The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition
For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.
To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip, and has remained open throughout the pandemic. They helped serve those in need during this pandemic by giving them food and gas gift cards, as well as assistance with living expenses. They are grateful for involvement from local businesses that have held fundrasier events for them and even donated goods to their organization. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program, where they will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was
inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. The outdoors has been serving as classroom space like never before at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. As part of the district’s reopening plan, teachers are encouraged to use outdoor spaces periodically so students can continue learning while getting a change of scenery from their classroom. First grade teacher Robin Obey brings her students out every day for morning meeting as long as the weather permits. This gives them ample space to get into a circle so children can greet each other and start the day on a positive note. Each day consists of a math game and often a special activity. Her first graders went on an acorn hunt, filling up small bags before returning to their spots to observe, describe and compare the acorns. Third graders in Brittany Ciana’s class go outside

They observed the color and size of tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplant, and were given small bags to harvest some of the ripe vegetables and take them home to their families. Ms. Purificato also used the garden as a setting for a Writing Workshop activity in which students wrote about special memories. Ms. Danowski’s fifth graders did a scavenger hunts in the garden where they had to find different herbs and vegetables that matched a descriptive hint. ‘This year has really given us an opportunity to re-imagine what exactly a classroom is,” Ms. Danowski said. “We do not stop learning when we leave these four walls. Opening up learning to the outdoors helps our students to see that learning can happen anywhere.”

daily for a class read aloud. Students sit on their mats and listen as she reads from the chapter book, “Third Grade Angels,” by Jerry Spinelli. They bring their reading notebooks and pencils to answer prompts after finishing each chapter. A STEAM challenge in which students made and tested paper airplanes was the perfect outdoor activity for fifth graders in Melissa Danowski’s class. Students followed the engineering design process and made adjustments after each flight to perfect their model planes, while also learning from each other’s designs. She added that her students also love to go outside for independent reading time. Park Avenue’s community garden is a regularly used outdoor space but has been in demand even more this year. The role individuals play in their own health care became more prominent in 2020. As a global pandemic forced people from all walks of life to prioritize their personal health each time they left their homes, many individuals sought ways to take a more active role in their health care. Proactive health care has long been touted by medical professionals, though many people still don’t take such recommendations to heart. In fact, a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that as much as 75 percent of health care spending in the United States is reactive in nature, meaning that money is going toward treating conditions and diseases rather than preventing them from occurring in the first place. Taking an active role in your own health care is easier than people may think. And the benefits of such a proactive approach are numerous, including a reduced risk for various diseases.

Those illnesses weaken people’s immune systems, making them more vulnerable to other viruses, including COVID-19. Flu vaccines have also
been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization. That’s a significant benefit of being vaccinated, as people who get their flu shots can indirectly help hospitals conserve potentially scarce resources. As the COVID-19 virus rapidly spread late in the winter of 2019-20, many hospitals across the country and even the globe were stretched incredibly thin. So anything ordinary citizens can do to alleviate such burdens can help save lives while also making hospital workers’ jobs easier and less stressful. Many people may be concerned about going out and getting a flu shot in 2020. That’s especially likely for people who live in communities where
the COVID-19 virus is spreading. However, the CDC notes that getting a flu shot in 2020 is an essential part of protecting your health and the health of your family. Many doctor’s offices are now insisting patients wait in their cars until doctors are ready to see them, and masks may be required when entering the doctor’s office. Such measures can reduce the risk of getting the COVID-19 virus when visiting a doctor’s office for a flu shot or another visit, so patients should not be hesitant to receive their vaccinations in 2020. East Meadow Students Return The East Meadow School District welcomed back students to their nine buildings during the week of Sept. 8 for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. East Meadow has adopted a hybrid learning model for grades 3-12, with cohorts of in-person students alternating
between in-person and distance learning. One group of students attended in-person instruction beginning on Sept. 8, and the other on Sept. 10. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth A. Card Jr., Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and
Instruction Dr. Dave Casamento and other members of central administration and the board of education visited the district’s elementary, middle and high schools to extend their good wishes to each group of students for the upcoming year.
