eyes closed, guided by another teacher who had to talk them through the maze without using any directional words. A Lego activity in the library required two steps for success. In one room, a few teachers had to look at existing Lego creations and write instructions on how to build it. Then, they passed those directions along to their teammates who had those same pieces, unassembled, and had to recreate the structure. There were two administrative facilitators at each location, who provided an overview of the activity and awarded points. Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Marc Ferris said that the activities reflected the four targeted student outcomes in Wantagh schools – collaboration, communication through writing and speech, problem-solving and research. He explained

that the goal of the Wantagh Olympics was to get teachers thinking of new and innovative ways to engage their students in learning. They had followup discussions during department meetings on Aug. 31. Dr. Ferris thanked the administrative team for their hard work all summer to ensure a year ahead that will emphasize the joys of learning, following a year in which the focus was often on health and safety protocols. “We’re getting back to what we became teachers for,” he said. At the elementary level, Superintendent’s Conference Day was focused on small-group instruction in reading, writing and math. A dozen of the district’s model teachers facilitated workshops for their colleagues, demonstrating engaging activities to support student learning.

“Bringing back the joy” was the purpose of the Wantagh Olympics, a series of team events for Wantagh High School and Middle School teachers during Superintendent’s Conference Day. Teachers were split into 20 groups, each representing a different country, and rotated through four stations at the high school. In the main gym, they played “The Floor is Lava” and each team had to get all of its members from the sideline to a mat in the middle without touching the floor. They could only use the provided supplies such as cones, jump ropes, rubber dots and scooters. Creating a team cheer was each group’s task in the north gym. Teachers had to include facts about the countries they were representing in their cheers. Outside, small orange cones were set up to create a “minefield.” Each teacher had to walk through with his or her

Chamber Of Commerce Honors Levittown Volunteers Levittown Chamber of Commerce recently honored community members with awards at a COVID-delayed recognition dinner originally scheduled for February. In recognition of his service on the board of directors under the leadership of thenPresident Jon Probstein who served from 2019 to 2020, William Powell of William J. Powell Associates received the 2021 President’s Award presented to a COC member whose efforts and performance provided the greatest support and benefits to the work and operation of the Levittown COC during the term of the outgoing president. A First Responder for more than 45 years, Powell, a retired police officer assigned to the elite Emergency Service Units of both the New York City and Nassau County Police Departments, joined the Levittown Chamber of Commerce in 2016 and currently serves as Second Vice-President. He has chaired the Chamber’s Scholarship Committee and served on the Memorial Day Festival, Nominating, Website and Fundraising committees. Powell established William J. Powell Associates, L.L.C in 2010, is a consultant on a variety of subjects and teaches CPR, First Aid and Public Access Defibrillation to the lay public, Active Shooter Training for both the lay public and first responders, a variety of Homeland Security Programs and both Basic and Advanced Medical Programs to medical professionals. Donald Patane, a past-president of the Chamber is a Financial Advisor and one of the founders of Main Street

Financial Group with offices in Levittown and Kings Park. He is the recipient of the 2021 Citizen of the Year Award presented to an individual who has shown extraordinary dedication and commitment to the Levittown community through voluntary acts of service and good will. Patane is an active member of the Levittown Lions and Levittown Kiwanis clubs, Levittown Community Council, Levittown Special Events, and on the board of directors of YES Community Counseling Center. A veteran U. S. Navy Lieutenant, he is a member of the VFW Post #9592 and the American Legion Post #1711 as well as the Gazebo Gang, a group of veterans that has planned the recent installations of a gazebo and statuary at Veterans Memorial Park in Levittown. Patane’s citizenry extends beyond Levittown. He also serves on the board of directors of the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce, Senior Umbrella Networks of Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, the National Aging In Place Council and is treasurer of the Gerontology Professionals of New York for the past nine years. Louise Cassano, a longtime resident of Levittown has been recognized with the Levittown Chamber of Commerce 2021 Distinguished Service Award, given to a Chamber member whose work and efforts to benefit the Levittown community and the Levittown Chamber of Commerce during the past year were extraordinary and unsurpassed. An active community volunteer, Cassano is a past President and a current director of the Chamber, chair of Levittown Special Events,

Inc. which is organizing Levittown’s 75th anniversary celebration that is currently taking place through 2022, and is a founding member, charter president and currently First Vice President of the Levittown Community Council. A Levittown Schools Hall of Fame inductee, Cassano is owner and principal of LuCas Communications, a public relations and marketing firm and ArtWorx, an online gallery of her art work and paintings, and serves on Levittown Community Action Coalition, Levittown School District Strategic Planning Committee, is a member of St. Bernard’s Parish Council as well as a Eucharistic Minister, and a board member of the Levittown Lions Club, Independent Art Society and the Suburban Art League. Cassano is also a PastPresident of the Public Relations Professionals of Long Island and the International Association of Business Communicators. YES Community Counseling Center of Levittown and Massapequa, was awarded with the Joan Lynch Memorial Award, established this year to honor Past President and board member, Joan Lynch, executive director of the Long Island Center for Independent Living, who passed away in March. The award honors a local member organization or member business that has provided continued support and good will to the Levittown community and beyond. YES Community Counseling Center is a non-profit, community based agency providing counseling services to youth, adults and

SOFIA LASPINA the sideline,” she added. “When she caught the touchdown, the sideline erupted and celebrated like we had won a championship,” added head coach Anthony Cracco. During the post-game huddle, Cracco gave LaSpina the game ball right on the spot – a first for the coach of 13 years.

“We couldn’t be prouder of Sofia,” Cracco said. “She has worked exceptionally hard to achieve success on the field. At the time, none of us realized the historical achievement that we had just witnessed, the celebration was for an outstanding teammate that earned the respect and admiration of her peers and coaches.” LaSpina said she fell in love with the sport while playing it with siblings in her backyard. “I would always watch the Jets and want to play so I waited for middle school to try football out and I ended up loving it,” she explained. It’s very fitting that LaSpina was also named the New York Jets Player of the Week after this accomplishment. She will be honored at an upcoming game.

Supervisor Don Clavin and Councilman Dennis Dunne joined members of the Glassey family on Lancaster Street in East Meadow to announce the renaming of the road in memory of United States Army Specialist 4, John G. Glassey, a Vietnam Veteran killed in action on April 15, 1969 at Patrol Base Diamond III, near the Cambodian border. Also attending the street dedication ceremony were Councilman Bruce A. Blakeman, Town Clerk Kate Murray, Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll, Commander Pete Wenninger of the East Meadow American Legion Post #1082, the American Legion Color Guard, the Patriot Guard Riders, friends and neighbors. “We are proud to rename Lancaster Street in East Meadow as Army Spec 4 John G. Glassey Street,” said Supervisor Clavin. “As we gather here, we are reminded of the importance of honoring all those who have served our nation, those who have given their lives in defense of our freedoms and those who continue to make sacrifices so that we may enjoy the freedoms

and liberty we cherish so dearly.” John Glassey grew up on Lancaster Street in East Meadow and he enjoyed playing little league baseball for St. Raphael’s Parish. He attended Meadow Lane School and Woodland School, and he graduated from East Meadow High School in 1967. His first job was as a newspaper carrier for Newsday on Lancaster Street and he also worked at the local Waldbaums. Shortly after graduating, he was drafted in to the United States Army in July 1968 via Selective Service. John began his tour on December 13, 1968 and served during the Vietnam War. He held the rank of Specialist 4 and his military occupation was Light Weapons Infantry. He was killed in action at Patrol Base Diamond III, near the Cambodian border on April 15th, 1969. He is survived by his brother Robert Glassey who still lives in East Meadow. “The showing of love for John Glassey is certainly evident here as we are surrounding by family, friends, and neighbors,” added Dunne. “As a former United States Marine who

also served in Vietnam, I understand the sacrifice of serving our country. This man served bravely in the United States Army and unfortunately, we lost him way too early. I hope that this street sign will be a symbol that will remind generations for years to come of the heroism and courageousness of our brave military and armed forces service members for their service to our nation.” The Town of Hempstead is grateful to the Patriot Guard Riders, Commander Pete Wenninger, East Meadow American Legion Post 1082, the American Legion Color Guard, the East Meadow Fire Department and Mike Sweeney for their participation in this event, as well as Rev. Robert A. East Meadow Students Honor Anniversary Of Sept. 11, 2001

Throughout the day on Sept. 10, students from the East Meadow Union Free School District took time to reflect on the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Each school recognized the 20th anniversary of the day with age-appropriate conversations and activities. At Barnum Woods Elementary School, for example, kindergartners wore red, white and blue and

colored an American flag, while first grade students discussed heroes and how they can show gratitude to those who act heroically in their own community. Meanwhile, fourth graders created patriotic quilts to demonstrate their respect and appreciation for the country and to honor the heroic action of the nation’s heroes. At Parkway Elementary

School, students in Mrs. Izzo’s fifth grade class listened to a story, “The Man in the Red Bandana,” and learned about a local hero from Sept. 11. Lung Cancer Screenings Saves Lives Cancer Screening Director Sharad Chandrika, MD. “If lung cancer is caught early before it spreads, the likelihood of surviving five years or more improves nearly 60 percent. Early detection of cancer also allows doctors to perform less invasive procedures to treat patients.” Patient screenings use low-dose CT scans that allow physicians to identify abnormal areas in the lungs that may be cancerous. Research shows that scans are a more effective tool than X-rays and can significantly reduce lung cancer deaths. The scan takes only a few seconds and is painless.

At Catholic Health, each patient’s screening results are reviewed by a team of experts in oncology, pulmonology, radiology, radiation oncology, surgery and others to determine whether additional action is needed to meet their specific needs. Designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiologists, the prestigious honor signifies that Catholic Health’s lung screening program has met rigorous quality standards to provide safe, effective lung cancer screening services. Should larger or growing nodules be identified, there is a

likelihood of cancer. Dr. Chandrika said the goal is early detection, and further testing is completed through a PET scan, biopsy or possibly surgery. Additionally, benign nodules can also be identified and will require further testing. Several lung conditions such as scars from infections that are noncancerous appear as small spots on a scan. Most nodules will need to be monitored over time as directed by a physician. If no abnormalities are detected, your doctor may recommend annual screenings for a period of years that will be determined in consultation with the

physician and patient. Guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommend annual screenings for those who have a smoking history of at least 20 packs per year, currently smoke, or have quit within the past 15 years and are between 50 and 80 years old. East Meadow Students Honor Anniversary Of Sept. 11, 2001 Continued From 10 chose one of three projects. They created origami paper cranes, which serve as a reminder of the importance of community during an emergency, designed first responder badges, or wrote “Dear Hero” letters to honor and thank heroes in the community. At East Meadow High School, the social studies department crafted lesson plans to teach students about the events of Sept. 11, 2001 and how it changed

the world. During the day, teachers led students through the hallway, where the names of all of those who tragically passed were displayed on the walls. Students then visited the school’s 9/11 memorial, consisting of two trees to signify the Twin Towers, as well as a small piece of the World Trade Center. American flags were planted in the memorial and all staff were provided with American flag pins to stand in unity of remembrance.

“This small act of service is intended to unite our students, faculty, and staff, to remember this horrific day 20 years ago, and motivate us to do good things for one another, no matter how big or small,” East Meadow High School Principal Richard Howard said. At W.T. Clarke High School, the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society in conjunction with the art department and school library, created

They produced an exhibit, “September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World,” which presented the history of Sept. 11, its origins, and its ongoing implications through the personal stories of those who witnessed and survived the attacks. Told across 14 posters, this exhibition included archival photographs and images of artifacts from the 9/11 Museum’s permanent

collection. It explored the consequences of terrorism on individual lives and communities at the local, national and international levels, and encouraged critical thinking about the legacies of 9/11. “Twenty years after the attacks, with terrorism still a threat today, the events of 9/11 and its aftermath remind us that we may never be able to prevent all the actions of people intent on harming others, but we do have control over how we respond to such events,” said W.T. Clarke

High School English and Social Studies Department Chair Kelly Xylas. “Whether by volunteering in our local communities, serving our nation in the military, caring for the sick, or through other efforts, all of us can help build the world in which we want to live. As we witness history unfolding in our own time, the ways we choose to respond—both large and small—can demonstrate the best of human nature after even the worst of days.”
