A beautiful fall day was the perfect backdrop for both Division Avenue and MacArthur high school’s annual homecoming parades and games on September 26th. Friday afternoon pep rallies kicked off the celebration as students and staff demonstrated their spirit during the introduction of sports teams. Prior to Division Avenue High School’s game against North Shore and MacArthur High School’s game against Mepham, students paraded to their perspective school campuses with homemade banners, the band, cheerleaders, clubs and homecoming court as families and friends gathered on local streets to show support. As an annual tradition, senior football players, band members, cheerleaders and dancers were escorted to the field by a significant other to be honored for their service to the community. The halftime shows were packed with performances from the cheerleaders, Dragonettes and Macettes, and the high school bands. During a special presentation, the homecoming court was announced, and Sophia

DeFranco and James Lunetta from Division Avenue High School and James Wolfe and Jasmine Chevez from MacArthur High School were crowned as king and queen. Both the Dragons and

Weathering the Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are few things as unpredictable, and beyond our control, as Mother Nature. If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that hurricane season is not to be taken lightly. Gone are the days of “what are the odds” and “it’s never happened here” … turns out, “not always in your favor” and “now it has” are the answers to such rhetorical musings. Of course, most forecasts are still met with a healthy dose of skepticism, even in these parts of the region where that kind of cynicism resulted in some pretty substantial regrets not so long ago. Meteorologists’ predictions, coupled with dueling “models” mapping

out the potential track of various storm systems does not an exact science make. As a result, the tendency is to ignore such warnings until the eleventh hour and simply hope for the best. The same goes for blizzards, heat advisories … any natural occurrence that might interfere with our daily lives. How dare something as trivial as weather affect our schedules. Until it does. And we are completely unprepared. I will fully admit that I am guilty of such dismissiveness as well. To me, unless I look outside and see it for myself, it’s not reliable information. I don’t see the point in inciting mass hysteria among the public based on a “hunch,” a “chance of” whatever. Show me rain and

wind and sleet and snow and blazing temperatures – maybe I’ll be convinced. Stupid? Sure, in those rare, extreme cases when the forecast is 100% accurate. But you won’t see me rushing out to buy milk and eggs and bread on a whim. Because guess what? When the power goes out, no one’s making French toast. The way I see it, owning a shovel, keeping your gas tank above empty and stocking a few bottles of water and some nonperishables isn’t the kind of thing that should be necessitated by an emergency warning. It’s just practical common sense. If you need a meteorologist to instruct you in those types of preparations, well then, the weather isn’t your biggest concern.

“Please help. I’m alone and scared. I don’t know where I am or how long I have. I never meant for this to happen. All I wanted was to hang out with my friends at a party. None of this was supposed to happen... Help.” Chapter 1 “Hey guys! I got this invitation to a ghost party... get your best white bed sheet out and get your party on!” I said to my friends over the phone. Emma responded “nice” and laughed. Joseph responded, “Got my sheet out and ready!” Alison responded with a laugh. Jonathan responded with, “Sure, if there is candy corn, I’ll be there!” and laughed. Ian responded, “Where is this party? And yes, definitely coming, just

wanna know!” “Ummm...it is on Maple Street...no definite address. We will find it. Gotta be the one with a bunch of cars, lights and music,” I said. They all responded with ok. “Meet me at my house in ten,” I said. Alison said, “Scare ya later,” and we all hung up to get ready. I didn’t want to wear a bed sheet because it seemed too old-fashioned so I put on an all-white outfit, black makeup on my eyes and half red, half black lipstick and some white shoes. My friends all arrived around the same time. We all said hello, got a quick snack before we left, got into my car and left for the party. Chapter 2 It didn’t take long to find the house the party was being

hosted at. We stepped in and were greeted by our host, Jackson. Jackson didn’t seem as normal as the rest. It was a pretty normal party - singing, dancing, eating, talking. But then something happened that changed all that. Jackson came up running toward us in what seemed like fear. After he ran past us, the lights started flickering. At first, we thought it was a joke. Everyone looked around for light switches and soon found out that the lights were fake lights that were put up as decorations for the party, and didn’t even have real light bulbs to light it up. At that time, everyone started to panic. Then a voice came out of nowhere. And then he came. And then IT came.

People concerned about breast cancer are now able to chat online with a social worker or breast cancer survivor through a new service offered by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. In celebration of September as Classical Music Month, Shore Road Elementary School students in the Bellmore School District are learning about some of the world’s most famous classical music composers. In addition to classical music playing during dismissal, a large bulletin board stands in the lobby with pictures and

information about Mozart, Beethoven and other composers who have made a significant contribution to the world of music. September was designated as Classical Music Month in 1994 under President Bill Clinton’s administration to celebrate the artistic talents of musicians throughout the world. As part of this annual

celebration, teacher Laura Laude created the bulletin board in the lobby to emphasize the importance of music, and pictures of famous composers adorn the walls of the music classrooms. In addition to this month’s lessons, students learn facts and notable works by these composers throughout the year.

Day of Celebration With banners blazing in the bright early autumn sunshine, the Wantagh school community took to the streets to celebrate homecoming on September 7th, led by grand marshal Kathleen Cahill, the district’s director of science and technology, and members of the Board of Education and administration. Beginning on Bunker Avenue, the marchers showed their Warriors spirit, with smiles elicited by bear, bee and dolphin mascots from the district’s three elementary schools. Floats from each high school grade class were on prominent display,

with the winner being the sophomores and their creation themed after “The Price Is Right.” As the parade headed north on Wantagh Avenue, each group had a chance to shine, including the Wantagh 6-12 Association, Wantagh Sports Booster Club, WantaghSeaford Homeowners’ Association, Wantagh High School alumni and local Girl Scout troops and cheerleading clubs. The excited crowd reconvened at the football field, and the varsity team took the field against the Long Beach Marines, both looking for their

second win of the year. The halftime show included bravura performances by the band, kickline and cheerleading squad, followed by the announcement of this year’s homecoming king and queen, Luca DiMatteo and Nikki Sliwak. As soon as the game resumed, Sliwak’s twin brother, Kyle, scored on a 15-yard run, the second of four impressive Wantagh TDs for the day. When the last play was complete, the Warriors had shut out Long Beach, 27-0, serving as the perfect cap to a day of pride and community celebration.

The Division Avenue High School competitive marching, band under the direction of Michael Bastone and student drum majors Brandon Hoyt and Michael Mahoney, placed third at their first competition earlier this month in Brentwood.

Their score of 65.35 ranks the band second in the state out of the 12 bands in their class. The band will be working hard throughout the season to improve their show in preparation for the finals competition at Syracuse University

CULINARY DELIGHTS - NuHealth/NUMC officials participated in the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce Culinary Delights fundraiser held at the Carltun. Part of the proceeds from the evening’s event were dedicated to the pediatric unit at the Nassau University Medical Center. NUMC’s dietary division provided and served a delicious sampling of hummus, shrimps with rice, vegetarian chili and butter cookies. Special Visitor It was a special day for Wantagh School District students who received a visit from Jennifer George, author and granddaughter of the late Rube Goldberg. During her visits to each of the schools, Ms. George shared her memories of her famous cartoonist, engineer, sculptor and inventor grandfather and noted the Webster Dictionary’s definition of “Rube Goldberg,” a comically involved, complicated invention, laboriously contrived to perform a simple operation. She also explained that it

took her grandfather two weeks to draw an invention for a “common human problem.” Born in 1880, Rube Goldberg illustrated more than 50,000 cartoons of inventions, which were syndicated in newspapers around the world. Today, the Rube Goldberg contest challenges middle school to college-level students to build the most elaborate and hilarious Rube Goldberg machines. Each year, the Wantagh High School Rube Goldberg team competes in the Rube Goldberg contest.

In February 2015, the team placed first and second in the regional competition, which instructed the students to complete a task of erasing a chalkboard or whiteboard. George explained to future Rube Goldberg competitors enrolled at Forest Lake Elementary School. “You have to stay away from steps that are expected if you want to build a successful Rube Goldberg machine,” she said. tasting. Providing a red, green and yellow apple, Ms. Smith instructed the students to decide which was the largest, smallest and medium-sized apple, recording their answers on a graph. They were also asked to predict whether each apple was either sweet or tart prior to tasting this delicious snack.
