NYS Senate Majority Delegation called on MTA to Protect LIRR riders from a fare increase. In addition to being one of only 20 students to earn a Scholar-Artist designation by the Long Island Arts Alliance, Bethpage High School senior Michelle Zheng was honored with the highest overall score for her portfolio. The prestigious award carries with it the highest possible level of media attention for students and for their

district art programs. Zheng was the top of art students on Long Island that met the criteria of an unweighted average of at least 90 and a portfolio submission containing 10 works of art. The portfolio must demonstrate both technical and conceptual skill in addition to a written essay. The portfolio submitted

by Zheng contained work created in Courtney Young’s fine arts class at the high school in addition to independent projects. The Long Island Arts Alliance held its annual Scholar-Artist Gala on Sept. 12 at the Tilles Center for Performing Arts on the campus of LIU Post.

As I write this column on a Friday morning, my mind is already filled with the promise of tranquility, relaxation and family time that Saturday and Sunday brings. Ah… the finish line at last; it’s Friday! “TGIF,” or as Rihanna says, “Cheers to the Freakin’ Weekend!” For those of us that lead hectic, multi-tasking lives during the week, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The promise of a Friday, and the relief it brings, is necessary for re-centering our spirits and re-charging our batteries. I think we can all agree that there is nothing wrong with loving Fridays. However, I want to encourage everyone reading this to… wait for it… also love Mondays. Don’t hate me. I’ll never forget a New York Times article I read years ago that ominously stated, “Heart Attacks Are More Common on Mondays.” Why would more heart attacks happen on a Monday? It’s just

another day of the week. The “why” is in our perception and our anticipation of what Monday means. Dr. Joe Dispenza, a prominent researcher in the field of the mind/body connection, famously explains, “Thoughts are the domain of the mind, while feelings are the domain of the body.” In other words, our brain processes the fact that it’s Monday, our mind creates a thought and a story around that fact, and then our body reacts to the story our mind tells us. Follow? If we tell ourselves that Monday is the start of “another long, stress-filled week,” our body will then react to that negative story we are telling the mind. You can probably trace this back to when you were a kid and dreading having to return to school on Monday, after a funfilled and carefree weekend. This thought pattern is a habit, nothing more. Let’s re-frame the story we tell ourselves about Monday. Monday is a new opportunity to put all of that inspiration and clarity you’ve gained during the weekend to work for you. It’s a new day

to create a more successful, empowered outcome than you experienced the previous week. Let’s look at it this way: weekends are for rest and relaxation, while Mondays are for action and innovation. Isn’t that a better story to tell ourselves about Monday? If you begin repeating this affirmation to yourself enough times, your mind will start to integrate it, and your body will begin to respond inkind. I can’t tell you how many times I was enjoying a relaxing, fun-filled weekend when I was unexpectedly struck with an AhHa moment. Suddenly, I was champing at the bit for Monday morning, so that I could put this lightning bolt of inspiration to work in a new and exciting way. Mondays are the days that dreams are made of. Make that call, send that email, present that idea, and when another Friday rolls around, celebrate all you’ve accomplished by treating yourself to a fabulous weekend.

Gwen Stefani: Just A Girl About to Take Over Las Vegas By Allison Kugel

Gwen Stefani spent her childhood and adolescence in Anaheim, California, a suburban girl living a stone’s throw from Disneyland. It was her older brother, Eric, who founded No Doubt, that would help Stefani make her way into the musical limelight with their 1995 breakout album, Tragic Kingdom. The band’s unique sound coupled with Stefani’s platinum blonde hair, red lips and punk rock fashion, brought the singer to Rockstar status in the 1990s. Her first solo album, 2004’s Love. Angel. Music. Baby. and L.A.M.B. fashion label, catapulted her into the music and style icon stratosphere in the early 2000s. Follow up albums like 2006’s The Sweet Escape and No Doubt’s 2012 reunion album, Push and Shove capped off two decades of non-stop recording and touring for the Grammy-winning artist.

This summer, the hitmaking mom of Kingston, 11, Zuma, 9, and Apollo, 4, is preparing to embark on her Las Vegas Residency at Zappos Theatre at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. It’s called, what else? Gwen Stefani: Just A Girl – an homage to her first single to make the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. I sat down with Gwen to discuss this new chapter in her life. Allison Kugel: Was this Las Vegas Residency a family decision? Gwen Stefani: As a mom, if you look at my touring for the last ten years, I haven’t really toured. In the past, I did tour for seven years. It’s hard with the kids, because they’re in school and I’m not home schooling. I did my last tour because I had this unexpected life crisis and then the music came pouring out of me from

that. It was such a lifesaver and a beautiful moment for me to be able to write again. I put that tour on at the last minute (referring to her “This Is What The Truth Feels Like” tour) and went on a summer tour with the kids. It was so much fun for them. They love touring, but it isn’t realistic. Allison Kugel: What does performing live give you, personally and energetically? Gwen Stefani: Being on stage for me, I always forget how much it’s a part of who I am. I’ve done it for my whole life, pretty much. I always think I don’t want to do it. I always think it’s fine if I never do it again. Then when I get on stage, even when I’m sound checking, I’m like, “Oh My God, I love this!” I love my music, I love being up there, I love the attention and I love being able to share that love with people and get that exchange. I don’t understand why I like it so much. Allison Kugel: It feeds your soul. You’re connecting with source and you’re in a zone. Gwen Stefani: It’s my gift. It’s what I’m here for. I’m obviously at the end of my journey of being a musician… Allison Kugel: Why would you say that? Gwen Stefani: Well because of my age, and I’ve been doing it for thirty something years. It’s perfect for me to be able to do a Las Vegas show, because not only does it work for me as a mom, but it also works creatively. It’s a new challenge. It’s going to be a way to express myself and do my whole catalog of music that defines every single period in my life.

Allison Kugel: And your audience is going to get a more intimate experience with you than they would in a stadium setting. Gwen Stefani: It is a much smaller audience than I’m used to, under five thousand people. It’s going to be so different and that’s something I need. When you’ve toured for however many years I have, it’s super awesome, but let’s do something new! That’s why even doing The Voice for the last couple of years was so inspiring for me. I think everybody wants something challenging and new to look forward to. Allison Kugel: You went to see Jennifer Lopez’s Las Vegas show, All I Have. I’m assuming the two of you discussed her Las Vegas Residency. Did she give you any advice? Gwen Stefani: I’ve always looked up to Jennifer in the sense that we’re exactly the same age, and I remember when No Doubt was coming out and she hadn’t done Jenny from The Block yet, but she had that song out, Waiting for Tonight. At the time I was working with Prince and he started comparing me and Jennifer, and at that time I didn’t even see how I was in the same category with her. She was Jennifer Lopez and I was in a band called No Doubt (laughs). But now here we both are doing these residencies all these years later. She’s always invited me to her kids’ birthday parties and things like that. She is a crazy worker. I cannot believe how much she works! Allison Kugel: It doesn’t seem human, right? Multiple television shows, Las Vegas Residency, albums… Gwen Stefani: I know. I don’t understand it. Going to see her, I was studying the production of her show. The show was incredible, and she works so hard on stage. It was so inspiring to see… and scary! When I came backstage to talk to her afterwards, she comes out of the dressing room looking like a Barbie Doll. She was breathtaking on stage, but when you see her up close, it’s like, “What?! It’s not possible. You are so gorgeous!” She was just so glamorous. We talked for awhile and she was like, “Yeah, I’ve just done 100 shows…” And I’m like, “Whoa, that’s a lot of shows!” (Laughs) And she still has forty more to go. She’s really enjoyed it, but she said it is challenging. Allison Kugel: The title of your Las

Vegas show, Just A Girl, is the title of one of your biggest hits, but it has a double meaning for you. You’re always saying, “I’m just a girl from Orange County…” Is that your way of keeping yourself grounded? Gwen Stefani: Honestly, I think if you really knew me or saw my family and how I grew up, I am 100% the same person I have always been. When I wrote that song, Just A Girl, I was twenty-five years old, going to college, still living at my parent’s house, and I was very naïve. I was driving one day and I’m thinking, “Wow! I really have a different position in this world, being that I’m a female.” Allison Kugel: Has Blake Shelton (Stefani’s boyfriend of three years) had creative input with this Las Vegas show? Gwen Stefani: Obviously he’s my best friend, so I’m bouncing stuff off him all the time. He’s one of those people in my life that’s super supportive and gets me motivated. There’s a whole bunch of songs about him in the show. Like anybody, with their best friend, we share everything together. Allison Kugel: What’s your routine before you step out on stage? Do you pray? Do you meditate? How do you gear up to give your best performance? Gwen Stefani: I don’t meditate. I’m a prayer. I pray, but first I do my makeup (laughs). My makeup is huge for me. Putting on my makeup and getting ready, there is a kind of meditation in the preparation. And the praying for me is really important. We do a group prayer circle. When I think about how ordinary I’ve always been, and to think that I’ve created all these songs, I don’t know where they

come from. I always think that it’s got to be a channeling, and it just comes through me. It’s a spiritual thing that has been given to me to share. Responsive Classroom Pilot Classes at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District showcased a pilot program called “responsive classrooms” on the morning of September 18th, by holding morning meetings between teachers and students. Inside the kindergarten and first-grade classrooms of Krystal Mancuso and Amy DePaulo, respectively, students gathered to

greet one another while also engaging in sharing discussions, group activities and morning messages. In Mrs. Mancuso’s class, students made eye contact before shaking each other’s hands. Students also shared stories of a recent activity and some even told jokes. The objective of the morning meetings is to allow students to gather

as a community while merging social, emotional and intellectual learning, in addition to creating a climate of trust and respectful interaction. Classes at Bowling Green Elementary School are also engaged in this pilot program. If successful, this program could be expanded to more classrooms and other district elementary schools in 2019.

Responding to the need in her own practice, breast surgeon Dr. Virginia Maurer first made breast health education programs available to her patients and to their families. These programs became so successful, which encouraged her to reach out to the general public, but particularly to adolescent women through high school breast health programs. One of Dr. Maurer’s beliefs is that the choices we make early in life can affect our future beast health. Dr. Maurer actively participates as Founder, motivator and as an inspiration for this foundation. As of today, the Maurer Foundation has brought their life-saving message of breast cancer prevention and early detection to over 80% of Long Island’s Public High Schools! From reaching just over a thousand people in 1995, The Maurer Foundation, supported by steadfast board members, experienced staff and gifted volunteers, has continued to broaden their capacity, allowing them to reach hundreds of thousands of people! National Merit Semifinalists The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that Tyler Lucher, Brianna McCartney and Samantha Minars were named three of the nation’s 16,000 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program competition. The students will continue in the competition for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, which altogether totals more than $31 million, and which will be offered this spring. The students entered

the competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highestscoring entrants in each state. Tyler is a member of Mathletes and is the agenda chair for the school’s Model Congress. He is treasurer of the Chess Club and a volunteer for the Wantagh Public Library’s summer reading program. He intends on pursuing a

career in either computer science or software engineering. Brianna is a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the World Language and Tri-M Music honor societies. She plays the violin in the school orchestra and is a member of Mathletes and Science Olympiad. Brianna studies Irish dancing and is passionate about volunteering, as president of the Outreach Club and Youth Court. She plans on studying law or pursuing a career with Homeland Security.

National Merit Semifinalists Two students from the East Meadow School District were selected as National Merit Semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The district congratulates East Meadow High School senior John Meah and W.T. Clarke High School senior Jonathan Melkun.

A total of 16,000 U.S. semifinalists have been identified out of an initial pool of 1.6 million U.S. students who took last year’s PSAT/NMSQT, a qualifying test. Now, they will each contend for finalist titles, with the prospect of eventually earning one of the 7,500 National Merit

Scholarships worth more than $31 million. This year’s semifinalists scored in the top 1 percent nationally on the exam. Finalists will be announced in February and winners of the National Merit Scholarships will be named this spring.

Three students from Bethpage High School have been chosen to perform in the New York State School Music Association’s AllState ensembles at the annual Winter Conference, after being recognized by NYSSMA for music excellence. The conference will be held in Rochester from November 29th

through December 2nd. The three musicians selected are Will Katartzis (voice) A.J. Vita (guitar) and Soham Maiti (bass guitar). More than 6,500 sophomores and juniors within the state performed in NYSSMA solo evaluation festivals last spring with the hopes of being selected

for All-State. Students that received a score between 98 and 100 after being evaluated by a NYSSMA All-State judge on their solo performance would qualify. The district commends Will, A.J. and Soham on their accomplishments and selections.

Kitchen remodels are a popular home improvement project that help homeowners recoup large percentages of their initial investments at resale. A kitchen remodel can invigorate a home and make the most popular room in the house more functional. According to HomeAdvisor, a homeimprovement informational guide, homeowners spend an average of $22,000 on kitchen remodels. However, lavish projects can cost more than $50,000. Protecting such investments is important and requires that homeowners understand how to properly maintain kitchen features so they have the longest life possible. This includes the new countertops that make the kitchen look complete. Countertops come in various materials, not all of which should be treated the same way. Quartz, granite, marble, laminate, and tile countertops require different types of maintenance. Quartz Engineered quartz countertops are popular. Quartz countertops are nearly

maintenance-free and resistant to stains, scratches and even heat. Quartz will not need to be sealed like natural stone and can be cleaned using just a damp cloth with a mild, nonabrasive soap. Granite Polished or honed granite countertops offer a high-end look that adds instant value to a kitchen. Natural variations in granite give each kitchen a custom look. To keep granite countertops clean, avoid abrasive cleansers that can scratch, and opt for warm, soapy water instead. Stains are possible, but can be remedied with a baking soda paste left to sit for a couple of hours, advises Angie’s List. Wipe up oils, acids and soda promptly to avoid stains, and follow advised sealing routines. Marble Marble is a natural stone that is porous and will need to be resealed periodically. Because marble has high levels of the mineral calcite, it can be reactive when acids come in contact with it, and etch marks may appear. Promptly wipe away tomato juice, lemon juice, perfume, or

toothpaste. Marble is softer than granite and will wear at a faster rate. Avoid scratching and exercise caution when using knives or sharp objects around marble. Laminate One of the more budget-friendly materials, laminate countertops can be fabricated to mimic the look of natural stone, wood or even quartz. Laminate is less resistant to damage than other materials and will need a gentle touch. Formica® says to never use abrasive cleansers, scouring pads or steel wool when cleaning laminate countertops. For tough stains, an allpurpose cleaner should sufﬁce when applied with a nylon-bristled brush. Test any cleanser in a discreet area ﬁrst. Tile Cleaning tile countertops requires getting

into crevices along the grout lines. A toothbrush and a mildew-ﬁghting cleaner or bleach diluted with water is advised. Also, unglazed tiles need to be sealed yearly. Some soap may leave residue, which can be removed with a solution of vinegar and water. Check with the manufacturer or installer of the countertops to learn more about the ways to clean and maintain new counters.

Basement remodeling tips A basement remodeling project can add valuable and usable space to a home. For many years, homeowners overlooked the potential of a basement remodel, perhaps thinking it would not be a smart return on investment. But that’s no longer the case. The latest “Cost vs. Value” report from Remodeling magazine says the average basement remodel can cost around $61,000 with a 70.3 percent recoup rate. In addition, HGTV says architects and contractors indicate the cost of redoing a basement is roughly one-third to one-half less than the price of putting an addition on a home. Before remodeling a basement, homeowners should think about how they want to use the space. Homeowners also must focus on some potential obstacles in a basement that will need to be addressed so that the area can be as functional as possible. Basements can be chilly and damp. That means moisture issues and heating and cooling needs must be addressed prior to

any construction. Homeowners may have to consider the installation of a dehumidifier and run venting through the basement to allow for proper climate control. If a basement takes on water, either through the walls or a concrete slab, a professional waterproofing company can come in and fix these issues so they will not damage drywall and flooring afterwards. The presence of insects and pests also must be addressed. Exterminators can help homeowners figure out which insects are in their basements and how to make the space less hospitable to these unwelcome guests so that the room will become comfortable for human occupants. Space is often at a premium in basements, which may contain HVAC units, water heaters, filtration devices, ductwork, pipes, and the other appliances. Setting his sights on a future career as an oncologist, Division Avenue High School senior Brandon Smith attended the ten-day National Student Leadership Conference in Washington, DC during the summer, where he was enrolled in the medicine and health

Among the creations were a sunset, a paint palette, a clown face, balloons in the air and a bear holding a fish. “They really had to use their imaginations,” Ms. Fischetti said. The project was based upon the Peter H. Reynolds book, The Dot. The book shows children that they can make their mark on the world. After creating their drawings and writing about

the book’s life lessons, students created Flipgrid videos using iPads. Each group was asked to show their drawing, speak about the inspiration behind it, and share how they could make a positive difference in the world. for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/

National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Principal Nicholas Jantz presented Letters of Commendation to both Prince and Garg on the morning of September 21st. The district congratulates the two seniors on a job well done.

Calhoun Homecoming Game It was an afternoon and evening brimming with school spirit on Sept. 21 as the Sanford H. Calhoun High School community came together to celebrate their annual ColtFest and homecoming game. Various music ensembles led by directors Eric Vivelo and Ed Tumminelli teamed up for an Ed Sheeran medley while student singers Emily Turner and Gianna Perazzo belted out the vocals. All of the fall teams had

the opportunity to perform at the afternoon pep rally. The Bellmore-Merrick Lady Sharks performed the hit toddler song “Baby Shark” and even had a teammate dressed up as a shark. Corey Jones and Jamie DiBartolomeo were crowned homecoming king and queen, respectively, and Charlie the Colt horsed around on the field and in the stands to get the crowd on their feet. The Colts took on

Levittown’s MacArthur High School in a nail-biter of a match up. “The game was an incredible battle and wellplayed on both sides of the line of scrimmage,” said Principal Nicole Hollings. “MacArthur pulled out the win 21-20. While it was heartbreaking, it will certainly fuel our fire to work harder and perhaps meet MacArthur again down the road in playoffs.

Wantagh students took the next step toward planning their academic future through attendance at three annual college mini-fairs. More than fifty representatives set up tables with information about national and regional colleges and universities for students exploring their options after graduation. The annual events paralleled the guidance department’s focus on aiding juniors

and seniors in the college application process. Wantagh Guidance Director Frank Muzio explained that the minicollege fairs are excellent ways for students to shop for colleges. “It is a great opportunity for our students to engage in the college process directly with the representatives,” Muzio said. In addition to hosting the mini-college fairs, guidance counselors

prepare students for meaningful interactions with the college representatives through individual and group workshops. The high school also hosts a college program, which introduces important terms and procedures, calendar deadlines for applications, financial aid options, and tools for students and parents to evaluate colleges and resources.

Australian Students Visit East Meadow School Students from the other side of the world were greeted as special visitors to East Meadow High School on September 24th. Principal Richard Howard, staff members and students welcomed guests from Balwyn High School, a school in Melbourne, Australia. More than a dozen students and staff members from the Australian high school traveled to the United States and made East Meadow a point of

visitation during their trip. Members of the East Meadow High School National Honor Society led the group on tours of the school while also inviting them to participate in classes. The Australian students interacted in gym, art and the various academic classes at East Meadow High School. Educational World Travel coordinated with Custom Tours Inc. to arrange the visit to an elite Nassau County school.

The goals of the visit were to allow the Australian students an opportunity to see the daily routine at East Meadow, experience the variety of class offerings and socialize with American students. Many of the Australian students indicated that the visit was the highlight of their trip thus far. The district wishes the members of Balwyn High School a safe remainder of their trip.

Star Art Defines Bellmore’s Core District Values After cutting stars out of construction paper, they were asked to think about how they personally have demonstrated a core value. Using the art of collage, the stars were then decorated to reﬂect the student’s choice of a core value. For instance, one student decided to make his star a baseball player, because

athletes demonstrate dedication. In addition, the students recited and pasted the school pledge on the back of each of their stars to prepare for the pep rally in October, an annual event which further enhances the district’s teaching of core values and leadership principles.

Holocaust Memorial Film Screening in Glen Cove The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County’s David Taub Reel Upstanders Film Series presents a film screening of Into the Arms of Strangers – Stories of the Kindertransport, on Sunday, October 14th, at 1 p.m., at HMTC, Welwyn Preserve, located at 100 Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove. The screening is in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of Kindertransport. Into the Arms of

Strangers – Stories of the Kindertransport is an Oscar award-winning documentary, directed by Mark Jonathan Harris, with narration by Judy Dench. The film tells the extraordinary story of how Great Britain offered refuge to over 10,000 unaccompanied minor children whose parents secretly smuggled them out of Nazi-occupied Germany and German annexed countries between 1938 and 1939. Special guests at the screening will
