Please Hold Customer service. It’s a thankless job, to be sure. But for those of us on the other side of the phone, it can be downright maddening. Over the course of the last several weeks, I have had the good fortune of being in touch with representatives from three major companies and one federal agency. As polite as the majority of them have been, there is simply no substitute for good oldfashioned efficiency. From poor line conditions that make it sound as though you’ve been patched through to another planet, to computer screens that keep

“freezing,” necessitating the dreaded May I put you on hold for 5-7 minutes? request, it does make you wonder how any issues are ever resolved. What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…

I try to be patient through it all, telling myself it’s not their fault that they work for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do. Flipping out never sped the process along. At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

Dragon Pride Reigns A beautiful, clear blue sky was the perfect backdrop for Division Avenue High School’s annual homecoming parade and game on September 20th. A Friday afternoon pep rally in the school’s gymnasium kicked off the celebration as students and staff demonstrated their spirit during the introduction of sports teams. Prior to the game, clubs and members of each class paraded from Wisdom Lane Middle School, down Hempstead Turnpike and onto Division Avenue with homemade banners, and members of the

homecoming court rode on the back of decorated convertibles. The high school marching band and cheerleaders led the way as families and Levittown residents gathered on the sides of local streets to show their support. As an annual tradition, senior football players, band members, cheerleaders and kickline members were escorted to the field by a significant other to be honored for their service to the community. To kick off the game, Matt Brzezinski, Kara Burke, John Genzale and Dmitra Tzanis led the community in the singing of the national anthem. The halftime show was

packed with performances from the cheerleaders, the kickline team and the high school marching band. During a special presentation, the homecoming court was announced and Christina Reilly and Blerim Bardhi were crowned homecoming queen and king, while Alexandra Sorbello and Francis Alexander were crowned homecoming princess and prince. The Dragons flexed their muscle and managed a shutout victory against Floral Park with a score of 9-0, with all of the points made by the team in the first half of the game.

Band Of Brothers The Villanova Rugby team is an organization that has gone through many twists and turns in its history. It was disbanded for a few years, only to come back stronger than ever. This year, the Villanova Rugby Football Club is on the road to a playoff finish. In our first three games, we played some of the best teams in the country. Notre Dame College and Towson are the two favorites to win it all this year. We played both of these teams, and although we lost, gave them a run for their money. This weekend, we are set to take on

Lock Haven. Under the guidance of four new coaches, the Rugby Team is finally gaining respect on campus. We practice five days a week in the hopes that we can win matches. It’s a violent sport, and many of our guys have gotten injured. There are no pads in rugby, so players face a huge risk. During a game, there are fifteen large men on the other team who want to hurt you. If you have the ball, you need to move. There is no stoppage in play. If the ball carrier goes down, a ruck is formed, and the teams fight for the ball. As the Tighthead Prop,

I’m expected to get in on all of the rucks. I do this willingly, because my teammate is often at the bottom of that pile. I look out for them, and they look out for me. Its a bond that we’ve developed on the Rugby Team. The other players have been like an extended family to me. I’m really liking this team, and I hope that I can play on it for the next four years. Villanova has really proven to be a good fit for me. I like that sense of brotherhood, and the Rugby Team is full of fun people.

School senior Eduardo Sandoval were selected as 2014 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars. The National Hispanic Recognition Program

was established in 1983 through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. This year, the program recognized only 5,000 outstanding Hispanic/Latino students

nationwide. Qualifications for recognition were based on critical reading, mathematics and writing scores on the 2013 PSAT/ NMSQT and a minimum GPA of 3.0. In addition,

recipients of this honor must be Hispanic or Latino in origin. The NHRP sends a list of all recognized students to subscribing colleges and universities that are

particularly interested in academically outstanding seniors of Hispanic/Latino heritage.

Let The Fun Begin It was a community affair as New York State legislators, community members, district and school administrators, PTA members and students came together for a ribbon-cutting celebration to mark the completion of the Mandalay Elementary School playground and to acknowledge those who were instrumental in its building and installation. Spearheaded by the Mandalay PTA Playground Committee, the new playground nicknamed “Mandaplay” now replaces “Big Toy” and is being thoroughly enjoyed by students. “This is a true example of the community coming together and making a difference for the children,” Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg said. Sizeable grants were received from the offices of Nassau County Legislators Dennis Dunne and Dave Denenberg, as well as the Wantagh Kiwanis Club, International Kiwanis Club, PTA and parent volunteers provided resources and time to install the structure. Fundraising activities included the sale of engraved bricks, a visit from the Harlem Wizards, an Applebee’s flapjack event and brokerage night. PTA playground committee co-chairs Roseann Lombardo and Sharon George explained that the old

playground needed to be replaced with a more modern version. “As a parent and past Mandalay student myself, I am so thrilled that the children have such a wonderful place to play that promotes healthy activity,” George said. “It

Reinhard Early Childhood Center combined their English language arts and mathematics units along with their art skills as they participated in an Apple Fest. Gathered together in small groups, and working with their teachers and parent volunteers, the students traveled to various apple-centered stations during the afternoon activity. Employing their creativity, the students made stained-glass apples using construction paper and colored cellophane and undertake an appleprinting art project with paint and an apple cut in half. Utilizing their math skills, the students had to make predictions on whether an apple would weigh more or less than various vegetables. After sampling various red, yellow and green varieties of apples, they also were tasked with graphing the results of a class-wide apple taste test. To complete the activity, the secondgraders read about Johnny Appleseed and created drawings to go along with the story.
