Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+ is the new slogan for the Over 50 Fair, and it definitely was represented by their September 25th event at the Melville Marriott. awareness about substance and alcohol abuse in New York, bringing the community together while walking for a cause. The event honors the

memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdose at age 25. Proceeds from the walk will support Outreach, a non-profit organization

dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The Brower family formed the John Brower, Jr. Foundation to heighten

awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island. After being

Welcome to October, the month when thoughts turn from late summer sunshine and seaside walks to apples and pumpkins and all things autumn. ‘Tis the season before THE season of holiday madness, that lull when – aside from Halloween – one can simply enjoy the crisp air while taking a hay ride with friends, navigating a corn maze or picking up some local produce at the neighborhood farm stand. Personally, I am a girl of summer, basking in

the glow of sunsets and days spent at the beach, of aimless wandering along our many shores in search of hidden oases of beauty. But autumn has its own special unique charm as well. Future Plans and seniors in the college application process. Wantagh Guidance Director Frank Muzio explained that the minicollege fairs are excellent ways for students to shop for colleges. “It is a great opportunity for our students to engage in the college process directly with the representatives,” Muzio said. In addition to hosting the fairs, guidance counselors prepare

students for meaningful interactions with the college representatives through individual and group workshops. The high school also hosts a three-part college program, which introduces important terms and procedures, calendar deadlines for applications, tools for students and parents to evaluate colleges, resources and financial aid.

Wantagh High School students took the next step toward their future by attending the second of three annual minicollege fairs. The annual event parallels with the guidance department’s focus on aiding juniors

In addition to providing a school environment conducive to learning, Winthrop Avenue School faculty and students in the Bellmore School District are collaborating to create a community of riders on all school buses. Called the Peaceful Bus program, students riding on each bus meet periodically with assigned teachers who serve as coaches. During the first

meeting of the year on September 23rd, students and faculty worked on team-building activities. Each student filled out a personal survey and shared their special interests with fellow riders. They also brainstormed ideas for a name for their bus rider group and will later collaborate on writing a mission statement. At the end of the first meeting, the students then talked

with their bus driver about possible bus names and rules they need to follow. Social worker and Peaceful Bus program adviser Dr. Julie Lang said the goal of the program is to “have every student feel safe on the bus and to encourage students to be kind and respectful to each other while riding to school.”

College Board Honorees The College Board has recognized 22 Wantagh High School students as Advanced Placement Scholars for exceptional achievement on the May 2016 national exams. Eighteen students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by receiving a 3 or higher on three or more exams and include: John Bush, Abigail Cullen, Victoria Frusci, Emily Fuchs, Kevin Ganzekaufer, Elizabeth Goldrick,

Rebecca Goldrick, Daniel Hirsch, Joshua Magnes, Adam Markowski, James Moran, Paul Roemer, Robert Seaman, Alyssa Sommer, Benjamin Steinberg, Caroline Sullivan, Christina Weir and Gregory Westhoff. Grace Sullivan received the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams.

Katherine Goldrick, Thomas Sullivan and Christopher Wetzel qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on five or more of these exams. AP courses completed with a score of 3 or higher on the final exam may afford students the opportunity to earn college credit.

Page Turning Seminar Emily Jackson, a fifthgrader at George McVey Elementary School in the East Meadow School District, challenged herself to exceed school librarian Ellen O’Neill’s record of reading 24 books as her summer reading project. Ms. O’Neill was featured in a local newspaper when she was in elementary school for winning a reading contest by reading 24 books during summer vacation. Inspired by the librarian, Emily decided to break Ms. O’Neill’s record

as the goal for her own summer reading project. During the summer, Emily always had a book in hand, whether at the beach, in the mountains or on the soccer field. George McVey Principal Kerry Dunne was very proud of Emily for surpassing Ms. O’Neill’s summer reading record. “I had no idea Emily’s summer reading project was to exceed Ms. O’Neill’s summer reading record,” said Ms. Dunne. “We are all tremendously proud of

Emily’s accomplishment and hope she harvests this love for reading throughout her life.” When Emily returned to school on September 6th, she had accomplished her goal by reading 30 books from cover to cover, a total of 4,000 pages during the summer months. A few of the novels she read included book series “The Baby-Sitters Club,” by Ann M. Martin; “Queen of Likes” by Hillary Homzie; and “Cake Pop Crush” by Suzanne Nelson.

Invited to Perform For the second consecutive year, an East Meadow High School senior has been invited to perform in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl halftime show. Jaden Nogee will join the 125-high school member marching band in San Antonio, Texas from January 2nd through 8th, 2017. On September 23rd, All-American Games representatives and U.S. servicemen held a ceremony acknowledging Jaden for her talent and dedication among

Bellmore-Merrick CSD’s Sanford H. Calhoun High School student Alicia Abramson said she had to concentrate intently and even close one eye to complete a seemingly easy task - stacking cups. The catch was that she was wearing vision impairment goggles to simulate being intoxicated. “I couldn’t imagine being mentally impaired as well as visually,” she commented after completing the task. The simulation was part of a nationwide program, Arrive Alive, which promotes awareness about distracted and drunken driving. It was hosted by the Community Parent Center of BellmoreMerrick. Completing the timed fine motor skill game of Perfection, walking a straight line,

operating pedal cars and a driving video game enables students to fully experience the potential consequences of making destructive decisions. “I don’t even know what is going on right now,” said senior Mike Losak as he steered his video game car into a wall while attempting to avoid a pedestrian. Losak was wearing “beer goggles” to impair his vision. Sophomore Nicole MacLaren said she “lost her balance a lot quicker” than she thought she would while wearing the beer goggles to simply walk a straight chalk line. Max Vandewater, a safety ambassador from the Arrive Alive program, reminded students that even though they may consider themselves skilled

Batting to Beat Cancer at driving and texting or drunken driving, they are “sharing the road with someone who is texting and driving constantly.” “If your eyes leave the road for one second, you could lose your life,” he added. “And every school we visit, we hear a new story about someone who knew someone who did lose their life.” Wendy Tepfer, director of CPC, said she equates distracted driving to driving while intoxicated. “One in three teens will have a crash within their first year of driving,” she said. “And when alcohol is involved, one-third of those crashes result in fatalities.” The program will visit Wellington C. Mepham and John F. Kennedy high schools in the spring.

Get Low and Go Lee Road Elementary School students in the Levittown School District are now more prepared in the event of a fire in their home. During an assembly with Wantagh Fire Department Captain John Licata students in grades 3-5 learned that being proactive and prepared is the best deterrent to being injured during a fire.

“It only takes four minutes for one spark to burn down a house,” Licata said. “So know what to do and act fast. Be proactive by making a family plan.” Licata emphasized the importance of a family escape plan and the need to know two escape routes from the bedroom, as well as a family meeting place. During a video

titled “Fire in Our House,” these messages were also reviewed, as well as the importance of getting low to the ground to avoid smoke inhalation. After the assembly, the students boarded the fire department’s smoke house, where they learned to “get low and go” and to safely exit a window.

The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that 20-year special education teacher Kathy DelGais Butler will be inducted into the Nassau County High School Athletics Hall of Fame during a reception held at Crest Hollow Country Club on September 28th. Her photo will hang with Hall of Fame recipients in the newly constructed Nassau Coliseum. DelGais Butler attended Wantagh High School from 1982-1986, where she played volleyball (captain),

basketball and softball. In basketball, she scored 999 points, a Wantagh High School record held until 2015. As a softball player, DelGais Butler was a Long Island windmill pitcher with a career record of 877, which included 2,421 batters faced with 221 hits, 780 strikeouts and 42 walks. Her career ERA was 0.273 in which she pitched one perfect game with 18 strike outs, 20 no-hitters and 15 one-hitters. In addition to having received the designation

of All-County honors in all three sports, DelGais Butler was recognized as a Daily News All-Star (1983-1986) in softball. Sports Illustrated ranked her as 12th in the nation in innings pitched in her senior year at LIU Post, where she also received ECAC first team honors. The Nassau County Pitcher of the Year Award is now named The Kathy DelGais Butler Pitcher of the Year Award, and she was inducted into the New York State Softball Hall of Fame in 2014. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) I FISH NY Program’s annual Fall Family Fishing Festival will be held on Saturday, October 15th, at Hempstead Lake State Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., DEC Regional Director Carrie Meek Gallagher announced today. DEC’s I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit is sponsoring the event along with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). “The Fall Family Fishing Festival is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and learn something about the

great fun of freshwater fishing,” Regional Director Gallagher said. “The festival combines the opportunity to fish with a variety of activities for children to guarantee a fun outdoor experience for families.” A fishing license is not required to fish at this event and admissions and parking are free. The festival begins at 10 a.m. with casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish-cleaning services. The festival will also feature displays by Trout Unlimited, DEC Environmental Education, OPRHP, as well as other fishing and environmental organizations. Children’s activities will begin at 10 a.m.

and include pumpkin decorating, the Raptor Project Show, a bounce slide, and face painting. Participants can catch a pumpkin or “hook” a prize in a casting contest held by the Knights of Columbus of Seaford.

To date, the Brower family has donated more than $37,000 to Outreach. “The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise

awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. F.I.R.S.T. FUNDRAISER - The F.I.R.S.T. Foundation for Ichthyosis and related skin types was recently held at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh on August 27th. Among those in attendance were Marc, Eric, Marc and Denise Benedetto of Wantagh.

FIRE ISLAND FIELD TRIP - Recently, Packs 96 and 189, of Wantagh, boarded a ferry to Fire Island. Together, they took a Ranger-guided tour of the unique ecosystem of the Sunken Forest. They learned about all the animals that live in the park as well as the special plants that are able to live in such a special environment. The boys identified four different animals for their Call of The Wild requirements and also learned about how climate change is impacting this fragile place. Following the tour, both packs enjoyed a nice picnic on the pristine beach before taking the ferry back to Long Island.

OPRHP will stock South and McDonald ponds in Hempstead Lake State Park with hundreds of brook and rainbow trout. DEC stocks several water bodies in Nassau and Suffolk counties with brown trout in October, including: Upper Twin Pond, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Reservoir, and 12 other Suffolk County lakes. Completed by October 15th, these stockings will provide excellent prospects for fall fishing. A second DEC stocking will occur by November 5th. Quilt Honors Victims During the September 21st Levittown School District Board of Education meeting, the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center Key Club unveiled a 10’ x 10’ quilt commemorating the 15th anniversary of September 11th, 2001. The two-year project was constructed with squares depicting the heartfelt and personalized sentiments

of contributors including GC Tech students, faculty and community members. The hand-drawn, painted and embroidered pieces of material confer each individual conception relating to the terrorist attacks. Although the students were too young to remember the attacks in detail, they were still able to reflect on this dark historical moment.

The 9/11 quilt will hang on the wall outside of the district superintendent’s office throughout the 2016-2017 school year and will be gifted to the Levittown Public Library this coming summer. Key Club adviser Lillian Creedon said, “This was our way of honoring all of the beloved lives lost that day.”

Partner of the Future Levittown student Annie Tao, a senior science research student at Division Avenue High School, was accepted to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Partners for the Future Program. Developed in 1990, this prestigious program is offered to select students on Long Island who show great promise in biomedical and basic

biologic research. During this yearlong research program, Annie will conduct independent research alongside some of the world’s leading researchers and will have access to stateof-the-art technology, equipment and laboratory materials. Her research will focus on the study of mutations and the timing

of gene expression in a strand of caenorhabditis elegans (worms). At the conclusion of the program, Annie will present her research to peers and laboratory mentors and administrators. The Levittown School District congratulates Annie on this prestigious accomplishment.

teacher Lisa Levenberg conducted the chorus, an ensemble of singers from both high schools. Curriculum Associate for Music Vincent D’Ulisse explained that being invited to perform at Citi Field is an accomplishment in itself, but invited for a third time

Butcher, Carissa Giuliano, Jake Iannacone and James May are among the 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students are recognized for having placed among the top 5 percent of more than

1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). The district congratulates these students on this exceptional achievement.

In following the Bellmore School District’s leadership principles, students enrolled in the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, Winthrop Avenue and Shore Road schools have been working within their classrooms to create mission statements. The mission statements are now hung on a communal bulletin board outside

the main office of each building. According to the district’s Star Leadership Principles, students should “begin with an end in mind” by planning ahead and setting goals, looking for ways to become good citizens and contributing to the classrooms’ and schools’ missions and vision for learning.

According to Jody Leibowitz’s fifth-grade class at Shore Road, being attentive and kind and raising a hand to acquire the attention of the teacher are some examples of leadership qualities included in the class’ mission to become star learners.

Dragon Pride Reigns A beautiful, clear blue sky was the perfect backdrop for Levittown School District’s Division Avenue High School’s annual homecoming parade and game on September 24th. Prior to the game, clubs and members of each class paraded from Wisdom Lane Middle School, down Hempstead Turnpike and onto Division Avenue with homemade banners, and members of the homecoming court rode on the back of decorated convertibles.

English teacher Mike Verdi also served as the grand marshal. The high school marching band and cheerleaders led the way as families and Levittown residents gathered on the sides of local streets to show their support. To kick off the game, Alexa McCall and Erin McCall led the community in the Pledge of Allegiance while Jaida Rivera sang the national anthem. The halftime show was packed with performances from the cheerleaders, the kickline

Strength for Life Strength for Life would like to thank Barbara Larrea and the World Gym Wantagh for organizing “Cycle for Strength,” held September 24th at Mulcahy’s, the third epic two-hour event, with participants invited to ride in honor of a cancer warrior. Enormous effort was put forth by Ms. Larrea to organize this event and by the Team and Family of World Gym Wantagh. Over $50,000 was raised by this generous community, and the sponsors of the event. In the past three years, the Wantagh World Gym has held this event and chose Strength for Life as a beneficiary with the total raised over $110,000. Strength for Life relies on our fundraising events to provide these services and World Gym Wantagh relieved a heavy burden during these years. This year, each of the 92 riders was asked to fundraise $350 for the event and nearly all exceeded their goal. The energy at Mulcahy’s was palpable as the riders entered, claimed their bike, bought raffles and prepared for the

experience. Barbara Larrea, on center stage, led the riders on a fantastic journey, combining her heartfelt, inspiring coaching, fabulous sounds and personalized World Gym video. Add in food, libations and raffles galore. 80 baskets and 11 grand prizes. The proceeds from the raffles of $6,000 were presented to a World Gym warrior fighting a recurrence - but strong, beautiful, confident and riding with the rest. Strength for Life (SFL), is a non-profit dedicated to providing free exercise programs designed to enhance the recovery process of persons with a cancer diagnosis throughout Long Island communities. Services provided include educating cancer patients, caregivers and the medical community on the benefits of incorporating exercise into the treatment regimen and its effect on reducing the risk of certain cancers and re-occurrences, along with improving bodily functional activities. Programs are conducted by certified cancer

exercise specialists in a group setting and held at 11 accessible locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Over the past seven years, SFL has reached more than 1,700 patients and survivors. World Gym Wantagh hosts classes twice a week, and they are forever grateful for the beautiful room and welcoming staff. Many survivors are initially intimidated to go back into the gym environment. Their intent is to empower them to embrace the “new normal” and feel confident enough to go back to their previous activities. Learning of the astronomical copays of a cancer diagnosis and how it can make it financially difficult for many to work with a personal trainer, Strength for Life has tried to eliminate all the barriers – travel, equipment, cost and qualified cancer exercise specialists. They are truly blessed to have been introduced to Ms. Larrea, World Gym Wantagh, and the scores of people she inspires to support the cause, Strength for Life.

PUZZLE ANSWERS: Bethpage High School science research teacher Chris Pollatos has been named Long Island Science Teacher of the Year in the junior division by the Long Island Science Congress. Nominated for the award, receipt of it is based on student successes

in the area. Mr. Pollatos has been a science teacher in the Bethpage School District since 2003 and began teaching science research in September 2012. He earned both his bachelor’s degree in geology and secondary education,
