provides a wonderful opportunity to relive the sights and sounds of Colonial era Hempstead Town,” commented Supervisor Murray. “Along with the many country fair events,
I invite you to tour the museum and experience an authentic 18th Century home and life-style.” With FREE admission and FREE parking, the fair runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 25th and Sunday, October 26th. The museum is located at 199 Broadway in Lawrence. A busy weekend of Colonial era activities includes fascinating recreations of 18th Century cooking, games, music and craft making. There will also be regularly scheduled tours of the museum. Featured entertainers at this year’s Country Fair include, Colonial Magician “Levram the Great” and country music group “Bob Stump and the Blue Mountain Band.” The fair is also highlighted by a variety of children’s
activities including a colonial craft workshop (fee), a pumpkin patch, pony rides, scarecrow making (fee), games and contests. The Country Fair is one of many popular events scheduled for Rock Hall in the months ahead. Around The World Students at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School kicked off its annual Parents As Reading Partners program (PARP) with a special assembly to motivate all students to read. The PTA-sponsored PARP program encourages students read for a minimum of 15 minutes a day throughout the duration of the program
with either a parent or other adult at home. On October 1st, the third and fourth-graders welcomed author and illustrator Chris Soentpiet to discuss the process an author goes through when creating a story. During his visit, Soentpiet spoke to the students about his experiences as a published author and illustrator,
including his use of models and photography to bring his illustrations to life. PARP features four weeks of activities centered on the theme “Reading Around the World,” both in school and at home, designed to encourage parents or other family members to become active reading partners with their child or family member.

Apple Attributes With the approach of the fall season, first-grade students at Forest Lake and Wantagh elementary schools have been studying the properties of apples and utilizing math, English language arts and science skills in their examination of this versatile and popular fruit. At Forest Lake, Lori Gottlieb’s class studied the apple’s attributes and participated in a sorting activity, separating their apples according to color and then counting the number of apples within each category. Supplemental activities included the writing of descriptive and vocabulary words and the
identification of apple colors. Ellen Hoffner’s class used their senses to identify the attributes of an apple, listing descriptions on the SmartBoard and in a writing activity. An accompanying activity included the reading of books on the legendary Johnny Appleseed and the making of puppets. Students in Marisa Lebel’s class were asked to determine if they preferred their apples in a pie, applesauce or juice and then to place a colored paper apple on a corresponding graph. The math activity taught the students about graphing, and revealed that more
classmates preferred apple pie. At Wantagh Elementary School, Joanna Baker’s students taste tested a slice each of Red Delicious and Granny Smith apples and wrote a description about their favorite. Using the SmartBoard, Ms. Baker then recorded their preferences in a tally and a graph, and each of the students were then instructed to write a description about the data. In addition, the class learned about the life cycle of the apple and read about Johnny Appleseed and science books about the different types of apples.

Garden Reaps Rewards The sunflowers in the courtyard garden at Forest Lake Elementary School stood as tall as the students this fall, the result of much tending by Chris Torrellas’ class. With assistance from a SEPTA and NEFCU grant, the second and third-grade students have reenergized the courtyard
through a beautification project, which includes the planting of perennials, annuals and vegetables. Weeding and the colorful painting of a bench completed the project, but Torrellas said there is more work to do in the coming year. “We started the project last year and the students
are enjoying being outside in the garden,” Torrellas said. “They take great pride in their work.” Torrellas explained that the courtyard beautification project supports the science curriculum and teaches the students community service and life skills.

Bus Etiquette In an effort to continue keeping children safe as they arrive and depart from school, the Levittown School District provided bus safety training by
district drivers. At Lee Road Elementary School, students learned about proper behavior, as well as procedures in the event of an emergency. The
drivers then demonstrated how to safely exit from the rear of the bus during an emergency.
GARDEN OF HOPE - The Garden of Hope Memorial is located on the north side of Sunrise Highway just west of Old Mill Road on the border of Bellmore and Wantagh. The Garden is built as a memorial to those who have died of cancer and also to those who have survived the disease. A section of the Garden of Hope is dedicated to the late Senator Norman Levy, who fought hard to heighten awareness of breast cancer on Long Island. Another section of the Garden of Hope is dedicated to Mary Ellen Farrell, a beloved Wantagh teacher, who lost her battle with cancer.

Field Of Flags For the fourth consecutive year Good Samaritan Hospital, in collaboration with the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a field of pink flags, displayed on the hospital’s front lawn, honoring cancer patients. Supporters gathered to pay tribute to all those affected by the disease. Hospital administration, elected officials, members of the West Islip Fire Department and Coalition were on hand to lend their support. Members of the

This year marked 20 years since Good Samaritan opened its Breast Health Center created in partnership with the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition to improve the region’s efforts at early detection of breast cancer. The Center’s multidisciplinary team includes radiologists dedicated exclusively to state-of-the-art breast imaging, who conference
weekly with pathologists, breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and a team of genetic counselors. The clinical team discusses each case in detail to allow for broad consensus. Oncology nurses and nurse navigators, trained to guide patients through the complex decision-making process that confronts them, round out the team. Recess At Winthrop A little inclement weather doesn’t put a damper on lunchtime recess at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School. On days the weather prevents the students from enjoying an outdoor recess, the boys and girls have the opportunity to participate
in a variety of indoor clubs, as well as watch a movie in the school’s auditorium. “The indoor recess clubs are a great way for children to stay active, even while inside,” said Principal Sally Curto. During the indoor recess days, two students from
each class are selected to participate in the various clubs. The indoor recess clubs available to the students are game, builder, art, gym, recorder, library and computer. These are in addition to the outdoor clubs – garden and walking.
