Odds & Ends the television is an ideal way to decompress. With that, the new fall tv season is upon us, providing hours of entertainment to choose from, or randomly flip through, as the case may be. It’s funny, but back in the old VCR days, I would painstakingly plan out my viewing schedule, determining which shows to watch live, which to record, sometimes on multiple devices. Now, with the advent of DVR, I record almost everything, preferring instead to fast forward through the commercials. Of course, with this, you run the risk of having particularly popular plot lines “spoiled” for you on social media, due to everyone’s incessant need to instantaneously offer a running commentary on just about every aspect of life. What ever did we do before Twitter, I wonder? Speaking of, rumor has it

that the social media giant will be doubling the character limit of its Tweets, a piece of “news” completely irrelevant to most people; yet somehow, it has dominated the news cycle of late. Sometimes, concise is the way to be. No need to elaborate. The more space we have, the more we tend to ramble on… and, well, you know… But I digress. As October sets in, and perhaps with it a bit of autumnal weather - not that I’m complaining about the Indian summer we have been enjoying - hopefully everyone will take advantage of the fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking and Halloween festivities happening from one end of the island to the next. Or perhaps a simple stroll through the changing leaves is more your speed. If so, might I suggest a pair of tap shoes? It does tend to lighten the mood. Happy October everyone!

with Jamie Lynn Ryan So begins year two of the great “unretirement” from dance, as I dusted off the old tap shoes yet again and made my way back to the studio of my childhood once more. There is something to be said for recapturing your youth, however recent it may have been. In some ways, it is even better the second time around, as we all seem to have a newfound appreciation for the respite it provides from daily life. It is important for everyone to discover their own outlet, whether it be in the form of mental or physical release, as we each have our share of stresses to contend with. Sometimes, isolating a simple moment to take a deep breath and collect your thoughts is all that is needed. Other times, an hour spent unwinding while reading a few chapters of a book, listening to a record or even vegging out in front of

Starting Strong Paul Giorlando and Isabel Jaime, who find their way to a hotel to spend the night. They soon find out that it is no ordinary hotel and that they have traveled to another dimension. In addition, the band competed on September 24th at Copiague’s Tournament of Bands and received a score of 67.85, earning them the first place trophy in their

A Better Lunchbox

Never could I find You in places I’ve looked It was You who found me, for this I humbly mistook Praying for favors which never arrived Yet there were moments amazingly I’d come alive When Your power instilled in me the urge to strive Finding light from darkness, I felt it arrive It comes down to this when your spirit is low Keep praying to Him and your resolve will grow.
Mushed sandwiches, cracked chips and leaking drinks are a thing of the past as second-grade students in Colleen Conway’s STEAM class at Wantagh Elementary School utilized engineering skills and the design process to build a better lunchbox. After collectively reading Andrea Beaty’s
“Rosie Revere, Engineer,” the students took on the roles of engineers. Using only tin foil, wax paper, cotton batting and Popsicle sticks, they employed collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity to build lunch boxes that preserve their daily meals. After the new lunch boxes were complete, the
second-graders shared their designs and discussed what worked well and where improvements could be made. They also used mathematics principles to graph their results. During the 2017-2018 school year, the Wantagh School District expanded its STEAM program by hiring Ms. Conway with emphasis on grades K-2.

The Levittown School District invites friends, families and community members to join in Division Avenue High School’s annual homecoming festivities on October 14th. The Blue Dragons will play the Plainedge High School Red Devils during the school’s big football game that evening. To kick off the festivities, the school will showcase their spirit with a parade at 2 p.m. starting from Wisdom Lane Middle School and ending at Division Avenue High School. The parade will feature Division Avenue freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, high school marching band,
Wisdom Lane marching band, homecoming court, kickline and the cheerleading team. Following the parade, a special flower ceremony to honor the senior athletes will be conducted at 2:45 p.m. on the football field. Prior to the beginning of the big game, the Levittown School’s District’s inaugural Hall of Fame will induct six Levittown alumni who have made an impact on the community and beyond. Inductees will include Levittown Memorial High School graduates, songwriter Ellie Greenwich, former town supervisor Kate Murray, coach Doug Robins and
fireman Kevin McKinney. Two Division Avenue High School graduates, New York State Supreme Court Justice Thomas Feinman and town councilman Dennis Dune Sr., will also be recognized as Hall of Famers. The kickoff will begin at 5 p.m. and feature a variety of concession stands including food, apparel, face painting and more. In addition, half time will include the homecoming court and king and queen crowning. Attendees will also enjoy performances by the cheerleading team, kickline and marching band.

Setting an Example The valuable messages of empathy, acceptance and understanding differences were supported with an important assembly recently conducted at Levy Lakeside Elementary School by the myFace organization. Representatives from myFace, a nonprofit organization that creates awareness and helps improve the lives of people living with craniofacial conditions focused on celebrating uniqueness and choosing to be kind. Students listened to stories shared by children impacted with craniofacial conditions and learned about the importance of
being an upstander during an assembly arranged by school library educator Melissa Levine, reading specialist Jenn Stein and school social worker Lori Schneider. As part of the assembly, the speakers discussed the heartfelt books “We’re All Wonders” and “Wonder,” by R.J. Palacio, as well as her inspirations behind these stories. Both books share the story of a young boy who, after undergoing 27 surgeries to address a facial abnormality, enrolls in public school, where he’s subjected to name-calling due to his physical condition. Young readers of the book
develop compassion and respect for the character and are reminded of the importance of being kind. While there, myFace video recorded interviews with students Hunter Hoehn, Caroline Jacoby, Brianna Okolie, Rachel Watson and Noah Zinman, who were asked to share their thoughts on the books, assemblies and experiences related to diversity, bullying, kindness and tolerance. The video will run on the myFace website (www.myface.org) and YouTube during the month of October as part of their National Bullying Prevention Month.
Back to School Picnic Birch Elementary School in Merrick recently held its annual Back to School Picnic, sponsored by the Birch School PTA.

Task of Kindness During an assembly with 3 Screens Academic Entertainment, Inc., fifthand sixth-grade students enrolled at Shore Road School in the Bellmore School District were encouraged to complete a task of kindness by being responsible to one another. The event tied in with the district’s 2017-2018 character education theme “Mind, Body, Heart” and challenged the students to look inside their hearts
to find a good deed for someone. “Everyone has the ability to be kind,” presenter Greg Evers said. “There is a need everywhere and others are waiting for you.” Three screens were assembled to create a 43-foot-wide video wall that projected stories about how young people have made a positive difference in the lives of others in a program titled “Start to Finish.” Although
the activity pointed out that kindness and caring were actions that should never stop, unhealthy choices, such as bullying and dangerous use of the internet were also addressed. “We constantly talk about continuous improvement in our lives,” Principal Patrice Matthews noted, “but how can we think more about our heart and our relationships with others?”

Bringing Fred to Safety Fred was in quite the predicament when his boat capsized, and students at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District had to use their smarts to save him. Third-graders in Brenda Adragna’s and Celeste Diogo’s classes recently participated in a STEAM activity, Save Fred, which required problem-solving
and critical thinking. The setup involved a plastic cup turned upside down, representing the overturned boat, covering a gummy ring that was serving as the life preserver. On top of the cup was Fred the gummy worm. Students worked in teams to figure out how to get Fred into his life preserver without him falling into the water. They
could only use four paper clips and could not touch any part of the setup with their hands. The project taught students how to use the scientific method, as they had to come up with a plan to save Fred before testing it. They had to listen to each other’s ideas to come up with the best solution.

A few secret ingredients helped Sara Adcock, a student at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District, and her team win first place in a cooking competition on September 16th. The Junior Garlic Iron Chef Competition, hosted by Garden of Eve during their annual Long Island Garlic Festival, was open to contestants ages 1018. Adcock, 14, said she developed the tomato sauce recipe from scratch two years ago when she first competed in the culinary competition. This time, the updated sauce earned the team a perfect
score - the first one in the competition’s 14-year history. Techniques learned at Michael DiGiovanni’s class in the district’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Program helped her perfect the sauce. “I now know how to properly and professionally chop ingredients, particularly the garlic, onions and spices,” Adcock said. Technique is key when starting out with the unique tomato-based sauce recipe. Adcock said she first sweats the garlic and onions to draw out the flavor, whereas most people sauté them, trapping in the

Student Sauces oils inside the ingredients. “The flavor from the inside of the garlic comes out, infusing the sauce even more,” she added. She thinks the addition of two distinctive spices: Adobo seasoning and marjoram leaves are what elevate the recipe from traditional ones. Adcock’s saucy win earned her a trophy, T-shirt and farm gift basket – and of course bragging rights. She shared the news - and a sample of her prizewinning sauce - with DiGiovanni. “It is a well-rounded sauce with nice body and a little heat,” he explained.

Photographers Recognized
A duo of photo aficionados was honored at the September meeting of the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce. Longtime Wantagh resident Colleen Casabianca and Sean Fitzthum of Seaford were each recognized for achieving five wins in the Wantagh Photo Contest. To mark the occasion, Colleen and Sean were each awarded $100 in Wantagh Chamber Gift Certificates, a one year subscription to the Herald Citizen, a Commemorative Trophy and a Town Certificate of Recognition. Colleen, an 18-year Wantagh resident, has been a photo enthusiast for as long as she could remember. Colleen explains that “it wasn’t anything or anyone in particular” that motivated her to pursue the art “I’ve just always loved taking pictures.” Colleen’s “absolute favorite” variety “would have to be silhouettes” with “nature a close second” - the very genres that helped garner the impressive wins. Since her 32nd birthday when husband Maurizio bought her first digital
camera, she has been hooked on digital and since forsaken film. Colleen is no stranger to photo triumphs; she came in 4th last year in the Newsday Funbook contest. Colleen concludes “capturing moments and preserving the emotions that go with them - that’s the beauty of photography.”. Native Long Islander Sean Fitzthum was attending AiNYC for graphic design, when he took a photography class and was “immediately hooked.” In addition to his formal education, Sean credits his old roommate/ photographer Chris Kozloff and the school of hard knocks for his talent. As Sean puts it, “I learn something new every time I go shooting.” Sean enjoys “all kinds of photography” but his favorite is a tossup between concert photos and cityscapes - with the former genre garnishing his fifth win. This adept photographer learned on digital, in fact, he never shot on film which is lucky for his wallet, as he has taken almost a quarter million photos. Sean’s photo enterprise,
SMF Photos, is where he captures a variety of images for clients including cityscapes, concert and travel. Other competitions that Sean has won include Newsday’s Photo of the Week and he was one of 50 finalists whose work was displayed in the lobby of the Empire State Building. Sean was also featured on News12, NBC 4 News, Fox 5 News and NY1. Since September 2002, the Wantagh website has sponsored this free photography competition providing all with an opportunity to submit their photos taken in Wantagh. Winning photographers receive an official signed certificate and a Wantagh gift which gets better with each win. The winning photo and the photographer’s name are posted on the homepage for the winning month, and are posted permanently in the winner’s list. Renna (Trustee) and Charlie Clyne (Trustee) of the Christina Renna Foundation to Hempstead Town Hall to proclaim September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in Hempstead Town. The foundation, named for Christina, who died of a soft tissue cancer at 16
years old, seeks to raise awareness of childhood cancers through its Gold Ribbon Campaign. Hempstead Town will be featuring gold ribbons on lampposts, signs, etc at Hempstead Town Hall from September 1st-30th.
Fifteen students from the Levittown School District’s Northside Elementary School recently participated in the 2017 Levittown Summer Music Program. Some began studies on a newly chosen musical instrument, getting a head
start at learning to play for the upcoming school year. Other students continued practicing and making progress on the instrument that they had already studied in order to become more proficient in their performances at either Northside or Wisdom Lane
Middle School. Instruction on string instruments was given by Jill Castillo and instruction on band instruments was given by Matthew Nobile. The young musicians were highly successful and enjoyed their studies.
